Seeing as it has just gone into production, maybe we can suggest a few things it may want to look at!

So, who's gonna start...?   :D

Well obviously they'll interview Matt Smith but I'd really love them to interview Tharg himself.

It'd be great if they could put together some fake archive showing 70's caveman Tharg when he first comes to Earth!

It'd be lovely if they could score an interview with Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Alex Garland and try to get across just how well the film was received by 2000AD droids and fans.

heh yes, I was in London last year and couldn't work out why a particular building looked so familiar. Then it twigged, so i said to my mate in all seriousness: "see that building? That's actually a disguised spaceship". He looked at me like I'd gone mad!

can't wait for this doc, sounds ace.

Excellent news, can't wait. I hope they keep the interviews to the creative people behind 2000AD though, not the fans (celeb or otherwise) that they inevitably roll out for this sort of thing. I'd sooner hear what Pat Mills, John Wagner or Mick McMahon has to say, than someone off the telly that used to buy the prog in their youth.

 Stew.

2000AD history is always fascinating, so I'm looking forward to this.  Back in 2007 we had Futureshock on Radio 4 (with Phill Jupitus*) and that had some hugely entertaining stuff in it; the O'Neill censorship bits were great fun (robo-guts and synthi-blood were okay with the management).

Fantastic news. I think interviewing Tharg is genius. Maybe even have that as a 'hoax' running all the way through just to mess people up a bit. Am sure Simon Pegg will make himself available which will raise the profile. About time.

I guess it depends what their end product is going to be.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was an extended DVD, from the sheer amount of material. Depends whether they think enough people would buy it to make it worthwhile.

I posted a question to the team on their facebook page just the other day, asking about any more news and when those of us who couldn't get to FrightFest would be able to see the trailer. Their response is as follows (I'll copy and paste as I know many do not frequent such places).

Latest news is that we're about halfway through production now, and for the last few months we've been focusing on getting the interviews we've already shot into a draft edit to see what we have and how much more content we need. More interviews are already lined up for the new year and we'll be editing the whole time now (there are literally days worth of interviews shot already so it's quite an epic task!) and all being well we're aiming to debut at frightfest 2014.

Regarding the teaser, now we're into 2014 we'll be ramping up the marketing campaign heading towards the debut and that includes getting the teaser out there, soon as possible far as I'm concerned. Stand by for more updates very soon!

Just to let you know how this is coming along. I just watched (twice) the exclusive trailer to the documentary and I just know you are all gonna be blown away by this!

The art they've chosen looks brilliant on screen, as the images pass your eyes and I know creators are gonna love seeing who's stuff is in the trailer. It's not all Dredd, Alpha and Rogue by the way ;)

The short sharp snippets from the interviews are well chosen and not just for 2000 AD fans but works extremely well for comic fans in general (they will want to buy the Prog after watching this). They push why the Prog is different and I have to admit I did laugh at a few creators words, mainly due to the swearing and occasional two fingers being shown.

I'm just gonna sit down and digest what I saw onscreen now, as I'm so excited for us all

I will end by saying that this is not online and IGN have exclusive rights to show this, so don't ask where I saw the trailer as it's gone now!

I can't think of anyone better qualified to interview about 2000ad than Brooker; he brings a creator's insight to a fan's knowledge of (and enthusiasm for) the comic, and I'm always eager to hear anything he has to say. It was an inspired move to have the part of D'Israeli played by Mark Gatiss in full wig and costume:

I remember watching a rare interview with Grant and Dave McKean on a daytime chat show (Pebble Mill or some such crap) discussing their book Arkham Asylum. I was thrilled as the presenters reeled in horror when Dave unveiled his shocking rendition of the Joker while Grant smiled mischievously in the background!  A beautiful moment.

I remember that too! It must have been on during the school holidays. Unless these guys have fucked up by leaving the lens cap on the camera, or spill marmalade in the editing machine, this is going to be fantastic. Cheers for posting, John.

I see what you did there...and its amusing.

Great news, not an artist I've really heard or read doing many interviews (was he ever interviewed in the Meg?) so the documentary carries on being interesting. I demand a 20 hour directors cut.....

The trailer does the best it can with that ever difficult task of making still images work on the moving screen and the attitude of the snippets they've chosen really sets an exciting tone. Can't wait to see it all a bit more fleshed out.

Colour me excited.

