Title: My Awesome Millennium Falcon Build Thread!
Post by: hippynumber1 on 08 February, 2015, 05:47:41 PM
Alright already! Due to popular demand here's a brand spanking new thread dedicated solely to my feeble attempt to build the most expensive model I've ever bought.  I'd like to say straight off that I am a loooooong way off from being a modeller of anything other than amateur status (the hardest model, and the last thing I built, was the pod-racer from The Phantom Menace way back in 2000) so you will be witness to tears at some point I'm sure.

I will update the thread on a monthly basis (although the mag is weekly, as a subscriber I will receive a package containing 4 issues every month) as soon as I've build what I can and, next month, I will also include pics of the subscriber free gifts.  So, here we go and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have...

3:  Upper turret and quad cannon (I will be 'weathering' the cannon at a later date)

Looking good Mark.

So, how many parts is this - same as the Dredd collection, or more?
And did these pieces required any 'assembly'? I'm thinking minute, and fiddly, and easily lost, screws...?

But yes, keen to see this build progress. It'll certainly be summat else once completed.

Post by: hippynumber1 on 08 February, 2015, 06:28:25 PM
It's 100 issues, so it's a 2 year build - works out to about £36/month which I'm lucky enough to be able to easily afford (and as I don't smoke and only drink once a month I don't think I'll miss it either)

Assembly wise it a variety of things - no glueing involved yet (but it will come), some pieces just snap into place and the rest are screwed into place (all of the metal framework is screws). I did mean to include a picture of one of the screws on my fingertip for scale because they are tiny bastards! Luckily, the  screwdriver that came with #2 is magnetic!

Oh good Grud no!  The most I will be doing is 'weathering' the metal pieces as they don't come pre-painted and maybe some dry brushing in places to highlight scorch marks etc. I am an enthusiastic amateur at best, I don't want to ruin it...

On the cockpit seating everyone seems to be going for the 'dirt ingrained in the crevices' look but, in my experience, it's the raised parts of leather seats that lose their colour and wear thin. With that in mind I've tried to dry brush the seats in grey so they look worn and grubby (photo 1). Then I've used a dark brown in the crevices to lift the wear and used a very light touch silver dry brush to give highlights (photo 2). Given that this is my first ever 'proper' model I'm quite pleased with the result!

Wookie fur is very loose so you may want to stipple the co-pilot seat with fur. You know, for authenticity. :)

Hope its okay to post this here?  I am a HUGE fan of the Millennium Falcon, one of the greatest ship designs ever.  I really wanted to subscribe to the part works but my cheapness would not allow me to (I am greatly envious of you, sir).  To make up for my skin-flint ways, I bought a 'Hasbro Hero' Falcon from Argos and, in my spare time have been kit bashing / scratch building it. I've never tried doing something like this before but am having a lot of fun learning. Its not finished yet, but this is how my version is looking right now:

I look forward to seeing how yours turns out, Earthlet!

I'm a keen modelmaker and was told about the Hasbro toy just the other day by a fellow modelmaking friend of mine over on Facebook. Made with action figures in mind, previous Falcon toys have been over-sized, out of proportion, and lacking in detail but apparently the one you're doing up (really nicely, I might add) is pretty darn close to the proportions and detail of the actual studio miniatures.

As I understand it, unlike the DeAgostini weekly build the Hasbro toy lacks an interior and needs a few alterations and scratch-built replacements, but still, not bad for a £30 toy!

For Christmas last year, the red-clobbered, jolly old bearded one bought me the 1/72 scale Millennium Falcon by Fine Molds. A truly impressive kit, I'm still tempted to get myself a Hasbro toy though, with the intention of turning it into the Star Wars Episode VII version.

Upper passageway (after) - judging by the number of dinks, notches and holes I'd say there is more to come for this...

A little bit of modification was required on the seating area.  According to the official build the seating area should look like this:

(Each of those little cushions had to be glued into place individually by the way!)

Now, anybody paying attention knows that the seating in the Falcon doesn't go all of the way round (those last few back cushions haven't got any support!) so I left the last three off and had to cut to shape, fill, sand and paint the last one so the back ran to the end of the support! I think that makes sense...

