Forum’s Favourite Thrill - Shimura vs Vanguard Rd 1 Heat 84
« on: 11 January, 2022, 06:17:40 AM »
We’ve DONE IT - the final week of Round 1 - well done. You’ve earnt a break after all this work … so to respect that there’s one less vote this week. Just the 7 - I know I’m as generous as Tharg. If things are going to plan I might keep momentum up and BLAST straight into Round 2… enjoy the break!

Arh man Vanguard promised so much, but alas only survived one series, which did rather leave things hanging. Such a shame. Shimura on the other hand had a good run and some wonderful art (as did Vanguard I should not)

Which most rattles your thrill-receptors:

Shimura - more info

Vs.

Vanguard - more info

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite thrill of these two series at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easily) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Friday 14th January and the winner gets a place in Round 2 (of 9!!!).

What on Earth is ALL of this?

For those that need ‘um and can be bothered to follow ‘um there’s some simple rules

Any questions, just ask as ever - and have FUN!

Robbie vs Robbie but Shimura it will be
When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car.

Old age is the Lord’s way of telling us to step aside for something new. Death’s in case we didn’t take the hint.

It's also McNeil vs McNeil (didn't he design and draw a series of Shimura before Frank Quitely was asked to work on what would become the first series to see print?).

And it's also cliché vs cliché as both Vanguard and Shimura indulge in some pretty basic character conflict stuff. But Shimura did it better, and then after the first couple of series it got pretty weird, in a good way, and there's some AMAZING art in there from Robert McCallum, Simon Fraser and Andy Clarke, not to mention those early belters from Quitely and McNeil.

Shimura by miles.

Shimura could be fairly hit and miss but those artistic hits were out of the park.

Shimura, by a fair margin.  All the sex and violence of Dante, but with a Kurosawa grim type instead of a grinning smug gobshite (who, to be fair, I eventually grew to like).

I kinda forget how much Robbie Morrison has done, and only ever think of Dante. But hey I loved the Bendatti Vendetta too and of course there’s Shakara.

But neither of these were really my cup of tea. One went on far too long and the other wasn’t really good enough to get a second series. But if I’ve got to choose one, it will have to be Shimura. Even if I never did get round to reading the collected edition I won as a prize for getting a letter published in the Megazine.

Robert McCallum

Thanks for the reminder - aside from the stellar art in this series by the more popular Droids, McCallum provided some visceral stuff for a few episodes. Loved it.

Shimura by a significant margin.

Ah, man. I've read a lot of Shimura, but always found it a bit impenetrable. Like Magnetica, I won a Shimura graphic novel from Tharg and never even got around to reading it. Give me Inaba/Hondo City Justice every time!

So I'm voting Vanguard. It didn't set the world on fire, no, but it was a solidly crafted thrill. Starting in my first ever prog, it was lovely to have something that didn't depend on decades of past continuity.

Looks like I might not need to worry about which one Vanguard was after all BUT you still do. You can still vote today and I will count it up in the morning.

VOTING CLOSED

Well I've given my vote for Vanguard elsewhere... in error so its a relief it didn't even get close to being needed here as

Shimura

simply cuts aside the opposition to ride into Round 2.
