Title: Stone-cold boot of the law – first sneak peek of new Dredd statue
Post by: Molch-R on 07 March, 2011, 12:48:39 PM
He's been a model for the rule of law on the streets of Mega-City One for more than 30 years, and now Judge Dredd is coming to your home!

Pop Culture Shock Collectibles are pleased to announce they are the newest licensor for the classic British comic, 2000 AD. The range will launch with a statue of Judge Dredd – the lawman of the future.

This licensing agreement with 2000 AD's owners, Rebellion, will bring high-end statues of legendary characters from the famous comic book in both 1/5th and 1/4 scale.

This new 2000 AD series will offer highly detailed sculpting, masterful painting and the highest quality polystone in a line of statues that will please even the most discriminating fan – whether a 2000 AD reader or a collector of science-fiction or comic book memorabilia.

Pop Culture Shock made a name for itself with its Street Fighter™ and ThunderCats™ statue lines, distributed through Sideshow Collectibles and Diamond Distribution.

Jerry Macaluso, President and Founder of Pop Culture Shock Collectibles, said:
"I've been a big fan of the 2000 AD universe since my teenage years.
"At Pop Culture Shock Collectibles we only focus on properties we are passionate about, and this is definitely one of them. We are extremely excited to be working closely with Rebellion on this project and soon we will bring the ultimate representations of these iconic characters into collector's homes".

Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said:
"It's great to see Dredd immortalised in a statue that both captures the essence of the character and makes him look pretty damn hardcore.
"This will be a great addition to any Dredd fan's collection and should introduce newcomers to the mind-bending world of Mega-City One."

Due to no price being mentioned I thought I would check the site. Lion-O $349, so I guess this line will be in that ballpark! If so I do think you need to be sorting out some products that fans can afford.
Even the large statues from the past didn't cost that much.
If I have put 2 & 2 together and got 5 then I apologize but I reckon, yet again most fans will be wondering what they are going to be able to buy!

That's Call-Me-Kenneth decapitated on the base, yes?
He looks good but that's all that can really be said so far.
Aside from, why stripes on the boots?

Pads on the top of the feet.

1920's style Spats on the boots.

Strange steam grill design on the kneepad tongues.

I'm curious as to whose Dredd costume design this is based on?

I think the last batch of helmets was the last batch but you never know!

So come on then let's have some possible prices, like I said earlier I think it's gonna be around the $350 mark. Someone must have an idea!!!

The bits I've seen remind me a bit of Chris Weston's Dredd?

Regarding the helmets, I don't think Wake has any - he just mentions about possibly doing another run.

A statue of the puffy blue Dredd fancy dress costume perhaps??

Looking a bit like a Cliff Robinson Dredd.

A lot of competition for rather expensive statues, between this and the threeA range, which seems to have a knack for the 2000AD stuff so far, the quality and tone will really be the decider and accurate old-school aesthetics may win out. Call-Me-Kennteh looks good but will Dredd, why not just show us the whole cg image and be done with it?

Hear, hear. I accept that the price of Mongrol is actually pretty reasonable for figures of that size and detail nowadays (Seriously. I had a quick look at some quality action figures in FP this weekend, and considering Mongrol is probably twice as wide, he's pretty good value for a new figure) but it's still out of a lot of our price ranges. And seeing the price of statues, elsewhere, I'd imagine this will be too. (Feel free to surprise me though. ;) )

I guess there's probably an assumption that because 2000 AD tends to be aimed at an older audience, we'll have more disposable income. Actually, overall, that's probably true, but a vast amount of us don't. Even some in full time work! Obviously, I'm not suggesting these items be priced lower as the creators have to make a decent profit for their work, but a few smaller items would be welcome.

I look forward to seeing this statue in full though.

Looking at the company website they use some pretty cool sculptors, people who produce work directly for Bowen Designs and Sideshow as well, so I would imagine this Dredd should be great

'American Werewolf in London' characters are the most interesting choice but I generally dislike the finish on this type of painted statue.

Sure is Joe,thought I was the only one thinking that. This and the 3A range all are stunning especially the Mongrol piece which is jaw dropping.

The detail looks great, although I think the shoulder pads look a bit flat and shapeless.

No intention of buying any of this stuff though :)

looks great but it's odd they chose to go with a Mk1 lawgiver.

Edit .. I suppose with him standing on KMK, it kinda makes sense though

Despite not having either the funds nor the inclination to buy anything of this kind, I do kind'a like that. Suitably chunky yet not overdone, interesting take on the helmet, blah blah blah. But- are those spent shells coming out of the correct place? It just looks odd that they're ejecting from the top of the dial.

SBT

EDIT: But of all of it, that's the effect that I like the most!

