Title: Dredd busted.
Post by: atp on 01 August, 2014, 03:15:47 PM
I have just started what I hope will be a full size  head and shoulders Dredd bust. Not sure how long this will take, but will just keep going till it's done or my money runs out. So first a base lump of white sculpey that I had lying around was used to support the start of the jaw, which is super sculpey. Built this up over a couple of days, then a trial fit under Dredd's skid lid. The helmet is made from body filler over a pepakura base which I made out of thin plastic sheet instead of paper, never again, it's just too difficult to hold together. I ended up having to wire it together in the end.

Very realistic  :)
Good luck with the helmet, the part that looks so majestic in the comics but often looks a bit weird in, um, "real life".

That's bloody excellent and the snarl showing the teeth reminds me of the way John Burns draws his mouth.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. Probably unnecessary but I should say this is going to be the comic version of old stony face and not from the movie or a `realistic` look. The snarl was a feature that I wanted to add from the start, I also intend to add a few cuts and bruises as I'm looking to give him a hard bad ass bastard look, like he's just warmed up for a day's duty by beating the shit out of a couple perps to get the blood pumping.  So, got a bit more done to the helmet, mainly smoothing it out. I'm using mostly body filler for this and even in a well ventilated room/garage the fumes/smell even with a mask on plays on the lungs, so plenty of breaks needed just to keep breathing. I've also started to add more form to the face and bulk out the neck a bit. A trial fitting of the visor which is pteg formed over a bowling ball is enough to show me that I am going to go with a solid build painted visor so as to stay firmly with the comic book look of Dredd. I can always change back to the tinted transparent visor later if I change my mind. I like to trial paint as I go along so hopefully that will be done soon after a little more sculpting.

Re-worked the visor and got more sculpting done to his face. Started on his collar, which  I also managed to get some paint onto. I was hoping to start a trial paint of the face, but time ran out, will try to get that done over the next couple of days. I am using a hot air stripper to bake the sculpey as I go, takes a while and I have to keep the heat from getting to close or the sculpey blister's and burns, especially as it's fairly thin in some places.

Finally managed to get a spot of paint work done. The colours are much to bright / vivid, but they are OK for this trial run. Once the bust is fully sculpted I shall airbrush on a neutral base coat and then air brush the skin tones. Not really sure from this trial whether I will stick to my original idea of the cuts and bruises yet. While I'm working on the bust I'll see if they fit with what I had in mind. I'm glad that I moved away from the tinted visor in favour of the sculpted one, which definitely fits in with the style of the bust better.

Started on the upper torso of old stony face. For the uniform I'm using a smooth tea towel soaked in fibreglass resin, which is sculpted into folds held in place by pins until dry. Also managed to get a start on the left shoulder pad. Now seemed like a good time for a trial fitting of the badge as well.
Not too long until I can get a start on the eagle. If any of the judge costume owners that frequent this forum could help with some detail picks of said eagle that would be greatly appreciated.

Got some work done on the shoulder pads, the eagle is proving to be a bit of a problem. I'm really just forming body filler as best as possible while it's workable. Once it sets and cools down, I am using rasps and files to persuade it into shape. Trouble is the fumes and dust again, so I've ordered in some clay. When that arrives I'll sculpt the eagle separately and make a mould, then cast it in resin.

Clay arrived and I managed to get an afternoon's sculpting done on the eagle. First I cut off the old eagle and ground most of it away to make way for the clay, while keeping the base for size. I much prefer this version of the eagle compared to my first attempt. The clay is a pleasure to work with, no dust and fumes to worry about and the work flow is much quicker. Normally I always use a clay or sculpey, but I thought given the full size nature of this beast, and with strength in mind I would try shaping body filler directly, never again. When I get some more spare time I'll mould and cast this eagle and fix it back onto the bust.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

Had a good run this time around, managed to mould  the eagle cast it and re-fix it to old stony face. Once that was done I really saw it all coming together.

I must admit I'm  enjoying this sculpt more now that I have stopped trying to force body filler into shape, over all it's faster sculpting in clay then moulding  & casting. I also like the whole tactile element of using clay.

