I've only just got round to playing this, and it's definitely took a lot from Dredd hasn't it. You can probably find a MC1 equivalent for most of Night City's goings on, but the most recent thing I noticed is a character I just got introduced to - He's a singer with a synthetic voice implant who lives in an opulent home tended to by robots and is wearing a smoking jacket/dressing gown thing when you first meet him. Remind you of anyone? :D

It's one of the most gorgeous open-worlds I've ever seen and I'm enjoying the game a ton, but man it feels like it's always the bridesmaid never the bride with Dredd :'I

Games / Sniper Elite 5 Easter Egg

Hi everyone, it's been a while! I was playing Sniper Elite 5 (it's brilliant of course!), and I found this fun Easter egg. It's tucked away in a building on the 3rd mission, a picture of a certain dashing fellow, the 'King' himself :D

Finished a couple of games yesterday, first being the Resident Evil 3 remake. People don't seem to hold this in as high regard as some of the series, I know RE1 and RE2 are pretty iconic for most (and me too) but RE3 has always had a real strong place in my heart probably because of when and where I played it and the memories it brings back! Lots of student flat nostalgia of playing through with my flatmate while she yelled STAAAAARS whenever the Nemesis appeared. Great times. This is another brilliant remake job, looks gorgeous, feels great to play and while it's shorter and more linear than most RE games I was totally fine with that as banging your head against obtuse puzzles and getting horribly lost and backtracking constantly are the elements of Resident Evil that I tend to gloss over when I think of my fondness for it. Loved this.

Good to hear it went down so well! I loved the original RE3 too (I think I may have given my thoughts in this very thread!), it seems like that's one of the bigger indicators of how much you'll like this version. I've had to hold off for now, because money!

A fellow dev once nailed what was great about 2016 when he called each room a combat puzzle needing solved, and the areas and spawns really felt like puzzle challenges that you had to figure out strategies for, and felt smart and satisfied when you cracked them.

Id themselves talk about the gameplay in this way too, it's spot on isn't it. Sorry to hear it was so disappointing, that sucks :( .

I finished my playthrough a couple of days ago, it's not perfect but I am firmly in the 'loved it' camp. I agree with some of the criticisms like there's a little bloat that could be trimmed down for sure, and the marauder is annoying at least half the time he shows up, nothing that spoilt the game for me but certainly imperfections. I should be able to change weapons whilst glory killing, to set up the next move!

I found they upped the puzzle/strategy element to the combat rather than reduced it though. I really had to think on my feet to get through fights, using the weapons and abilities against the enemies that were weak to them, in whatever order they were available to me during a hectic fight.

It's harder for a lot of people as a result I think, certainly for me. If you don't engage with that puzzle completely some of the harder fights will give you plenty of trouble, you could muddle through a lot more in Doom 2016. It's exhilarating because of that though, and if need be there are lots of ways to make the game easier from the difficulty setting to cheats you can activate. I didn't play on ultra violence, and that's usually my go-to with Doom from playing so much of the series through my life. Not that it means much coming to a totally different game but still, symbolically I stepped down in difficulty :D

The graphics and music are some of the best I've ever seen, the game is nuts in that regard and also a total love letter to doom fans, with tons of easter eggs and unlockables. I just generally noticed more nods to the originals too, From more faithful looking weapons, to returning monsters and music from the originals quite often baked into the soundtrack somewhere (there was plenty of that in Doom 2016 too, I just seemed to notice it more here). I also moved the gun to the middle of the screen in the settings, anything to make it feel more Doom-y!

There's been more lore written than I perhaps need, but it's vastly optional, you can just romp through the game ignoring most of the whys and hows, just like all the other Dooms. I did enjoy what story was shown though, and there were some intriguing lines later on which should make for an interesting sequel!

I also played through Yakuza 0, that was a really fun game, prequel to Yak 1. It's like taking a little holiday to Japan, except you have to stay in Roppongi the entire time and you see a few millennia-worth of Japanese street violence in one visit. Oh and it's the 80s. So it's pretty sleazy, with you being in the criminal underworld in the red light district of a hyper-violent boom-time Japan. Especially if you do the side missions, you'll really see some slimy shit.

The combat's great, the main story was mostly great soapy fun, much recommended if weird Japanese stuff is your cup of tea!

I hope a Dredd show that's both good and faithful to its world is possible! You can do it Rebellion!!!!

Just played through Darksiders Genesis, really enjoyed it! They did an awesome job translating the Darksiders combat and puzzles into a top down dungeon loot game. The loot system revolves around enemies having a % chance to drop their soul, which you can then equip in a skill tree to give you benefits particular to that soul. Where you put it in the skill tree can also affect whether you get an extra bonus or not, and the more of the same soul you acquire, the more it levels up. Some IGA castlevanias have something similar (although a bit simpler), I've always liked it!

