Alternatively, we could just have a thread where people post 'this week, I'm mostly reading...' and can mention other books they've got lined up, and make a recommendation of a great book they read in the last 12 months.

I'm always keen to get some ideas for new stuff to read.

ming - who's half way through Iain M. Banks' Against a dark background (again)
lined up: various Raymond Chandler and the Saki complete short stories
recommended: Humanity: a moral history of the 20th century, by Jonathan Glover

Not the best cover in the world, by any means, but a favourite of mine is Prog 244 (Ace Trucking; 'Hit them jackers with the old blazooga biff', etc), for the simple reason that my brother had a picture printed in it, and as a nipper I was well impressed by that.  Subsequently, someone wrote in and complained that he'd copied it (which he had), and he was sent a Rigellian hotshot!  Yeeouch!

Trout - is that postcard book the one with the -ahem - 'Purple Hood'?
If so, a nice book, and I remember thinking the same thing about Bob Monkhouse - quite a surprise, to say the least.

Off Topic / Re: Dreams

My all time great dream was while working on the Canary Islands (big bits of which have suddenly fallen into the sea in millennia gone by).

Briefly: night, on a big ship, looking back at the island with towering cliffs, big storm, huge waves, wind, ship all over the place, ship starts to sink.

Waves crashing against the OTHER side of the island, but splashing all the way over to the side I can see; the island then starts to sink.  Island sinks completely, boat sinks completely, then I'm just swimming about at night in a calm sea, beautiful starry sky but no land anywhere.

Swam around for a while and then got picked up by some kind of hospital ship complete with nurses, blankets and hot soup.  Woo-hoo!

General / Progs 1 and 2 with gifts
02 April, 2004, 11:21:18 PM
Hello all,

I just noticed the first 78 progs, including progs 1 and 2 with gifts, on e-bay, going cheap (?200-ish, with 2 days left).  I'd bid, but I'm skint.  Just thought I'd spread the word.

If we are comparing CJ's to PM's, then maybe Volt is closest to Iain Duncan Smith, the PM who never was?

26 March, 2004, 09:17:24 PM
Hello all.

I've got a small gap in my Megazine collection (i.e. I've missed the last 9 years); any suggestions for hight points or 'must have' runs?
Ebay here I come.

Probably, Huffster.
I would definitely have disappeared behind the sofa if that thing had attacked Tom Baker when I was a nipper.
Giant rats were bad enough.

General  - Grasshoppers was a good guess, but I was mostly a beetle dude.  Plus some tick stuff and now - ahem - giant marine arthropod crustaceans.

But not the ones in the link, unfortunately.
