No doubt other people have thought the same thing but I've been thinking for a while that maybe the Dredd title put some people off going to see it at the cinema (amongst maybe a few other things) as they associated it with the Stallone film?
Not that I'm suggesting tricking people going into see any potential future film but I think MC1's a great title for a movie anyway. Yes I know there's the 'tiny' thing about budget but if a film was advertised to people as a story about the inhabitants and goings on in this vast city instead of just being about Dredd it could draw a lot more people.

So you think that removing all reference to the main character will ensure that a sequel does better?
I think that is the opposite of a genius idea.
Well if your idea is such genius how come it bombed at the box office? I'd prefer it called Judge Dredd but both films haven't exactly done well at the box office have they.
And in many ways the actual city is just as much of a character as Dredd.
You did post that few years ago? Why bring it up again?
Dredd is the Mega-City 1 Lawman!

Someone else must have posted the same thing then as I've never posted anything about it before.
MEGA CITY 1 or MC1, I'm already confused. Is it a boy band?
No, I'm in complete agreement. These large-cast police procedurals are all the rage, and the science-fiction hook may hoik it out of the crowd and get it noticed. Dredd could still be the "main character", much like wotsisname in the CSI franchise, but surrounded by more human judges may make him more palatable to the audience. A Netflix (type) series could allow for proper development and multiple plots to further grab the viewer.
If they insist of spinning it out of the movie, why not call it 'MC1: Sector 13' and dunk it in a healthy bath of cynical pisstaking of exactly those type of procedurals it pretends to be? Who knows, it might then lead to multiple spin-offs ('MC1: Psi Division', 'MC1: The Low Life' etc) and an eventual blanket presence in that section of the EPG I usually flick straight past on my way towards Babestation and its naughty brethren.
SBT
Nobody in their right mind would begin adapting Judge Dredd for film or TV by ensuring that the character is hidden firmly in the background. It would be commercial suicide.
Particularly after the recent film threw itself on the barbed wire, made people realise a Dredd film COULD work and paved the way for a future iteration to do much better business.
Yes, it was done with Gotham, and to a lesser extent Smallville, but Batman and Superman are household names.
If another live action Dredd project ever does get of the ground again, I imagine it will be very heavily trading on the good will of the 2012 film and the appetite for a sequel, and not trying to sneak Dredd in through the back door in a Futuristic Heavy Armoured Cop Film.
Yeah, I think it could work. After all, it's just the title. 'Mega City' would perhaps allow us broader scope, negating the need to be so focused on one somewhat intractable fella. There's loads of films where the main character is not in a bunch of scenes, and they don't suffer for it, quite the opposite, they benefit from having MULTIPLE well rounded characters, rather than just one geezer who isn't very likable (and nor should he be) carving notches on his lawgiver for 90 minutes......
Base it on a sit-com format and call it Judge Dredd And Friendz, complete with plinky pop/punk theme tune from some no note band.
Throw in some ill-judged canned laughter and a mainstream, U.S television audience might just go for it!

Yes I think a boy band type title would be really effective. Something like MC1 Crew or Mega City Boyz.

That's it. Dredd could be in it but I think it's a way to introduce the character to many more people. Maybe people who wouldn't go to see a Dredd film otherwise but like the sound of a big sci fi blockbuster.
Obviously I'm not the first person to think of this as Goaty points out. It was the only real title I could think of that would be Dredd based but not include Dredd in the title
For a Netflix or HBO series, maybe. For a film? No way.

Why not call the film - Earth! And then you could have all the mega cities in it with all the judges.

I don't know if you're joking or not but MC1 does have er some (a lot) relation to Dredd whilst Earth, why that could be to do with anything.
By the way, we discussed this ages ago when I showed a mock up title for this very series.
Also, Karl said after his last TV series that he wouldn't do another one, mainly due to the way it affected his family life. Then again, never say never, before anyone else does ;)

Recent big budget sci-fi flops like Edge of Tomorrow and Jupiter Ascending suggest that this is definitely not the case.