Standing back a taking a fresh look at this bust I have decided that the collar needs to be re-worked, I had originally wanted it partially open. Dredd would no doubt report himself for inappropriate dress conduct, so it's my next area of work.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and am enthusiastic to get this sculpture finished.

Not had a lot of spare time to work on the sculpt for a while, so I was glad to get a couple of hours in to rework the collar and start on the uniform zip.
First I made up each fastener separately, then stuck them to some masking tape for a trial run to see how the zip would look.

Initially I was quite  pleased with it, but something looked off, even though this was a rough trial it just didn't look right.

After looking at different prog covers featuring Dredd I decided to have another go.

Using a simple oblong shape this time, again on tape and trialled, to me it looks better straight away as it represents the comic illustrated look that I'm aiming for.
With that sorted the complete zip and hopefully the chain is my next move.

The only different fastener version that springs to mind is Greg Staples ZigZag Zipper. Try saying that when you've sunk a few beers.

Great work so far, very interesting seeing the 'making of' before the final piece is finished. Love the level of detail you're going to. Do you have a venue in mind for when old stoney face is completed? I'm thinking in the entrance of a shopping centre, or a cinema on the release of Dredd2.

If only that were the case, nope afraid  it's judicial duties in the dining room for old stoney face.

l got to work on the chain, I had considered buying a length of chain from a hardware store or garden supplies but that would be too easy.

For the links I used 4mm acrylic rod, heated with a hot air gun and then bent over a suitably sized drill bit. After burning my fingers and swearing a few times I cut the shaped acrylic into half links.

Next all that needed to be done was to superglue each half and attach Dredd's badge, then see how it looked. I have fixed it in place now.

Looking at this sculpt as it is now I felt that I could see the end in sight, a bit of tidying up and finishing some details, paint and all done, however my gorgeous wife has put a stop to that idea, I'll fill you in after the next lot of pictures.

So what has my babe gone and done, well when I told her that I would make a shelf to stand the bust on, she said a full sized statue would look "wicked" and that I should get a move on with it.

With that she set about ordering more materials. I am bloody blessed. So here goes nothing, to be honest not really sure how I feel about the prospect, but I can't pass on an offer like that.

Only thing is do I continue to post in this thread , or do I start a fresh one. Hope you are all up for the journey.

OK,  I was going to start on the armature for old stoney face's arms, but I found myself with nearly a whole day spare so got some work done on the legs.

I genuinely did not even consider making anything other than a bust when I started this project, but I am enjoying doing this sculpt as it's the first time I have sculpted anything on this scale.
Although I have made a full sized Dalek, which is more of a construction job than a sculpture.

Sorry some of the photo's are a bit blurred, I think it's due to the fluorescent light.

Managed to get a couple of hours to start the arms, went really well. The sculpting seemed to just move along by itself today. Also found that I lost track of time and drifted into a sentimental retrospective  thought pattern that hit me quite hard today. Back in 2007 my wife developed a heart problem that led to a mini stroke in 2010. Mini stroke implies something trivial, but shit scary thing to happen, everything that goes with a full stroke but with good chance of recovery.  Thankfully she had the strength to battle her way back and has recovered fully. During that period I became obsessed with her health and recovery . I know I said that the change from bust to full size was my wife's idea, but it's more than just an idea, after all that happened this whole Dredd sculpt would never have started if not for my wife pushing me to get back into creative things.
Getting all bloody soppy now, not sure how or why that came about, bit self indulgent there, but just felt like I needed to put it into the wind so to speak.

Good choice - it's a very "dreddish" pose, but not too complicated anatomically, and the daystick should give it a bit more strength

Yep totally, the arms would effectively be adding strength to each other, and psychologically Scare the shit out of children, Ahem  excuse me, I mean keep people away from too much touching

This is looking better and better. Hope you're going to make a cast of the finished article, I'd like one in my garden... :)  except of course copyright issues... :(

I would cast this in an instance through the right channels (Rebellion), but the mould alone would cost bucket loads of cash and I wouldn't even know how to estimate the material costs. Then there's shipping. Nice thought though.

KTT ??