Well, that's probably the only thing we would have in common. If I know my 2000 AD history I am guessing that most of the other interviewees (Pat Mills, John Wagner etc.) are from the opposite end of the spectrum from your Anthrax man so I suppose it provides a bit of balance. What do I know, 2000 AD fandom is a broad church and different people like the same things for different reasons. I don't agree with the term "left-wing shit" but it is not a big deal and I'm sure that it won't spoil my enjoyment of the doc.
Title: Re: FUTURE SHOCK! 2000AD Documentary announced

My take on what Scott Ian was saying is, while a lot of things claim to be punk and to the left politically 2000AD is the real deal.
That's how I interpreted his comment anyway.
Title: Re: FUTURE SHOCK! 2000AD Documentary announced
Post by: Dog Deever on 21 August, 2014, 12:13:56 am
It's possible he's referring to only the punk 'scene'- the ages old rift between 'fashion punks' and 'anarchopunks' (oversimplified terms), rather than the broader sense of the traditional left that has nothing really to do with 'the rock scene' as such.

I wouldn't take it too seriously; there's both left-wing and right-wing shit and I don't care what his views are -Scott Ian has been relatively left-of-centre in any political statements he's made- but I suspect he's alluding to the violent and irreverent side of 2000AD in contrast to being preachy, P.C. or worthy.

As both Alan Grant and John Wagner have said, "the more they made Dredd a bastard, the more the fans liked him".

In meathead US popular cultural terms, the phrase left-wing is used as a synonym for being a pussy, a hippy, or for being weak. They think Obama is of the left.

What a nightmare I had booking the night off for this.

Checked the date at work and it was okay, as the amount of people off was in the permitted percentage, so I put my application in. When I picked up my 'confirmed' reply, the date had suddenly become unavailable.

I said that I'd take it off unpaid, as I wasn't coming in that night, no matter what! Anyway, one of the ladies said that I could swap the date off with a mate. This entailed me running about like a mad arsed fly to confirm with a mate, (who's been to a few LFCC's) that it would be very helpful if he'd swap night but not to worry, as I'm gonna be off no matter what.

Anyway, all is well, as he swapped. Now all I have to do is get Granny down the house that day, to wait for Sam arriving on his school bus, so I can head off up London for some drinkies before the showing :D

Well, saw it last night here in Los Angeles. It's pretty much perfect.

Probably hasn't got much new to tell to anyone on this forum but it's put together so well and presented so entertainingly that you'll be more than happy to hear the stories again. Always helps to hear and see the people tell it themselves.

There's nothing glossed over. We get a chronological telling of the history of the comic and where it came from, stopping along the way to hear various rants and anecdotes from the people who were there at the time.

I thought Mills came across like a fucking superhero. He's the one constant through the whole thing and even though I already knew his energy levels are thermonuclear, his passion is very inspiring.

There's a fantastic use of the art throughout although nothing that can beat the animated opening titles that will have you despairing why there isn't an animated 2000AD movie with five different tales.

There's no downside here. It's a perfect documentary. I dunno what else to say. I loved it.

One of the producers, Helen, was there and did a quick Q & A afterwards. Looks like it's going to be doing the festival circuit for a while while they negotiate with various DVD companies but sounds like they do want to give it a proper theater release. This wasn't the final cut as apparently they'll be doing more last-minute interviewees and editing that in. If there's a DVD there'll be hours of extras. Lovely-jubbly!

About 100 minutes in all. Just about the perfect length,  really. Very hard to keep momentum when your movie is essentially nothing but talking heads but all the personalities are so forthright, it's not a problem here. I'd listen to Mills read the phone book and I bet he'd make it fascinating!

Jeez, I set up a BFI account very late last night to speed up booking for today.

I got in to work to be greeted by a rush project. Finally found a spare moment to book. There were three tickets left! I will be right at the back which is fine by me.

Phew.

There's no way I could have gotten to London that day, so I've just got to wait.  Which sucks.

I'm hoping it hits Cardiff at some point  Chapter Arts has a decent cinema for these off the wall types films (the last film I saw there was Dinsoaur 13) - with any luck Future Shock will have a three day run there.

I've just booked a ticket and from what I could tell, there are at least 30 seats still spare (just under half of the total - it's one of the smaller BFI rooms). None left on the end of a row if that's a barrier.

