Original, stand alone Dredd GN.
« on: 04 December, 2016, 02:15:33 pm »
I wonder if Rebellion would consider commissioning a Judge Dredd story seperate from the weekly, collected in graphic novel form, not unlike the evil corporate, capitalists of DC and Marvel do?

Would other fans buy it? I'd certainly be interested in such a project.  :)

Although I freely concede that Dredd has brand recognition, which is a definite plus, the general economics of a standalone OGN are not especially favourable, as I rambled on about here.

As a tie-in to be promoted with something else - like the Ma-Ma prequel - maybe, but 2000AD still needs to fill a 5 page hole every week and the Megazine 10 pages a month, so it makes more financial sense to put them in either of those two established venues, and the plus is it might boost their sales a little. Then of course they'll always be collected for the larger market like the US. The novelty - like the old annuals - is good but is it worth it?

If its not financially viable its a shame as something like this would be very interesting to see. It'd be great to see the format of story stretched in new directions.

Weirdly I think that this is how the normal Waterstones audience look at the current Dredd trades.

I honestly believe 80% of them don't know 2000ad is still being published.
They think they are new originated content.

To be honest? Dark Justice felt like that's what it wanted to be.

Personally? I like to see original paid weekly digital content, to supplement 2000 AD, as being the way to go, latter to be collected in GN format of course.

One thing I find really irritating about Waterstones is that sign they have over the collections/GN section: IT'S NOT COMICS.

Yes. It. Is.

That being said, if it draws in new customers who usually associate comics as being just for kids, I guess that's no bad thing. I'd prefer they didn't misinform to do it though.

Well said that man.

Another thing that's been bugging me there a bloke at the Uni I work at whose done a study about how comic book text books help people retain information better than straight text. Its got loads of coverage which has driven me buggie cos

1. They do that bloody 'Wow comics aren't just superheros thing a lot - I'll get you for that John Humprhries
2. Errrr Will Eisner like almost 70 years. He did instructional manuals in comic form for the US army after finishing The Spirit in the 50s. Now some of that was to do with literacy levels but also it helped get across complex ideas much better than anything else. This ain't news...

Ggggrrrrr it feels like there's still so much to be done for people to get past a stupid cliched image of comics. I mean 1986 and all that was 30 years ago and sometimes I don't think we've progressed....

rant over sorry about that.

'It's Not Comics' ? That's pretty annoying.
And I don't think the ubiquitous  'graphic novel' is ever going to be dropped. Don't mind 'trade paperback', but wish someone would start simply selling 'fat, collected comics'.

If the insubstantial monthly books are referred to as 'floppies', surely the more substantial collections should be 'stiffies'? A really big TPB could be a 'fat stiffy'. What could possibly go wrong?

I can't see any problems there.  A flaw with no plans...
