Me too. Although I never did get past that train level and gave up after a while. I intend to dust off the PS2* (or maybe it'll be the PC if I go the emulator route) and have another go, though likely from the beginning. I loved it up until the train level.

Does this mean I might have to consider getting a PS4 in future? Heh.

*Yes I've still got PS2. That's the irritating thing about consoles not being backwardly compatible, and you still have games you like. I e been thinking of getting an emulator so I can play Ps2 games on my PC, but that seems a while lot of rigmarole considering  bios, etc, and my CD-Rom drive has gone wrong...

Not sure about its pacing for a multiplayer experience, but otherwise this still holds up pretty well.  Upgrade to 4K textures and 60fps and this could pass as a modern release.

I'm not so sure,  I felt it was a little clunky at the time of original release. For me, it always played like a gears of war clone.  I did enjoy it though and will reserve judgement until the actual release.  Whether I buy the game for a third time remains to be seen, though I would always try and support anything 2000ad.

Now, a Strontium Dog game would be an instant purchase, as would a dredd game set in the movie universe.

Rogue Trooper came out before Gears of War.  Rebellion take note: if you want your cover-based shooters to be more successful in future, stop putting female characters in them.

They were both released in the same year but rogue did indeed beat gears to it. They must have been in development at the same time.  Very similar game play, but the sheer polish of gears has better weathered the passage of time. Hopefully this update will be a little more than a graphics upgrade.

To be fair Rogue was a previous gen game (PS2/Xbox) and Gears was nextgen (360).

This is very exciting! I have never played the original (hadn't discovered thrill power at the time) so I will get this without a doubt. What kind of multiplayer mode did this game have? It would be great to have a Call of Duty type multiplayer with customizable Genetic Infantrymen and Norts.

I really enjoyed the game too. Very atmospheric in places and the fact that every Nort trooper looks like every other Nort trooper (and ditto the Southers) worked much better in it's favour than the ranks of similar citizens in Dredd vs Death.

My only real gripe with the game was
that it was left open-ended.  All that hard grind and the Traitor General still gets out alive. I suppose they wanted to have something to do in a sequel, but it just made all the slog before it seem pointless.
Jim, i'd forgotten all about that!

I did complete the game on the PS2, and even spent some time working on the multiplayer options with mini-bolt, but for some reason I could never get to grips with the Wii version, and I even got the lightgun accessory to help me pretend I was using Gunnar!

I absolutely adore this game, and have played through it several times, on PC, Xbox, and Wii.  I cannot wait to play it on PS4!

I loved how you could approach each level trying out different gameplay styles - stealth, run and gun, etc.  The different things to use were great - Gunnar's turret mode, the decoy hologram, the mini mines and so  on.  Just brilliant!  It never got old, and I always found new ways to play.

My favourite version was on the Xbox, just because I found it easier with a controller than a keyboard (though I am well versed in both) - it seemed more fluid somehow.

The Wii version was definitely the worst - some effort had been made to improve the graphics, such as sea and sky effects, but the gameplay was broken by the change to the cover mechanic.  In previous iterations you clicked a button or key to go to cover when next to a wall or bollard or whatever, and click again to come away if I remember correctly.

However, on the Wii version the game tried to guess when you wanted to pop in and out of cover, and tried to do it for you, making it incredibly clumsy and difficult to play, if you loved the cover mechanic as much as I did.  I only made it through the first four levels, and then gave up in disgust, digging out my old Xbox and playing through it on there.

Unfortunately the game is so old on the PC now it is very difficult to get it running properly on newer OS.  It appears to run well at first, but then you get to the 'on rails' (I believe the first is manning the guns on the Choppa?) part and the framerate drops and eventually crashes.  I did find a fix some time ago, and managed to get another couple of playthroughs out of it, but haven't been back to it in a couple of years.

TLDR:  ROGUE TROOPER ON PS4!!!!  WOOOOOO!!!!   :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I remember having this on my battered and now quite dead PS2. (The day it died was very sad. I decided I would send it to heaven to be with my goldfish. But that wasn't the sad part - the sad part was what happened when I'd tried to flush it down the loo. Cost a bloody fortune to fix!)

Anyways - I recall playing the game to completion, because I'm hardcore like that. It was AWESOME.