Very excited about the film, and especially seeing Mills and O'Neill in the flesh!

Well was lucky enough to see this at Thought Bubble yesterday. Now its fair to say that I was an easy sell and was pretty much predisposed to love this BUT being as objective as possible it was a really great documentry as well as being F**kin' AMAZING!

It juggled keeping the story of 2000ad's 37 year history ticking along chronologically while focusing on interesting themes throughout. Tackled pretty much ever aspect of the comic you could wish for both beautiful and ugly. The makers managed to somehow pull out some wonderfully frank and honest commentry from a host of interested parties. Some of the editing was quite superb. Its genuinely laughout loud funny at times. Oh and the use of animated stills from the comic was done really well making the whole talking head thing wonderfully broken up with great visuals. Music was great...

... okay so I'm not being that objective am I. I know everyone whats more Dredd and what not but for me this was the 2000ad movie I've been waiting for. While I know a documentry will always be a niche market but this is the kinda thing that can generate real interest from those that see it in our lovely little comic.

Thanks to all involved for making it.

The worst one was a promising anecdote by Gibbons: "I was drawing judge Caligula holding the goldfish above his head and Kevin O'Neil leant over my shoulder and said...." - we never got to find out!

Glitches aside, it was a superb piece of work, especially Mr Mills' potty-mouthed rantings. I knew a lot of the stories, but there was plenty of gems that were new to me. The semi-animated title sequence and cut-aways were fantastic too - I could watch an hour and  half of those!

I'll put it in spoilers

I think it was Mick McMahon and Dave, not Kev (although I think Kev might have been relating part of the story.

There was a rivalry between Mick and Dave, trying to outdo each other (as there was with other artists).

Mick would stand behind Dave making comments along the lines, of 'Oh, right - ok... you know that's going to be out there forever?' - now Mick's image of Cal announcing Judge Fish is a bit dodgy looking (he's talked about it in his blog).

So whenever Mick would come along and say to Dave, 'Hmmm, what's that then?' If he thought something wasn't up to scratch. Dave would reply 'It's Judge Cal holding up a goldfish bowl'

Anyway, it's along those lines...

I'm looking for OLD pics of Pat Mills, Alan Moore and Grant Morrison!  Older pics the better, 70's / 80's.

By all means let people know that it's for the doc, and that I'll also need to get a usage clearance form signed off from the owner if that's ok.

So if you have any photos that you may have taken at a signing, then that would be awesome but if you just find ones off the web, they need to know who took it to get clearance.

Pat Mills on the documentary, and on the kind of coruscating rant that reduced eighties editors to trembling wrecks every time the phone rang. I've no idea how accurate the picture Mills paints might be, and he makes an awful lot of accusations based on nothing more than supposition, but it's an entertaining read and a useful supplement to David Bishop's Thrillpower Overload:

The film, as well as being funny, sad and informative, is genuinely dramatic because it follows a classic movie ‘three act’ structure. The first time I watched it, I bristled at the director giving so much screen time to the bad guys. But watching it the second time around I realised he was absolutely right.

They provide necessary conflict and drama. Otherwise it would just be a self-congratulatory publicity piece. The 2000 AD story, as presented in the film, has a really great plot with endless twists and turns as the bad guys – consciously, subconsciously or just stupidly – set out to destroy the Galaxy's Greatest Comic.

Why were so many ex-2000 AD editors determined to destroy my successful vision for the comic? Ego? Jealousy? Stupidity? Or did they not actually like what 2000 AD stands for, and want to reinvent it in their own image? I fear it was the latter, and I believe they've admitted as much.

The rot first began when readers’ popularity polls were deliberately ignored in favour of what a minority of vocal fans preferred. In rough terms the views of 80,000 mainstream readers were ignored in favour of a minority of less than 20,000.

Why? Maybe because they made the comic and thus the editor seem older and cooler. The tail began to wag the dog and that's why the circulation first dropped. And this in turn gave editors the excuse to apply radical surgery. NME regularly reviewed comics, and 2000 AD in particular.

NME applauded 2000 AD’s ‘cooler’ and more ‘hip’ stories. They encouraged the editors to move the comic far too close to Deadline magazine. They encouraged the psychedelic elements and discouraged the storytelling on which 2000 AD was built, and which our mainstream readers loved.

