Ooh. Pretty.
« on: 03 January, 2015, 01:50:26 PM »
I just got me a new monitor, as my old one was dying.

I spent a bit of time configuring it, and now I can actually see the different colours (50 shades of grey!) on this site.

I've never seen this before, not in 13 years of frequenting the forum.

I didn't know, for example, that each post in a thread has an alternating colour. Or that the "Welcome to the Board", "Off Topic" and other boxes on the home page were different shades from the "Last Post" bit.

It was all just white to me!

Glad to see someone with 7000+ posts has been missing out too!

Search on-line for a monitor calibration test.

I used this: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

It might seem quite dull, but the results are staggering in terms of hidden detail across, well across everything. Skyrim, in particular, for me.

When I say "dull" I mean in the sense that the display isn't bright.

I had a look at that but it was beyond me - pixel-walking? Noisy dithering? Saturation? Clock & phase? I established that my monitor is far from ideal from the test pages, but the advice on fixing it could be in Greek for all I know.

Ahhh… monitor calibration, the bane of the graphic designer's life.

Cheers

In my experience most monitors are set way too bright and contrasty by default - its well worth calibrating, or even manually adjusting, makes a world of difference. Same goes for TVs, which are generally configured for 'shop display' mode out of the box. Always makes me wince when i see people's TVs set up so poorly that everyone on screen looks bright orange.

And don't even get me started on motion smoothing/HFR.
