Wow I mean i normally really enjoy this podcast but you are on fire at the moment. That chat with Mark McDermott is just wonderful. The passion that comes out of that chaps glorious stories. I could listen to him chat all night. And some of this artwork - well just astonishing of course. I'm not the biggest fan of Stan and Jack's FF (I know, I know call myself a comics fan - I much prefer Jack's DC work freed of Stan... anyway...) but that page is burnt onto the back of my retinas. Just amazing and its hard to imagine it being own by someone more deserving.

Poor ol' Fox has got a lot to live up to!

VOTING CLOSED

One Epic started strong, very strong and after that while the other Epic picked up votes and momentum at a similar rate that blistering start meant there was no coming back and half of Mega City One, the whole of Easter Meg 1 and an entire peace loving planet innocent of any involvement look aghast as you take such pleasure in

The Apocalypse War (not forgetting Block Mania)

which brought their end as it took top spot - I don't think to many folks surprise. Necropolis was probably the only epic that could have challenged it and  honesty it didn't come close and has to settle for a very respectable 2nd spot. So with that, I'm afriad to say  It's...it's OVER... well except not quite.

As we often moan about every good Epic (why do I keep putting that with a capital?!?) needs to have epilogues to give it real importance. Well this tourney wasn't about top spot, or crowning the winner it was about stern and justified correction of a brilliant man gone wrong. So join me Monday as we look at the full rankings - and do some analysis of how much we've had to sort that damned list that inspired all this from Alex F. Which epics have moved, how much have they moved and how, as the week progresses, how that compares to the correct ranking (that being the one I did) and how that compares to this 'crowdfunded' one.

Oh and I'll be introducing the next tourney  which is pretty close to being ready.

This is the cheapest I could find it (I have no moral compass when it comes to comics!)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Frank-Miller/e/B000AP9LKU?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2&qid=1619125252&sr=8-2

Here's the video I watched - yes I watched all 20 minutes of this WHILE ONH HOLIDAY WITH MY FAMILY which haunted my dreams until it broken me

I've only gone and done it... I don't learn me. I've owned Frank Miller DD stuff in maybe 3 formats to date. Original comics (well most of them). Sold.

The old omnibus - Sold.

Now have them digital.

Then I see them available in a lovely trade collection box set. They really looked super. But they were expensive and I do have this weird love hate relationship with the Miller run BUT this really was a complete set of EVERYTHING with a glorious companion book and where as the omnibus was uncomfortable to read this has the neatness of an omnibus but in a nice to read format AND all the Electra stuff  and everything.

Its beautiful.

But I didn't need it so I left it for about a week and half cos there was no way I needed to buy this...

... it smells nice too let me tell you ... and well ya know I got it at a cheaper price... and I can sell my trades of the stuff I have physically still... and it'll become saleable when I decide I don't need this... again...

... oh God I'm sorry... wish this was lovely boxset of the Nocenti run that I could justify...

Maybe the next sketch competition should be 'Finish a current 2000 AD strip in one frame'...

That would certainly be fun - get an entry in and you never know you could decide it!

Blimey, there's a lot of idiots on this forum, eh? What do you mean I forgot to vote!?

Tour of Duty.

Well I'm going with the thought that the cool kids always love the under-appreciated stuff. Tour of Duty = Throwing Muses!

12
Well its taken me a while to pluck up the courage to make the call here and it goes without saying that the quality is just astonishing this time around. I mean its always good but WOW folks have exceeded themselves.

However vote we must so:

1st - Tomwe 02 - seriously Tomwe could have sweep the board but I limited myself to one and I just love the expressions on this one so plumped for this.

2nd - Bolt-01 - I mean we knew what was coming - we didn't know it would he that good!

3rd - Woolly #1 - Woolly is such a talent and this one made me laugh too

HM - well I could go everyone but I'll go Pictsy cos I can't quite believe I couldn't find a slot for one of your wonderful selection

and Pete Wells - cos everything is better with added Pete Wells.

Just fantastic stuff around.

13
Last call folks but looking its possible that either Apocalypse War or Necropolis to catch City of the Damned and any final votes today could settle top spot so get um in and I'll count um up in the morning.

VOTING CLOSED

Well this one was close, but towards the end a surge in wrong answers drove the 3rd placed Epic

Judge Child

into an unassailable lead leaving the best Dredd Epic Tour of Duty languishing in an under appreciated 4th place. Only two places to decide and we'll have the full list and ANALYSIS can begin...

Decent Meg under a lovely cover.

Dredd a solid opener, not immediately up to Niemand's standard but lets see where it goes.

Megatropolis is the absolute highlight of the issue and right up with Niemand's usual standards. Action, intrigue and frankly quite stunningly good art. A wonderful tale, setting very robust foundations for more tales to come and we know we get more - so can't wait.

Mike Dowling gives astonishing art for Devlin Waugh, he just gets better and better and Ales Kot is building a fantastic long form tale that seems to be heading towards an exciting crescendo though these strong shorts. Looking forward to seeing this one develop.

Is that Star Scan meant to be Devlin? Its a good picture but ifs it is mr Waugh it utterly misses the mark alas.

Diamond Dogs again great art, this time by Warren Pleece the story defo has potential but lets see where it goes.

Deliverance cuts to the chase after a brief pause for reflection. Exciting but arguably a little weaker as a single episode as it cuts the creepy and unsettling for out and out gore and violence. Will work when the piece is a whole and certainly sets up a very exciting finale.

Texrt pieces are solid and the next part of the encyclopedia shows that no one planed the space for each entry well at all. I hope this get a more refined and planned second draft as it has such potential.