This preceded the attempts to make 2000 AD another Vertigo or Loaded. Anything other than make 2000 AD like 2000 AD. Various editors were convinced that falling sales required a radical new face-lift. We had to wait for Matt Smith – the current editor – to come along and restore the comic's fortunes by doing the bleeding obvious.

Bishop and Diggle claim that they had to allow management to change 2000 AD to appeal to the soft porn/Loaded/lads mag reader. They had to do what they were told and it was all management's fault. No, it wasn't. And no you don't. It's your responsibility as editors to resist ludicrous and shameful decisions.

It was during this period that creators were forced to sign away film rights as well as have their names omitted on the film pitches on their stories. What the doc doesn't reveal is why McManus and Bishop were such a key part of this betrayal. It's because they thought they were going to be exec producers or similar on the films.

It cost 2000 AD thousands and thousands of pounds to actually fund these people from Hollywood to have a free option on all 2000 AD characters! Strontium Dog was optioned for one dollar and that's all they had to show for it. Ultimately, that costs YOU, the reader, because all that money could have been invested in your comic.

On screen, Dave defends his position with a certain amused cynicism. But cynicism is the closest ally of the establishment. As long as you're cynical, it gives you an excuse to do nothing.

That said, Dave (and Grant Morrison) have the good grace to acknowledge where they led the comic astray and they do so in a genuine and heartfelt way that I appreciated. It's a measure of how confident and successful they both are that they don't have a problem admitting mistakes.

Andy Diggle still has yet to do so. He tried to once when he was still editor, by writing to me, but what began as an unconditional letter of apology halfway through turned into yet another abusive and aggressive rant on why my work was crap and why this upset him and made him go into Hulk mode.

His number one priority was almost certainly getting rid of me altogether. He would make a point of stressing to me that I was only the co-creator of my stories and characters. The artists were the real creators, it was implied, and so I could be replaced.

At the 2000 AD party to celebrate making it to the millennium, he greeted me by launching into a verbal attack on my work, listing my faults. He followed up his verbal attack with a letter detailing ‘the evidence’, and another angry, provocative letter from Andy to me began with "This is the worst script I've ever read".

I wouldn't mind quite so much if Andy's messianic vision for 2000 AD had been that of a genius. It just might have been worth putting up with his appalling rudeness and total lack of respect. But it wasn’t and so his vision has now been mercifully flushed away.

Mills is one of only two people able to give a first hand account of the complete history of the comic, and I take any factual information he offers at face value. His speculation concerning the motives of others is best enjoyed as entertainment.

It's ironic that Mills's enmity with Diggle arises from the latter adopting a similar strategy of rejecting stale ideas from industry stalwarts who had become complacent, and both Diggle and Morrison's Summer Offensive were consciously reflecting the brash and iconoclastic way Mills describes himself operating in 2000ad's early days.

It's as if Mills looked in the mirror and didn't like what he saw.

Mills is a shrewd character in other ways, though, and his analysis of what went wrong in the nineties is perceptive and very persuasive. If CRISIS had taken off in the way everyone hoped, 2000ad would probably have been spared the indignity of being dressed up in rave gear, then forced to pretend it found dragons, witches, and then the Spice Girls exciting.

I take any factual information he offers at face value.

But what constitutes "factual information"? Pat is quick to conflate 2000AD's falling sales with the 'dark days' of the Bishop/Diggle era, for example, but in this he is simply wrong: even Alan McKenzie says that 2000AD shed the vast majority of its lost readership under his watch (citing a catastrophic change of distributors*), long before Bishop or Diggle got anywhere near the comic.

Cheers

Jim

*Which was certainly borne out by my experience when —seemingly overnight— the comic vanished from all the newsagents in both the town where I was living and the town where I was studying at university.

In many ways the Diggle vs. Mills scuffle reminds me of the Byrne vs. Shooter scrap. It makes for good entertainment for those of us who love our comic history and gaining an insight into what goes on behind the scenes. In other ways its a real shame that two people for whom the comic clearly means so much and who have done so much work for it, have a 'public' slanging match. All be it a very brief one from Andy Diggle, compared to Pat Mills' airing of his views.

As ever with these things we're very unlikely, from the outside, to get a clear picture of the rights and wrongs of it all. The truth almost certainly lies somewhere in-between the two versions, though how far towards one side, or the other, we can only speculate.