Finally got the base structure for the arms done, that just about has everything in place and ready for the full detailing to start.

Looking forward to getting this done now, and with the structure and pose set the end is in sight.
I'm waiting on delivery of materials which I'm hoping will be in 2-3 days.

Still a bit of a pain getting time for this but intend to keep going, waiting for parts to dry has slowed me down a bit, but now I should be able to work on different areas as all the support is now dry.

I had hoped it would be a lot quicker, but not doing anything on this scale before meant a lot of hit and miss during this sculpt which has put me on a learning curve.
From what I have learnt I would definitely make another full size statue again at some point, but would do it differently.

Well and truly pissed off at the moment.
To start off I just want to let you know that  I really appreciate everyone popping into view this thread, so I feel it's only right  to keep you all informed of what's happening with this sculpt at the moment.

Not a lot it seems, until next week.
The delivery of materials that was due last week never arrived. Contacted the supplier and was told delivery would be today, still no delivery. This time Very apologetic suppliers phoned me to let me know that delivery will be next Thursday, got absolute guarantee that it will arrive ??. OKAY, shit sometimes happens, but I'm still pissed that this has happened.

I haven't lost interest or put this on the back boiler, in fact this forced delay has me itching to get back into this sculpture. So, once again I really do appreciate everyone popping into view this thread and I shall post more details ASAP, thanks for your patience.

Materials arrived at last, I am so glad to be able to get back into this sculpt, I would love to sculpt for a living instead of just a hobby.

I managed to get work on the right  boot, and glove pockets detailing. Also started on the boot holster and knee pad as well as blocking in Dredd's belt pouches.

I have found that I'm working on one side and then I will move onto the other side as I work around the sculpture.

Hoping to get the gun and the other halves of the eagle and shoulder pad completed, followed by more detailing. I have decided that as far as the gun is concerned I'm only going to make what can be seen coming out of the holster.

With most of the main bulk of this figure complete I mostly have the details to go. Then I can start to paint.

Test painted the glove pockets, this will be a guide to all green areas.

I roughed out the Holstered lawgiver in clay, then moulded and cast it as I did  with the eagle , then test fixed it (tied it with string) into place on Stony faces boot.

I'm happy with the general size and look of it, so next I shall finish off the detailing and fix it permanently into place.

Hi Stu101
That's a bloody good question. Looking back to when I started this it does seem to be taking a long time, even allowing for the forced break waiting for materials. I didn't even realise it was so long myself .

Unfortunately I don't actually get much spare time to work on this. I mostly manage an hour or so in the evening a couple of days during the week and I can usually get half a day at the weekend as far as regular time goes . Although I have been lucky enough to get a full day here and there.  As I have said before I really do appreciate forum folks patients as well as taking the time to drop in on this thread.

So in answer to your question I can't give a finish time but I am putting in as much time as I can, and I hope it will not be too long until it's all done .

Got more done to the lawgiver and also just about finished off the leg. Just got to add numbers and dial to the gun. Making the gun in a holstered position made me realise just how much artistic license is used with the lawgiver when it's in Dredds boot. To actually hold the lawgiver would mean the holster would need Tardis technology. At this point I really wanted to trial a near finished paint job to get a proper idea of the overall look for this sculpt. I used two types of black, above the knee pad is matt while below it I used a silk sheen which I think gives a better 'synthi leather' look.

CF this will not gather dust in the garage as it's going on show in the dining room.

JF Take the coffee machine hostage until management remove the block.

Once again cheers to all for the words of encouragement.

Both legs are now complete, inclusive of Dredd's boot knife early clay rough pictured. I have also just about got the belt pouches done. Not much to add with regard to the process that hasn't already been covered in previous posts.

Only managed to take a few photos before the camera battery died, I'll add some more pictures in my next post.

Next I want to make his belt buckle, I also want to start on a base for him to stand on which is going to have the original Jan Shepheard's logo.

Just thought I'd add a picture of something familiar I found while looking for boot knife ideas.

I think I am finally on the home straight with old stony face. Although I am painting as I go, I shall repaint the entire sculpt when complete.