The story was fine, it's a prequel filling in some gaps in the plot but I'm anxious to get back to the current timeline with the next game and 'finish the fight' as they say. It's nice to see lots of interaction between two horsemen though, which is something we haven't seen yet, and there's lots of characterisation in their dialogue.

I'm going to play through it on Apocalpyptic difficulty next, just waiting for a friend to get round to it as it's co-op!

Yakuza 0 is out on game pass on the 26th I think, that's the next big one for me before Doom Eternal next month!

What, buying a hundred million pound complex to convert into a film studio isn't a sign?

Exciting isnt it!!! I think when this was announced a lot of people (myself included) assumed Rebellion had pitched this to a service and it was just going to get made and funded by Netflix or whoever very soon. Turns out they're doing it absolutely all themselves down to owning the very studio it is filmed in, so it may take a while yet! It should be incredibly faithful to the comics as a result. I wonder if it was pitched first, and then the feedback about what would need changing was what spurred them on to go full DIY.

I completed Jedi: Fallen Order (the story anyway - I'm not really a trophy hunter), which was an incredibly satisfying Star Wars gaming experience.  Contender for GOTY for me!

I played some of this at a friend's this last weekend, absolutely cracking! What I played was like a gorgeous sci fi Zelda/Dark Souls baby. Definitely on the to-do list now.

Nowadays we tend to view Obi-Wan's 'Strike me down and I'll become more powerful than ....' line as more metaphorical, an inspiration for Luke and a way of ensuring enmity for his father, but it may well originally have been intended to be an actual threat - and one that finds expression in JJ's raiding of Lucas' notes for TRoS, in the very McQuarrie throne room that it was supposed to have played out in.

Interesting. I think I always thought of it being like 'I'll be an immortal omnipresent space ghost' when I was young (not in those exact words :D ), but as an adult I definitely pick up on the sense of martyrdom in the line a lot more than I did then. And I guess he's robbing Darth Vader of the satisfaction of breaking him whilst simultaneously doing the most Jedi thing he can, sacrificing himself for others. That must really have got up Vader's nose. Not that that last thought relates to the line itself.

I think its the inherent limitations of the Star Wars franchise in general. It works as a broad space fantasy in a single film, or even a trilogy. But as soon as you start expanding it beyond that, it raises all sorts of weird questions about how it all works as a universe, the tech, how the Force works etc, and the answers to those questions can never be satisfying.

I don't think Star Wars was necessarily destined to falter as the world was explored, the force powers for example already had enough definition for me as needed really by the end of the original trilogy, it didn't have to go too much further in that respect. But that's not to say you couldn't expand the force and explore it more, it just needed to be a bit more careful I think to avoid too many plot inconsistencies, and a situation where the writers have carte blanche to pull force powers out of their bottom as and when they think it'd be cool.

The prequels dealt with expansion of the force in a better way I think in places (It's been a while). Like supposed mountain monks that can slow their heart to 3 beats a minute, perhaps such an incredible power like resurrecting the dead should be restricted to people who have strived their entire life to be able to do it like one SeƱor Plagueis

I guess you're always going to have space bars with space beer and a space band and space chess and all that kind of thing. It can be done well, perhaps it's more the execution?

Maybe the little midichlorians themselves are being prompted into action, healing wounds like nanobots.

I didn't mind any of the new force powers and Jedi abilities, but it does beg the question why have they not been used before (and regularly, considering how useful they are) in most cases. Similar to the Holdo manoeuvre I suppose.
Like if the force ghosts can still wield the force in the real world as we see with Luke at one point, why don't they float onto the bridges of star destroyers and force slam all the crew for us, or get all the ghosts together and pile on Palpatine
I just got back from seeing it, definitely agree with the 'enjoyable bollocks' appraisal. It was a messy, overloaded film and had plenty of silly moments but I had a good time just soaking it all up! Enjoyed the action and got hit in the feels a couple of times. We all felt very similarly about the film too, which doesn't often happen.

As has been mentioned by others it definitely seemed to me like he was trying to cram two films into one, having to set lots of new stuff up and explain other things away after ep8.

Just got back from a triple bill. I thought it was dreadful, but hugely enjoyable!

This speaks to me.

I'm going to see it with my mates this Monday coming, it'll be fun seeing friends, munching popcorn and soaking up the CGI! It could be terrible like I thought TLJ was but as I'm no longer being invested, I'm going to be able to turn off my brain and just enjoy the spectacle!

Games / Rebellion now own the Bitmap Brothers IP

I wasn't expecting that! With a suitably 90s britsoft pic of the lads, to boot. I'm glad Rebellion have got it, but I hope they do something with it!

What would you like to see come back, if they're snapping up neglected British videogame IP? I'd kill for a modern Cannon Fodder myself! I'd also ask Rockstar if they're arsed about Body Harvest..
