Title: Durham Red- Born Bad!
Post by: Bolt-01 on 20 December, 2017, 09:37:52 AM
As seen on Down The Tubes (http://downthetubes.net/?p=41998), Durham Red is back from Alec Worley & Ben Willsher.

And it looks to me like this is covering the time period when the Doghouse is shut- so further removing the Strontium Dogs stories from current canon. It may also be an indicator as to whether Red will be back in the main S/D strip- unlikely...

Set to start in prog 2073.

We've got two classic runs to follow here, so me, Ben and Tharg have dug deep.
And we do it because WE LOVE YOU!!
Have a Zarjaz Christmas, sneckers!

Glad to see there will be a new Cozzie, that Red Sonja thing was an embarrassment.  :-X

It'll be interesting to see what they've come up with. Something fitting for the job, hopefully (given that Red is a bounty hunter, not a stripper), rather than someone's fantasy.

Cheers, guys.
REALLY hope you dig this project. We've bent over backwards to work it into Stronti-nuity, preserving and honouring everything that's gone before (and after), while making it our own and keeping the whole thing accessible to new readers (boys AND girls).
Design-wise, me and Ben spent aaaaaages going back and forth, covering everything from body type, hairdo, face, clothes, weapons – even underwear! (Got a lot of female input on that one. :P)

They'll all just brain-farts, mind. Don't panic if you see anything in there that makes you go 'WTF are you thinking, Worley?'

Alec- I'd be surprised if there was something that 'didn't' make me think that.

Trinny & Susannah?  Let no-one have any doubt about the great pains taken in this redesign.  Not since Mick Austin studied a copy of Mayfair he presumably found in a hedge has research be this in-depth!

Not too sure Durham Red in a sports bra is really in line with the batgirl / vampirella re-jigs.

The Vampirella re-design is particularly bad - sportswear meets steampunk. Baffling for the character. Batgirl just looks like a prebucesent girl cosplay and as I assume that's the readership so that's fine. It is just a superhero outfit on a less sexualised frame.

'Half way house' outfits like that vampirella one make little sense - if you're grounding the character and making the outfit more 'practical' then she's not going to wear cycling shorts, she's going to wear practical light but protective trousers. It's seems more an exercise in 'showing skin but not showing SKIN'.

The whole 'urban warrior but female' shorts / big boots / pads / wrist gloves / practical but some how revealing around the chest / thigh outfit is a bit played out in comics and video games. Embrace the unreality of the whole idea and make something unique. That's what 2000AD always did... c'ummon he's wearing a fupping eagle on his shoulder!

Unreality is fine, but I would hope we're a bit beyond 'something for the dads' now in 2000 AD. Durham Red was always a bit Smurfette anyway, but her outfit was a bit... And then the future one was even worse. I do nonetheless agree regarding the Vampirella one, though. The original's not suitable, but the new one's not good.

As for Durham Red, I'm hopeful – given the talent doing it – that we'll see something good. And at least there's the line: "Rest assured, Durham won't be spending the entire series in her underwear!" (You'd really hope not, especially given Tharg's recent defensive answer to a letter about female characters' attire in the Christmas issue.)

Ouch. Poor Ben. Still, if you need a super sub, I can't think of anyone better than Lee.

Really?  Looks like a normal person in their twenties to me - don't know where you live but I see plenty of young adults wearing similar clothing all the time (except for the cape and holsters, obviously!)

(I would have assumed that the towel around her shoulders might also clue folk in to the fact that this isn't the actual costume.)
