Title: The Daily Dredds: Vol 1
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 22 September, 2014, 04:49:16 PM

The Daily Dredds: v. 1 (Judge Dredd)Hardcover– 6 Nov 2014

by John Wagner(Author), Alan Grant(Author), Ron Smith(Author)

This just popped up on my Amazon list and this Christmas is gonna be an exceptional one with all the Dredd items coming but this is gonna be so hard to not look at before it's wrapped up and placed under the tree.

The RRP is £30 and here's the official write up from Amazon

Starting 1982 the national newspaper The Daily Star ran a Judge Dredd comic strip written by John Wagner and Alan Grant and illustrated by Ron Smith. It has never been collected in its entirety before. This is a landmark collection.

Gotta put up a Mega Thanks to all those who are involved with searching for those missing pages, which seemed to be hidden all over. From reading the other thread it went right down to the wire with people searching everywhere and asking the whole planet at times. You should all feel proud of helping make this happen.

This is not the final cover but it brightens up the post ;)

By the way, do you honestly think that this is gonna be wrapped up and left under the tree

The only thing more excitingthan this volume is volume 2, which should be chock-full of unreprinted Wagner/Grant goodness!

Intrigued to see how they package this. Given that its hardback my mind has wondered to the rather great job that Titan did with the Alex Raymond Flash Gordon strips they reprinted over the last couple of years (well when they weren't messing up the page order). Now if Rebellion could get the package as nice as that, a page per strip really lets the air breathe, that would be £30 very well spent.

Oh, I adore the picture... makes it more real. Obvious typos drive me nuts. As a wee nipper the Daily Star Dredds were my gateway thrill long before I was ever allowed to get the Prog. I can't exaggerate just how much I am looking forward to this. :D

Snap! The Daily Record went on strike for a Summer, and our newsagent substituted the Star in its stead. Gibson Dredd strip, and Kathy Lloyd doing likewise.

Still remember cutting out those concentrated thrills from the paper and marvelling that the ink stains exceeded even those of the prog. This is not a criticism! I hope the hardback does that... ::)

They were daily weren't they?

Remembered collecting these as a kid cutting them out and putting them in a scrap book, loved them (God knows what happened to that scrap book).

Ordered it today as just noticed the banner ad , would have gutted to miss it as there are only 250 copies (why no marketing email?). Anyway very pleased they have done this and will look forward to future volumes.

From 1981-1986 a weekly (usually self-contained) strip was published on a Saturday. A daily (serial) strip started in Jan 1986 and ran until 1998.

Saw this lovely £30 volume in Waterstones today. It's huge... And each page has notes on previous reprints and dates. It was lovely to see the odd Steve Dillon, Ian Gibson & even a single Brett Ewins strip. A high quality book - well done Rebellion & all involved.

Yeah,  it's lovely.  A bit out of my price range this week due to Zenith and MiracleMan vol2, but it's pencilled in.

It did feel a bit "loose" with regards to the binding,  but I guess that's due to the format and weight distribution when being handled.

I'll find time to post something a little longer soon, but first thoughts - it's bloody marvellous. The editorial work that's gone into this is exceptional. Rebellion could have reprinted another best-of the Dredd strips, then they could have chosen to republish only those that they had decent copies of, then they could have chosen to stick with the poor quality scans rather than use the last minute discoveries...

By Rebellion, I mean Keith. Excellent job. Well done, and worth all the effort. Thanks.

The November 83 strip was probably one of the 3 miscellaneous strips included in the section at the end of the weeklies. Away from my list at the moment, but I seem to recall that there were 2 weeks where the strip couldn't be identified due to gaps in the British Library collection, and as you can see 3 strips left over.  Which strip went in which slot, and which was the 'spare' is anyone's guess.

He wasn't wrong, you know. And thankfully someone was in.

I'm number 65, and a quick flick through reveals a very handsome looking book, indeed.
So a big 'well done' to all involved.

I guess a good few of us on here have bought similar releases for these, over the years, but to finally have all the strips, and in order, makes this book indispensable.

That would depend on how they formatted it - there are another 1400 or so daily strips by Wagner/Grant with Gibson/Collinson art... if they stuck to the 2 strips per page you could get most of them in a vol 2 - given the format of this book is mainly based on the landscape Saturday ones though, who knows.... There are over 3500 daily strips on top of those already in this book

Got mine earlier this afternoon (#43) and what an amazing book it is. Following on from my post in the Zenith topic, I first of all have to say that this is another beautifully designed book. In addition to the aesthetic look however, I have to also say that I love that two page list of contents with each strip dated, and also how each strip's title, creative team and other sources of being reprinted, if any, are provided on each page. You ain't kidding when you say, "We included everything". Just brilliant, guys.