A nice very job on the figure, but the lawgiver looks a bit Heath Robinson.  There's a little chimney instead of an upper magazine...

Happily, I'm not the target audience - I own exactly one 'statue', a nice replica of a Cycladic offertory figurine, which lives in a stout box until my spawn are old enough to pay for any damages with their own money.

You'd think they'd go with the older style helmet if that's the case though. (Not because of the gun, as I know that changed way after the helmet did, I'm referring to the robot.)

On the other hand, it is very good. A nice action piece.

I think the base is way too large. Get rid of Call Me Kenneth and have him stood on that eagle badge base bit.
The angle of the Lawgiver to the angle of Dredd's head is wrong.
Why is he holding the daystick when he is in a fire and manouvre position?

I would go on but I have to go and earn some dosh to buy it

I think the last batch of helmets was the last batch but you never know!

There should be at least one more batch, but using slightly scratched respirator badges. Once I have completely run out of metal respirator badges that will be a definite end to that run. I don't want to sell helmets with resin badges, and making more metal ones would be too costly.

Cheers,

Wake

In general I like it but there are too many niggly things that would irritate me after a while.  The eagle pad looks too thick, and the other shoulder pad looks too flat (I really like the left shoulder pad when it's shown as a big solid piece of protection).  The boots have a wrinkle in them (seen in the first spoiler pic) which is probably accurate but doesn't appeal to me.  It seems to me that the designer has decided the boot holster is part of a "sleeve" that is worn over the boot and beong fabric it's wrinkled (and stripes).  The helmet and elbow & knee pads are just a bit wrong, and the lawgiver looks too chunky in a bad way.  It's not the sleek, delicate Mk I design but it's not beefy in a realistic way either.

I also agree about the price issue, and indeed the whole thinking on the merchandise line.  I would love to buy some Dredd/2000AD bits and pieces but I don't want another statue.  I know that the revived Dr Who has a much bigger market so they can get the kind of cost benefits of big production runs that 2000AD can't, but I'm really very pleased that I can finally buy a realistic toy Dalek for my son for a reasonable price.  I suppose it also comes down to the licencees that approach Rebellion; if it's only statue makers saying "We'd like to make a Dredd figure" then there's no way we're going to get a toy Lawmaster for our old Dredd action figures.

Post by: Spaceghost on 10 March, 2011, 12:04:29 PM
I like it. It's well within the boundaries of various artist's interpretations of Dredd over the years. The helmet and Lawgiver have a Bisley look to them, The pads and eagle all look good. The boots look cool too and Dredd's build is spot on too.

The only thing is, I'm never going to be able to justify spending this kind of money on a statue. And my wife wouldn't let me put it on the fire place anyway.

I'd like some smaller, more affordable, perhaps more practical items of merchandise. Maybe some character key rings, bottle openers or car stickers. How about some little diorama models like those you find in Japanese 'gatcha' machines for a few quid each?

Just something that costs less than a week's wages please!

Sorry Rich but I didn't grow up with Biz Dredd, never considered a particularly 'classic' version of Dredd in the Bolland or Ezquerra fashion, so I wish they'd tap into true classic Dredd than the rather brief and gaudy 'Heavy Metal' version.

I'm with joe on this one.

How about a series of sculpts in the style of different artists, like the batman black and white statues from years ago.

What would be cooler than a bolland dredd beside an esquerra dredd beside a Dillon dredd etc...

Never really liked the body builder dredd trend biz started and so many followed.

Biz,  :'( ....im sure he has his fans, but he's not for me.
An Ezquerra Dredd circa '81/,82 would be a good alternative to the usual fare, and as someone who worships at the church of McMahon, a version of his Dredd circa '78 - before the boots got too big, would be most welcome too.

Well it looks good to me. It's not a million miles away from how I imagine dredd. He's got to have some muscle given that he doesn't exactly have a desk job. If it retails for about 20 quid I'll be buying it. Might stretch to 30 quid once I see the paint job.

Yes, at least times 10. Which is a shame. If they'd gone for 1/6 scale rather than 1/5th or 1/4th (!!!) it would probably have been more affordable. I'd love a Dredd statue on my bookshelf, but not for that sort of money.

And actually it looks massive. I don't think it will fit on my bookshelf in any case. sigh  :(

Has anyone else noticed how image 6 seems to have been taken solely with the intention of showing off Dredd's extremely... sculpted... buns?  :o

Saw this a couple of days ago, fairly nice but for a few things...

Red and Silver on the gloves? when was that every printed?

Legs are all wrong, knee to foot is either way too long or the thighs are totally wrong (more likely!) too thin, too short and as mentioned before, someone has taken far too much time playing with Dredd's arse!  :o

Not keen on the flashes on the helmet either.

