Title: JULY ART COMP - WORDLESS STORIES
Post by: CrazyFoxMachine on 03 July, 2014, 12:55:00 AM
From June's winner Martintds:

Quote"The great writer Ernest Hemingway famously wrote a story in six words "baby shoes for sale. Never worn". I would like something similar, in that I want you to create a story in one spread with no speech bubbles. Similar to what Brendan McCarthy accomplished in a summer special many moons ago with an epic Johnny alpha spread. You can use any 2000ad character past or present and make it as  small or as large as you need. One spread, no speech bubbles, one story."

So... choose a panel, however long or short - a story told without words- no letterers here !

Remember there are PRIZES TO BE WON - one for the winner, one for Tharg's Choice - ! All entries will be featured on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/2000adartcomp) where they are admired and liked by our 333 followers :D There will also be a bonafide 2000ad droid judging their favourite entry for Droid's Choice....!

Rules are these:

- You can enter as many times as you like but bear in mind it will split your vote so it may not be worth it.
- All entries have to be done specifically for this competition - so no pictures you've done for anything else.

YOU HAVE UNTIL THE 27TH OF JULY WHEN WE WILL MANGLE THE VOTING HEN.

Oooh that's a toughie! Will try and get something in for this month as missed the past 2. It is just what to do??? Does anyone have any links to the Johnny Alpha spread mentioned by CCFM for inspiration?

'Spread' is confusing me a bit, can we have more than one image ie a full page like 'Bob Byrnes's Twisted Tales' or just one image telling a whole story?

Thanks for clarifying! I guess I'm a sucker for rules.....

It's a pretty good idea for the art comp.

It's in a similar vein to the type of comic cover that accurately portrays the story inside in a single image.
Sometimes its possible to deduce the entire interior story just from a cover.

Take this old Jonah Hex for example;

Is it definitely single image rather than panels then?
Title: Re: JULY ART COMP - WORDLESS STORIES
Post by: Martintds on 03 July, 2014, 05:52:19 PM
Yes a single image. As long as there's some kind of visual narrative going on. Thanks Bolt, thats the Brendan McCarthy spread i had in mind.

Interesting theme. What it reminds me of more than anything are the supercovers (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=covers&page=character&choice=SUPER&Comic=2000ad) from the early days. And worth emphasizing that you create a story rather than adapt a favourite story from the past... I think.

daren't enter as I don't have the talent but I was wondering if the winning entry could possibly be the topic for an upcoming short story thread? I.e.: you have to come up with the story behind the art...
just an idea whaddya thinks?
Title: Re: JULY ART COMP - WORDLESS STORIES
Post by: Fungus on 22 July, 2014, 12:03:24 PM
A good idea 2T (and reminiscent of another thread).
I'm thinking the best entries for this theme would be slightly impenetrable, elements that aren't clear-cut and can and should be read different ways?
Dr X comes closest to this, I think.
Hope to see some more entries, I struggled to come up with something I was happy with so gave up. But I like the theme, it's more left-field than usual.

Curious how others see it...

I'm sure there will be a few more entries by Sunday Fungus. I could have picked something easy to go with..such as.. I don't know off the top of my head, "The Apocalypse war - a Sovs perspective" or "Happy endings" or some such..but I decided to be a smartarse and go left field instead. It really wasn't too unlike James theme from the month previous "re-panelled"..only come up with a panel yourself from your own brain !!

Way to late, but I now finally have an idea, but do I have the time??
Wife due to have baby imminently (Due next Wed!) hence lots of panicking and final prep and not a lot of time to sit and sketch.
I will try my best, as have missed the past 2 months comps now and am not happy!!  :(

I love narrative pictures and I thought the new stuff from 3rillers will rarely get a look in for a super cover. So I decided to take it on myself from my idea of a typical composition for 2000ad. I will add the banner post competition, as it's too finicky too late right now. I'm just asking permission from the contemporary artist who I have taken from indiscriminately for my own gain first, to see if I can use the image.

With typical grace and magnanimity, PJ is happy for me to share for which I am very grateful.

I don't know whether the Future Shocks of yore got any cover placement and I'm not sure if 3rillers have had any yet. But if they did they may look something like this. Or if not it is my version of a star scan or reinterpretation of work from a great narrative artist.

Lovely stuff Hoagy. Judgerufian...I wouldn't have picked such a lateral subject if I didn't think the forum members could handle it. I've been watching ye guys a long time now. The quality and imagination shown in the drawings on here is fantastic. I have faith that all the regulars are busily sketching away. Martintds thanks for the kind comments, and I actually managed to sit down for an hour last night and layout some rough pencils which I am quite happy with. Will scan pencils in work today to hopefully start tidying up and inking on the PC tonight (obviously dependant on baby distrupting plans ;))

animes, I was and am in the same boat this month and only directed my art attentions on one picture that took a good month to do. Pencils are my first medium so they took all the fresh learning curve pressures off me. I could go to the picture in coffee breaks. And between heavily pregnant wife guardian duties to the most extremely intense experience life has to offer (and it is a doozy ;)) I could fit it in around the compressed timetable but it also helped take a step back and evaluate my own being for the duration too.

Post natal, I did some more but when penciling became too much of an impossibility with the entry deadline looming it had to be finished in PC which is where I'd have cleaned it up anyway.

Bonno Fortuna to you and yours!

Thank you very much Hoagy!! This is number 3 now so pressure not quite as intense but still a bit stressed. Anyway I have got 3 days to go so reckon I can pull something out of the bag (I am referring to my drawing now not wife and baby by the way!!) ;)

Great Image Hoagy.
If I remember rightly, the 3rillers have had two covers in the past, the first was for the giant robots story '15 minutes' and the second was for the more recent story of post financial crash London drawn by John Davis Hunt.