Whatever I think of Pat Mills' take on events and the way he seems to go about holding onto a grudge, there can be no doubt that his forthright and open reporting on matters is always readable and I'm very glad that he continues to share his opinions and insights.

As ever, Andy Diggle's list of sins just seems sillier and pettier as they get smaller in the rear-view mirror.  I'd have liked to have read an actual review of the movie instead of more of that tomfoolery.

It's impossible, as Colin says, to accurately judge who was wrong or right on each particular pint, but Andy Diggle certainly seems to approach the whole thing with far more dignity and grace than Pat.

Thanks for those links to the Mills version and the Diggle version. I'm amused by the fact that although they are at odds with each other, nothing one says ever contradicts the other. So they're probably both telling the truth! It's more that both people rubbed each other up the wrong way. I suppose there's an extent to which Mills presumably thought his Slaine and Deadlock scripts were good, while Diggle didn't, but otherwise they're not disagreeing with each other's version of events.

Honestly, my memory of the film is that most of it is largely celebratory, with a fair bit given over to Kevin O'Neill + Mills railing against the suits from IPC, followed by Bishop and Diggle railing against the suits at Egmont, than there is infighting between Mills and Diggle (although that certainly does feature, and very entertaining it is, too).

Really enjoyed this at the Edinburgh Film Festival, and the couple I went along with who had no real prior knowledge of 2000AD beyond the Dredd movies both really enjoyed it too and enthused about how well it worked to the uninitiated. I was a little worried as I watched it that they wouldn't be getting as much out of it but apparently wasn't the case at all.

Would buy a copy for sure.

Finally saw it last Friday at the QFT in Belfast -thought it was brilliant! Apart from all the great contributions from the creators, I really loved the animated bits and pieces. Mrs Mikey also really enjoyed it - she wouldn't be a regular reader by any means either, but she has now declared her love for Pat Mills.

I was too shy to say hello to Judge Russell, maybe next time mate! It's the first time I've seen the Planet Replicas kit in the flesh and it looked incredible!

And yes, a dvd / blu ray release would get my vote too.

I was delighted when comics writer and editor John Freeman asked me to write a review for his Down the Tubes website.  It's the first time I've been asked to write something outside of my Oink! Blog so I jumped at the chance.  Loved writing it and even editing it down to the required length.  Here's the link, can you let me know what you think?  :)  I hope I did it justice for you long-time fans, it was a marvellous film!

Got to see the film in its entirety this morning at Frightfest in Leicester square. Completely Zarjaz, including getting the end of the Dave Gibbons anecdote that I missed at Thought Bubble last year.

Also a Q&A afterwards with producer and director who confirmed that we can expect an announcement about a DVD release in the next few weeks. Could make a perfect stocking filler for that special Squaxx in your life (i.e. yourself).

Also nice to notice thanks to Pete Wells block's 2000AD Covers Uncovered blog and ECBT2000AD in the end credits which I missed at TB.

Yeah it would be wonderful if that was possible .They've talked about how much extra stuff there is and how if it had been practical they'd have made a much, much longer cut. Would be great to see that stuff as extras.

Post by: Eamonn Clarke on 30 August, 2015, 01:39:02 pm
They did talk about the hours of extra footage, but also about how much of the post production budget went on legal fees. I know nothing about documentary production but they seemed to suggest that the costs of clearing the unused footage might be prohibitive.
Title: Re: FUTURE SHOCK! 2000AD Documentary announced
Post by: Steve Green on 30 August, 2015, 02:06:12 pm
That's interesting, I hadn't thought of that.

I would have thought that there would be relatively safe footage to include though, or if they have to run it through legal regardless to satisfy the distributor?

I know they interviewed me, Steve Sterlacchini and Burdis at LSCC, and I don't *think* I slagged anyone off...

Maybe it was a Health and Safety Risk Assessment thing, triggering narcolepsy :D

Title: Re: FUTURE SHOCK! 2000AD Documentary announced

It can go anywhere from €0 a minute to €10,000 and more depending on who owns the footage, who's in it, and whether it's a once only broadcast or not - if it's for commercial use that's probably even more. The average cost for a once only broadcast of archived material from a private film archive is a few hundred for a minute of footage.

These charges are exempt from things like EPK packages because they are created for the purpose of review.

