Title: The Commissions Thread
Post by: hippynumber1 on 13 July, 2013, 10:50:42 am
With an increasing number of people commissioning pieces directly from artists it's about time they had a thread of their own.  To get the ball rolling then, here's my Kev Hopgood commission - the brief I gave him was simply 'Dredd & Tanner in a 1980s style buddy cop movie poster'.  Kev produced 2 pieces, largely due to me being an arse (REALLY sorry Kev).  He did an A3 landscape, inked with no text and a portrait, ink wash with text.

Great idea, Mark. They didn't really have a natural home on the forum. That Kev Hopgood is grand - I very much like the Dredd pose.

I'm cross-posting my Leigh Gallagher Dredd sketch here, in case others don't follow the Original Art thread, but are interested in what artists will do for commissions.

Hopefully Mr chiefy2shoes sees this thread and will post some of his forthcoming pieces once he receives them. I'm looking forward to his Ben Willsher in particular...

Yep, The Chief has a couple up his sleeve. I have the Ben Willsher line-up piece and the possibility of a Cliff Robinson single figure commission as well but that one won't be until September (birthday present and all that jazz)

I won't clog up the thread with too much non 2000 ad stuff but did want to post this one. It's a Guardians of the Galaxy commission by Dave Stokes. Two landscape A3's and a portrait A4 totalling 105cm x 29.7cm. It's a beast. It's just been coloured by Simon Gough but I can't show that just yet. (he asked me to hold off posting it online until he finishes another colour job he's doing for a piece that was commissioned before mine. It's great though and I'll add it here when I get the go A-okay). If anyone knows a good place to get it printed, any help is appreciated.

Especially for Simeon, and apologies for those that have seen it before, here's my Gallagher commission. Brutal Sov justice!

Echo The Hipster on that one, Chief, that dude looks brutal! Fabulous GotG as well - will look awesome in colour!

Albion - lovely Holden and Robinson. There's some work in that there Robinson - do you know how long it took Cliff to do?

I can't remember how long it took Cliff but it took a few months.
He is fantastic to deal with and he really enjoyed doing it too.

Absolutely brilliant thread to start Mark  ....Take a bow, Sir... :D

Some wonderful commissions up already....
An amazing Cliff Robinson 'Minty' piece....Albion.....Just awesome, and the detail !!....Well done on that one !!..
Also really liking the Leigh Gallagher,  Dredd 'sketch' SimeonB.....If that's just a 'sketch' I'm a monkeys' uncle !!!...Just Brilliant !!
Mr blackmocco.....Words fail me on your Kevin O'Neill  Nemesis piece.....You Lucky, lucky man !!!...
I imagine Hippynumber1 is already 'lusting' after that as he's quite partial to a bit of Nemesis....

I'm adding my Mongrol commission piece by the amazingly talented ( and member of this forum ) Bob Molesworth who did this for me after I saw it in the March Art Competition........Needless to say it won that Months' competition amidst some spectacular entries.......His entry was digital,  but he kindly agreed to do me a fully hand painted version,  based on his digital line drawing.......and I love it !!

Really looking forward to seeing more commissions....but I'm afraid the 'wallet' might suffer when I see the standard of commissions available....
Cheers

Hadn't seen that piece before, Ming...
And big thanks for posting that link to allow us to read blackmoccos' 'background' story about it ....
Great stuff.....

It's also very reassuring to know that other people also do 'react' strangely,  when they meet / speak to someone whose work they have admired greatly for years....

Nice piece Bob - and Bob  :)

I guess it's not strictly a commission, but this is along the same lines as Bob's. I asked Skullmo to have this piece off him the moment he showed me the roughs. And fortunately, he agreed to part with it! It is his entry to the June Art Comp and it now sits proudly in my collection. The Burning Man, a strip that time forgot (but not Ben Willsher, who also pays homage to the story in "The Skinning Room"). How it didn't win, well I just don't know, but the standard in June was phenomenal...

I'm sure Skullmo is open to commission ideas  :D

That's a very nice piece by SkullmoSimeonB.
I liked it in the competition,  but I had never even heard of The Burning Man before, and doesn't 'fit in' with what I'm collecting....but it's still a great piece of artwork....And done 'old style' too !!
There are some amazingly talented artists in this forum.......and there have been some breath taking entries...I'll be watching the Art Competition entries closely,  and if I see something I really like I'll be asking if they are 'up' for doing a commission...
Support our local talent, so to speak...... :D
Thanks as well for the info on how to post pictures SimeonB....as you can see it worked great!!
Cheers...

What a great thread !!

Thanks Ming. It's weird reading my own background to it. I had gotten divorced around that time and had almost convinced myself, completely stupidly, that my ex-wife might have taken it as some kind of f-u. I was so delighted when I found it again. Don't think I don't appreciate how special it is. That's me head Nemesis is holding. "Could be worse". It now hangs over my desk in the house inspiring me when I forget how to draw. (That happens a lot.)

Fucking hell, Mick - if there's a comic fan equivalent of the Bling Ring (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4LzhgExvrc) keeping tabs on your whereabouts via social media, that's going to be robbed the next time you post a picture of your Egg McMuffin on facebook. You should have married the girl who delivered that wee beauty.

Y'know, here's the worst part: I broke her heart about a month later when I moved to Los Angeles and she stayed in Dublin. THEN my now ex-wife hated this artwork because it set such a high benchmark for presents. Hahaha!

In other news actually related to this thread: I'm on Mick McMahon and Eduardo Risso's waiting list for commissions. I've already spoken to Mick and figured out what's going to happen there. Probably won't be til next year as he's busy but I did ask if he'd consider revisiting this bad boy:

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee49/blackmocco/Screenshot2013-07-14at93402AM_zps91b66c7b.png) (http://s233.photobucket.com/user/blackmocco/media/Screenshot2013-07-14at93402AM_zps91b66c7b.png.html)

As for Risso, same thing - he's very busy and I haven't discussed anything with him yet but I've always thought he'd be perfect as a Dredd artist so pretty excited to see what he comes up with.

I'll open with this from Huy Truong and yes, there ain't a JUDGE in sight!!!

I saw Huy's work at one of the cons and his portrait pictures was phenomenal. I also noticed an Iron Man cover commission that he did for a couple, for their wedding, with them both in it and it looked superb. That got me thinking and in the end I wanted this cover altered with the family in it. I also stepped down and let Sam be Johnny, seeing as I'd just grew the face fuzz.

