Books & Comics / Random personal reads
21 April, 2009, 02:17:06 AM
I'm new back here, so sorry if this seems a bit random* and daggy**.
'The Time of your Life' is the worst Dr Who novel ever. I only finished it because of an irrational compulsion to finish books once started.
Oedipus At Colonus is terrific and may be the first ever sequel-better-than-the-original.

cheers

Floyd

Welcome to the board / Oheesashiburii
16 April, 2009, 10:14:06 PM
(Japanese for 'long time no see').  Hi there! It's a long time since I've been about the board. Thought I'd drop in and say hello.
Wasn't Prog 1631 awesome?  It inspired me to come back here.
Me, I'm still living in Melbourne, still reading the progs. I lost a ton of weight after a health scare a year or so back (the health scare drove me to a diet-and-exercise frenzy). I'm now qualified as a high school teacher and am teaching English to adult migrants whilst scheming to inflict myself on the the High School population here.  Oh and I'm studying some Philosophy, partly for phun, partly for professional development.
How are you all?  What's new?

cheers

Off Topic / Last Post for a while
27 May, 2008, 12:46:54 PM
I'm  leaving the board for a bit and thought I'd say a proper goodbye.
I'm leaving mainly because I don't feel that I can say what I like about the progs. I don't want to rehash the arguments that have already been aired on this, but thought I should be clear about it.   may be back sometime but it won't be for a while. I won't be lurking, but may drop in on the chat from time to time.
This is a terrific board all over - I just read PVS's thread about positive things the board has done and didn't realise it has been so inspiring to so many people.  For me, it has been a comfortable funny place, which has sometimes made me laugh out loud and through which I've met some interesting people.  I learned how to be polite on the internet here - mainly by being a galah and then regretting it (my apologies to Frazer Irving, Gordon Rennie, PVS and David Bishop for harping , being rude and generally typing without thinking).  Whenever someone is new and rude, I remember what I used to be like (I think I'm more thoughtful now, but at first it was so intoxicating).
If or rather when I get to the UK, I will definitely let you know and see how many of you I can meet in the flesh.
Anyone here is welcome to drop me a line via my address here.

hoo roo all,

Floyd

Off Topic / Rock on Scotland!
18 May, 2008, 05:50:54 AM
Apparently Bon Scott, 'the oldest sharpie'* and rock god came from a town in Scotland, before coming here to be the lead singer of Acker-dacker.  that explains the bagpipes in 'long way to the top'

*sharpies were chav-esque gangs of kids who had mullets and tight ugly little sweaters. Bon Scott was their God.

Off Topic / Don't poke me!

Is anyone else here sick of Facebook?

I'm not sick of it as in "I've used it too much and now I'm tired of it".  I'm sick of reading my mail and getting messages telling me that such-and-such has sent me pictures/found my Japanese name/ written on my graffiti wall/sold me as a pet or some other cute thing.  What I'd like is for such-and-such to send me an email and say hello. I don't want to have to get into Facebook in order to have contact with someone who could contact me directly if they wanted to.
Usually I'm a sucker for online stuff. Am I a luddite? Does anyone else feel this way about Facebook?  Is it connected to an impending 46th birthday?

well?

General / Wanna be a cowboy
15 May, 2008, 02:05:32 AM
I was wondering this morning how a Western story would go in 2000 AD.  There's a lot of Western influences there; Dredd has a very Clint Eastwood feel to him and the Cursed Earth is very much the sort of place where sherriffy stuff happens, Missionary Man was mostly very cowboy...the list goes on and includes less successful stuff like that Edginton horror/western thingy, that time travel two episode thing....
So how would a just plain western story go down with you?  Who should write and draw such a story?  I'm not passionately advocating this; you could make a case that there's enough High Plains Drifterishness in Dredd as it is. Just wondering.

Off Topic / He'll never be an old man Jock

Jock Cheese/aka Tokin Blackman aka James Paull, TISM guitarist and writer of two of their best songs (Greg! The Stop Sign! and He'll Never be an Old Man River) has died unseasonably early at 50.  Which is a damn shame

here's the link to the articlehttp://www.livenews.com.au/articles/2008/04/29/TISM_guitarist_dies_of_cancer, and here, more importantly, is a link to one of his songs

check out Greg the Stop Sign too

Off Topic / wasn't Dave the Chimp available?
04 May, 2008, 04:25:51 AM
I've just read that Tory Twit Boris Johnson has become Mayor of London.  As a long-time Spectator reader, I find this inexplicable, having read a lot of his 'aren't I a jolly Wodehouseish quipper' editorials and endured all the space he gave his girlfriend to pretend to be Dorothy Parker.
Was the other guy that bad? Is it all an anti-Brown backlash? etc etc

over to you

26 April, 2008, 07:21:10 AM
aaaaages ago, you helpful people directed me to Spybot SnD and Lavasoft for free spybot detection and removal. I've used them ever since and haven't had any of the problems that lead to my original cry for help.
However that was ages ago. Are there any other things I should be using?

just wondering,

yours gratefully-in-anticipation,

Books & Comics / new Jack Kirby biography
13 April, 2008, 05:20:11 AM
from the same London Review of Books (it must be comics month there)...there's a talk by the author of a new Jack Kirby biography very soon in London. Sorry to be vague, but I can't find the magazine right now. No doubt people with more web-fu than I have can find out where it's at.

cheers,

Floyd

Books & Comics / Eisner and Others
12 April, 2008, 03:42:09 AM
The term â??graphic novelâ?? is dismissed by most of its practitioners as either an empty euphemism or a marketing ploy. As Marjane Satrapi puts it, graphic novels simply enable â??the bourgeois to read comics without feeling badâ??; according to Alan Moore, they allow publishers to â??stick six issues of whatever worthless piece of crap they happened to be publishing lately under a glossy cover and call it The She-Hulk Graphic Novelâ??......

This is the beginning of a review of an Eisner autobiography (as well as of books by David B, Tomine and  Brunette, whoever they are) in the London Review of Books.  Thought you might be interested.

cheers,

yours, lrb-readingly,

Floyd

The city of Yokohama has introduced manners police to make sure people give up their seats for oldies and don't talk too loudly on the train. They're called The Smile Manner Squadron. The idea of people as polite as the Japanese needing cops to make them more so is a funny one, but it appeals to the interfering fascist bastard in me.
What would The Smile Manner Squadron have to police in your town?

Off Topic / Happy Easter weekend to you all
21 March, 2008, 07:47:04 PM
...it's a good one for us so far. Two church services, going out for Malay Chinese one night and Greek food last night. Tomorrow, we're off to the football to see Hawthorn give Melbourne a bath (hopefully), then we're off to the country for three days. And there'll be some chocolate egg action too. I don't get paid for the week, but it's only money

yours chirpily,

if some kind soul could make a nice wallpaper of this image http://www.nteu.org.au/freestyler/custom/images/logo.gif

for me, they'd earn my undying grattitude, a free Phantom comic and any Minogue sisters I can find around the place.

cheers,
