Apologies folks - I'm on holiday at the moment and the internet connection where we are is a little unstable - so there may be the odd delay in things - bear with me - using phone as a hotspot at the moment and the poor boy is having to settle for Minecraft not Fortnite!

To business...

You could argue that Necropolis was the end of the original Dredd Golden age, the end of an era as old classic Dredd stumbled - we went through a period of change and when Wagner came back to the Prog to return the series to the heights of its powers it was a different beast. I would certainly argue that Tour of Duty is the pinnacle of Modern Dredd. A story that has a bit of everything which has made that new era of Dredd what it is at its very best, while retaining an absolute cohesion as a single story. All that matters now however is which you prefer...

Seed 9 Necropolis - Progs 662 - 699

Vs

Seed 10 Tour of Duty - Progs 1649-1693

Still with the simple purity of popping the name of the Epic you prefer in a reply to this thread (remember to mark it clearly so I can spot it - bold tags are good) and then say whatever the heck you like to about these two great stories.

We’re 3 day votes for the semis, so this one will close first thing in the morning Friday 16th April - winner is a finalist - loser goes to a 3rd place play-off

All links go through to AlexF’s simply brilliant Dredd Epics Ranked blog. You may need to scroll to find his write up of a particular story - but I’d suggest just reading the whole thing anyway - it's fantastic stuff.

Baffled by what’s going on here - well we have a a thread for that - though that might leave you more confused than anything.

Rules for what they are worth.

Not sure about anything just ask and I’ll blag it.

Well wow we are really at the big hitters now. Two of the earliest Epics in this semi and both very, very different stories. One a straight up war story, singlar in its vision, art and focus. The other a collage of ideas, setting and imagination with a colladiscope of art work. All that matters now however is which is your favourite.

Seed 4 Apocalypse War (inc Block Mania) Progs 236-270

Vs

Seed 11 Judge Child - Progs 156 - 181

General / Dredd Epics Ranked - BETTER!!! 12th to 5th Place Play-off
« on: 12 April, 2021, 06:37:25 AM »
So here we go folks the very last of these to decide the topper-most Judge Dredd epics outside the big 4 (which aren’t actually the big four but I won’t return to my whining… at this point at least). There are some truly stunning stories here, all classics in their own way BUT which are the best DREDD and EPICS. Well that’s for you to determine…

Look at the list of 8 Dredd stories below and tell me your top three:

1 (your favourite) will get 3 points
2 (your 2nd fav) will get 2 points
3 (your 3rd fav) will get 1 point

(1)  America Megs (Vol. 1) 1-7

(2)  The Dead Man Progs 650-662

(3) Origins - Progs 1500-1504; 1505-1519; 1529-1535

(5) Day of Chaos Progs 1743-1789

(6) Terror / Total War Progs 1392-1399, 1407-1422

 (10) The Day the Law Died - Judge Cal - Progs 86 - 108

(15) The Pit - Progs 970 - 999

(16) Oz - Progs 545-570

I’ll give this one the full 4 days to run its course and hope to close voting first thing Friday 16th April . One note, I'm going away today for a week(ish) and we are meant to have wifi BUT if I go off line we might have a delay... fingers crossed we'll be fine

« on: 08 April, 2021, 06:39:30 AM »
So a bit of twiddling and reflecting on some feedback - and thinking about making these upper placing as representative as possible I’ve rejigged the voting and the previous 20 - 17th votes are null and void - sorry folks BUT those who wish to (why oh why) get another chance to vote for City of the Damned and push it even higher up the rankings!... or do at least some justice to The Cursed Earth...

Look at the list of 8 Dredd stories below and tell me your top three:

1 (your favourite) will get 3 points
2 (your 2nd fav) will get 2 points
3 (your 3rd fav) will get 1 point

(47) City of the Damned - Progs 393-406

(40) Mechanismo - Megs 2.12-2.17; 2.22-2.26; 2.37-2.43

(30) Trifecta - Progs 1804-1812

(14) The Small House - Progs 2100 - 2109

(11) The Cursed Earth - Progs 61 - 85

(9) Machine Law - Progs 2024-2029 and 2115-2122

(8) Titan /Enceladus Progs 1862-1869, 1924-1928, 1940-1947

(7) Mandroid

I’ll close voting first thing Saturday 10th April

Okay so instead of my normal blather I’ll intro this one with some logistics. Quarter finals. I’ve matched pairings by taking the highest Seed and putting it against the lowest Seed. One a day (with play-offs running along side) 3 days for these ones. Winners in the semis, losers into a play-off for positions 12-5… you’re confused - look I’m running this thing and I’m hanging on by my fingernails too!

Prog / Prog 2226 - Enter the Nunja
« on: 06 April, 2021, 05:12:13 PM »
I mean have we got this story just so someone can do that pun Nunja - I love a puin but come on...

ANYWAY

Dredd is another masterclass dfrom Neimand with Tom Foster at the absolute top of his game acompanying on art. The scene is well and truly set. We have SJS crushing the will of ex-Titan cons and now on a collision course with Dredd. Fantastic I'm so bought into this already and completely on edge about how this might develop.