At the moment I'm in deep thought about the next and this time it will be Judges!

Some amazing pieces of art here; Minty's Colin Wilson commission is beautiful.

I've posted this before (more than once, I know) but here it is again.  Brendan McCarthy's first (and only, as far as I know) private commission.  I think this will appear in the Best of Milligan & McCarthy book in September.

With a bit of luck there'll be some more commissioned stuff from a couple of people coming down the line; however, these artists are a busy lot so I'm not holding my breath...  ;)

Right, ye gits, it's showin' off time! I'll do this in order(ish of when I got in touch with artists, but then I'll group 'em by artist.)

My first ever was by my boyhood fave, Mr Ian Gibson. While some were McMahon, and some were Bolland, I was all about the Gibson. I asked for me being arrested by Dredd, with Anderson looking on...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commgibsonsmaller.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commgibsonsmaller.jpg.html)

I loved it but got a bit sick of people saying that I didn't look like me on it. I found this distracting, hence the birth of Pete Wells Block in subsequent commissions (and elsewhere!) A few months later Ian got in touch and said he wasn't keen, so did me this A2 beauty cheap...

Shortly after I got my first Cliff Robinson - Dredd vs Death at Pete Wells Block on Deadworld. It's a stone cold classic...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commCliffsBlogVersion.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commCliffsBlogVersion.jpg.html)

Over the years this led to the Dark Judges series, starting with my fave dark judge, Mortis...

Then Judge Fear (with me in it - I broke my rule of not being in commissions 'cos Cliffs' idea was so cool...)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commclifffearfnished.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commclifffearfnished.jpg.html)

And finally Judge Fire, which I asked my family to get me for my 40th last year.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commCliff40thsmaller.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commCliff40thsmaller.jpg.html)

After my first one from Cliff, I got this beauty from Chris Weston. He did it in about four days  :o It has made an appearance in the Prog and was the inspiration for an Edmund Bagwell Zarjaz cover...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commchriswDreddDeathcolour.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commchriswDreddDeathcolour.jpg.html)

I went through a phase of getting bits and bobs from Davis Millgate, he's a nice lad and does a cracking Mean and Dredd. Here are a few, starting with, of course Sinister Dexter as he's their co-creator...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commasindex.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commasindex.jpg.html)

Always loved this...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commdavmDreddlawmastercoloured.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commdavmDreddlawmastercoloured.jpg.html)

Dredd, Death and Mean...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commdavemdreddMeanandDeath.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commdavemdreddMeanandDeath.jpg.html)

This was gonna be fully painted but Dave got a computer games gig...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commdavemmean.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commdavemmean.jpg.html)

There are a load more Millgates on my CAF gallery.

I got pally with Patrick Goddard and got this blighter...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commpatrickcommish.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commpatrickcommish.jpg.html)

And my missus secretly got me this for Christmas...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/comapatdreddpete.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/comapatdreddpete.jpg.html)

When I left one of my jobs my staff had a whip round and got me this wonderful PJ Holden commission. Their names are on the judge badges on the back...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commPJCommishfinal.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commPJCommishfinal.jpg.html)

I chased Si Fraser for years and finally got this wonderfully designed Dredd...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commsifDredd1.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commsifDredd1.jpg.html)

And a Dante...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commsifDante1.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commsifDante1.jpg.html)

I love a bit of Karl Richardson and thought he'd do a mean Mean. I wasn't wrong...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commkarlrdreddmeanhirez.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commkarlrdreddmeanhirez.jpg.html)

Then last summer I got this fully painted powerhouse, it's stunning in the flesh!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commkarlrDreddandzombies4pete.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commkarlrDreddandzombies4pete.jpg.html)

Few artists have excited me on their initial strip than Tiernen Trevallion. He was born to do Fink and didn't disappoint...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/comm05finkfinish.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/comm05finkfinish.jpg.html)

I got this from Jon Haward:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/comm2Hawardcommissionjpg.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/comm2Hawardcommissionjpg.jpg.html)

Dave Taylor was a loooooooong wait but worth it in the end...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commdavePwDreddwee1.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commdavePwDreddwee1.jpg.html)

I asked Cat Sullivan to do a recreation of Kev Walker's Prog 750's ABC Warriors cover in his Droid Life Style, it's ace!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/Wellsy/commcatlowscanrevised1.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Wellsy/media/commcatlowscanrevised1.jpg.html)

Next up, Happy Shrapnel himself, Colin MacNeil. I'd been hassling Colin for years so it was great when he finally agreed. I asked for Dredd vs Mechanismo Mk 1 robots and he gave me an undead horde of Mk1s in Pete Wells Mech Wrecking Yard, mind boggling!

Wow. I think that just about sums it up, Pete. The stakes just got raised in the War of the Commissions :D

If I had to choose a favourite, it would be the painted Dredd on Lawmaster by Mr Millgate. Quite fancy one of those myself!

Thanks for posting them!

As you can see, I got really bitten by the commission bug so much that it completely eclipsed buying original artwork. There's a bunch of nice memories associated with pretty much every one of those pieces and it's cool dealing directly with the artists. Knowing that all the cash goes directly to them is aces too!

I NEED a Henry Flint commission in my life though :'(

While there's a load of fantastic comissions here one that stands out for me is the David Millgate Sinister Dexter. Drawing like that I'd love to see him back on the strip he created.

Personally I find the comissions all that more special. It's great seeing all these pieces knowing that they're truely one of a kind that simply aren't available elsewhere.

Though you could make a impressive little artbook of purely your stuff. Very impressive !

And all thanks to Mark, and of course to John Cooper, i now have this commission based on the Last Invader story from Prog 298-99. Really pleased that John could re-visit this story (a particular fave Post-Apocalypse War story). I asked John to create a image that didnt actually appear in the story - Engels getting the drop on Dredd, as a kinda nod to those covers that sort of implied stuff that never appeared in the actual strip. And John's cover to Prog 298 sort of felt like that - to me at any rate. And pleased with the results!

Now i must admit that i used to be slightly sniffy about John Cooper, basically because he took over from the mighty Joe Colquhoun on Johnny Red - a particular fave of mine. How dare he!  :-[

But ive since learnt the error of my ways, and over the years ive come to see that period of 2000ad that featured the new bright things alongside old school talent as the best time.

Lovely John Cooper, JJ. You and the Hipster have got a couple of cracking pieces there. And I think I even remember this story too from my CCF recent read!

