Messages - The Sherman Kid

Quote from: Tyranno-Mek on 29 April, 2023, 05:54:23 PMIt has occurred to me that The Sherman Kid might just be trolling, given his chosen username. In the Dredd story, he's a brat who threatens to set off nukes if he doesn't get his way.

Now that was funny.  made me laugh.

No not trolling. Virtue-signalling is not holding the door open or passing the salt -its doing something with no point to it, except to erhem virtue signal. That is annoying. I thought my opening post was pretty clear why I found it annoying. The same way the docu-series Cleopatra has made her black -that is virtue signalling, and they had a lot of critics. Is it possible she was black, sure. But all evidence we have, and there is a lot,  says no.

Fiennes is right it would be wrong to make James Bond black (unless he had assumed the name, like a title) as the character is established as white. Same goes for a character like Shaft, it would be laughable if he was made white.

As for the stupid, meaningless term 'woke', that's to disparage what is 99% of the time, simple common sense. A put down of inclusion and diversity.

Now.....where are my launch codes...

All for more diversity in Dredd, agree with Indigo -Omar as head of psi-division at the time I thought was a great move. But the fact this stands out, and for example Judge Giant, after well, decades, really says a lot. When did we last have a Asian character in Dredd that wasn't a baddie?

This move however, comes a cross purely as virtue-signalling for the sake of it.

Mick McMahon is pretzel No. 1# -Dredd has long been established as a white character to the readership, regardless of what individual artists thought.

Pete Davidson pretzel No #2 (don't want to bring up individuals, but to respond to you - Quote {Pete Davidson Ethnicity
Pete Davidson's father, Scott Matthew Davidson was a-firefighter, athlete, teacher, coach, and bartender. He had Jewish ancestry, with some distant German, Irish, and Italian roots while his mother, Amy Waters Davidson is of mostly Irish ancestry, with some distant German roots.}

Throwing out logic and basic common sense bothers me (but I'll answer your less than subtle undertone -all racists are the **** of the earth -happy now?)

Am I still allowed to be annoyed by this? Do I have your permission?

Dredd Enjoyable. Good clever story writing. But hold on a minute... -Eartha Fargo is Eustace Fargo's grandmother ??? What? How does that work? She's black. I personally couldn't care less what ethnicity any character is, so long as it works and makes sense. Now we are saying Dredd is mixed race? After 47 years?

Dredd has been established as a white character, as have his parents. Dolman, the clone, his face was shown as white, tons of other examples. Yes, we can all now tie ourselves in pretzel knots to try to explain everything away here-by why go down this path?

If James Bond's grandmother was introduced as Japanese or Black next week, we'd all be scratching our heads. There would be at least some physical indication. Or is any modicum of reality or common sense, just not, a thing, anymore....

Spector Loved it, very funny (reminded me of the dodgy lawyer droid, from Dredd). Great to see new Ezquerra work in print. Actually quite affecting to see it -he is sorely missed.

Dreddnoughts Long may this continue, great art, very well written -'Social Chemotherapy' -what a fantastic line. Kudos.

Quote from: Credo! on 22 March, 2023, 01:27:24 AMRather a lot of absolutism going on there. Reflect a little: try to comprehend the difference between "facts" and your opinions. Recognize that those are two different things. Open your mind.

You say there's no comparison - but in my opinion, there is. We can agree to differ. I found that setting it in the past allowed them some creative freedom. Their Judge system could be different in the past. You haven't provided a cogent counter-argument to that point.

You say I'm wrong about Dredd's character - but having him as a violent stickler (like when he goes to Oz and shoots a boarder in the leg for buzzing him) is exactly true to how he's sometimes portrayed. I don't mind you disagreeing - but it's a bit lazy to just wave it away without an argument and deploy the turds.