But you were arguing that the title reminding people of Judge Dredd was what kept them away. The title EARTH wouldn't remind people of Judge Dredd at all, so that would be a good thing.
MEGA-CITY ONE is certainly a fantastically vague title, which doesn't really remind you of anything except rubbish channel 5 shows about large scale engineering projects, but if you're making something about Judge Dredd and don't want to remind anyone of Judge Dredd, then HEAVY ARMORED SPECIAL COP (http://www.figures.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=187812&d=1399486477) is the way to go every time.
And the sequel to the sequel could be called Mega City 2!

Seeing we're trying to be ambiguous, or reluctant to call it Dredd, I'd call it "The dude playin' a dude, disguised as another dude." That'll throw them off the scent.
Just plain old Dredd 2 will do me.
Fargo 2
Won't calling it DREDD 2 Confuse people, as they've already seen (or not, as the case seems to be) DREDD 3D. They'll wonder what's going on
So we call it Dredd 4D? Or Dredd 3E?
I think we should call it Simon.
Actually -
Call it Judge Anderson , Psi Division instead.......
Opening episode could bring us up to her sitting in the interview room/ her first scene in DREDD.
As she's past being a rookie by the end of the film, her story ark would then continue after the events in DREDD, and would easily allow coverage all of the Dredd World/ Mega City scenarios (including The Dark Judges....)
Urban/ Dredd could make random guest appearances to add spice and link some canon to the story, and a strong female lead like Anderson would be welcome.
( yeh, I read these threads !!)
Within the context of one disaster and one patrial wIn as far as Dredd films go, ABC maybe not too far off the measure. Judge Dredd is patently more interesting as a world as opposed to a singular personage. Give a ministries set in an all the other realisable future a chance and see how it plays out. Z

What I'm talking about is a title that is Dredd related but doesn't have Dredd in the title like the other 2 films. When many people see it they won't automatically associate it with Dredd (the people who have heard of Judge Dredd but wouldn't go out of their way to see a Judge Dredd based film.

There's no guarantees with these things unless it's something like Star Wars. Both Dredd films didn't do very well at the box office anyway even if Dredd found a bit of a market on dvd.
Well I can't wait for the trailer, so that the complaining can begin
That is a good idea actually a film about a city - they could do with with time lapse filming so you can just see all the cars going past fast and stuff.

Maybe the city could come to life and have emotions, like in Ghostbusters 2 or Les Amants du Pont-Neuf.
The female lead would be a kooky young career girl (Zooey/SJP) who's all alone in a new city, trying to make it in a desirable profession despite a mean boss who doesn't appreciate her. She dates a series of men but ultimately realises that her real love is the city. The girl and the city

Think Andy Warhol did this fifty years ago. Although he did cut out all the exciting bits with cars: Empire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sSsWj2HWk0) (state of mind.)

If you're going to post bombastic
Carly Simon vidjos set in New York city you can't ignore this masterpiece (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW8UnXzP3ms)
If you had small hair in the 80s you were SCUM!
I know everyone and their whippet has one of these (even Shaun the Sheep and Wallace and Gromit share a universe!) but how about an 'equal' instead of a sequel? Don't name it after Dredd - introduce a new-ish player. Call it Chopper, or or Anderson or what have you, have JD appear in there for a bit as antagonist or supporting character, but emphasise the world-building aspect. Avoids the stink of past disappointments via a Dredd title, but still offers the same world, the same huge cast of players?

Expecting beautiful women to also be able to dance is unfair.
Well maybe Dredd 2 or something like Dredd Salvation or Genysis could work for dvd (where Dredd found a bit of a market) but it would probably bomb at the cinemas again if Dredd was in the title.
Quoteit would probably bomb at the cinemas again if Dredd was in the title.
Call it
Judge Joe.
If the proposed trilogy had happened, i would bet money that films 2 and 3 would have been called:
Dredd: Origins
Dredd Vs Death
Yeah I think they should make a film about a minor character in the Judge Dredd universe, how about a film about Maria? You could just make it about Judge Dredd's cleaning lady - Rob Schneider could play her.
What would be so good about that is you would not have the stigma of 2 Dredd flops attached to it, and also you would not have to tell an action story. In fact you could tell a slice of life drama. get Pedro Almodovar to direct it!
I think we are onto a winner lads.
Now . . . . . about that funding.
There is no sequel. There is sequel.THERE IS NO SEQUEL! >sob<