Ah, the Johnny Red debate... Well, I came to Battle in about 1981-ish and I think Cooper had already taken over drawing duties then - so his style is my Johnny Red.

I would like to know how I would go about commissioning a competent-professional artist to draw my character for the Werewolf forum game here,  Seneca Rises! (http://senecarises.org/)

Which I mentioned earlier on the Games thread  here! (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,38847.0.html)

You might like to read about it there to get some idea of what it's about and look at the other peoples art I've put up there to see what I like already.

I'm quite willing to pay artists for this.

I will give a accurate character description and send some other pictures I've been using for guide lines to anyone that agrees they want to do this.

Love to do this myself, but my own art skills were never really developed and if they ever were. They've gone rusty.
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: hippynumber1 on 03 August, 2013, 02:21:15 pm
Pick an artist who you would like to draw your character and then approach them - facebook or artist's own website would probably be easiest.  Some artists will only take on characters they've helped create while others will give anything a go so be prepared for disappointment! Alternatively, and probably a damn sight cheaper, would be to have a look at the art competition threads on here and ask one of the very talented folk who enter if they'd be interested...

Title: Re: The Commissions Thread

Again, that depends on who you pick and what you want.  I know, for eg, that Leigh Gallagher will do a single figure, A4, no background for £55 (if he'd take it on) while McMahon starts at £250 (and he wouldn't do it anyway!) Guys on here? Who knows...
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: Simon Beigh on 03 August, 2013, 02:45:46 pm
ThryllSeeker - if you don't particularly mind about it being a published artist, post a link to your brief on the Creative Commons (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/board,26.0.html) Board and a rough description of what you want - see if anyone is willing to give you a quote to take it on.

If Leigh Gallagher would take it on, he'd be very good at this sort of subject I would think, and his commission prices aren't astronomical... Trouble with droids is that if Tharg comes calling, then commissions hit the "To Do" pile pretty quick and you could be waiting months before you get it.

I was reading through the rules when I read this one and I might have hit a wall.......

Quote
Business and Money

Please don't hire, lease, sell or buy stuff in this forum. You've got the classifieds forum for that if people are really interested in your work.

Further to that, this is not a recruiting zone endorsed by 2000 AD or Rebellion. Posting your work here does not qualify as a submission to 2000 AD, although you can find details of how best to do that on the 2000 AD Submissions page.

That's sound a bit like what I want to do.

I would like to hire a artist. I think it says No! I can't do this here and that I should go to the Classifieds Forum if I want to hire a Artist?

Is that correct?

 :-\

Hi ThryllSeekr,
I would have a think about what hippynumber1 or SimeonB advise........
Posting a short brief in the Classifieds Section would probably be best on here, or if you have seen an artist on this forum whose work you really like ( and there are loads of great artists on here ) and feel he or she would be best suited for your brief,  just get in touch via a pm and ask.....
Otherwise,  visit your favourite artists' blog or facebook page and ask.......

I got my commission done,  via this forum after seeing Bob Molesworths' artwork in the March Art competition,  and got in touch via a pm and arranged it from there....
I also know that if you have a particular artist in mind,  several members on this forum can put you in touch with them.....
Good luck and looking forward to seeing the 'end result'....
Cheers

Leigh Gallager you say, and the artist turns out to be a guy. Though, I was looking at pictures of a comely woman signing Defoe graphic novels with Pat Mills and thought the artist was her.

I would like to get that straight before asking, though. It could be big social faux-pas to get that wrong.

Leigh Gallagher? Not really sure about them, though your quote of spending just $55 sound right to me ;)

Mike McMahon! Now getting a famed Slaine artist like him or the well known Slaine artists to do the work for me would be a dream come true. Though, alas no he won't, you say :( Anyway, I would be too afraid to pull them away from art duties on Slaine: Book of Scars!

Have they done so already?

Are there Werewolves in Defoe as well?

I've also been wondering if it 's true they did the full colour covers for Defoe as well as the interior. To be polite about their work! I say the covers look better.

Ahem. Obviously no one's willing to spoil the magic for you, but that's Leigh Gallagher himself. From this very moving blog entry (http://leighgallagherart.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/message-for-niki.html) where he proposed to his partner Niki. By all accounts a pretty smashing manoeuvre. Although, agreeably Anthony Stewart Head could also be called the most handsome man in his own field.

Context is key!

Readers of my Megazine Odyssey (http://judgedreddmegazine.blogspot.co.uk/) blog may recall in the Meg 211 (http://judgedreddmegazine.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/meg-211-portrait-of-ssserial-killer.html) review I wrote the following:

"If I meet D'Israeli at a comic con and can get a sketch off him, Raptor would be my choice. He's a brilliant little character who 'speaks' using no vowels..."

So I was at the Forbidden Planet signing of Trifecta last night, and D'Israeli turns up! I pluck up every ounce of courage and ask for a sketch of the super fast little killing machine - and I get one! Wahoo! Matt was very apologetic for the rubbish drawing, saying he had only had 4 hours sleep the night before because he'd been traveling. I say that pish and nonsense - it's a great little sketch - and captures Raptor very well.

It was interesting how Matt penciled the sketch first, then went over with pens. You can just make out the pencil rough in the photo.

Well, this puppy's on it's way from Spain to sunny Los Angeles as we speak. Delighted. Haha! I'd originally asked Carlos if he's be interested in drawing Golgotha and Hammerstein to which he replied "Uff! I can't do that." I moved on to Johnny and Wulf relaxing after a hard day's bounty-hunting and this beauty materialized. (I asked for them to be drinking Guinness, by the way. Seconded. It's taken him a long time to get as good as he is now.

He's slowed up a bit now, but here's a commission I got from Mick McMahon. His Junkyard Demon" is one of THE strips from old skool Dr Who magazine. He captured the cranky creepiness of the 60's cyberman better than even the actual TV show...

Johnny and Wulf relaxing after a hard day's bounty-hunting and this beauty materialized. I asked for them to be drinking Guinness, by the way. You can take the boy out of Ireland etc...

Aye, but did you ask for them to be buried balls deep in each other too? I knew all that bare chested log choppin' that went on when they retired to Smiley's World was communicating subtext - those guns (and their positioning (!)) have never seemed so playfully suggestive. A couple of crackers, but McMahon's Tinribs steals the prize. Thanks for the generously sized image, Graff - Mick's stuff is actually even more unfathomably brilliant when you can see the individual pen marks and how it was drawn.

That Nemesis commission is fried gold. Wonderful.