Rather a lot of patronising going on here. Why don't you open your mind, reflect a little -recognise that when something when something so bad, so Grud damned awful as this is served up to the readership-they are going to call it out for what it is -utter garbage:-[  :-[  :-[

They won't write a thesis to provide a step by step critique each time.

Anyone ( apparently almost anyone) who has read Dredd for any significant period would instantly recognise how totally off the mark, both in world, and character this was. You don't need to be walked through it. Your Rian Johnson 'creative freedom' defence is not going to wash with anyone, nor you just repeating the word 'stickler'.

I hope the Megazine sees sense and never publishes this kind of IDW craopla again.

Quote from: Credo! on 22 March, 2023, 01:27:24 AMI entirely understand that you hate the MC2 stuff. But, to answer your question - I'd rather MC2 than The Leopard from Lime Street. See, it's just a matter of taste.

On a purely factual level, MC2 does try to honor the milieu. It's set in the past (of the current Dredd timeline), so CJ Goodman has sent Dredd on a mission. MC2 was never really depicted with any detail, so it's a blend of a Mega-City with the tropes of the west coast of the USA: which is pretty much exactly what they did with Texas City in The Judge Child. And Dredd's a grumpy stickler - which is true to the character.

You're still allowed to hate it, but saying it doesn't fit the setting is a bit off the mark.

Seriously? SMH :-[

It's garbage, and bears no resemblance to Dredd's world whatsoever. Here are some actual facts. We have encountered MC2 before in overview and several times its judges directly, there is simply no comparison. Saying it is even remotely true to Dredd's character is also trying to polish the proverbial t***. Sorry, but you are so wide of the mark here it's untrue.

Suggestions / Stop. Just Stop!

Been catching up with my backlog of unread Judge Dredd Megazines. Lots of pluses such as the sublime Lawless and the stunning artwork with the new Dark Judges saga, unfortunately there is something very very wrong with the latest issues.

That's the stinking pile of crapola that is IDW's Mega City Two. My God, it is dire. It makes Space Girls look like Tolstoy. The writing is risible with lame cartoony artwork to match. It bears virtually no resemblance to to Dredd's world nor its titular character. How on earth does anyone buy this garbage from IDW?

More importantly, why inflict this abomination on your loyal readers? The first Dredd movie was traumatic enough.

So stop. Just stop!

Suggestions / Laurel Docks

I do look forward to reading the Meg every month, but sometimes I confess I don't always read it in it's entirety, either being too busy or having gotten distracted. I do make a mental note to come back to it and finish it, but again I confess I sometimes I just plain forget.

Anyhoo having some time on my hands I decide to spend it wisely  ;)and have a huge  binge on back issues, and low and behold found an absolute gem. The Third Person (Meg 385)  by Michael Carroll is for me one of the best one-off Dredd's ever written with perfect art to match by Carl Critchlow.

A script so succinct and sharp you could slice toast with it, and incredibly funny , never laughed so much at a Dredd story since 'Finger of Suspicion' by the mighty John Wagner.

The art is a perfect match for the story, Lauren Docks is in a striking red top but is given an ethereal quality by Critchlow, which adds to the mystique of the character.

Please, please, please could we see more of this character

Suggestions / Judge Dredd TV series
17 September, 2022, 10:04:49 PM
Not been on this forum for quite a while but decided to post as its so darn hard to find info on the net as to exactly where we are with this -its been years since it was announced. I know covid delayed things but after that ....a lot of radio silence.

There is a thread on it on here but STILL no recent updates or Facebook from what I can see.

SO -MAKE AN ANNOUCEMENT!!!  Not just on here but in 2000AD itself -is this project dead or going ahead!??

It's not like we haven't been very patient. Not kind to fans leaving them in limbo for so long or making them scour the net for hours periodically to see what's what.

Thanks in advance.

Megazine / Re: Meg 424 - Thirty Megnificent Years

Congratulations to all on 30 years!! An amazing achievement

Cover Perfect. One of the best ever -a real eye- catcher

Dredd Anything by Wagner and I'm in -great episode (do we know why the art changed mid-way?)