Excellent attention to detail there hippynumber1, but an odd call for the publisher. Maybe they're working off the YT-1300 factory blueprints, rather than the 'special modifications' version... Still, now you can feel you're really following in the footsteps of a Correlian scoundrel!

Finally got up-to-date last night, just in time for the next set of parts to drop through the letterbox! The work was all on the main hold which now needs one more wall (next issue) to complete...

1 & 2: Seating, bunk and Dejarik table now fitted. I had to sand the end of the bunk slightly, hence the bright white, but I have weathered it down since...

Jez but its as close as any of us are gonna get.

I love living my life through hippynumber1. At play time when all the cool kids pretend to be Optimus Prime, or Capt'n America I always get dibs on hippynumber1* and go look at my cool art and model Millenium Falcon while they all play Avengers and what not.

*Well okay sometimes I play Ming and build cool 2000ad lego things, but mainly hippynumber1

Can you make that life size?

This brings me back to my younger years.

I had older model kit for the Milllenium Falcon as well, and had put most of it together and have it in the house some where stored away in box. Some parts of it may have got lost or broken. I got a lot of help from my father doing this and the back section, the propulsion  section lights up or it did.

I'm going there now...

Taking a break from corridors and arches, it's time to do some work on the underside port recess:

Bits and pieces

Underside port recess complete

Matt black base coat

Light grey matt highlights (dry brushed)

I love copper pipes! I have no idea why, I just think they look fantastic! Copper is an element, so there's no reason why the Falcon shouldn't have them! And I'll wrestle anyone who says otherwise...

Finished with dry brushed rust effect - subtle but effective.

This is the first part that has needed to be painted, the rest is stuff that I have decided to 'enhance'. The paints aren't part of the deal unfortunately but wouldn't have cost much if I'd followed the instructions in the magazine (which suggested using only two colours)

That's a lot of money in one hit! I find the drip feed of parts gives me chance to keep up with just an hour here or there when I've got the spare time. That said, go for it! It's an incredible kit and I still can't quite get my head around how HUGE this thing is going to be!

For me, I want it all in one go.  It'll cost the same, but I can then work at my own pace.  The hugeness, and the pics you've been posting of just how detailed it is, is what makes me raise an eyebrow!  Plus, get it all in one kit, and it's way easier to fit a lighting kit to add that wee bit extra sparkle! ;)

I've never sat down and gone through the 4 packs in one sitting, I try to limit myself to one a week to make it last the whole month so I don't end up drumming my fingers impatiently and tutting at the postie! I would guess though that you'd get a good couple of hours out of it sometimes longer if you're painting and/or modifying as you go along as I am.

This weekend I have built and test fitted the access corridor to the upper and lower quad cannons. An interesting thing to note here is that in Star Wars this corridor doesn't exist - Han and Luke simply step on to the ladder from the main corridor ring. By the time Lucas got to making 'Empire' however enough people had pointed out that the filmed interior did not match (and therefore could not fit) the filmed exterior. What we get thereafter are revisions such as this short, kinked corridor and the ramp up from the main corridor ring to the cockpit access corridor.

Yup! It's that time of the week again! Today was mostly spent screwing and then I worked on my model (boom boom tish)! So, another 'slice' of the underside hull metal framework has been added; it is now so heavy that if left unsupported it will warp. What we have to prevent that happening is a segmented light plastic support jig for it to sit in when not being worked on - this has necessitated me annexing one whole work surface in the kitchen!

The latest of the five (so far) radial ribs that support the metal frame.

Caught up again this weekend, just in time for the early delivery of the next four issues, now I'm behind again! First is the last of the internal corridors coming off the main hold and, I think, the last of the interior corridors to be built!

Knowing how many of us are living vicariously through you, not only is this tardiness showing a lack of veil, its also showing a shocking lack of concern for those of us who can't master greatness the way you have...

Two more 'slices' of the metal lower hull framework done today, that six plates, 2 radial ribs 2 braces and a helluva lotta tiny screws! Not very interesting to look at, I know, but I believe we're building to something very special - I'm collecting lots of bits that I'm being told specifically 'DO NOT DO THIS BIT YET!' so we'll see...

On a separate note, is it possible to post videos on here? If you know if/how please could you PM me with instructions? Ta! Xx

Five sixths of the metal framework for the lower hull now complete (apparently) and test fitting of something called 'thrust vector plates'. I could glue these down now but there is an optional paint-job that I will be attempting later on for added authenticity.