He's slowed up a bit now, but here's a commission I got from Mick McMahon (Should this go in the non-2000AD art thread instead? Not sure...)

Mick's 'Junkyard Demon" is one of THE strips from old skool Dr Who magazine. He captured the cranky creepiness of the 60's cyberman better than even the actual TV show...

Superb choice. I spotted that one straight away, very nice!

You can take the boy out of Ireland but etc...)

It seems like absolutely bloody ages since you commissioned this! Lovely!

I asked Karl Richardson a little while ago for a "Dredd head" commish. It's an iconic pose, and I'd like a few art droids to let me have their interpretation of it. Anyway, he found time this week and here it is, done in pencil (which I think is his favourite medium):

Gotta love the way he has got my name into the shadowing on the helmet!

Another very nice commission, SimeonB...... :D
And a very nice touch to have a 'Simeon Brewer block' showing in the reflection on Dredds' helmet.....

That's a very fine collection you are building up mate...

A great commission! Did you ask for the helmet reflection - it's a great idea!

Post by: Simon Beigh on 21 September, 2013, 07:09:39 am
Yeah, really weak synthi-beer.. ;)

I didn't ask for it, it came out of Karl's head. I just asked for a Dredd head, side-on pose looking left and for his interpretation. I didn't anticipate such a brilliant idea. So that's the gauntlet thrown down to other artists who I commission!

Just in time for the bumper book of Zenith fun to arrive, here's a recent commission.  Steve Yeowell revisiting pretty much my favourite scene from Phase III.

This, plus a few versions / pencils are now in my CAF gallery and I'll add a larger scan soon.  I've also added the names of all the characters but one; any ideas who the mystery lady at three o'clock could be?

Remarkable stuff. Re: the leady - the proximity to Lux and the hairstyle suggest Spook? That said, it's been ages since I've read it, so I really can't remember much about her involvement in Phase 3 at all. Actually, maybe it's Ruby?

Doesn't seem to be Spook (she appears with a beret and a stripy top in these scenes) or the rejuvenated Ruby, either:

From the man himself. Not exactly holding my breath but when I initially spoke to him about doing this one he had mentioned he wouldn't be able to get to it until the end of the year. Looks like he found a window...? Doesn't bother me, either way. Well worth waiting for.

Dunno; in February I was told 'The finished art should be ready by the end of April' so all bets are off as far as timing estimates go.  With no idea how many pieces Mick has committed to there's no real way of knowing, but there's no hurry as far as I'm concerned, anyway!

In a bizarre instance of synchronicity, two weeks before I commissioned a birthday pressie for my brother from Leigh Gallagher my girlfriend had already been chatting to Ian Gibson.  She told him that photography is a hobby of mine and he clearly took great delight in drawing a Halo Jones photoshoot with me using an old box brownie! Now, to me, the lascivious look on my face and Halo's apparent fury indicate that perhaps I've asked her to do something I shouldn't have!  :-\

So, I'm off to visit a friend in Cumbria at the weekend and it just so happens to coincide with the Lake International Comic Festival. Some good guests are going to be there including Wagner, Ezquerra and Fraser. I contacted Si to see if he had time for any pre-con sketches and he kindly said he'd do one on the plane over. He's just sent me this pic of what I'll be collecting on Saturday. The speech refers to the fact I'm getting married in a couple of weeks. Sorry guys that I couldn't get picture uploading to work... I'm not very good with message boards.

I have been on a bit of a commission quest with Dredd lately and I can't believe how lucky I have gotten. Sometimes things seem to just fall into line.

My first Dredd piece was by the criminally underrated Colin Wilson. Anyone who has met Colin would agree that he is simply one of the nicest guys on the planet.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1030394 (http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1030394)

Second piece again was by Colin. He puts his all into every commission. I do actually feel quite spoiled to get two amazing commissions.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1063476 (http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1063476)

Lucky for us Australians, John Higgins is currently with us in Australia for Supanova expo and I will be meeting up with him in Adelaide this weekend to pick up my pre show commission piece. Anyone interested should seek out John, again I swear all the nicest guys work on Dredd.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1062585 (http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1062585)

Last but certainly not least, not by a long shot, I fulfilled a dream of mine... Never did I imagine I would be able to get a commission from the creator of my favourite comic character. But surely enough, I got in contact with the one and only King Carlos Ezquerra and he was happy to do a piece for me.

This weekend I am hoping to maybe add a quick Dredd from Ashley Wood also. He doesn't tend to do many con sketches but maybe I will get lucky :)

Hi guys, Does anyone know if Brendan Mcarthy is open to commissions?  If so is there a simple way to contact him.  I've recently been getting some great commissions and would love one from him.

This is one from Ben Wilsher, he did a bang up job of my favorite ABC warrior - shown here for the first time.

I don't thinks Brendan's that open to commissions to be honest.  The one he did for me a couple of years back* turned out to be the first he'd agreed to take on and I'm fairly sure he's not done any since then.  There's no public method for contacting him that I'm aware of (although he's on Facebook) but if you want me to drop him a line, send me a p.m.

Nice to bump into you in the flesh at Thoughtbubble, Chiefy....
Also really good to see your Lego figures of Six Pack and his Crew,  getting due respect from Mr McCrea at his table....
Hope the photos turn out great, he was a really nice guy to talk to, and has several very funny anecdotes about his earlier career and association with Garth Ennis as well.....Unfortunately a serious lack of cash meant I couldn't buy anything this year,  but John McCrea had an astonishing Rouge Trooper huge Splash page for sale that was one of the most awesome depictions of Rogue I think I've ever seen...
Cheers

Yeah, got to agree Link...
Mr McCrea seems to enjoy his time at these events enormously........Drawing ( awesomely ), chatting away about almost everything, posing for photos etc....An absolute gentleman.....
And his artwork, just incredible stuff !! ...He had several pages of Dredd / Mars Attacks x/overs for Sale that I really fancied, a glorious Dredd sketch, and the wonderful Rogue Trooper splash page that I would have loved, but serious lack of cash prevented any purchases this year...

Still a great Convention though and will definitely be back next year...

That goes hurtling past good, heads with neck breaking speed beyond great, swings right at astonishing and brushes past wonderazingible and other made up superlatives with ease and heads to some new land of glory that we mere morals will only ever witness second hand through the prism of works like that.