Megatropolis Mmmm not sure what to make of this. Love the art but it's by the numbers noir and I agree with Tordleback it comes across partly as very heavy handed 'humour'. I don't feel we need this alt-history spin-off. Been a while since we had a strip set in another city -that would be more interesting

Dreadnoughts Superb opening page, great start and very promising -One query though how does Glover just disregard a direct order without consequence -that was unclear. Still looking forward as to how this develops

Anderson Anderson generally seems to have fallen from her lofty heights where she used to have solid stories and interesting character developments. Now she comes across as rather staid and boring -which really needs turning around as she used to be a fan favourite -including me.

This story has a good title (nice touch dunthinkin  :D) and interesting premise but doesn't really go anywhere. The detail also seems off-
* Anderson can paralyse at will now?
*They carry boing wherever they go?
*Shakta is no longer blind but somehow still looks blind?
* She later thanks boss for getting 'resources' for sight -why wouldn't they do it, a PSI is valuable?
*Shakta orders pizza, watches netflix on phone or does something incredibly important whilst Anderson is in trouble just FEET away -with a whole page of dialogue passing before she returns.
*Some very clunky and off dialogue

Anderson needs a reboot methinks with fresh writers.

Deliverance A welcome return with the same exquisite artwork -bit of easy exit for Judge Death with another 'death cult', still intrigued to see where it goes

Lawless Loved it. the art is jaw-dropping in it's detail (can't believe they belted it out on the cloud -excellent . A classic episode for me.

Dredd Okay.....can anyone explain what just happened because I must admit I am completely baffled by that ending.
* How did Anderson move through time/go to another realm/dimension whatever she did?
* How did she just shrug off the Angel possession?
* How did Dredd just kill Death with a punch?
* Is Ichabod alive in the present (eyes opened)
* The moon was moved -how did it go back to where it was (the engines were on the dark side) ?

If a story requires so much exposition and still doesn't make sense well...something has gone badly wrong.

An Epic that had its moments but kind of imploded at the end.

PS -Agree that Giant did weirdly act out of character throughout

Making your loyal readership pick up a kiddy comic (again!), is not a smart move.

Actually felt a tinge of embarrassment buying it, and then asked for £5 for the privilege, a tad annoyed. Having spent no time at all reading it a tad more annoyed. Felt like being taken for a sucker, playing on the 'completest' drive your readership has.

The stories were wafer thin, with no great thrills or intrigue to draw them in and the artwork the most basic (like children can't appreciate great artwork?).

Above all the logic of this escapes me.

What age group is this aimed at? I would say 6-9, I know my 10 year old nephew would find this childish, so even older is a dead cert. So how would that age group suddenly buy into the regular prog which is a completely different animal -Deadworld anyone? This isn't a 'transitional prog', not even close.

So what is the aim here? That years down the line they buy a prog themselves because the read one issue? Hardly likely (especially give the instantly forgettable stories that were included).

Bringing in new readership is sound policy but this is not the way to do it.

First time round I suggested a separate issue -but pointed out this is prohibitively expensive, fair enough. I had no idea this was going to be repeated -let alone 4 more times this year! I seriously doubt I will buy another similar issue and I have been with 2000ad since Prog 1 (like so many others).

A better option would be a bagged supplement (like the Meg) so parents could wean them on over time, perhaps and charge a little extra. But as it stands all it is doing is alienating existing readers with, what I imagine virtually no return.

This whole strategy needs a rethink

Dredd That prog will stick with me for a while. A real gut punch seeing Hershey go out like that having been such a great character and stalwart of Dredd's universe for so long (but this is what makes 2000AD so great). it reminded me of the death of Giant -no foreshadowing, just blam -dead, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!

Extremely powerful and poignant,  delivered from the master Wagner and the superb McNeil.