I forget how tiny these pieces are until you include a hand in the shot and then they do look awfully fiddly!

There are many electrical parts involved but I'm not telling you what they do until the big reveal...  ;) I can tell you that the cockpit lights-up, that was done fairly early on, and there are at least 3 other areas that have lights and one area that has a motor (I'm sure you can work that bit out for yourself!)

I got one of those sheet metal X wing models for Christmas and just wasted an hour on it before giving up.

The concept is great and if it was three times the size and in cardboard, I am sure it would make a fine model.

But this is just too fiddly and delicate. The parts are tiny and just about impossible to fold correctly with adult fingers and middle aged (or am I old aged now?) eyesight and my best glasses. Worse, if you don't get it right first time and have to re bend, the pieces can break.

All in all, a massive disappointment to this sauropod.

You've probably said earlier on, but did you paint the whole thing or was it just a wash? Looks perfect in any case, and the colour on the panels is a must and really brings it alive.

Hi Mikey.

On the underside, the only parts I've painted (so far) are the red and grey panels; the body of the thing is already that dirty light grey you see in the pictures. I guess this is why they say the painting is 'optional'; it really would look pretty good without the modifications I'm doing. Not being anything like a pro modeller I'm only going for a very light modification with brushes; the intructions we're being provided are for the really top-notch guys with air-brushes etc and involves a complete respray of the hull in a base colour and then layering on top of that.

Okay, this is almost the last of the faffing about on the underside. The painted panels needed roughing up a touch so I've had at them with my tool! I've put a couple of before and after pictures so you can see what I've done. I also needed to add the final touches of darker rust and a lighter grey and a light orange wash in spots to suggest more wear and tear. All of the guidelines for these stages are for an airbrush (which I can't afford) so I'm improvising with brushes and cocktail sticks and bits of rag etc to get different effects. I'm quite pleased with the finished effect although I don't think the final three close-ups do it justice - it looks much better to the naked eye...

Initially, I was terrified because I was trying to get everything accurate to the reference photos. As soon as I realised that it was never going to happen, I loosened up a bit and decided to go for the impression of the screen version, if you know what I mean? This is going to be a version of the Falcon at 'some point in its history' and so impossible to mess-up. I've even made a couple of mistakes that have turned-out better than what I was trying to do!  ;)

The instructions only make up a small component of each issue, Colin.

The rest of the stuff is essentially filler - they'll pick a planet/vehicle from the SW universe and natter on about it for a few pages (par for the course with these partwork projects).

It's just hit the newsagents here in Oz - I've just made a start on it myself!  A year behind the UK.

Being seeing this advertised on television.

Build the Millinium-Falcon.com (http://www.buildmillenniumfalcon.com/)

It's so tempting and yet so dumb of me to even consider this one. I had started on the new Dr Who books that are being sold the same way.

You pay less then ten dollars for the first and about 25 dollars for the subsequent ones afterward. I've been suckered into these before.

I was buying up those How to Build a Robot magazine when I had to stop due to financial troubles. Like I was also buying up the Star Wars magazine at the same time and I eventually to give that one up. The former one, I mentioned was based on the series hosted the guy who is Lister from Red Dwarf. You know, Robot Wars :)

Krakajac is right; half of the mag is essentially filler. There's a section on a different ship each week, a section on a planet (or part thereof), one on some technobabble and then the instructions. First pic is for Colin_YNWA.

Mind this thread is worth the 800 on its todd so the fact that I'm not sure I need to have a magazine telling me all about sensory arrays is academic (you have to admire the depth they seem to be going to!)

Oh for fuck's sake! Why can't they leave anything alone? I was just about to add some more pics and imgur (the photo sharing site I use) has changed everything! I can no longer embed photos from there in to messageboards (or if I can, I can't figure out how.) Any recommendations on other sites? Photobucket any good?