If that doesn't make any sense in summary I like it quite a bit!
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread

Gets better the more I look at it. Chuffed beyond words with this. If there's one thing I love as much as 2000AD, it's a bit of Mad Max. Not any sort of stretch for me to have them both breathing the same air. Saw MM2 a year after picking up my first prog (224, not that you asked) and had my brains boiled by both. When I heard Brendan was involved with Mad Max - Fury Road years ago I couldn't believe it. Two worlds collide! Hit him up last year about this. Don't think he does many commissions but think I intrigued him when I suggested this as a concept. Look at the mutiemen in the bottom left corner! Fucking awesome. Cannot wait to see this in the flesh and pore over it.

Don't think he does many commissions but think I intrigued him when I suggested this as a concept.

This is the third commission Brendan's agreed to, as far as I know.  My Strange Days one was first, then the Rogan Gosh piece I posted in 'The Strangeness...' thread and now this beauty.  Brendan puts a lot of work into these and although he doesn't agree to do many commissions the results are outstanding - you've definitely got something very special there.  Looking forward to seeing some more pics when you get it in hand - those colours are glorious...

Gruddammit!  I worked with Brendan on Fury Road for a couple of years, never thought to ask him whether he'd do something like that for me... how bloody stupid am I??

It's a lovely piece.  You lucky sod blackmocco!
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: blackmocco on 19 March, 2014, 11:13:53 pm
First off, any info you can leak to me via PM in regards to Fury Road would be greatly appreciated! Haha!

Secondly, Brendan asked me whether I wanted Mel or Tom and Humungus or Immortan Joe but we both decided nothing beats MM2 so that's where it went. In saying that, I'd have loved to see what he did with the Fury Road version.

Thirdly, if you got to work with the man himself Inky, I would counter that YOU are the lucky sod...!!!
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: inkymonkey on 20 March, 2014, 12:07:30 am
No leaky bits I'm afraid!  Other than the word on the streets is that it's "the best thing that George Miller has ever done".  If it's as good as MM2, I'll be very happy - if it's better, then it's going to have to be pure cinematic genius...  Fingers crossed!

But in terms of working with Brendan, yes, very lucky indeed.  And instructive.  And humbling!  Not many minds around like his.

This commission came about after talking to my friend Sefton Disney on Facebook. He's a fan of El Mestizo and because of him I recently read it for the first time and really enjoyed it.  I told him that I was thinking of getting a Johnny Alpha commission from Carlos and this wonderful picture was born from that.

Huge thanks to Carlos for doing this. I love it.

No. Pure coincidence on my part. The El Madito ad in the Prog appeared after I commissioned this.

Heh. I was thinking more along the lines of a homage to the original strip. Which, btw the way, looks rad. Would so love to read it but without a reprint in sight the chances are slim.

I did ask Carlos if the two characters were related, he said.....
"Originally was based on him, but no, only the shape."

Copyright for El Mestizo remains with Fleetway so the character can't be used anyway.

I was curious as well, after seeing that 'Thrills of the Future' piece in Prog 1874

Anything to do with the upcoming Grennie/ Carlos story, El Maldito?

Kinda a cross between El Mestizo, and the IKAN from Stronty, but getting back to your commission, Albion - Lovely stuff indeed. King Carlos hasn't disappointed with any of these.
Mmmm, I should ask about getting another....

It varies wildly between artist as to what you get and how much it costs! The best bet is simply to find someone who has a commission by an artist you like and ask them or, if possible, get in touch with the artist directly...

Good luck with that Hawkmonger - Leigh is indeed a star turn. A commission from him will be aces.
And don't forget King Carlos - who's on fire with his commission work.

For those wondering about prices, a good few of the droids have blogs, and the prices are listed for commissions, and a good few more are on Facebook - so sign up to Dale's 2000AD art page, if you haven't already, a good few are signed up to that.

I would have been posting a new commission up here myself today, but I missed the post,  :(  Ah well, tomorrow then,  :P

Quite honestly, I was blown away by this one. I knew he'd come up with something good, because, hey, he's Carlos, but this was above and beyond for me.

I'm not a big commissions guy, since it's the dynamism of the story on comics page that gets me; but look how he tells the story of this relationship in one 'panel'. I loved reading Harry Harrison and The Stainless Steel Rat books when I was kid, and I loved the 2000ad adaptation. And jeeez, I love this commission too. Ezquerra's a unique and absolute talent in comics. I'm not sure he gets enough general recognition for that...

Sauchie; I was pretty sure that the hadn't done a S Steel Rat Commission, plus I sent him a bunch of images of 70's movie posters (The Gauntlet, Our Man Flint, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot etc)...it doesn't hurt to get your artist juiced up for the job...

Hi there...
Apologies for this being my first post but I'm more of a reader/lurker than a poster, but I need some help please, if you don't mind?
I've decided at 39 years of age that after being a life long 2000ad fan I'm going to start getting commissioned art from my heroes, starting with the main man himself, Carlos Ezquerra.
Could someone kindly supply me with contact details please? Unfortunately/fortunately, I don't do facebook so any other form of contact would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Adam.

Right, I'm going to N.I.C.E next month and will be hoping to get a sketch form John McCrea. I already have the four Dark Judges as seen below.

I've now started getting some non Mega City 1 Judges. I have Hondo-Cit and Sino-Cit ones so far.

(http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x392/chiefy2shoes/HondoCitJudge-JohnMcCrea_zpsc2d4ed2a.jpg) (http://s1179.photobucket.com/user/chiefy2shoes/media/HondoCitJudge-JohnMcCrea_zpsc2d4ed2a.jpg.html)

Any suggestions on what I should go for next? Brit, Texas, Oz, Pan African, Arctic or perhaps a Vatican City Judge as seen in Crusade. Was he called an Inquisitor Judge? Any good reference pics would also be cool.

I've had no problems with the prints fading and they've all been washed at least 4 or 5 times each. Quality of material is comfortable as well. They do a more expensive shirt but the £5.99 one has worked out okay for me so far.

Not strictly 2000AD related, but a previous 2000AD artist...

My son Andrew and his fiancée Jemma are getting married shortly in Miami and honeymooning in Florida.  As they are both big Zombie / Walking Dead fans they are visiting the Walking Dead 'tour' in Orlando.

As a surprise wedding gift,  I approached Sean Phillips and asked if he would do a 'Zombified Wedding' portrait of them both..   He agreed, and asked that I send a photo of them and he would see what he could do.  The finished commission arrived last week and has now been framed and given to them at a celebration family meal tonight......They were absolutely delighted, as was I,  and I include the before and after pictures below.