I suspect every product will have bits that people don't overly like!  :-\

BUT its great that there is another Dredd related item out there.  :D

When you look at that Sideshow Dredd statue and compare it to the quality, price and most importantly aesthetics of the 3A stuff, there's no competition.

$499/$399! Fuck that, I'll be amazed if they sell any.

Horses for courses but the look of that statue does nothing for me.

Next I checked my emails and found out that I've ordered one! Damn you alcohol!  :-[

I think so. They're described as Mega sized.

I've got a massive Desperate Dan mug. I'm curious if it's as big as that. (I have two other large mugs. Large enough to cause comments at work,  but they're both considerably smaller than the Dan mug.)

I may order one. I'd quite like both, but I can't really justify £20 on mugs! Especially as I'm holding out to find out how much that new 1/16 Mongrol will be...

The missing parts (the switch out Call-Me-Kenneth bits of the base) will be sent out separately in about a month or so, apparently, it is being looked into now. It is annoying that such an oversight was made by the factory to begin with, but Jerry Macaluso (who runs PCS) is good people and will make sure it is all sorted, I'm confident of that.

I'm really looking forward to their Judge Death piece now.

I opened it and I must say it's a poor show. So many things glaringly wrong that it grates in the end!
Let's list them, shall we:-

Colours scheme on certain parts is wrong.
Lawgiver with an 8 round selector (unless I have missed something).
Lawgiver with a zero selector and a 4 missing on one side.
The spent cases are too big for the magazines they were held in.
The gloves have a strange silver/metallic band around each finger about halfway down but on the left glove one is missing.
The links in the chain, how many!!!
The boot holster is just a large pouch, with a flap.
NO boot knife.
The magnets that hold the Lawgiver and nightstick in place are very weak.
I could go on but I'll leave the other points for fellow buyers to find.

The problem for me is that when you pay over £350 for a Dredd statue I expect it to be spot on. Is that too much to ask for, really!

From the video, my only remarks were that the ejected cartridges look very delicate and likely to snap off, and those trousers were buttock-huggingly tight!

Those ejected cases slip into the side of the Lawgiver via a small piece of the Lawgiver itself. Very flimsy!

I saw the video and I have to admit it did look very cool-
Its a personal choice of how the artist represents Dredd, and often details are added to give that little bit of punch. I can sympathise that they havent gone a classic route with this version, I guess its more IDW style ?!

I can remember similar comments with the belt buckle on the Dredd V Death.
I really like the cartridges coming out of the LG, ok its artistic license but Ithink thats a detail which was a stroke of genius.
Ive yet to see it in person but it does look like most are sold out, so I am guessing it has gone done well with Statue collectors

Anyone who purchased the exclusive version direct from Sideshow, make sure that you contact them and inform them that you didn't receive the Call-me-Kenneth robot parts in the box, as apparently scuttlebutt is that they have decided to be asses about things and only supply the replacement parts that come in from PCS to those who contact them and ask about it, and are thereby placed "on the list", rather than doing what they should do, and just send them automatically to everyone who ordered, given that due to a factory error, nobody actually got said parts.

Of course, it could also be that they are confused as anybody, and don't rightly know what is going on themselves or what course of action is to be taken yet, but better safe than sorry as they say.

Last I heard the replacement parts, due to Christmas and New Year, are now not expected to be fully made and shipped until sometime in February. Personally, given Chinese New Year falls in early February next year, I'd say that March is actually more likely. Pretty annoying, but what can you do, eh?

Also please tell anyone you know who purchased the exclusive to do likewise, so they don't get screwed over by any Sideshow laziness in distributing the missing pieces.

When you do so, you can expect an email back that goes something like this:

Quote
Thank you for your email and I am sorry to hear that the pieces were missing form your Exclusive Judge Dred. We have added your information to our waiting list for these items and hope to be able to provide you with more information from Pop Culture Shock shortly.

As soon as we have an estimated arrival time for the missing pieces we will be in touch.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Post by: Judge Fish on 21 December, 2012, 10:24:08 PM
Just received mine, and as much as I wanted and hoped to love it, unfortunately I'd have to agree with much of what has been said above. Bottom line, the quality of this piece just isn't up to scratch for the price. The sculpt isn't bad at all, and I can accept that on artistic license grounds, despite some inaccuracies and frankly odd decisions, but the detailing and paint work is downright mediocre (at best), parts of it feel very cheap, materials wise, and overall it is just nowhere near the quality one should expect of a $500 piece.

