Post by: seanharry on 03 March, 2019, 11:36:59 PM
There are quite a few British strips that sadle have not been collected into trade editions. This is a list of the comics that I would most like to have a collected edition for on my bookshelf. Hopefully Rebellion or Titan can help fill in a few of these gaps:-

Mind Wars
This strip appeared in Starlord from issue two, and ran until the final issue of the comic with a firm conclusion (hence it not crossing over to 2000ad along with Starlord and RoBusters). I think had it appeared in 2000AD it would be considered a classic, and Jesus Redondo's standing with readers would be a lot strong. A strong, adult story for this sci-fi epic and some truly fantastic artwork by Redondo, the fact that Rebellion have not collected it yet seems rather odd. Apparently David Roach owns most of the origional artwork, so if he lets Rebellion scan it all in, a really fantastic collection could be produced.

Laser Eraser & Pressbutton
First appearing in Sounds Magazine drawn by Alan Moore (yes, that Alan Moore), before moving onto Warrior with Steve Dillon producing some of his best art ever, this strip written by Steve Moore is brilliant, and it's a crime that it's never been collected. Brian Bolland, Gary Leach and Cam Kennedy provided the art for the back up strips, Zirk and Ektryn. Given all that amazing talent involved, I'm astonished that this has never been collected as a trade.

Third World War
I would love to reread this just to see how it holds up in todays political climate. I think it actually may be even more relevant. Originally appearing in Crisis, and featuring some mouth wateringly beautiful painted art by Ezquerra, writer Pat Mills does lay on the political commentary with a trowel. It is also remarkable similar to Martha Washington, which Miller and Gibbons produced after.

Night Zero
A real fun generic dystopian sci-fi action yarn from film critic John Brosnan with some solid art by Kev Hopgood. I find it peculiar that this hasn't been collected by Rebellion.

Outcasts
A 12 issue DC comic written by John Wagner and Alan Grant, with art by Cam Kennedy. American readers just didn't get it, but I suspect that British fans would lap it up. A lot of ideas from Judge Dredd get recycled in this, but that still doesn't stop it from being a lot of fun. It apparently wasn't a success, hence DC never collecting it. Can't they licence it to Rebellion?

The New Statesmen
I remember finding the plot to this impenetrable when I read it in Crisis. I suspect it will all make a lot more sense if I was to read it again in a collected edition. 2000ad's attempt at a Watchmen style deconstruction of the Superhero genre, with and added political slant. Great painted artwork by Jim Baikie and the new comer Sean Phillips.

The Driver
A love it or loathe it strip that appeared in Toxic! from David Leach and Jeremy Banx. This strip made me laugh out loud, though the final pages brought a tear to my eye.

Time Quake
Very much a case of great plots and art wrecked by a dismal, two dimensional central character. Jim Blocker was every bit as awful as his name suggests, a low rent Bill Savage, but the stories, particularly the second featuring time travelling Nazis, where great. One of Starlords lesser strips, but if stuff like Turbo Jones can get a collected edition, then there is no excuse for Rebellion not putting this out.

The Tower King
I remember when the Eagle was relaunched in the eighties, I was excited from a new sci-fi comic from the publishers of 2000AD. Sadly it was pretty juvenile, with horrible fumetti photo strips. However, there was one brilliant strip, that could easily have featured in 2000AD, and that was the post apocalyptic tale, The Tower King. Always dependable art by the late, legendary artist Jose Ortiz.

Finn
No idea why this has never been collected, or reappeared in 2000ad. Pat Mills says he has many more stories for the character. The follow on from Third World War, Mills manager to not quite hit you on the head with the politics this time, and keeps his fantastic humour throughout.

Rogue Trooper: Friday
OK, this was a mess. A dull story from Dave Gibbons, and even worse scripts from Michael Fleisher. but the art from Will Simpson and Ron Smith is gorgeous, and for that alone I'd like a collected edition.

The House Of Daemon
This is one that I have never read, which I regret. I stopped reading Eagle once The Tower King finished, and as a result I missed this tale, from John Wagner, Alan Grant and Jose Ortiz (the team who would later give us The Thirteenth Floor). I don't know if it is good or bad, but a horror strip from that team certainly has my interest.

Dan Dare
The revamped Eagle version of Dan Dare was written by John Wagner, Alan Grant and among the artists where Ian Kennedy. I only have fuzzy memories of it. But given the talent behind it I'd love to read it again.

Rose O'Rion / Tyranny Rex /  Synnamon
None have enough material for a collection, but the three could be put together for a collected edition showcasing strong female heroines from 2000ad.

Strontium Dog
OK, this is already available. However, when the strip first appeared in Starlord it featured painted artwork. When the strip moved to 2000ad, for a period the comic was printed on better quality paper, again allowing for paited art on the tale Strontiym Dog Goes To Hell. This has been repeatedly printed in black and white. I'd love to see a collected, hardcover edition along the lines of the Mek Files, which retain the origional colour of the strip.