Great to hear about the DVD release. Just from any Irish point-of-view, I wonder if the producers have submitted FUTURE SHOCK to any of the film festivals here in Ireland, the Dublin International Film Festival being one example? Also, would a limited release in "Arthouse" or similar Indie-vibe cinemas be on the cards? The Irish Film Institute would be a good spot in which to show it, methinks.

It was a great screening and turn-out.

Future Shock is a brilliantly structured compression of the 2000AD story that looks beautiful and is never boring; it's frank and honest in a way that fittingly reflects the attitude 2000AD fought to have as a comic and it's not afraid to go to the places you may not expect it to go to and ask questions that ought to be asked - it's also very funny. The opening titles and chapter stops feature lovely animated moments of classic 2000AD black and white art and throughout its duration the aptly scored music punctuated and never intruded.

This is not hyperbole but it's the best film I've seen about a comic.

Thanks to Rebellion for allowing the crew to make such an honest film (I really can't see such a film being made about any comic across the water) and thanks to Stanton Media/Deviant Films for making it. The 3 years were worth it.

The Q&A with Kevin O'Neill and Producer Sean Hogan was great: Kevin O'Neill said there's a final LOEG comic to "wrap it all up" and more Marshall Law on the way and Sean Hogan said if they get enough good response from the DVD and social media requests there may well be a limited edition blu-ray with extras on the way.

So, I thought I saw a poster at the weekend advertising this at Glasgow's finest, the GFT, over the Christms holidays. Couldn't find anything on their website so sent email and got this back:
Quote from: Man at the GFT
We should be showing ‘Future Shock: The Story of 2000ad’ but the current programme is only confirmed up to the 24th of December.  For shows past that date, we are still confirming showing times so they are not yet available for sale.  The new brochure will be released on 17th December and we will be able to take bookings for performances after Christmas once the brochure is out.

I realise this is going to be behind the DVD release but, personally, I prefer to see a film in the cinema given the chance. In addition, I'm a single man and I don't like drinking by myself. So lets make a really vague plan to maybe watch this and have some pints or something.

Or we can get some acid and see 2001 instead.

I don't think there are any on this one.

They've talked about the extra footage (they were at Pat's for about 11 hours alone)

From what they've said, the legal clearance would cost a fair amount - I guess it depends how well this sells - they originally had an eight hour edit when they first started.

Yeah got mine and watched. Loved it.

You know what the main feeling it gave me was pride. Which is very silly, but yeah when it ended I felt pride again. I'm just a fan, have and had nothing to do with the comic (or film) on any level other than that and yet watching this I felt massive pride. I think it was just the fact that I was able to empathise with the celebration of something I really love with people who share many of my thoughts about it. Its certainly warts and all and doesn't hide away from the comics many problems but what primarily comes through is the massive affection and respect for what the comic gives us that is so utterly unique.

Wonderful stuff.

OK guys people are telling me to buy what I want for Christmas so I take it that this is well worth a buy? For a 4 year old reader like me does it add to the likes of David Bishop's book on the history of the comic?

TIA for all advice.

I've just finished watching it and the only complaint I have is that it was far too short!
I absolutely loved it. A true love letter to the comic.
As someone who does not attend conventions it was great to see and hear the creators behind the comic (Pete Milligan being my new favourite because he was drinking from a Spurs mug  :D).
It does add new stuff to Bishop's book but I would say it's more of a companion to the book rather than different. Is it worth a buy? Most definitely!
I think the best part I took from the documentary was the feeling of family. The writers, the artists, the editors, the letterers and the readers are all part of one, big family that...Well, just gets it. Made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
At £7.99 this DVD is an absolute steal for anyone interested in The Galaxy's Greatest Comic.
Loved it.

As a life long fan, I loved the doc.

But I wanted to record my wife's response. She's not a comic fan, she's read a few to keep me happy over the years, but for her, what was made clear by the documentary was the punk sensibilities of the artists involved - as a punk singer herself in '77, and a minor footnote it that safety pinned era, she was reinvigorated by what is still a kick against the pricks 38 years later.

So inspired by the show, she's decided to take on a PhD in culture and media.

It's impressive what non-fans can get out of things you dote over.

Looking forward to his reassessment of Dredd - I remember being surprised by his relatively dismissive review (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tknJUPcxoRM) of it at the time.

Awesome documentary. Very entertaining, also daring/saddening at times. For me the film is to the prog what the 2012 DREDD was to the character Judge Dredd. Feels like it got to the core of it.