Sadly not, they're called the 'thrust vector plates' (I looked it up in the instructions.) This is them finished off:

The above statement is a complete lie!
I've been in Germany since Tuesday (watching Spurs get spanked by Dortmund) and have only been hope a couple of hours.
Had a package that I just opened, thinking it was part of the build a Millenium Falcon and it turns out it is indeed the first 2 issues of the build an R2-D2. And yes, they are indeed free  :D

I managed to get my hands on my old model Millienium-Falcon that had ben given to me when I was much younger. This was because the two identical bookcases that had been left in such a way as to be very hard to move.(Despite the fact that I had no trouble moving them myself once they had been shifted out here & this was up the external stairway.)

They were in a tight spot, & this was right in front of the large metal cabinent where it was left piled on top with some old table top board games. This time, there was a ladder in front of it. SO, I could just climb up that thing & slip it out from under the other stuff.

The box felt remarkably light & I was surprised to find that lot of the old model was largely unglued together and most of it still the plastic farm....I think they call it flash. That stuff you have to cut away when you separate the important parts from this part. We really did work on the bottom side of the classic ship. Just assembling the landing gear & some how attaching those to their right full position on the underside. I think they move too.

I hope all the parts are still there. Not sure if father was subtly trying to stop me from taking it with how the twin book cases were arranged infront of the cabinent. He didn't otherwise try to stop me, but I still think there may be some sedimentality there. Who knows.

I put the box in the other room, I will get it later to have another closer look at tit & to tell you's what type of model/version this of the Han's ship. Yeah, it does say that on the box that this is Han Solo's ship if that is anything to go by.

That's Frame instead of Farm. Makes more sense that way, if your familiar with plastic modelling kits that had almost every single piece (Mostly the small pieces) connected by Flash (Something that often remains with the piece after you cut it apart from the Frame (That's what I call it!) and you need to cut it again to remove it or file it down very carefully not to damage it's
shape or even the surface of the piece.

Anyway, I had another look inside the kit box and every piece seems to be there except for the essential electronics that would allow it to make light around the back. Not sure if it made noises either and the cockpit chair where Han & Chewie are sitting. Both the little figures are missing their arms. Like why would they not just have the figures fully intact. It's not like they were mean to pose-able. I couldn't locate the arms anywhere and there is another figure who just has to be Luke on one of those fancy turreted guns. Here he is just seen sitting on a chair suspended by a wall like armature connected to the frame of the circular, segmented window underneath. There is a another circular piece. With the chair & gun glued fully intact. This ones unmanned or should have Han been glued into that one while Chewie flew the ship alone. (There is a allusion to this in that film The Force Awakens when Chewie rescues that Rey girl! Well, I think there is!)

Now is it right that with Luke's chair piece. (BTW I found the turret gun that was connected to this piece. It was need to some de-construction reglueing before that piece can be working properly again!)
or circular canopy is underneath him. While on the other one, the chair is facing it directly.

Is this correct?

I know this model so far hasn't been done properly. Excess glue can be seen every where on model where it's been constructed so far. The little figures look terrible. Still covered in a lot of excess glue. The arms on Luke seen to be placed the wrong way.

The front leg/landing gear of the ship had been broken off it's mount. I think it can be fixed though. As I wrote earlier......it's only the arms of both pilot/co-pilot that are apparently missing.

I'll have pictures up later if I can get my HD Camera working in that way.....but later.

Follow this link to find out more about his older model (https://www.google.com.au/search?site=&source=hp&q=hand+solo%27s+millineium+falcon+-+mpc+model+kit&btnK=Google+Search)

I would include pictures from that page, but my internet is being so mean to me right now, none of those will open.

Back with more later....

According to what I've seen written on the lid. This was boxed in 1979, (Perhaps?) ...Because that's the number written next to Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation on the bottom right hand side of the box-front underneath the painting of the ship. I take better photos later when I fell like it. Showing how badly put together these models were if they were none done so properly.

If you look closely, the Judge Dredd figure is underneath all those other pieces in the last photo. The lippy looks like it's faded now.

I don't want to hi-jack my own thread to push it (other people are happy to attempt hi-jacks, it seems) but, to be honest, nobody really seems that interested. Wrong crowd, I suppose...

Up to issue 13 here in Oz.  Have finished the cockpit (even had a go at fibre optic lighting for the first time) and have spent a silly amount of time coming up with a base-coat I'm happy with.  Will make a start on the cargo hold in due course.  Don't want to hijack your thread, hippynumber1 - but here's my cockpit.

Also ordered a couple of pieces from shapeways to enhance the cargo hold.  Rather expensive though.