Nick Jolly: The Flying Highwayman
I have never read this, but it sounds utterly bonkers, and the perfect vehicle for Ron Smiths talents. A 17th century highway man is transported into the 1970's by aliens just for the hell of it, and given futuristic weapons and a flying robot horse to battle supervillains and get into scraps with the police. Add that Dave Gibbons was the fill in artist when Ron got behind, and this makes for a comic that I'd love to see.

The Gibbons/Simpson War Machine story that introduced Friday and a couple of the Fleisher stories with art by Dillon and Walker are already collected in War Machine:

I'm a bit of a fan of War Machine. It's very much of it's time, but it's a good piece. The Fleisher stuff, not so much, and I'd be very surprised if Rebellion has any plans to collect these. Maybe in a Meg floppy for the Ron Smith artwork alone?

I'd love to see complete reprints of The Spider and Rat Trap. Obviously, the Most Desired would be Doomlord- but I understand that's still under the control of the Dan Bloody Dare Corporation and unlikely to see print this side of the apocalypse (or Brexit, whichever comes first). A vote for The Driver here too.
Before all of that though, Sinister Dexter from the top, and complete.

From your list, the Megazine floppy is your friend!
Check Wikipedia for a full list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_Dredd_Megazine#Reprints (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_Dredd_Megazine#Reprints)

As well as those mentioned above, Night Zero has had its day (Meg 338); Beyond Zero has had a reprint, too, although they've yet to do Below Zero - presumably because it's too long to fit into one floppy, and not really good enough to fit across two with a secondary story.

Rose O'Rion was with Meg 354
Synnamon with Meg 368 and 369
+ the first (and best) two books of Finn (Megs 329 + 361)

Tyranny Rex has had some stories collected, but of all your list this is the 2000AD strip for me that most wants a proper trade collection! She's a super cool character whose history was kind of hidden away in too many specials.

Here, let me Hachette that for you...
Tyranny Rex
Under Foreign Skies
Strips from the 1988 and 1989 SciFi Specials
Strip from the 1989 Winter Special
Soft Bodies
Fervent & Lobe strip from the 1990 SciFi special
Fervent & Lobe: Issigri Variations
Almaranda: Solstice
Deus Ex Machina
The Comeback
Strip from the 2018 SciFi Special

-That's 250 pages already, and you could add various covers and pin-ups, not to mention at least 4 text stories if you were so inclined.

I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the flopies.

I am after a nice trade, preferably in hardback, that can then go nicely on my bookshelf.

Fairly unlikely that you'll get a hardback if it's been/being reprinted in the floppies, though. You could get the floppies in question (which usually have fairly decent repro) and get them bound yourself...

Hibernia Comics still have copies of the collected Doomlord available.

The Dan Dare Corporation has liscened properties out to Rebellion, Hibernia and Titan in the past for reprints. Rebellion have so much material that they own the copyright to still to print, they probably have to interest in reprinting a liscenced property. But maybe Titan or Hibernia?

IDW currently have the licence for Sonic The Hedgehog.

When they got the Star Trek licence, they reprinted all the old British stuff from the 1960's.

So if enough people contacted IDW and asked them to put out a collection of the UK Sonic comic (which I believe Mike McMahon worked on), I'm sure that they would consider it.

I'd buy a complete Computer warrior up to the point Bobby became the Warlord and invited readers to play the games. I liked it when it was dark and lots of missing children were enslaved as mechanics on 'The Great American Road Race'. Lots of cracking art too - Ian Kennedy and Robin Smith from this parish amongst others.

Regrettably that is one of the strips that Dan Dare Corporation are sitting on.  Someone from this parish was putting together an article for a retro game mag that they nixed for some bizarre reason.  Some classic games of the time and some outstanding artwork, as you say.  Would make for an interesting piece of work mixed in with articles about the original games as well.

I don't think it's talking out of school to say that Hibernia have looked at the possibility of more Doomlord/other DDC reprints, but for a couple of reasons it's just not been possible. We managed to snag a fantastic short Doomlord tale (art by the late, great Jim Baikie) for the Eagle Adventure Special but other further reprints just haven't come together. I'd love to have a crack at repro and design on a collection of the photo-stories (I've got the whole lot scanned already!) as they're amazing stuff, so maybe one day...

re: Computer Warrior. AFAIK, it's another DDC-owned strip, but the big issue here isn't so much licensing costs etc. with DDC but with the complexity of figuring out whether it's even possible to reprint it without agreement/further licensing costs from the companies who now own the various real-world games referenced. I think I've gone over this here before, but as a for-example here's what you might run into just collecting the first 5 or 6 stories:

The Ultimate Warrior - Zyklon Attack (clear as far as rights-holders apart from DDC, if I remember correctly)

Computer Warrior - Wizard of Wor (developed by Dave Nutting Associates and published by Midway, Midway folded in 2010 and a substantial chunk of their catalogue was purchased by Warner Bros. Unknown if Wizard of Wor was included in that purchase)

Computer Warrior - Pastfinder (published by Activision and now presumably owned by Activision-Blizzard, but it would depend on the publishing contract between Activision and the original developer, Dave Lubar)

Computer Warrior - Rescue on Fractalus (developed by Lucasfilm Games and published by Activision. Unclear whether rights reverted to Lucasfilm Games - in which case it may now be owned by Disney - or Activision, in which case it would be ActiBlizz again)