Hopefully it'll get the word around like the "documentary" Dig did for The Brian Jonestown Massacre!

The FQP WINTER SALE & COMPETITION!

Win! one of three copies of FUTURESHOCK- The Story of 2000 AD and a signed copy of the film poster (signed by the director)

Review by Richmond Clements, used with kind permission of the FPI Blog.

2000 AD has been a part of comic’s history since the far of days of 1977. This documentary, now available on DVD and on streaming services, tells of the birth, near death and renaissance of the title.
It does a fantastic job of setting up the historical context of 2000 AD, with news footage from the time. Strikes, riots, recession and punk rock. Nothing at all like today, of course.

From this cauldron of anger and frustration 2000 AD emerged, steered by the indefatigable Pat Mills. As the founder of the feast, Mills gets the lion’s share of screen time here, and he makes the most of it. It’s well known that Mills has had some shaky relationships with publishers and editors in the past, and true to form, he doesn’t hold back here. That is not to say that this is film a soapbox for Mills. I’m not going to go into details about these feuds here. I shall only say that all sides get to make their point.

The film makers have managed to get interviews from an impressive amount of creators. The only noticeable absence being a certain bearded resident of Northampton, but I suspect he has said all he needs to say about the comic many times over. The Halo Jones baton is taken up by Neil Gaiman (who has written a total of 10 pages for the comic, so he just about scrapes in as a script droid!). He recounts how Moore told him the rest of the saga, and that it would have been great – but I think we knew that already!

A vast amount of material was recorded for this – in a recent 2000 AD podcast, director Paul Goodwin said his first cut came in at something like five hours! And oh how I would love to see that version. As it is, there are a great many superb and entertaining stories told.

I have just realised I have barely mentioned the interviewees. Put it this way: think of an artist or writer who has worked for the comic. They’re probably in there. Everyone from those involved right at the beginning, Mills, Wagner, Bolland, Gibbons, to the very newest crop of droids, such as Emma Beeby, get a word in. We also get comments from some super fans – screenwriter Alex Garland and Scott (Not) Ian from Anthrax are amongst those featured.  And these interview pieces are intercut with some terrific animations of iconic 2000AD moments.

I cannot praise this film enough. It is an important and amazingly constructed piece of work. This is absolutely required viewing for any comic fan.

Thanks to the kind folks at METRODOME we have 3 copies of the DVD to give away as well as a signed ‘Quad’ poster measuring (according to the internet) 30 inches by 40 inches! just like the one pictured Above.

To be in with a chance at either the poster AND a DVD or one of the other two DVD’s simply buy comics from FQP.

For all sales between now and the end of January 2016 we’ll send you a raffle ticket. Each comic bought is a single raffle ticket so the more you buy the more likely you will win. Also, the winners will have the costs of their purchases refunded.

To also help with this, all FutureQuake & Something Wicked apart from the latest issues are going to be priced at £1.50 for the duration. Simply get in touch with us here at FQP with an order (for the competition please do not use the shop) and we’ll even combine any postage too.

The email to use is: futurequakepress AT googlemail DOT com

So, now is the time to fill the gaps in your collection, or even start a new one. All comics currently available are listed HERE.  (http://www.futurequake.co.uk/shop.php)

My brother bought me it for Christmas.  Watched half of it with him; though the sound of drunk family members in the other room began to get on our tits after a while (I mean; the two of us getting pissed and noisy is fine, but not other people, for heaven's sake).  So I'm going to save the rest of it till I see him again; which hopefully won't be too long.

I really enjoyed the parts I saw; Pat Mills in his ranty element; and finally being able to put a voice and face to droids I've never seen or heard speak before ('Dark' Bishop has the look and voice to suit his supervillain name, for example). I'd thought it was mainly Pat Mills and a smattering of editorial droids; but I was delighted to see John Wagner, Alan Grant, Kev O'Neill and Carlos Ezquerra.  Looking forward to watching the rest; which will be the next time I go across the water to Leicester.