Your build is looking good.

I've streamlined a little for this post - there is some mirroring of parts so have focused mainly on the left side (which has slightly more detail) and shown the right only where there is a difference. I have also only shown the added part in each picture rather than a before and after for each piece.

I was wondering which dish it would have (just picturing Han and Chewie subscribing to Sky + now!)  Wonder if it will end up having interchangeable dishes?  Are there any other differences in the Falcon between old and new trilogies?

Some pretty big changes to the main hold/rec room, with the addition of a second bunk opposite the port door.

This is supposed to be a replica of the model used in 'The Empire Strikes Back' so the round dish was a given (no plans to provide the oblong dish from 'The Force Awakes' as far as I'm aware) and it will have five landing struts as opposed to the three shown in 'A New Hope'.

Wow - I first saw both ANH and TESB over thirty years ago and I've never noticed there were more landing struts in the latter film.  Then again, I didn't notice that the radar got swiped off until TFA, so I'm obviously not very observant when it comes to watching high-speed spaceships in films (real life I'm better at).

I take it mandible is whatever one else has always refered to the 'sticky out front bits' of the The Falcon. I've never heard them referred to as such but it is of course a perfect description.

Not only is this thread one of the great things known to the internet its also very educational.

I've learnt so much, who knew the front sticky out bits of the Millennium Falcon were refered to as 'mandibles'? Now I learnt that that the bottom shootie bit is called the ventral gun-well... though I'm almost sure one of those words is made up!

That's coming along nicely.
Are you getting the R2-D2 one that is coming out on the 4th of Jan?
I've subscribed to that too but I think I might build that one as it goes long as I don't think I have room for all the Millenium Falcon parts and the R2-D2 parts sitting around in boxes.
I will definitely be using this thread in a years time to build my Falcon

Those engines are a bit good - I got the Falcon kit that came out around RotJ time, and the engines were a few weak lights surrounded with some white paper to try to brighten them up a bit - not a patch on the 21st century version!

Because you demanded it: here's the Edwardian drinks' tray I bought (for a pittance, I might add) specifically for working on the fiddlier sections of the falcon. High sides and nice handles meant that no tiny parts could roll away unnoticed and I could carry it easier than one without handles! Sorry it isn't a table...

No, no the fact that its a victorian tray makes it all the finer. You've managed to further romanticise the whole endeavour a little more.

Oh so practical as well!

It's lovely isn't it?

I saw a couple of issues of the Back to the Future Delorian in the W H Smiths today (I thought it had been out for a good while. Maybe the earlier one was a try-out or something). If the photograph on the back was accurate, part of me really yearned to get them, but I can't afford them right now. (Well I could just about afford the first issue, but what's the point of that?)

Sorry slightly off-topic, but not entirely unrelated. This sort of thing, classic space ships and vehicles is far more up my street than the old airfix plane type stuff, although they're nice too.

Anyway, your effort, hard work and diligence does you credit hippynumber1*, especially going that extra mile with the paint jobs and extra battle damage etc. I'm not sure I'd have the patience or skill for that, although I'd probably manage the basic assembly. Assuming the instructions are up to scatch.

(I'm curious how the finished craft looks like without the optional paint job. A side-by-side comparison of pictures would be interesting. I'm not suggesting you do that.)

I really look forward to seeing the final shots.

*Dear me that looks patronising, but I don't mean it that way. You've done a wonderful job.

There are a few people who have done the basic job on it, I'll see if I can do a side-by-side comparison at the end. I've been learning this (paint-job, battle damage, etc) as I've been going along so really appreciate the compliment; it wasn't patronising at all. I feel very proud of what I've achieved with the old hunk of junk.

1:43 scale apparently; there are a few places producing IP infringing figures on 3D printers but they're stupidly expensive (and, unless something's officially licensed, I'm not interested.)

Pretty much bang on for Galactic Heroes range.

More seriously, I'm sure there were rather nice die-cast figures in this rough scale in the 80's - I think I may even have the Vader somewhere. They're about twice the height of the old Kenner Micro Collection playset figures.

This is interesting; as the build has been progressing people have been highlighting details on the original filming prop that have been missed by the manufacturers of this model. This has just been posted on the build forum:

Dear Participants to this thread,

De Agostini would like to again thank you for your patience in this matter.