I've been collecting statues for quite a few years now, including many 1:4 scale pieces, from various manufacturers, and this one, for the price, just doesn't cut it in my books. Yes, the size is impressive, and gives it presence, but that is really this piece's biggest asset. Take that away and while the emperor may not quite be naked, he's certainly prancing around in his underoos.

There are a couple of statue forums that I frequent where a few people are absolutely raving over this piece, and having mine in hand I just don't see why. This is hardly a home run, let alone the masterpiece some are raving it to be. Perhaps it is quite telling that most of those praising this statue are casual Dredd fans at best, in fact many are barely familiar with the character, and just bought it because they thought it looked cool...why you'd blow $500 on a piece based on a character that you had no attachment to, I don't know, but there you are.

But almost all of these people are regular statue collectors, and I just find it utterly flummoxing that they can't see any of the myriad issues with this piece, just on basic quality and execution grounds. I mean a couple of them are rabid cheerleading fanboys for the company in question, so their hyperbole is expected, but others usually seem more fair and grounded in their opinions, but pretty much all of them are going on like this is the statue of the year or something. I just don't get that at all.

Yeah, now I won't be ordering their Judge Death at all. Again I like much of what they have shown of the sculpt, but as huge a fan as I am of (almost) all things Dredd, PCS's efforts here just haven't earnt my leap of faith, let alone my return business.

And my wait for a truly great Judge Dredd statue continues...

Sideshow is notoriously lazy/slow in responding to CS inquiries. At any given time you can usually expect to wait between two or three days just to get a response, so don't panic if you don't hear back from them immediately. Because, well, you won't. Ever. But they do respond and sort things out eventually. And things tend to get a bit quicker after that initial response, and your issue is 'in the system' as it were.

If you need something done that just can't wait, the best bet is to call them (customer service line number is on the website), but I've never done that, so I don't know how smooth (or not) that process is, even putting aside any call costs.

You can probably add another few days on top of that expected wait at the moment, as the office is closed for the holidays, and I think they will be unstaffed until the 27th, and even then they'll still be understaffed, no doubt, and working their way through backlogged CS emails, so yeah, don't be too surprised if you don't hear back until sometime next week.

I pick mine up when I get back to Aberdeen.  Love a good statue, I am the same way with Batman that Judge Burdis is with Dredd, and I've been looking for a nice Dredd piece for a while now.  Fingers crossed its better than the reviews suggest.

Ah, it's okay I suppose, I enjoyed putting it together. I'll certainly be buying the Death one.

Here's some pictures with a 6" Dredd to give you an idea of scale.

The box, kicked to shit by Royal Mail as usual:

The box with 6" Dredd figure:

Grrrrrr!

No 53:

Stuff in the box:

Aaaaah 'Sharky' from, quote, "the well known 'Chicken Run' issue of the Judge Dredd Megazine."

Hmmmm, I likes me a more angled, angry looking visor. Decent chinnage though.

The thing itself. I wonder if the missus will let me keep it in the front room (or, indeed, at all?) And will she believe it was £50?

Chaps- be careful if the wives ever read your posts back...

Pete- great photos, I'm very impressed with the scale of the piece, but my word there are so many things I don't like about the sculpt.

Aye, great photos.
When i clicked on the thread and saw those first two photos - and prior to reading any comments, i did for a split second think "Blimey, that packaging is a bit OTT for that tiny figure".

Ha ha! I think it's safe to say the wife will NEVER read this forum, I think she'd rather gouge her eyes out!

I'd certainly agree with your second comment Bolt, this was a drunken purchase but in reflection, I'd rather have it than not...

I don't buy this kind of stuff really - as a sculpt I think it's OK, I guess a lot of people would prefer something that wasn't styled after Bisley, but it does have a following.

Generic email arrived today and included this

We apologize that your item was sent out with a missing accessory, however; we are happy to inform you that the 'Call-Me-Kenneth' pieces from the regular version will be provided by Pop Culture Shock and we will be shipping these items out to you shortly upon arrival.

I wonder if we get hit with VAT on something we have already paid it on. This could be interesting and now that I know the parcel I collected today was not this part I can send the company my polite email explaining a few things!

I sent an email a few weeks back with reference the potential for being stung with more VAT and they replied with the following, which is good

any missing pieces will be sent using a replacement commodity, with all duties and shipping taxes billed to Sideshow's account.

I also pointed out the mistakes in the build, quite politely and their reply wasn't as good this time.

Additionally, we are happy to pass your feedback onto the manufacturer of this piece, Pop Culture Shock, regarding this particular character.
If you are in any way unhappy with your item, please let me know and we may help assist you with a full refund.

I found this interesting, as I hope it means they will take better care next time or it could mean, who cares just send the bugger back. I hope the former, as I want Death to be as good as the stuff I see Michael White post of his sculpts on facebook.
