General / re::birthday bash

Well, according to the survey results, those of you that expressed any sort of musical preference were broadly into rock music, with as far as I recall U2 topping the charts, and generally a mix of rock, metal and nu metal making up the bulk of the rest of it.

Therefore it seems sensible for us to book contemporary rock bands for the Anniversary bash, so even those Squaxx into more classic rock should at least not mind the bands too much.

oh dear. if this is the case, then i won't feel so bad about being stuck over here in oz & unable to go.

Prog / Bad news for Judge Alvin
19 December, 2001, 02:30:36 PM
Wow! Programme 2 of 2000AD hit the shelves of Australian newsagents today!

This new thrill Judge Dredd looks an absolute corker; don't want to say too much to spoil it for anyone who hasn't had the opportunity to read it yet.

The art on Dan Dare is absolutely gorgeous; it's little wonder that they actually credit Bellardinelli's name, unlike all of the other art robots.

Sports strips usually don't interest me (other than the humorous adventures of Hotshot Hamish in Tiger), but the art for the Harlem Heroes makes it utterly engaging (& the level of violence in the storyline adds an extra layer of visceral excitement). Don't know the name of this art robot, but i reckon that we can expect big things from hm in the future, you mark my words.

& watch out for those dinosaurs!

anyway, must dash as i'm off now to apply my bio-tronic man stickers!

nicolas cage as john constantine? talk about suspension of disbelief...

let's all be thankful for rebellion's firm grasp on the editorial reigns for shoreline's dredd films.

Suggestions / super covers & star scans
10 December, 2001, 04:25:49 PM
oh, & this best cover debate has reminded me of something i've been thinking about for sometime.

is there any possibility that the text from the old supercover sagas being encoded & posted on this sight.

these were the text equivalent of future shocks which were ran on the nerve centre page from progs 20 to 43 inclusive, each being accomapnied by a full page cover illustration (many by brian bolland & kevin o'neill).

okay, a few  mightn't have aged terribly well, but as a kid i loved the one about the frog from prog 27 & the time-travellers from titan scared me witless (due in no modest amount to brian bolland's powerful prog 30 cover illustration for it).

& prog 39's supercover saga precedes the comics metatextual examinations of grant morrison's 'animal man' by over a decade.

i for one think that it would be a treat to be able to read these again, even if it would be to have a laugh at what a happens when prog 29's pigeon exterminator robot goes awry.

also some of brendan mccarthy's most incindenary work single page illustrations for 2000ad appeared not as covers but star scans (there were some stunning ones by bolland, o'neill, ian gibson & dave gibbons too, amongst others). i wouldn't want to run that scanner into being an early appetiser for mekquake, but seeing them posted somewhere on this sight would be most welcome.

General / more best dredd
10 December, 2001, 03:48:27 PM
okay, following my comments about ennis's grasp of dredd's character in helter skelter, i got to wondering what was others' favourite non-wagner/grant/mills scripted dredd story.

mine has to peter milligan & shaky kane's (with fantastic colouring in from one time philip bond partner jo flatters) Judge Planet from the Judge Dredd Mega Special 1991.

the lyrical beauty of this story moves me to tears every time i read it. definitely one of my top 5 dredd tales ever.

john smith has written some absolute corkers too; Darkside & Fetish immediately spring to my mind.

ooh, think that i've opened a real pandora's box with this one...

Creative Common / DC COMICS REVISES SUBMISSIONS POLICY
06 December, 2001, 05:27:49 PM
thought that this item from comic book resources would be of ineterest to any up & coming creators out there.

 DC COMICS REVISES SUBMISSIONS POLICY
by Jonah Weiland, Executive Producer
Posted: December 5, 2001
Official Press Release

DC regrets that recent circumstances have dictated a change in our submissions policies, and that we will no longer be able to review unsolicited submissions of ideas, stories or artwork. As before, we cannot accept phone inquiries.

"We really do understand how frustrating this may be for some fans who want to show us their work. Most of us at DC started out as fans. Still, we've gotten almost no new talent from unsolicited submissions for a number of years," says Richard Bruning, DC's VP - Creative Director. "The artists and writers that we're likely to use have almost always gotten their start elsewhere, an independent publisher or whatever, and we've seen their work that way. Despite their passion, few fans are at the level where they're ready to write and draw for our books.

"We're still keeping our eyes peeled for new talent, but it's more likely we'll see it in print somewhere or we'll meet them at conventions. This policy more accurately reflects that reality. There were always many more submissions pouring in the door than we could effectively handle, and I don't think anyone ever learned much from a form letter. We're trying to be practical and honest here, not disrespectful."

General / 2000ad novels
31 October, 2001, 05:11:53 PM
i know that i've stated this before, but i think it's an idea that bears tremendous promise:

stephen baxter (the current great white hope of english sf, for all you "media"-types) is on the record for being a huge comics fan. rebellion should approach him.

pat cadigan (the seminal queen of THE MOVEMENT aka cyberpunk) has recently had to resort to writing 'lost in space' franchise books. she could do such wonders with 2000ad characters & concepts.

loved alan dean foster's novelisations as well (particularly 'dark star', & his ghostwriting of 'star wars' [episode 4: the new hope] contained some wonderful prose), but as a writer i think that he's gone tremendously downhill in the last decade or so (glory stones was utter bilge, not remotely near the dizzying heights he scaled with 'nor crystal tears'). vonda mcintyre did absolute miracles with her novelisations of those trek films too.

oh, & whilst we're talking books, who else thought that the opening scene in greg egan's incendinary 'distress' read like brendan mccarthy illustrated dredd?

cheers,

Suggestions / 2000ad novels
29 October, 2001, 12:16:43 PM
considering his wonderful text pieces for the specials & annuals i think that the obvious choice for writing a 2000ad novel would be john smith.

& i'll reiterate stephen baxter, who loves comics. just thought of the superb ian watson too (who did a couple of warhammer novels)