In light of the extra greeblies highlighted after the first set was brought to our attention, we can now confirm that we will be providing all but the very last greeble, the one which is highlighted but not arrowed.

We are now in discussions with the manufacturer as to what the production time will be on these pieces and will update in due course. We understand that it can be frustrating having to wait for the final details, and we are doing our utmost to expedite this process.

Once the parts are manufactured, we will send them out in a special pack, not issue, which will of course be free of charge to all participants in the build. Details will follow once the packs have been put together.

Regards,

De Agostini Admin

Word is that the wings are motorised, that R2 is removeable and rotates when in the socket, the landing legs are retractable and the cockpit is fully lit. And it's huge!

magnetic screwdriver is your answer - I always had trouble with fiddly screws until I got one of these (or actually until a friend just magnetised a normal one) - pop the screw on the head and insert with the screwdriver
Title: Re: My Awesome Millennium Falcon Build Thread!
Post by: Mardroid on 16 March, 2017, 01:14:17 AM
If you tap the screwdriver against something hard (not someone's head) it will cause the screwdriver to become magnetised. I think its just for a temporary period, and it's pretty weak but it may work long enough to tighten the screws into place.

I used the magnetism trick to get screws out of awkward places, like the inside of a computer chassis. In hindsight, considering the issues of exposing microchip components to an electric field,.that probably wasn't a good idea. Thankfully there was no harm done.

Thankfully they supply a magnetic screwdriver with the second issue and it helps enormously but it's still incredibly fiddly.

Once you're past all the bloody door cushions it's great!

I've done one set. Glued my fingers together far too many times
I have the second, of many, to do today.

During a spare bedroom clear out, I found a 3/4 complete old AMT Millennium Falcon cutaway kit that I'd started building with the elder Tips son many years ago*

Man, it looks shit compared to the gorgeousness on this thread.

* This is what happens when you leave it to your Mrs to go out and get a Millennium Falcon TOY for a seven year old.  She comes back with a madly complicated kit that he just didn't have the patience to do.

"We've painted this bit. Now we need to let it dry."

In retrospect, I should have a) taken it back or b) said "Sod it, let's just glue it together as quick as we can and then throw it about the room".

In good news, we also found a LEGO MINDSTORMS DARKSIDE DEVELOPER KIT (AT/AT and Destroyer Droid).  Those are going for crazy money on eBay!

Finished up issue 25 today. More door cushions, frame and corridors. Don't mind the corridors but did not notice for ages that arches with cushions had to go in one way and one way only!
Glad I did not glue them!
Getting hand cramps now from all the fiddly screws so that's my lot until tomorrow.

Hey, hey hey. The Falcon isn't even cold, hell the old girl still has some tricks to come I hope and already you tease us with this new beauty.

It seems as though this is only a test run at the moment, Colin. If it's popular/successful enough then it will probably launch sometime in 2018 (annoyingly overlapping with the R2-D2 build.) The Falcon is now all about getting all the tiny rust and wear details on. I'm also waiting for a bespoke bracket to be made so I can display it in the way I want so you've a few more months of Falcon to go.

My main worry at the moment is we're moving house in three weeks and I am absolutely terrified about moving it. My plan is to pad out the boot of the car with blankets and a duvet, snuggle the Falcon into place, put as much bubble-wrap as I can find on top and drive very, very slowly to the new house...

From the look of the size of it, Hippy you'd be better of climbing in and flying there...

This, my lovelies, is it - the finishing touches: the side panels all weathered and 'distressed.' The pictures start at the port rear panel and work around to starboard rear. I want to get this bracketed and on display properly for the final pictures so there may be a delay while I wait for the bracket to be made. We're moving house tomorrow too, so it's entirely possible that two years worth of modelling could get wrecked...

Look wait WAIT - I'll be over. I'll look after while you move. In a box. We'll lock ourselves (me and the Falcon) in a secure metal box unitil you are done then we can fly it - safely - to your new homw together.

That is random; it finished in January! Just noticed how photobucket have wrecked the thread - utter bastards - but there was no way I was paying for it! I received issue 100A this week which includes the free lies that were overlooked in the initial build so when they're done I shall upload some fresh pics that you fine folk can actually see!