As a small side note, like SBT, I also noticed that the binding's a wee bit loose feeling when you have enough pages stacked to the left hand side but it hasn't, and I don't think will, cause me any problems. Taken a page at a time, it's all good and lies comfortably on the knees or a table. It was a small worry of mine, how the book would turn out in this landscape format, how it would be to read, but it's absolutely fine and another good job in the hardback line.

With this, Zenith and the Mek Files earlier in the year, I'm completely convinced that the hardbacks to be released next year are going to be just as amazing, possibly better (my one small complaint about the first volume of the Mek Files, for example, was that some of the artwork of the colour spreads was lost to the gutter, though I suspect this was due to the sheer size of the book). What've we got so far besides continuations of these three anyway? There's the new Slaine, presumably A.B.C. Warriors: Return to Mars, Dan Dare, Dark Justice and Urban Warfare; any other glorious stuff I'm missing?

Anywaaaaay: I've said (gushed) all that but haven't even mentioned the contents of this book. The only Daily Dredd strips I had ever read prior to this volume were the small number collected in the annuals, which I loved as a kid. In fact, these kind of short strips, daily or weekly, were a favourite of mine growing up. Not just these Dredd ones - I also discovered Oor Wullie and The Broons and really enjoyed those two immensely as well, quite the large collection of their annuals lying in the loft. Once I had my own computer as a kid, one of the other discoveries I made was web comics. Never really followed any for a particularly long length of time (except maybe Ctrl+Alt+Del, which admittedly is the only one I can recall a great deal of), but it kept me interested in these sort of daily or short, punchline strips, which got me into a whole lot of other comics as a kid, such as Matt Groening's Life In Hell and I recently discovered one Liz Prince through Top Shelf's recent $3 sale.

All to say that I've always found these sorts of short strips very special, admiring a great deal how talented the writers and artists, or the one person doing both, are at what they do, and consistently at that. In the case of this particular volume, a few things have amazed me from skipping through it. First: however the hell it is that Wagner and Grant could come up with so many of these wonderful strips each week in addition to the work they were doing in the Prog. You would think that, in the shortened format, there wouldn't be enough room for them to come up with some of these but I've been hugely impressed by what I've read so far. It's not difficult to fit a story in these small number of panels, I think, but it is difficult to make that very short story entertaining. And yet they succeed every time whilst continuing to convey the characters and sense of humour just as they appear in the Prog. That last point is very interesting, I think. Put it this way: it's been quite some time since I've read through the early Case Files or the Eagle comics collecting Prog stories from this time and yet I recognised the dialogue and humour as very much belonging to that era. Fantastic.

The second thing is of course the magnificent Ron Smith. Back when I was growing up again, he was my favourite Dredd artist (I think he may have been my dad's too as I'm sure several of the annuals are signed by him) and although it has, as I say, been a while since I read any of those early tales with him on art duty, I wouldn't be surprised if this still wasn't was the case. What amazed me about Wagner and Grant simply shocks me in his case. How the fuck is it that all the strips collected here look this good? The amount of detail in these is simply insane / too good to be true / impossible / bananas. It's so wrong, but so good. Just how the man was capable of these things each week is beyond my understanding. I'm really not even sure that you'll find a page of his (not to discredit the other artist's work at all, but skimming through, I simply passed over their stuff until I read this proper at a later date simply because of how astounding Smith's was) in this volume that you can point to and say he missed a storytelling beat in - everything about the artwork here is just perfection and I can't wait to see more in the next volume.

To conclude all this rambling, I guess I can only say that this is most assuredly one of my favourite purchases of the year. Every Dredd fan needs to get their hands on this bad boy.

Just got my copy today and it is a lovely book.

I do have a lot of these already from previous reprinting, but never knew the very first one was an adaptation of the first ever Dredd from Prog 2. That was quite an inspired idea to get a story out at short notice. One thing that doesn't sit will is the perp being described as a Futsie and then given a sentence, as it is well established that Futsie requires medical treatment not the cubes (or in this case Devil' Island). Indeed the 4th strip addresses just that. Also the foreword on this the genesis of this first strip is a bit odd with the asterixed explanation.