I know gamers have a tendency to think "I like Game X, I'd love Y to be done in the style of that game".  e.g.  Slaine: Grand Theft Dragon.

But I can't get over what a PERFECT fit, a Rogue Trooper game using Breath of the Wild as a template would be.  Seriously, just about every mechanic in the game could be adapted to a Nu Earth setting.

I mean, the cooking already reminded me of the salvage mechanic from the Rogue Trooper game anyway so it would be simple to turn it back to it's roots.

Instead of starting with the runes on the Sheikah Slate, you start with Bagman, Helm and Gunnar.

The temples would need to switch to be slightly more combat oriented but basically could be Nort pill-boxes that need to be hacked).

The villages could be Fort Nuero, the Gasbah etc.

The Divine Beasts could be gigantic Nort WMD.

etc.

October!! Woohoo! Not long now!

I feel slight trepidation. The cover mechanic has apparently been changed, in that you go to cover intuitively, rather than pressing a key/button to do so (i.e. In the PC and Xbox versions). This intuitive cover mechanic was one of the things that 'broke' the Wii version in my opinion. It snapped me to cover when I was quite happy running and gunning, and it made me run and gun when I desperately needed to go to cover. I sure hope they've improved that!!  Or at least left the original control scheme as an option in the menus.

Looking at the vids it seems like it is the same game as last time. The opening challenge is the same as the original game, is it not?  It looks very familiar.

Is this just going to be the same game (storyline, tasks etc) as the old one spruced up for newer consoles?
Or am I missing something?
Title: Re: Something Rogue Troopery in the offing?

That's why it's Redux - and cheaper than a full-price game.

I would imagine the bulk of the maps/levels are the same.

I did play the original on the ps2, and thoroughly enjoyed it, although I never got beyond the train level.

Strongly tempted to go next gen to get this version*. It's not the only reason, but it's a strong motivator. I use the PS3 at the moment, and while I do like games I don't play them very often. I use it mainly for watching TV via Netflix and the like or watching DVDs/Blu-ray. I got the ps2 mainly for DVD support, and PS3 for blu-ray. * The new consoles have confused my choices as it's the Xbox that comes with the next gen super HD whiz drive... and I'm reticent about Microsoft products.... And the Xbox One X is really expensive! A very impressive machine though.

The Nintendo Switch is a lovely gadget... but I don't find the games appealing for some reason.

* So why didn't I get just a dedicated player of either? Well, back when I bought the first gen ps2 DVD players were much more expensive, and the console was a pretty reasonable alternative. This wasn't so much the case when I got the PS3 as I got it pretty late plumping for the super slim version. I think t here were cheaper blu-ray players by then, but the PS3 was still great value with the added capabilities. And I like the fact I can game when I want to.

Just something I'll lob in here:

I'm actually doing something right now to do with video games that could very well turn into full blown work of the 'it pays money' variety. During the course of it, I've been learning a lot about the foibles of optical media based game consoles.

Given how affordable DVD and Blu Ray players are now, you might want to make sure you've got one and use that in preference to chucking your movies through a console - ESPECIALLY the PS3, as those are now no longer being manufactured.

The reason I say this is because optical drives are notorious for breaking down after extended use, and Sony's are particularly difficult to replace, given that new units have to be sourced for your specific model. Even within one model line (for example, the PS3 ultra slim) there are numerous hardware revisions. Things get complicated REALLY quickly with those.

Watching movies on your PS3, or PS4, might be convenient. But if you do it a lot, you'll increase wear and tear on the laser, and that could put paid to your gaming a ways down the line. Sooner than you think, maybe.

Hmm. Thanks, food for thought. I do tend to go long periods of time without watching a DVD / Blu-ray (but I do it far more frequently than gaming), nowadays particularly since using Netflix, but then I might use it a lot in one go (like if I recently bought a box set, etc).

The PS2 actually stood me in pretty good stead, back when I watched DVDs far more often, but although it was prone to skipping with certain disks. I'm not sure if that was the PS2 or the DVDs however. (I suspect it was a bit of both. I. E. There was a weakness on the DVD which the PS2 picked up on, since  it coped with most just fine. But playing the same disk through my parents DVD player often didn't result in the same issues,  as if the player could cope somehow.)