Kim Newman has a review of Future Shock! in the latest issue of Sight & Sound (February 2016). It's generally positive though more descriptive than analytical. Perhaps typically even though Newman states that Pat Mills is "the presiding genius of 2000AD and of Paul Goodwin's documentary history" the review itself is adorned with a photo of Neil Gaiman whose actual contributions to the comic are dwarfed by Pat's but presumably has a higher name recognition factor with S&S's readers.  :|

Watched this last night...I did chuckle that after my 23 years of loyal service to THE greatest comic in the galaxy, pretty much my only appearance was the BLAIR-1 stuff to illustrate the lowest point of it's history..ha!...overall I enjoyed it though ...Pat was ace as always and D Bishop was great value...he gave me my break so of course I like him!...too many interviews with the creators who had deserted the prog for the US...what about those ones who didn't? Henry could have been interviewed more because if ever there is an artist who could've chased the dollar, it's him...or Greg Staples too...good documentary though and it made me very proud to be a little part of my beloved 2000ad.

You betray your modesty too well sir. You're contribution to The Galaxies Greatest is fair from little. I mean statistically you're number 23 on the 'Heroes of 2000ad' list and given the quality of the vast majority of those contributions that's quite something!

...too many interviews with the creators who had deserted the prog for the US...what about those ones who didn't?

Saw the film tonight at a lovely screening in Bristol with Rob Williams in attendance for a little Q & A that balanced the below problem a bit better than if I'd seen it without him!

It's a slickly done and lovely film but as always the emphasis is almost entirely rooted within the classic era - the audience became notably restless in the 20-minute "Pat Mills calling Bishop and Diggle dicks" segment and we hardly heard from those creators that have made the Matt Smith era so distinctively creative. What about writergod Al Ewing f'rinstance?

These are know-all nitpicks however and as a film it effectively encapsulates the spirit of the comic well I thought, and those at the screening with little knowledge were very impressed at the breadth of balls and continuing energy of the comic that we choose to worship. Not bad at all

Yeah, it would have been nice to see a few more droids who stuck around after the 90s.

I'm not sure how the running time was settled on, but an extra 20 mins covering that would have been great.

I could listen to Pat Mills all day and not get tired.

However, I agree it could have featured the current crop of writers and artists a bit more.

Any chance of a special edition that features more of the interviews as extras?
Even better, a second disk with the rest of the footage cut into a sister documentary? Like they did with the cut footage from Spinal Tap?

As much as I enjoyed some of it I thought there were so many things it missed out on and creators who either didn't appear or who were given very little screen time.
Was more a Pat Mills history of 2000.

Brought, enjoy the animations (Was I exited to see Slaine slice into that Diluvial!) & now think that it might have needed more of those.

Thought some of the commentary was a bit over top, a bit harsh, but also realise that probably in keeping with the street vibe & the rough history of the magazine.

Spotted on twitter via Mr Burdis - seems like they're editing some bonus bits, no more info other than that.

Blu-ray release, maybe?

I have a vague recollection at a Q&A that BR was considerably more expensive to produce, bearing in mind it's a niche product.

Also, more importantly, Metrodome who were distributing it have recently gone into administration.

So it could be online extras rather than physical, all speculation at the mo.

I love Uncle Pat! He could talk for England, though.

Actually, I'm sure Mills - if chosen to compete in the Banging On event at an international level - would cite his Irish granny as an excuse to hop on Mike Higgins' team and avoid representing a state with a history of colonial oppression.

My Sony BDP-S1100 is a stunning little player. Region B locked but compact, silent as the grave and cheap as chips. You can get them in Asda for £40.

Great stuff! I don't have a Blu Ray machine either and not even Pat Mills visiting King's Reach Tower would be enough to persuade Mrs Geoff that one was a necessary addition to the house.

Definitely be getting the DVD though.

First published in 1977 at the height of the punk era, UK Sci-Fi comic 2000AD was violent, anti-authoritarian, darkly funny and distinctly British. With such iconic characters as Strontium Dog, Nemesis and Judge Dredd, it became the anarchic underdog that forever changed the face of the international comics industry.

Offering a comprehensive overview of the comic s history, Future Shock! takes a funny, moving and passionate look at the various highs and lows of how a band of talented eccentrics came together to create a visionary and extraordinary publication that still remains a game-changer more than 40 years later.

Featuring interviews with the likes of Pat Mills (ABC Warriors, Slaine), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), Neil Gaiman (The Sandman), Karl Urban (Dredd) and Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Future Shock! is the definitive story of the most successful comic in the galaxy - now loaded with over six hours of previously unseen extras.