Computer Warrior - The Great American Cross-Country Road Race (Activision-Blizzard, as far as I know but again, original publishing contracts may mean rights reverted to the designer)

Computer Warrior - Ghostbusters (the real doozy - I believe the game was developed by David Crane and published by Activision, so you'd expect this to be ActiBlizz again, but I *think* that Ghostbusters and associated merchandising etc. also involves Sony Pictures, Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis' estate, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. It's unclear exactly who would need to be involved, but even finding out could be enormously time-consuming and prohibitively expensive)

I love Computer Warrior and would dearly like to see it reprinted, but it seems like such a rights nightmare that I can't ever see it happening outside of fanscans etc.

I was the one putting together the article. First time around, they denied permission, demanding money. Perhaps they didn't understand what I was after. They did later provide permission if a single copyright line was included. I got an interview with Aan Grant, and my plan was to then add an overview of the strip, and a comparison of some story arcs with the original games. The problem is Eagle scans were at the time quite low-res and scattergun. I've no idea if that situation has since improved. (If anyone has high-quality and fairly complete CW scans, let me know and I'll apporach the mag again.)

I'm not a legal expert <pause for gasps> but would the same laws that allowed the banned bits of the Cursed Earth to be reprinted not apply here? You'd hope that a reprint clause would have been included in the original agreement - the stories were effectively free publicity for the games.
Title: Re: Reprint This:- UK Comics I'd Like To See Collected Editions Of
Post by: IndigoPrime on 06 March, 2019, 10:13:25 AM
Nope. The Cursed Earth stuff gets away with reprint on the basis of being satire. Satire laws in the UK are... problematic (to say the least), but that's the legal justification. The games in Computer Warrior were subject to licensing agreements that would almost certainly have applied for a fixed term and/or specific editions. (Note how Rebellion recently said The Stainless Steel Rat may not appear again, because they'd have to go through the motions again with the Harrison estate.) Even if not, would those agreements still exist, allowing for reprint? And would the agreements still be valid, in the event of games that had multiple parties of interest (for example, arcade conversions)?

If Computer Warrior was a major title, and owned by people who wanted it out there in the wider world, someone might make the effort. But it isn't on all counts. As I noted, securing the rights to the games is enough of a PITA right now, and I have plenty of stories I can't tell (for legal reasons—I don't want to be sued) about retro games being available for sale right now, by corporations that don't have the rights (or full rights) to the property, and yet blaze ahead anyway, under threat of litigation. Comics based on old games merely adds further layers of complication. In short: it's just not worth the hassle.

My idea - and hear me out here - is to draw cocks and rude words on all the pages and then claim it's technically a satire of the mid-1980s comics form.  I come from a large family so this is pretty much how I remember the material.

IIRC, a lot of the artwork wasn't that specific to the game, so just changing the lettering to refer to something else would probably get around it. The only major problem would be the 'Ghostbusters' episodes...
Title: Re: Reprint This:- UK Comics I'd Like To See Collected Editions Of

It's possible that messing with the lettering on a lot of strips would be enough. But at that point, would readers start being turned off? Hard to know.

(If it wasn't for rights issues, I'd like a volume that headed to the other extreme – make it a full-on celebration of retro-gaming and comics, with strips followed by insight into the games themselves. Kind of like a massively expanded take on what I wanted to do for Retro Gamer.)

It's certainly more likely that a reprint could be achieved like that than by tracking down rights-holders etc., but when you start to talk about scanning, cleaning up *and* re-lettering strips (and possibly editing artwork in cases where art might be potentially infringing) then the time/cost of reprinting starts to mount up and the margins on what is a fairly niche reprint start to get tighter, especially when you take license fees into account (or you have to pass that cost on, which makes the cover price higher and less appealing to your already-small audience).

For something like Charley's War, where Rebellion owned the rights, it was being re-issued in fresh editions during the centenary year, and they could reasonably expect it to be a more reliable seller, re-lettering was likely more justifiable. For something like CW, perhaps less so.

You'd also have to consider the argument that - as fun and appealing as the stories are on their own merits - do you lose some of the quirky appeal of the series by stripping out references to real-world games? Would a reprint that featured neutered "Spookhunters" and "Sub Patrol" storylines have the same draw as "Ghostbusters" and "Silent Service"?

It's an interesting idea, though.

Once you've changed the art to something laughably on-the-nose like "Ghosthunters Plc", you'd arguably have a pretty decent satire defence, though whether you want to test it is another matter.

There was also a point where Eagle readers started appearing in the strips, and I haven't a clue what the legal situation is there: was their actual likeness used by the artists?  Does their being a minor at the time create any additional problems?

Assuming DDC didn't renege on permission admittedly given to me years back, and Retro Gamer were still interested, an article would be viable, because you wouldn't need any further rights – everything would fall under basic fair use. But full reprints of any strips would obviously be a problem. (My thinking at the time was to juxtapose a frame or two of art with a still or two from the game in question, outlining in copy how the strip progressed and compared to the game in question.
