Marvel had a special screening of the movie for Bill Mantlo, who created Rocket Raccoon back when it was a limited series in the 80s. Mantlo has a pretty sad story, he was common in Marvel back in his heyday but later finished law school and became a public defender (a thankless job in the US). He was injured in a hit and run in 1992, and went through a grueling period in hospital care and later nursing home, dealing with brain damage since then. He was pretty rough financially but it seems, if I'm reading other posts on the FB page correctly, that Marvel and Disney reached an arrangement with the family for other matters. He's been brought up in the thread before by bear

Prog / Re: Prog 1879 - Arms Race

I enjoyed the prog. New Dredd story has got me interested, I'll see where it goes. I hope to see more from Sinister Dexter, the past arc kind of felt disposable to me but fun to read. Slaine felt a little short- I guess this is because four pages being two-page splashes. But some nice art to look at nonetheless. I'm continuing to enjoy Outlier as well, I think the pace is going well on that one. I think I'll have to read it again once the story ends to better appreciate it.

Jaegir felt a bit weird to me, but that's because I'm unfamiliar with the world. I did take advantage of the sale a few days back for Rogue Trooper to buy the three collections so I can get somewhat familiar with that world better before we get more from that world in future progs.

Nice cover too.

I think it is a good thing that they did. The comics industry and community needs to be a lot more welcoming and inclusive, and this episode showed an ugly side of the community that turns away many women. A similar thing happened in gaming circles with Anita Sarkeesian's series presenting a feminist critique of gaming cliches and plot elements, and this prompted a pretty nasty response from that community who apparently don't like that. Some of them tried to cover up their sexism with accusations she didn't actually play the games she criticized, but in general it spawned a lot of rape threats and other trolling towards her, all because she had criticized video games in a way that was disagreeable to the community. I was surprised going onto various sites how this story was propagating with similar results.

In this case, CBR's article was written by Janelle Asselin, who has a good deal of industry experience- hardly an outsider, criticizing the cover of a Teen Titans book. She pointed out some sexist problems among other things and said this was a bad marketing move on DC's part. And as has happened anytime someone tried to discuss the problem of sexism, that prompted a pretty vitriolic response from some pitiful members. This started with the usual low-level stuff accusing her of being a "raging feminist" right up to full-blown "feminazi" with an agenda and the classic "she's the real sexist, she hates men!" spew. Others said she was saying this because she was a pissed off employee and was trying to take DC down a notch. It was all tied to personal attacks on her for making a criticism, not really so much of her criticism really. That spun off into attacks on her outside of the website, on her twitter and even a google-doc type thing she set up for women in the comic industry to fill out a survey of ways they'd been harassed in the industry. Responses were recorded anonymously- she was gathering this for a project of hers- they found her project and inundated the forms with threats to her, some hitting close as they had revealed some rather personal information about her address, phone number, family etc. that she didn't have public on the internet.

and this is not including all the stalking and rape threats she got. Even if it's just "trolling" as those lamers might say, that kind of shit is unacceptable, and again doesn't do much favors in attracting new fans to comic fandom or improving the stereotype of comic fans. If more sites and even the industry took action like CBR it would go a long way.

How much is Rogue Trooper #1 in the USA? I thought it was $3.99, in which case FP's pricing is OTT, but not quite as bad as if the original was $2.99. ($3.99 = £2.39 under current exchange rates; £3.30 is $5.52. Note that there are no taxes in the UK on print comics, although there will be on digital.)

I haven't bought the IDW Rogue Trooper but it is indeed $3.99. IDW also has their Judge Dredd as well as Year One and the Mars Attacks crossover for the same price. That is before taxes of course, so usually when I buy a $3.99 comic at the city sales tax here I'm putting out $4.32 if I buy those.

I've seen some publishers price them at lower numbers, I read another series from Image called East of West which retails at $3.50 before taxes so $3.79 on that.

FWIW Marvel does do the buy a physical get a digital copy deal with some of their comics - at least from what I see in my local shop with the stickers proudly advertising it on their cover- so it is a workable concept. I haven't seen any other publisher pick up that concept, though Amazon has announced a similar promotion for certain, newer books where buying a physical copy would get a kindle copy as well.

As for the whole digital backlog for free, that's another issue. That'd be very generous on their end but I don't see it happening. They haven't even begun to scratch the surface of digitizing their catalog of material anyways so they got to do that first before they think of creating some ways for it to be accessed.

Yeah, like IndigoPrime said if you buy anything on the app you can only use it through said app. Just keep that in mind if you ever happen to get a tablet that's not an iPad. Maybe they'll make a 2000AD app for android that'll recognize purchases across platforms like comixology, but there's no such app for android yet. You can download a teaser prog to get a feel for how it'll look on your iPad- just a note that the app doesn't have a guided view system like comixology does.

Otherwise what you get on the 2000AD app- prog, meg, or GN- will be the same as what you get through the shop or elsewhere in terms what is in it. Amazon has some of the Judge Dredd graphic novels (and the Complete Case Files) digitally as well, though like the 2000AD online app you'll only be able to view those purchases through the kindle app, though there's cross-platform support for it.

I have an iPad as well and I like the app for what it's worth. A big advantage is that I can request what I have in the app on the go and not be constrained by the HD size on the iPad, likewise with comixology or kindle. Otherwise with CBZ's or PDFs I get through the site I keep them on dropbox so I can request them through there for my comic reader that handles those files, though it takes a long ass time for me to upload to dropbox.

Late again to the party it seems. I'll chime in and say the ending for SD left me a bit confused. It's good and all Johnny took down the clowns responsible for the sterilization campaign, but even with him dead this doesn't seem like a good track record for him. He's been involved in like what, three uprisings now that've resulted in status quo or defeats for mutants?

As for the others, I'm all for fattie stories in Dredd, so I'll see where this one goes. The Future Shock was interesting, liked Grey Area, and as usual ABC Warriors is pretty to look at but I'm completely lost as to what's going on.

What does it say then? I'm too lazy.

The sentences given add up to 37, the anniversary year. I didn't notice that either.

I haven't given thought to Gerhart having received some sort of augmentations, that would make sense. Still, the way he was drawn afterwards, it gave me creeps.

Regarding Strontium Dog and time bombs... I would like to know about that too. Maybe something that has been silently been written out of the current continuity? But yeah, time bomb would be useful for some of the issues they've faced, like push a bunch of the Ikan out into space.

Good prog to me. Everything was fun to read, cover was nice too.

I'll say though in regards to the Dredd arc ending, I still can't get the appearance of Judge Gerhart out of my head. How the hell was he still walking? Though, he did survive from a rocket attack before I guess...

It's also on sale in the app, though unlike the store copy you can only use it in the app of course.

I don't want to clog up the other thread with this question-

Is this competition open to those of us outside the UK?

Prog / Re: Prog 1864: BIG JOBS!

Good reads this time around. I'm liking Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog, and I'm happy to see that Grey Area seems to be sticking around for the time being. The other ones are good too, just as I'm a (relatively) new reader I don't know what's going on in ABC Warriors and Ulysses Sweet is more of a fun read to me more than anything.

With regards to Strontium Dog, I forgot about Johnny's ability to pass for human which they've often emphasized but it hasn't come up much recently. I guess it was overdue.