Many, many thanks to the awesomely talented, and extremely nice bloke, Sean Phillips for what is an astonishing piece of work..
Cheers

I recently commissioned the wonderful Jesus Redondo to do a painted Nemesis 'cover' for me. I received it this week and it's stunning but before I show you that I'd like to share this - he included it as a 'Thank you' and has a lovely personal message written on the back. MASSIVE thanks to Rebellion's own Wiggz for organising this for me...

Despite the fact he's eschered her slightly, I am totally in love with that picture!

As soon as I found out that Jesus Redondo was taking commissions I knew I had to have one. After some thought (aka brief dithering) this is the brief I sent to him:

"In the 90s Titan were reprinting the Nemesis books and commissioning the artist for each book to paint an original cover. Sadly, Titan never reprinted the beautiful Bk II by Jesus Redondo. What I would like then is the cover to the collection that Titan never commissioned. A3 and painted if possible. Please..."

Painted in a mix of "liquid water colour mixed with gouache."

Huge thanks should go to Rebellion's own Sean 'Wiggz' for organising this for me. You Sir are a star and I would recommend everyone to email him now for some help with organising some Redondo gorgeousness!

Was SO thrilled to hear that Flesh was coming back. Not only coming back, but it'd be a direct sequel to my second favourite strip when 2000AD first started. It'll have Trans Time! It'll have cowboys! It'll have outlandish dinosaur gore! And, hopefully, great looking dinosaurs too.
Happily, James McKay really delivered on that front and, as soon as i read the first episode, i got in touch with the fella to see if he'd take part in my project.  Straight away i knew what i wanted: The now totally inaccurate, standing bolt upright, portly, big-headed Old One Eye going up against the totally accurate, brilliantly realised Gorehead.
James was up for it alright, but work pressure had meant it took a good while to see just what would happen when the two meet.
Fantastic isn't it?
But, who's going to win?

Dom Reardon kindly provided a cover for a special 2000AD-themed edition of the SF/fantasy/horror modelling magazine, Drone.
The publication has a fictional editor by the name of Dr One, a zombie-like character and my only brief to Dom was could the piece have him and the more fantastical characters from the Prog at that time that i could think of as being the most supernatural, figuring they'd be treading a middle line for readers tastes. So plumped for DEath, Deadlock and Nemesis.
Other than that, it was all down to Dom and here's he's coloured and B&W versions:

Cliff was a joy to deal with from start to finish when doing my "Dredd vs the Seventies" piece and an excellent example is how he contacted me to say sorry but one of the prelims had been slightly damaged.
He felt really bad about it and, to make up for it, said he'd do me an extra picture and would i rather know what it was or wait till the art arrived?
I'd had JPEG's of all stages of the commisssion so knew what i was getting there, so chose to wait and have a surprise.
And boy was i - a truly brilliant, evil take on Black Max and i was blown away and chuffed to bits.
What a great guy!

Prices vary wildly between artists and what you want from them and the size of the commission, colour, pencil, ink, painted, number of characters etc. I'm happy to tell you what I paid for specific commissions if you want to have a look at what I have (follow the link) and then PM me but the best bet is to decide what you want, who you want it from and drop them an e-mail.

Ah, that be Adam Eterno - middle ages hero, cursed not only to travel though time and be plopped down to have an adventure there before being whisked off again, but immortal as well. Except to gold, which he seemed to be threatned by in even more bizarre, ingenious and downright ways as the strip went on.

This was my first ever commission, brought about by me not having a clue what to get my Wife Christmas in 2004.
So i approached Ian Gibson at that years Dreddcon about him doing a piece teaming up Emma Peel (my Wife is a massive fan of the Avengers) and Jennifer Garner in Alias (she was deeply into that show at the time).
And this is what he came up with. Very much enjoyed the banter with Ian, not least his hilarious tirades on the oddness of Jennifer Garner's face and what a pig it was to try and capture it  :D

I really wanted Carl Critchlow for my "Someone Old, Someone New" project as i'm a massive fan of his incredibly fine linework.
So, got in touch with Carl and he said sure but i'd have to wait a while.
Straight up, i asked Carl if he would do for the modern character his Thrud, which seemed logical, and asked for a certain 70's person for the old one - who i won't name as hopefully he'll still be appearing in the project yet.
Carl said sure to Thrud, but would i mind if he chose the other side of the coin as he had something in mind?
Didn't mind that at all - half the fun of this project is the surprise of seeing what folk would come up with.
So, when the email came with an attached JPEG asking if it was okay came, it was a real thrill to sit there and open the file.
And what a thrill to see these three appear!
I absolutley LOVED the Three Bears when i were a nipper and i can't tell you how chuffed i am to have an original of them done by one of my favourite artists, along with a brillaintly awful pun.

A few years back, when Gerry Finley Day returned to Rogue Trooper, i straight away got on to Art Droid Staz Johnson to see if he'd like to depict Rogue in my "Someone Old, Someone New" project.
He was up for it and wanted to know who the "old" character would be?
I'd settled on Hellman, as i'd been a big fan of the fella in Action. Well, pre-watered down Action that is.
Staz said fine - but wouldn't he look kind of dull in just a black tank commanders outfit compared to Rogue?
And he suggested Major Eazy instead.
I'd discounted him because i'd planned to see if i could get Mr Ezquerra to do him (still do!), but agreed he had a point.
So, Staz took the Eazy route - and i'm mighty glad he did  :D

Post by: Mangamax on 06 January, 2015, 02:16:37 pm
With Black Max being my favourite ever British comics character, i had to get a commission of the fella at some point.
Figured there's two ways to go with Max - traditional war comic style or to play up the horror element.
Going the spooky route, i have a top three wish list of Dom Reardon, Frazer Irving and Leigh Gallagher, because of the stunning, moody B&W work they've produced over the years.
So i was thrilled that Dom was up for it. He didn't know the character and needed reference pics and i asked if i could have a full length shot with maybe a Bat in the background?
Dom said yup and that he also planned on putting a plane in there and could i supply some frames from the strip for reference.
Happy to do that and happier still to get this prelim before long:

Of course it was ok so i asked to carry on and the finished piece is below.
I wanted a dark, moody, supernatural take on the fella and Dom didn't disapoint.
Cheers Dom!

