Oddboy

Why is he so good? Yeah what the others said.

He's the MASTER, he really is...

Re: From Hell - if you're going to watch the movie, it's probably better to watch it before reading the comic - the movie is more yer Miss Marple Whodunnit? while the comic is more Columbo: you know who does it all the way through.
If you know who does it, there is little worth left in the film.

The script for BIG NUMBERS allegedly covered a tablecloth, 'til the artist shredded it...

"From what you've said isn't that Beethoven's Fifth?"

*ahem* er, yes. That's what I meant. Fifth.

Oddboy

Moore does know his Beethoven, doesn't he...
His "Ode to Joy" features significantly in Top Ten.

it is worth noting, especially with watchmen, that these stories are often done in collaboration with the artist, and so many cunning details or funky tricks in the pages are the product of the artists invention. i know that Gibbons contributed quite a bit to the storytelling of watchmen, aside from just being the pencil monkey.

giving ALL the credit to Alan is a bit like giving all the credit for the "...of the dead" movies to romero. other folks have a significant input on these projects.

always thought Top 10 benefited hugely from the choice and input of the artist Gene Ha (?)

Point taken Frazer. Certainly, none of these books would be as good without such astute choice of artists. I doubt Halo Jones would have been as effective without Gibson, Watchmeb without Gibbons etc.

So. My girlfriend, worried about my continual slide towards bankruptcy, has told me I should only buy one graphic novel a month.

The question is - which Moore sould I read next?

OOOh!Back in the knife drawer F! ;p

But seriously,a point well made. The great thing about comics is the grouip effort-he gets some great artists and one of the strengths of hte stuff he's written is the consistencey of artist through the story,so you do get one vision of the thing.Like in From Hell, that took, what, about 10 years to get finished? If Edddie Campbell hadn't been the man that he was,it Definately wouldn't have had the same impact.
Or maybe the artists make the effort because he'll curse them otherwise.

(ps-whens #6 of LOEG,vol.2 out??)
To tell the truth, you can all get screwed.

Oddboy

I can't recommend Top Ten highly enough!
But be warned: Books 1 & 2 are both part of the same run really (at the end of Book 2 is says "END OF SEASON 1") - so either you'll have to get book 2 next month, or convince your girlf* that they technically count as one book.

* "girlf" is the correct term, I believe, as used in the font of all relationship-knowledge magazine "J17".

Go for his run on Marvelman. Absolutely the best superhero comic ever.
The perspective on that chairs all wrong

Patrick Moore.

It'll save you money and boring conversations on how wonderful Alan Moore is. Also save you buying a leather jacket, growing a ponytail whilst losing all the hair from the front of your head and joining the boring comic elite who wax lyrical about Alan Moore.

People who think John Wagner's any cop, oh that's just a boring comic elite that is.  Yeah people go on about how good he is, but he isn't, not really.  It's just tedious having to hear people banging on about it to be honest.  Forget him, get on without him, time to move on!

Feel free to past this into any conversation about comic artists and writers on message boards, it could save valuable time...

"People who think (insert comic creator name here) is any cop, oh that's just a boring comic elite that is"

As far as I know Moore is no communist and has never expressed any admiration for that ideology,  but he does have an anarchistic side to him which basically means no leaders and responsibility for one's own actions; (not the destructive violent misinterpretation by modern anarchy) more of a high moral ideal really which comes through in his work quite strongly.

He has expressed he does not harbour any love for political or religious zealotry by elites or self appointed autocrats, so he proabably is more of a democratic socialist, not a communist. That's pretty cool with me and he writes bloody good as well.

Buddy

There was a Swamp Thing that really struck a chord with me.. My Blue Heaven I think it was called. Fantastic.

Reading this thread had urged me to re-read V and Watchmen - it's been so long since I read them I've forgotten what fantastic stories they are.

I met him once you know..

Yeah Crono Cops is also great comic book storytelling, reprinted in the Meg recently.. Rebellion should reprint all his Time twisters & Future Shocks.

I can't keep up with everything he's doing at the moment.. Top Ten (never read), Tom Strong (got first few issues), Promethia (never read), LoEG (have em all) etc... can't aford to buy that many books a month.

Oddboy

I got & read the first Promethea book at the weekend... very good, left me wanting mo(o)re.

I like the way he plays with 'time' - Promethea is set in 1999 but is blatently futuristic (hover cars etc.)  It's the 1999 of the 60s / 70s.
