The Adventurer

Anyone reading Heroes in Crisis? Because I kind of really really like it. Tom King remains fire.

And I think people comparing it unfavorably to Identity Crisis is really unfair.

Finished reading the master edition of From Hell #1. Basically From Hell, but with added colours by Cambell. Didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. Looked off in previews, but really good on paper. I find it to be a very interesting take on of my absolute favorite stories.

Anyone else who's also read it? Thoughts?

That's out now? I might have to nip down to my local shop and pick up a copy. It looks like an excellent job.

I was in that there London the weekend before last and asked for it in Orbital, and was amused to find that none of the staff knew anything about it.

I really like it as well. Really interesting concept! Wonder how far Tom will take things. His Mister Miracle is amazing as well.

Eh, ok? I don't see it. I really don't. Is it because the deaths? Not the first Crisis-event to have those...

It's worth a look. Funny. My LCBS owner was surprised as well by it.

Another surprising thing is that it doesn't seem to be any reviews for it. Wonder if it's slipped under peoples radar.

What I like most about it is the way Cambell has given some of the black lines colours instead of just the whites. Also interesting to see some of the colours having a similar feel to them as his inks. "Messy" or what to call it (meant in the best way possible). Really fits the book. Gives it a painted feel.

Some people are annoyed at
gratuitous deaths, in particular Wally West's because he was just brought back with much fanfare in Rebirth. Some people have more realistic complaints concerning the presentation of vulnerable people with mental health concerns being attacked after opening up to someone.

But really, most people on Twitter are angry at the notion that Harley Quinn could out fox 'The Trinity' as she did. And a character in story dared suggest she might be better then Batman.
Well, now, don't you tell me to smile
You stick around I'll make it worth your while
My comics beyond what you can dial
Maybe it's because they're so versatile
Style, nice comic pile, I said
It always brings me smile when I read, "ooh, child!"
From now I'm reviewin' out in the wild
I run the best things to the very last mile
Well, if you don't read like me I will feel reviled
People always sayin' my comics is wild
You've got gall, you've got guile
So step to me I'm a comic-o-phile
If you don't read these you're in denial
Comin' from Uranus to check my style
Go ahead, put my pile on trial
Or cast me off into exile

Comic pile, reviewary, reviewary, my comic pile
Comic pile, reviewary, reviewary, my comic pile

Judge Dredd Toxic 1 is just about the only not great comic this haul. Its not bad but we have a lot of great, great Dredd already, do we really need a load more average Dredd?

The Weather Man 5 is pretty damned fine. I just wish they'd spent more time examining how Nathan our led was unaware in reality he inhabits the body of the man responsible for the destruction of Earth, even though he himself is entirely interesting. Instead its gone all gang busters on us.

The Immortal Hulk 5 goes all bombastic on us to BUT ends up in a very interesting place. I'm liking how this is developing.

Planet of the Apes - Time of Man - is a great little oneshot of shorts. Not quite sure why its here but its good fun none the less and has a great story by Dabnett.

Shanghai Red 5 ends this great series with a little to much Batmanesque heroics but its damned good all the same.

Speaking of Bats Batman The Maxx 2 continues this glorious return to the ... well madness is not the word, insight into the very very different and fresh perspective is the best way to put it. Oh and how amazing does Sam Keith make The Joker look!

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur 36
sees this great arc come to an end with some great fun. I mean who doesn't want to see The Wreaking Crew riding an anyklosaur into battle against Devil D... while the main thrust of the story is getting the exam grades to save a school from destruction arranged by the KIngpin. See even my clumsy summary has made you want to read this comic... right... right...RIGHT

Finally Kyle Starks has created a comic that catches my imagination and we get the brilliant Mars Attacks 1 which just beautifully captures the mood of the movie while offering a great opening to a new story. Glorious art too from Chris Schweizer. I'm excited about this series.

But book of the haul is infact two books. Damnit Jeff Lemire is cooking up a glorious storm with Black Hammer. Black Hammer - Age of Doom 6 I didn't think I liked the art by Rich Tommaso I was so wrong it was perfect for this glorious flight into ... well what... an examination of Superhero fiction, an inter-dimensional roller-coaster ride... something else... well whatever it is it was just wonderful and that last page! Black Hammer - The Quantum Age 3 - I mean who needs another reimagining of Legion of Superheroes... well turns out we do as it somehow feels fresh and vivid through the archetypes and again that ending, man that ending... its that ending that made the familar ground we'd gone through before all the more sharp.

So there you go

Comic haul - they got it goin' on, they comin' on, they comin' on...

Some of it sounds resonable. I don't know. To me it's just comics. There's probably some magic way out (time travel ding ding ding) or some "all is not as it seems". If not, then DC will probably reset things in a couple of months time. Bit like with Damian or Wonder Woman becoming the god of war.

THAY DAAAAARE!? Haha no. I read it. Thought it was funny. I really like the Harley in this story. A good mix of fun, sad and a bit eerie.

Oh they killed him? Why can't they kill off
Barry Bloody Allen
again.

The Green Lantern #1 by Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp. My first impression, colourful and fun. Loads of lovely weird stuff which Sharp does a bang up job illustrating. I think Grant and Liam has a winner in their hands. Very much looking forward to what's next :)

I don't really get on with Morrison's superhero stuff, and I hate monthly comics, but I thought I'd give this a go.

I agree; fun, although not as weird as I'd have liked. Best bit was the Green Phlegm Lantern, the cop who's a virus, shitting criminals into submission. The fun and imaginative concept reminded me a bit of Alan Moore, which I'm sure Morrison would be delighted to hear.

Worst bits were the luck gizmo, which was derivative of Red Dwarf, and the sex scene, which was derivative of Showgirls. I remember Morrison saying his strategy on JLA was to try create a plot point around a Neil deGrasse Tyson science fact in every issue, and the Meganthrope sequence was a fun (if clunky) example.

Never read another Green Lantern comic in my life, so I don't even see the Easter eggs I'm sure must be there, but making the character's mission to sort out the mess of continuity created by DC is pretty droll and meta.

Not even Mogo Doesn't Socialise or Tygers aka How Alan Moore Wrote Several Years Worth of DC Comics In 12 Pages?

I know I should have, but I just don't have the gene that makes people need to catch-em-all. That's the Kev O'Neill one, aye? Even less excuse not to (hangs head in shame)

The Adventurer

Picked up Green Lantern 1 based almost entirely on the creative team. Morrison's getting wild as he does, and Sharp is as good as ever drawing said weirdness. I dug it.

Lanterns of different scales and wavelengths are a super interesting idea. I hope it gets fully realized, and not forgotten by the next creative team that takes over.

I thought that was really inspired*, but for all I knew, that was something that had been there since the forties.

I suppose that's why publishers hire(d) flakes like Morrison & Moore; even if they cost more, they casually toss out novel ideas that dependable journeymen can spend the next few decades building stories around.

* Specifically, the idea that the abilities of other lanterns aren't just based on the properties of the visible spectrum, but x-rays, gamma radiation, radio and microwaves, too.

But isn't that a bit weird?  ;)

Btw. Is yellow still a problem for green lanterns?

I've only read a bit Lantern here and there. O Neils and Adams Green arrow/lantern team up most notably.