Thistlebone remains creepy and wonderful and creepy again.

Visions of Deadworld another horrific beaut.

3riller - Chorus and the Ring not sure about this. Just seems like a standard ubercapable figher getting a mission to so their kick ass stills. I means its all dressed up with fancy words from 90s Vertigo and lovely Mike Collins art but ... well lets see how it goes from here.

Feral and Foe is getting broader and broader in its comedy - I mean the 'man eater in the back of the Wagon' just feels a little too far. Still damned entertaining stuff and its always played for laughs so...

Overall decent Prog with some real highlights.

Other Reviews / El Mestizo
« on: 05 April, 2021, 09:32:14 AM »
I couldn't find a thread about this - apologise if there's one I've missed.

There really should a thread as this handsome volume deserves one. Sure I've only just got around to reading this having owned it for almost 3 years - I think - such is the climb to the top of my 'too read list'. Anyway its great package. Good size, nice heavy paper that holds rich deep blacks. If the reproduction is a little fuzzy at times I can only assume that's because of the source material available, its clear that as much care as possible has been put into letting Carlos' art in here shine.

The page count is slight at 60 odd pages, but again you can only work with what you have and this series didn't last too long in Battle. The tale itself packs a lot into the limited page count, as the compacted storytelling of comics of this era really comes into play for better or worse. El Mestizo, the slave freed and turned gun for hire roams across Civil War torn America playing for both sides as his needs for justice tell him.

The story draws heavily on 'A fist full of dollars' as our hero plays both sides to get to the result he wants. The tight storytelling means things move an at brisk, thrilling pace, though little has room to develop and be fleshed out. As said its very of it time but the story is fun, effectively crafted 70s kids comic fare.

The star is of course the art with Carlos Ezquerra drawing ever page and from the very first page showing a keen sense of what makes a western work. Again the compacted style doesn't let the art sing as much as it would in 2000ad with 10 plus panels to a page but it really is a delight on the eye. Particularly the later parts were Carlos seem to stretch out with his style a little more. With images drawn 'in negative' and more space allowed for some dramatic page design and layouts. Its wonderful stuff and boy does Carlos do a good horse!

Its a really nice look back and its a real shame we didn't get more of this stuff as a fan of westerns I'd have lapped up more adventures as the war ends in the last part and El Mestizo decides to go back to Mexico as there's always a war brewing there.

General / Dredd Epics Ranked - Play-offs
« on: 05 April, 2021, 06:55:20 AM »
Okay so based on some comments and feedback I’ve decided to make a change to how we allocate places 20 - 5 and its going to work a little something like this. In this vote we’ll split the losers of the ‘Round of 16’ into two halves by a vote.

Top 4 here will play-off with Epics who lose in the Quarters for positions 12 - 5

Bottom 4 will play-off against the Epics currently ranked 20-17 to give us positions 20-13

Hope that makes sense - if not just roll with it!

Look at the list of 8 Dredd stories below and tell me your top three:

1 (your favourite of the 8) will get 3 points
2 (your 2nd fav) will get 2 points
3 (your 3rd fav) will get 1 point

Seed 6 Terror / Total War Progs 1392-1399, 1407-1422

Seed 7 Mandroid

Seed 8 Titan /Enceladus Progs 1862-1869, 1924-1928, 1940-1947

Seed 12 Oz - Progs 545-570

Seed 13 The Pit - Progs 970 - 999

Seed 14 The Cursed Earth - Progs 61 - 85

Seed 15  The Day the Law Died - Judge Cal - Progs 86 - 108

Seed 16 Machine Law - Progs 2024-2029 and 2115-2122

Voting will close on the morning of Wednesday 7th April and we’ll have a new Play-off ready for Thursday morning with any luck…

General / Day of Chaos vs Oz - Dredd Epics Ranked - Better! H2H Rd 8
« on: 01 April, 2021, 06:57:07 AM »
As Tour of Duty reworks The Cursed Earth and The Day the Law Died so seed 5 Day of Chaos went on to recreate Apocalypse War… well okay, okay in my mind only then… Oz has two letters in its title and two main strands to it tale… okay okay look I’ve churned these intros out and I doubt any bugger bothers to read them, all you need to do is look at the title and you know what you do after that… so sometime they get ropey - sue me… ahem…

Dredd isn’t really the star attraction in either of these Wagner classics. Has the 16th Seed had the time and distance to be properly evaluated yet? Will it rise in folks minds as we re-read it and take on board the wonderful masterclass in craft it is at times? Even when it has though could it beat what is surely the popular choice for best Dredd story ever… that is if it is indeed a Dredd tale… or an Epic. These are factors you must juggle with.

Opposite ends of the spectrum in many ways these two. Seed 11 an imagination spanning flight of fantasy across multiple landscapes and mindscapes, but how well does it hand together? 6th seed is a tight grounded (well as anything in Dredd is!) action thriller. Deeply set in the world of police action and terrorism… but terriorists opposed to the system that crushes their humanity?
