The Blind Woman

She is the ultimate Dredd villain. She doesn't break the law; she is as familiar with the rules of MC-1 as he is. Nonetheless, she represents the greatest threat his city will ever face.

A powerful psychic, she despairs of the seething hatred she senses in the citizens. Years of exposure to their feelings have made her take a stand against the city. She knows what they feel: resentment; despair; fear; and helplessness. In her heart, she knows these are the forces that drive citizens to crime while Dredd can't, or won't, see this.

Her epiphany comes when she helps Dredd save the city, but is blinded accidentally by him and coldly left for dead while he bids to save the city. She survives and makes her way to the undercity, where she gathers a following of troggies, muties and outcasts to whom she preaches a peaceful way of life. They are organises into better communities, and the undercity dwellers come to rely on her.

Rumours of a the "Blind Woman" in the undercity reach the Judges. Concerned at the possibility of an organised uprising, Dredd leads a patrol to wipe them out. They find a struggling community, but no overt signs of aggression. Even so, Dredd cannot believe there is no nefarious purpose behind the organisation and feels that, in time, they would come to resent the city dwellers and strike out at them. The Blind Woman is absent at this time, preaching in the still uncivilized parts of the undercity, but returns to find her people dead.

Realising that she must act against the city if she is to avoid being hunted down, the Blind Woman moves into the slums of MC-1. She preaches a kind and gentle way of life, and an almost communist ideology where everyone should help each other to better themselves rather than fighting and bickering.

Slowly, her movement gathers momentum. Images of the Blind Woman, leaning on a stick, begin to be scrawled on walls. Crime, bizarrely, starts to fall in some of the poorer sectors. Perps found guilty of petty crimes (smoking, owning sugar) claim not to be afraid of the judges as they know the Blind Woman will come to their aid eventually.

An investigation into the Blind Woman's activities shows she has done nothing wrong, although Dredd is suspicious that she won't show herself. Crime is also being committed in her name, although her followers are quick to report the perps in question.

Eventually, her movement begins to sweep through the city. It is perceived as a greater threat to the absolute rule of the judges than democracy. Dredd leads an assault team to assassinate the Blind Woman.

Eventually, he tracks her down – killing innocent citizens on the way. In a final confrontation, Dredd recognises the Blind Woman. She attempts to show him the error of his ways, and refers to their past connections. Dredd concedes he can see her point of view, but that he is compelled to save the city as he knows it. With regret, he executes her – despite her having committed no crime.

The Blind Woman is Judge Anderson.

Welcome back. It's always good to get away to foreign climes and submit the locals to odd experiments and torture. But, somewhat akin to the feeling of getting into your own bed after a fortnight away, you always feel better back in your own place.

Films confirmed my long held Scottish prejudice that you are EVIL if you have an English accent.

I have learned many things.

To stay off the moors.

To keep spare batteries with any torch.

Not to holiday in wood-bound cabins.

To avoid cellars with earthen floors.

Never to read anything backwards. Escpecially if in latin, or if facing a mirror, or if there is lightning outside.

How to ignite deodourant and fry snakes.

That, if a man is hit by an arrow you should either snap it off at the head or push it through him, but never pull it out.

LOTR was very pretty and deserved all the arty oscars. Visually, and aurally, it was stunning.

But Best Picture? No. It was over-long, sometimes plodding, and too fight heavy. At the risk of being shot down, was there that much of story?

In comparison to the Godfather, or - hell - even Titanic, where were the plot twists and turns that make it an epic?

Zenith is, in my view, the best story ever to appear in 2000ad. Especially Phases I and III.

I have the Titan books - they are the only 2K GNs I have ever bought where I already owned the original progs.

I have noticed a disturbing trend.

If I'm bidding I tend to whap in my max amount and if I lose then c'est la vie. I don't go on the net much at home and if something is coming to an end then I would prefer to put in a bid and be out-bid rather than miss out (I learned this lesson after losing out on every issue of Lawman of the Future for 1p!).

I am used to being outbid at the last minute, when someone comes in with a hige bid and you lose. That's fair enough. However, in the last four transactions I have lost I have receoved a second chance offer a nano-second after the auction ends.

This suggests to me that the seller is bidding against me, winning the auction and then coming back to me asking me to pay my maximum price. For example, I bid on a rare CD (a Dogs D'Amour album in anyone cares). My winning bid was ?7.50, my max bid was ?25. I was out-bid at the last minute by someone bidding ?30 and then offered, within seconds of the auction ending, the chance to buy the CD for ?30!

I replied that I would buy it, but because the winning bidder's sale had "fallen through" then I was willing only to pay what the price would have been but for that bid. I got a load of abuse in reply.

I've toyed with the idea of doing something in Scotland, but worry that I might be a gooseberry. At least on the net there is the comfort of anonymity/ anonymityu/ no one knowing who you are.

What I want to know is, given the terrible age we live in - with terrorism, murder, cannibalism, poverty, unemployment, drug pushing and so on - what crime is so great that people in every city have joined to hunt down one man?

Who is William Posters?
What has he done?
Why must he be prosecuted?

Off Topic / Re: I am the Law - Jury Service......

Solicitors are not allowed on juries. Check the papers if you ever get them - blanket prohibition, from qualification to death.

The reasons? (And this is not a joke) We know what is going on (in theory at least) and might therefore:-

(a) be able to establish innocence or otherwise;
(b) be able to see through prosection/ defence tricks;
(c) be able to influence the jury accordingly.

Of course, some might think that in a civilzed society these are useful traits for someone on a jury. But there you go.