I was after Dom Reardon to add to my "Someone Old, Someone New" thing and i knew i wanted Demon Jenny to be the "new" one - Cabs Inc was in the Prog back then and she, out of all the characters, i felt really fitted in with bizarreness of many of the 70's characters that were popping up in the project.
But who's powerful enough to take her on?
I was thinking of Cursitor Doom, to match her supernatural side, but in the end i went with brute force and returned to Black Max for one of his Bats.
And here we are:

Very topical, and very nice. King Carlos hits it for six once again.

Just for asking; Is this commission A3 sized, eamonn?

Yup, A3 sized
Cost me £330 including courier service postage to UK

A3, is the way to go!
And a very reasonable price to pay, for something from the Master.

I definitely need to ask about getting another from him.

Wow. Amazing stuff as always from The King. Here's a commission I got from a random guy I found on deviantart (adhytcadelic) $35 for both b/w and colour images. They are digital files but I'll print them out on good paper.

The McMahon commissions in particular, just the best!

I’ve got a Dredd commission to upload…but still working on shrinking it down to an acceptable amount of KBs…

I'm not sure I'm uploading it quite right, but anyway...

I got the commission below for Christmas.

The scruffy fella, with the dubious reading material is the Ennis and Fabry creation 'Kev'.

I think I see what you're trying to do.

If you put the link for the picture (which you can get, for instance, by left clicking and selecting 'copy image location') between the tags [ img ] and [ /img ] (but without the spaces) you get a bigger version of the image appearing directly in your post instead of the clickable attachment.

And so...

Had a lovely troop in my old hometown yesterday, spying on the disreputables:

And was thrilled to pick up a commission i'd started rolling at the last Demoncon back in September.
I'd told Clint Langley about my "Batman 186" project, where i ask folks if they could recreate my favourite ever American cover in their own style.
He was up for it but was of course busy, but said he'd have it done by yesterdays bash.
As with my "Someone Old, Someone New" project, a massive thrill is when i don't get to see any thumbnails and get the surprise of seeing the finished piece.
So yesterday, Clint goes "I've changed things a bit, hope you'll like it?"
 Like it? I LOVE it!
Don't matter that its a recreation of the page, the whole point of the idea is an artist is given the idea and does their own take on it.
Its my favourite cover as i was 4 when it came out as i was fascinated and rather unsettled by the creepy lil' guy with the pointy nose and pudding basin haircut getting the better of my hero.
Clint's come up with a modern version that the grown-up me is equally fascinated/unsettled by - if DC Comics existed in the Twin Peaks universe, i reckon Clint's 186 could be found on the coffee table in the Red Room.

Not 2000AD but a 'kind of' commission none the less.

This was done for me by my son Andrew,  as part of a surprise 60th Birthday present..( The other surprise was a trip to Amsterdam ) ....It's me as one of The Boys.  He is not an artist,  but loves to draw and like me, loves comics and Graphic Novels.   Not bad,  I'm sure you will agree,  and a fabulous surprise.

The Boys is a tremendous 12 TPB volume series by Garth Ennis, about a Team set up to eradicate rogue Superheroes. As it's by Garth Ennis you know what to expect...Original artists were Darrick Robertson and John McCrea.
And before anyone asks I'm not the old guy in the top corner, I'm the one in the middle of the group holding a crowbar.

Thanks. Yeah Moloram is from Temple of Doom. I'm finding that prices for artist at cons (and pre con orders especially) seem to have skyrocketed over the last year or so. With that in mind I now tend to hit the perhaps less well known artists in a bid to save some funds.

Being a big G.I Joe fan and knowing that Keith Burns (The Boys, upcoming Johnny Red) is the master of aviation comics I decided to commission him to do me a reimagining of a scene form G.I Joe issue 34 which is basically a long dogfight between the Joe Skystriker and the Cobra Rattler. Here is the result. Needless to say I'm very pleased.

It's only a budding project, but here's the latest of my 'Dredd meets..' commissions, the theme being a 2000ad artist known for illustrating Dredd has him meeting another character the artist's also known for drawing - either from 2000ad or another comic.

Below, Dredd meets John Constantine of Hellblazer...by the superb John Higgins

That is a bt special. There's something so unique about Ian Kennedy's colour palette (terminology mine and possibly not currect!) it makes his painted work so vibrant.

Superb.

Great stuff, Mark!  Ian must be 84 or something now?  A shame he doesn't date the commissions to allow people to distinguish them from stuff he was putting out back the the 70s (the 1970s, not his 70s).

Stunning stuff indeed. Cover worthy if ever a piece was.

Mr Kennedy, along with Mr Redondo, seem to be living proof that exposure to Thrill Power keeps you on tip-top form.

And that's a cracking commission that Pete Wells has got as well. Very nice indeed. Hand drawn, or digital?
Either way it's a brilliant depiction of Death.

A general request for advice from my forum chums; any recommendations regarding the correct etiquette (if any) in contacting an artist about an 'old' commission?

Some background info; I commissioned the piece about three and a half years ago, and paid upfront (including postage).
I knew the artist was busy, and did state that I wasn't in a particular rush (which in fairness, I wasn't).
I've been in touch with the artist a few times since, and casually mentioned the commission twice, told both times it would be started ASAP. Fair enough I thought.
I haven't been in touch in over a year, and no sign of it. Not sure if I'd consider it good form to just email him directly on the topic or not.
It's an artist I really respect (obviously), so don't want to come across as that kind of guy.
Then again, it's been three and a half years. Not sure what to do!
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread

E-mail him directly, and ask him for a refund if he can't do it.
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: Steve Green on 15 March, 2016, 08:35:08 pm
Or you could possibly ask around on the comics art fb group run by Dale, it could be the artist has had other things going on, but 3+years is a long time to stall without an explanation.

What Steve said. You've paid some money already. It's perfectly appropriate to politely enquire whether it's a go or not. (He clearly doesn't need the rest of the money! Haha!)
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: Geoff on 15 March, 2016, 08:44:03 pm
I think it would be fair enough to email him directly about the piece. Some artists do agree to commissions in principle but it's years before they can get round to them, but they generally know this and so don't ask for money up front and leave you hanging.

Given that you've only really mentioned it casually he may not realize you're unhappy. Sending a polite respectful email along the lines of what you've put in your post may well clear everything up.
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: matty_ae on 15 March, 2016, 09:00:21 pm
Most artists would agree they work best to a deadline. i.e. even if they break the deadline, they've still started the work.

I would set a deadline even if its a bit of a fake.

