Perhaps of no interest to yiz whatsoever, but I've started posting a short piece of fiction online via 140-ish lettered slabs on Twitter. It's titled '1978'. I'd submitted it to a couple of places to nowt (which of course may just mean it's shite. Haha! And all apologies if that's the case!), but I just felt bad for it sitting around scratching its arse and thought I'd try something a bit different.

Cheers folks!

Film & TV / STAR TREK returns to TV...
09 February, 2016, 07:26:27 PM
Rumblings about this happening turned into reality a few months back but here's an exciting announcement (for me anyway!): Bryan Fuller, ex-DS9 and more recently the superb Hannibal TV show is joining as one of the co-creators.

"My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls," Fuller said in a statement. "Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire. It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before."

Hoping they cut the ties with any of the previous versions (particularly the JJverse) and go a la Next Generation with it. Jump another hundred years ahead, new cast, new ship, new adventures.

Books & Comics / HOUND
25 April, 2014, 02:35:22 AM
Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this but it looked appropriate. The first 21 pages of Paul J. Bolger's HOUND can be seen here via his Kickstarter page. HOUND is his telling of Cu Chulainn. Well worth drooling over and, if you're so inclined, contributing to so he can get the next three volumes of it up and running. Some breathtaking artwork here.

And again - you liked it so far, you'll like this very much. Story really kicks in and there's plenty of gunfire. McCrea's art is just awesome. I love this. Love to see him do some Dredd for the prog. I absolutely adore this version of Anderson.

If I had one criticism it's that the Martians themselves are pretty loosely defined and as a result, don't really seem to be registering as heavily as they should. Even when they finally take over this issue, they're pretty lightweight villains. The Meg mobsters we've seen overshadow them.

Nonetheless, it's still above average and fits in nicely with the Dredd universe we're allowed to like, as opposed to that steamed turd of a regular title. More please!

General / RARE Kev O'Neill artwork

All apologies if someone has already linked to this before but I'd never seen these before and seeing his pencils is a rare treat for me.

Although do we really need an excuse to run more O'Neill art...?

"It's no picnic for me either, pal. Just hold still, will ya?"

You liked #1? You'll like #2.

Same as last time - absolutely love McCrea's artwork. Spiky and electric. The plot thickens and with no need for spoiler bars - Anderson, East Meg One and Manta tanks turn up in this one. My one worry with #1 was the feeling that the story feels a little light to fill four issues and sure enough, there's some filler here to pad the issue out but there's a couple of visuals and a ton of great gore that make it for me. Great stuff.

It's pretty good. The story's a little light, I think. Curious to see how they're going to make this last four issues. There's quite a few references to familiar faces and stories from classic Dredd that, like almost everything in this IDW-verse, appear watered-down.

In saying that, I quite liked this. Even if it's not Ewing on full thrusters, it's head-and-shoulders above the regular IDW Dredd title and I really hope the publishers are taking note of how they can still successfully keep Dredd and his world relatively consistent with the tone and style of the 2000AD version and present it as a fresh take. (That is: Use some writers who understand Dredd. Hopefully if/when Swierczynski moves on, they can get a writer who can address those issues.)

My highlight is the art. McCrea's style is just perfect for this. Gritty and scratchy. Reminds me a bit of Jim Baikie but pumped up a bit. Wouldn't have thought of him for Dredd, to be honest, but this works out great. I would recommend this for sure.

Other Reviews / IDW's Complete Cam Kennedy...

Just arrived this morning. Beautiful. Repros are good and clean. Blacks are solid. Great reminder what a fantastic artist and contributor to Dredd's world and look Cam is. Highly recommended, in my opinion.

Much appreciated. Can't track the Meg back issues down over here in La-La land...

Books & Comics / Tao Bang/Didier Cassegrain, anyone...?
09 February, 2013, 11:06:02 PM
Have to admit, don't have a whole lot of French stuff but bought these a few years ago and I'm just in love with Cassegrain's art. I don't know if there's an artist alive who draws sexy/kick-ass women as well as this guy. Unbelievable. Volume three's been promised a long time now with no sign of it ever coming and he appears to have moved on to another project Code McCallum since. Anyone else read these...?

When Dredd and Anderson end up out on the skateboard park/ledge, Anderson looks hard at Atlantic Towers and there's a hint of her theme on the music score. Thought I remember Garland saying there was some importance to the block's name in an interview. Is it supposed to be the block she grew up in...?

A couple of things:

This isn't something I would have sought out seeing as I've most of Bolland's stuff in other formats and frankly, I've been of the thought that this kinda thing is the only reason IDW is even interested in taking on Dredd which kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth. However, the significantly better half went and got this for me for Xmas and I have to say, I'm very happy to be eating crow.

This book's a beauty. Looks like maybe four or five of the pages have reproduced a little muddily but overall the quality is top notch. Right up there with the original Titan collections but on superior paper quality. (I made sure to compare...) Good solid blacks, crisp line work. Have to say, I could probably compare it to watching your favorite movie on Blu-Ray for the first time and just noticing details you'd never been aware of. It's not just the strip. Bolland's color work from the annuals is here, pin-ups, the Walter strips and a bunch of the US Eagle covers.

Maybe it's just because Bolland didn't actually produce a huge amount of art for 2000AD that it's so easy to take his work for granted because we've all pored over it so much (and to be honest, I really feel his art is missing something vital since he went all digital...) so I was pretty excited and delighted to rediscover how utterly brilliant, exciting and masterful his Dredd work is. The Judge Death stuff we all know back-to-front at this point but some of his storytelling during The Cursed Earth and Judge Child is just dizzying. The detail, the expressions, the sense of design and really just making the concepts and designs look completely functional and real while still staying utterly ridiculous. I loved Bolland's work when I was younger and then as I got older (and realized I'll never be able to draw as well as him! Haha!) I got lost in O'Neill and McMahon and guess I just pushed his work to the side.

To cut a long story short: this is a fucking awesome book and if you buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Same address I've always had but linked it to a different, more effective site. Just got tired of the blog format bollocks for posting artwork. All that scrolling, too hard to find your own work so for any of you looking for something simpler (and easier!) can I recommend carbonmade.com...? There's a free version which is pretty good but I paid for the bigger one and I love it. All the art in one place. Easy to navigate. Lovely-jubbly.

Anyone remember this strip...? Jim Baikie artwork...? Any ideas about how to track it down beyond buying all the old issues...?