Sorry as I don't want to pick holes with what are very very minor quibbles - it really does look like a fantastic book and I can't wait to read /re-read these.

My copy showed up today, along with Zenith Phase One. Both look lovely. Well, apart from The Book Depository having apparently dropped both of them on their corners. Gnh. To think I used to get miffed with Amazon—turns out WHSmith and The Book Depository (sort of Amazon anyway) are even worse when it comes to books arriving in decent nick. Is anywhere else any better? (I'd buy more from FPI, but they never seem to have half the stuff I want in stock.)

I've never heard of Wordery before, but that looks like a good bet to at least try in the future. As for the NC, I'm happy going direct and not against paying full cover-price (versus online discounts), but then when the costs mount up due to postage, it's harder to justify now we've a mini-IP in the house.

There was a bit of cross-over where there was a full-colour self-contained story on the Saturday and the continuing black and white single-line strip continuing on weekdays.  Not sure what year it switched to a more straightforward six-days a week continuing story though.

Received this last week - a gorgeous book. Well done to all involved!

Now with Christmas/New Years truly out of the way, I've had time to properly have a look at Volume One.

Do we know for sure where the three 'misc strips' where originally printed?

And why are a few of the 1986 strips in portrait format instead of landscape format?  I can't imagine how they would have fit on the newspaper pages at the time.

Finally got (and devoured this).

What a treat. To be honest this surpassed my expectations. It's like the pure, distilled essence of good Dredd - no intergalactic space sagas, no undead super-fiends, no jaunts to other Mega-cities so other writers can springboard their new character into the Dreddverse - just a cop on his beat, the cits being reliably stupid/violent, and Dredd handing out the sentences. That's my favourite kind of Dredd story and one we rarely get these days, so it's lovely to have a book of almost nothing else!

I love that the format allows Wagner and Grant to really just cut loose in a way that the prog perhaps didn't. Sometimes they're clearly having great fun just being deliberately, indulgently stupid, or even breaking the fourth wall - like Dredd arresting the man who cryogenically revives Cliff Richard on the grounds of bad taste. When the guy protests that it's not illegal, Dredd growls 'It's my strip, creep. I'll decide what's legal.'

Some genuinely nice call-backs to events in the main strip, too; the Judge Souster memorial, the long-suffering sector 403 getting nuked for a third time, the Alphabet Killer's first victim being Aaron B. Aardvark (Aaron A. Aardvark having been snuffed out by Cal, of course); it's genuinely clever/subtle stuff. On a similar note there's an awful lot of worldbuilding crammed into this book. All helps give these strips an extra life beyond the goofy gags and sometimes groan-worthy punchlines.

Am I right in thinking that's it for the Saturday strips now, and a second volume would be all longer-form daily strips?

Amen brother. Just shed loads of MC-1 craziness - Judge Dredd at its best.

I thought it was a 2016 release date, and remember thinking it was a very long way off - maybe November this year?

I have no idea what resources are available for putting together volume 2 or how far down the line robo-keef is, but this listing on ebay might be useful:

Depending on how big the book is the first few strips could be scanned from their reprints in the prog & meg. Originals of all the other episodes exist in private collections. One episode is missing entirely as to wasn't printed (ep 3530 - 3536 was printed in its place and then again in the correct order - guess there was a misreading of the last digit).

Be interesting to see how the colour episodes reproduce. A lot of the colour on them as originally printed is very poor - mis-aligned or mis-coloured. You'd never think Dread's uniform had so much yellow on it!

Lots of people will have read them.  Once.

glassstanley - Can you provide any more details about the 'missing episode'? Does it exist anywhere? I do so hate loose ends!
Thanks.

Now up for pre-order at Amazon UK:

The Daily Dredds Vol. 2 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Daily-Dredds-Vol-2/dp/1781084599) - Hardcover, 6th October 2016, 96 pages.

This second volume of the Daily Star Dredds features the weekly strips published in the popular national tabloid that ran between July 1986 to the end of 1988, featuring action-packed stories from John Wagner and Alan Grant and sumptuous  art from Ian Gibson, Mike Collins and the legendary Ron Smith.

It's unlikely to be 96 pages when volume 1 was 320 pages.

I agree.  That's what the Amazon listing has at the moment, but there have been a number of dubious elements to recent listings supplied by Tharg's PR people.

Not that Amazon aren't prone to list softbacks as hardbacks themselves.

Yes it is already been confirmed by a droid on another thread that the page count is erroneous.
