Issue #1 is in my picks for my subs from my LCS.
Haven't found anything to like from IDW so far in regards to Dredd but willing to give it a go.

Bought it, read it....surprisingly liked it a heck of a lot! The dialogue is kinda not Dreddy, but that's a minor quibble considering this isn't OUR Dredd.

It's weird.

The Americans don't seem to get that Dredd is a Policeman following procedure dispassionately.
So they make him bark orders and fight in a Last Action Hero way as if he is constantly stressed or antagonised. There's nothing here that would make him break a sweat.

Also just in terms of dialogue extraordinarily whoever wrote this has never even read The Dark Judges. Dredd never speaks to Anderson like this.
But all in all as an opener it was OK and the art was fine, again sorry to say, for Americans who keep trying to do splash pages.

To be fair, in the earlier days of the strip, Dredd did come across as a bellowing pompous puffed chest kind of guy, especially as illustrated by Ron Smith. Even stuff like Bolland's "These blocks are under arrest!" cover etc. He often wouldn't really be described as dispassionate. And he sure got pissed off at times even in the 90s, showing his ego in clashes with various people.

So I guess the American take is still going for a 70s or 80s over-the-top vibe I guess. But I agree it's not in character, and in general I don't like the IDW Dredd comics. Even for an over-the-top style, they lack the layers and genius of Wagner's writing. I do look forward to checking this one out though.

Was an okay issue, Layman is a great writer, but also usually uses a lot of comedy. He did a short run on Detective Comics and the big series he is known for is all about food crimes and is very over the top, it has a cyborg rooster that is a killing machine and battles things like Pengthulu or Mecha Turducken

Funny, I was going to use that "These blocks are under arrest" quote too, as an example of Dredd's forceful manner in the past.

Worth noting that this is a comic aimed at the U.S market and the character is still relatively unknown to many, so it will serve as an introduction to Judge Dredd for many readers.

Baring that in mind, the tone appears consistent with characterisation from the past.
Not sure a more introspective, contemplative Dredd would suit the extreme hyperbolic set up and narrative or serve as an effective introduction to Judge Dredd's world.

I'll be most intrigued to see what the sales of the title are like, particularly in the U.S.

Dredd's usually angry most of the time. Not sure where you got dispassionate from. Impartial, yes.

The Judges tone is totally off, the action dumb as rocks, the lawmaster looks wonky but it's still a fun comic. It's a STOOPID comic but well enough executed to be enjoyable and 'bring on the aliens....'

There is lots to nit pick and if you're precious about Dredd then it might bug you but if you can accept Inferno level Dredd it's grand.

Just realised I've not contributed to this thread yet (which is why it hasn't shown up on my 'Show new replies to my posts' page).

I thought it was fair enough - hovering around the previous Predator level or entertainment (Incubus was great).  I wonder if many of the US creators are only reading the first case file before trying their hand at Stoney Face?

Big news today, despite characterisation being off, it's in continuity!
from PvJDvA #2, page 19:
"I know what these things can do, creep*"
"*see Judge Dredd Vs. Aliens: Incubus"

Yes I was shocked by that as well , it's our DREDD despite all the publicity saying it was the IDW version, mind you i always pretend the mars attacks crossover is in normal DREDD continuity.
