There was a segment on this in the 80's Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World TV series/book. The chapter closed with some hyperbole along the lines of 'if Greek inspiration had matched their ingenuity we'd have reached the nearest star by now... though really it's a wonder no one's making working reproductions for the tourists.