Tried out some gold colouring for the eagle etc. Settled for a standard artists acrylic gold, not too shiny or like the "Stallone bling" look. I have also roughed out the shading for the reflections in Dredd's visor, this will eventually be airbrushed.

I have found that all the colours look better painted over a black basecoat.

Started working on the hands, these were always going to be done towards the end as they would get in the way when holding the baton.

Decided to leave the base until Dredd is totally finished, as I only want to lift this once.

At a rough guess I'd say this sculpt weighs in at about 90 - 100 kg's, as I had to add some metal into the armature.

At last old stony face is finished as far as sculpting goes, decided not to include photos at the moment as they don't really show much more than has already been covered before.
I am hoping to be able to get the painting done by next weekend to bring this sculpt to an end, then I shall post pictures of Dredd complete.

To be honest I will be pleased when this is finally finished, not that I haven't enjoyed doing it, and at no time did I ever feel that it would ever not get done.
But as it progressed it really turned into a learning curve of how not to make a sculpture of this size. Most of it I probably had two goes at, I completely underestimated how much material  was needed or how much time it would take to make, as well as how much spare time I actually had available.
I also jumped from area to area depending on the amount of time available on any given day, rather than follow a more structured flow, starting at the top didn't help.

All said and done I would not hesitate to undertake another full size sculpture, but I would  definitely approach it with more planning . I have never sculpted  anything to this scale before, the more I did wrong the more I learned what worked better, I even made some tools out of dinner knives from the charity shop to carve and sculpt with.

Well it's been a long time coming, but I am glad to say Dredd is actually finished.
Thanks of course to Mrs. ATP for suggesting it in the first place, and who now has to adjust to life under the judicial stare of mega city ones hardest lawman.

Dredd is actually finished, just needed to say it again so I know it's real.

All I have to do now is haul all 200+ pounds of him into the dining room as well as lift him onto a base, which I'm afraid to say will unfortunately  have to wait until after Christmas.

I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this project, despite some of the ups, downs, and retries when it didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped it would.

Hmm, what next I wonder?  Full sized Strontium dog, Anderson, an ABC war robot, Mean machine  or perhaps  even The mighty one himself, ( prostrate myself at the mention of his name ).
Maybe I'd better stick to something smaller....ish!

One other thing - licence the mould of that absolutely GORGEOUS shoulder eagle to Planet Replicas, forthwith! Because if I was to buy such a thing, this is the version I would want! It's an absolute stunner.

Good Grud, what a build. I cannot recall ever seeing anything finer, associated with the Galaxy's Greatest forum!!

Thanks for the comments everyone, truly very much appreciated.

I got a PDF done but being a bit of a internet  Luddite I'm at a loss as to which is the best free file sharing site, it would be great if I didn't have to sign up for an account with one. any suggestions would be gratefully received.

As soon as the Christmas decorations are taken down Dredd is being moved into the house.
I'll post a final mage with him in place on the stand.

Hmmm now where did I put the stumm gas mask filters.

Not been a great start to the new year, so the moving of Dredd Was delayed . Anyway he is now in place. wasn't the easiest of moves as the cantankerous bastard wouldn't go through the bloody door, so he had to be carted all the way around to the back garden  on a table into the house through a removed door. He's as heavy as hell.

I originally started to sculpt the logo but it just didn't look right, so I printed it with the intention of cutting it out much the same as I did with the badge, and then I realised that's how it should be done, so I scanned and then cleaned an image then mounted it on clear Perspex.

Still can't find anywhere to put the PDF without having to sign up to a membership of some sort so ( judda fett ) sorry to say I'll have to pass on that.

Once again thanks one and all for looking in and giving support.

Ha, that would be great! I am in awe of your work, atp. I like mucking around with clay as much as the next man, but this is FANTASTIC.

Awesome!  I would've been tempted to cheat and just get CF to lie in some cement.

(No, it wouldn't have worked but hey, JB lying in cement!!  And you thought he was a hard man now!)  :D

Just discovered this thread. Brilliant! just brilliant! A labour of love is too inadequate a phrase. Would've looked fantastic on that empty plinth that various artists were putting work on in Trafalgar Square a couple of years back.