Y'know "It my 40th birthday next month (wow we must have been first stalking about this when I was 37!), if you can't do the piece by then could you refund me so I can get a commission from a different artist"

So polite, say how long its taken but make the point and set a deadline.
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: Old Tankie on 15 March, 2016, 09:25:47 pm
Three and a half years!!!  And you have paid up front! He has either forgotten or you have been conned, either way you should get in touch and sort it out.
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: Spikes on 15 March, 2016, 09:55:48 pm
Good luck with resolving this, Rich. I hope you can get your art, or a refund, and sooner rather than later.

Yes, best option would be to ask outright what the actual score is. Be polite, but straight to the point. And get him to state a timeframe. You shouldn't be made to feel like you have to walk around on eggshells on this. I think you have been patient enough.

You do sometimes hear of tales of artists not delivering on pre-paid work, and that's the risk of paying up front. If an artist I approached asked for this, I'd most likely have to ponder whether Id be happy to do that.

Title: Re: The Commissions Thread

3.5 years is shameful, let's be honest.
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: ming on 16 March, 2016, 09:24:00 am
If it was me, depending on the original agreement, I'd have been dropping occasional gentle reminders after a few months, just to keep it on the artist's radar.  As time passed, frequency (and risk of being annoying) would have increased slightly until it got to the 'if you're unable to commit to doing this in the next couple of months we can call the whole thing off and can I have my money back please' stage.  I'd never have let things get to three years - that's just nuts.

I've only had a few commissions done (McCarthy, Yeowell, McMahon) besides some of the sketchbook pieces and nobody has ever asked for money upfront (although I've offered it and been refused).  There's a lot of trust involved in this game so I'm a bit saddened to hear you've hit a bump in the road, Link.  Fingers crossed for you!
Title: Re: The Commissions Thread
Post by: Link Prime on 16 March, 2016, 12:56:52 pm
Cheers for the advice fellas.

To be honest, with so many artists on the board I didn't know how ye'd respond.
"Give the guy a f*cking break, Link" was a pre-imagined shoot-down!

Of course, the consensus is correct- the only sane course of action is to send a polite but direct email, which I have just done.

Just to reiterate that I have genuine respect for the artist, and don't think it amounted to anything more than the commission falling through the cracks. The months (and years) can drift by quite quickly, as I well know.

I'll keep you posted on the response.

For clarity, I maybe should have added that that part of my post was referring to commissioning American artists, were it appears to be the norm to be asked to pay the full amount - including postage, up front.
And the first time you see your finished piece is when It plops through your letterbox. Often, it would seem, after quite some time has passed.

Tharg's mighty artdroids - past and present, are another breed entirely - and I'd gladly pay upfront for these guys, though none have ever asked.

Is that a brolly Dredd's holding? I suppose that's apt ...   :)

He's at the Kendal Comic Art festival in a couple of weeks. Must get him to doodle something for me.

Love it! Great to see Max and Dredd together, been a while since we did.

Does anyone know whether Max is still with us, and if so, when was the last time we saw him?  Did he survive DoC?

Nice touch, Dredd holding Max's brolly (I assume that's his brolly...)

This thread is incredible! I'm jealously poring over each page - you are a lucky bunch! hippynumber1 & Pete Wells (to name a few) have amazing collections, wow! So how much (if I may ask) do commissions usually cost? I would love to have Mick McMahon or Carlos Ezquerra Dredd. Im not in the original art club but would love to join ;)

Joe and Max.

One of Mick's best!  He's done some absolutely cracking commissions in recent years but this is definitely one of my favourites; looks like he had fun with this one.  Was he happy with it?

I think the whole thing took about 18 months.

It never occurred to me that Dredd's big pointy stick for hitting people with could be viewed as Max's brolly, but I must say that I find the apparent ambiguity pleasing.

Some of you may have seen this on Facebook...

Never thought for a moment I would acquire something like this.  Can't wait to get it framed.

The man himself was a pleasure to communicate with.

Should mention - it's A3 in size.

Backstory - I'm a cop in the Queensland Police Service (Australia).  Have spent time in the radback bringing law to the lawless, so the background is quite apt.  Asked CE to make us both look suitably battle-damaged.

My LBV (load-bearing vest) is quite complicated - I shouldn't be amazed that CE got it almost perfect.

I can die happy now.

Thought I'd post a pic of my Carlos commission framed (see above).

Here's the A3 original...went for a 3D-style mount with a hint of silver.

(http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u305/krakajac/FE3977C0-EE0D-4EEF-8913-A55094AE351B_zps6gxmjsll.jpg) (http://s171.photobucket.com/user/krakajac/media/FE3977C0-EE0D-4EEF-8913-A55094AE351B_zps6gxmjsll.jpg.html)

And here's something a bit different.  I have a friend who's an amateur colourist.  He got his hands on a JPEG of the original - and unbeknownst to me, had a bit of fun.  I think he did a great job - considering he isn't really a fan of Dredd - and had to do some research to see how my uniform looks in colour.  A nice item (A4 size) to accompany the original.

Very nice Kracajac.  It's a great feeling when you've got the art framed and it's up on the wall for you to enjoy whenever you want.  Interesting mounting with that silver - really stands out.

And your mate's done a great job with the colouring.

And arriving at my door today is a commission piece (larger than A3) from the insanely talented Mr Colin MacNeil. The level of work he has put into this is just staggering. I am humbled to receive it, tbh.

As with my other DoC commissions, I asked if there was a part he had enjoyed drawing from his time on the tale. After thinking about it, Colin said "Well, there's this one panel I drew of Fear, that I really like" and "as an experiment, I'd like to render it a certain way. I think it'll work".

The droids are just the best, aren't they. (I know Colin sometimes pops by the forum, so I'd just like to say thank you once again.)

Day of Chaos: Judge Fear.

Absolutely amazing. Reads like a fusion of his early Insurrection and Defoe styles, with a massive dollop of Doré. I love it.

MacNeil is just a stunningly versatile artist, who seems to never stop developing and experimenting.

Hi, my name is Adrian Salmon, I started my comics career working on the Megazine for which I drew Judge Karyn , Deathwatch and Cabal. Later I did a number of fiction illustrations when Alan Barnes was editor.Mostly I'm known for my connection to Dr Who. I was lead storyboard artist and colourist on the recent BBC Shada animation.

Anyway I'm taking commissions for the next month or so. Here's a link to my blog which has samples and prices. Give me an email if interested. Cheers!

I do love a bit of Karl Richardson's art, so super happy to receive this A3 commission today.

Perfectly drawn art.
