Title: Red Dead Redemption
Post by: amberkraken on 18 May, 2010, 08:05:47 AM
Sorry if people have already been talking about this, but I couldn't find the thread.
So, who else is excited about this?
I loved the GTA games and Fable and this seems like a perfect blend of the two. Plus with the recent amazing 'Ichabod...' I'm really in the mood for some cowboy gameage!

Iy looks good, but I won't be playing this unitl I get my hands on a PSTHREE and the place to store one.

In the meantime I could download Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West on Steam for a very reasonable $14.99 (USD).

But right now I waiting for GTA IV to donwload. It's taking it's time.

The "from the people who brought you GTA" line in the advertising for this is a bit naughty.  While both are Rockstar games - i.e. publihsed by Rockstar Games of New York - the GTA team is at Rockstar North in Scotland.  Red Dead Redemption is made by Rock Star San Diego, a whole different continent away.

I saw a clip from this showing the amount of freedom you have in the game: The player lassoed a nun, tied her up, threw her on the back of his horse, rode out of town, dumped her on the train tracks and let the train run her over.

It made me sad it's not coming out for the PC.

Try it in Blockbuster, trading in certain new games can sometimes net you a new one for £15.
It's how I got Bioshock 2 :)

I'm hoping it'll give you a truckload of minor objectives too. Like Fallout 3, but with the game still on free-roll on completion in GTA style.

This game's bittersweet for me, it's great to see everyone's loving it but it was the last thing I worked on at Rockstar and I'm a bit gutted I'm not there anymore (at least until another project comes up).

Got a 360 copy myself, so might see some of you online anyways while I put off the job-search...

Absolutely loving this.  Only thing I can say against it is having it released this last weekend.

I got this on the PS3 and probably the first game in a long time I REALLY want to get on and play at any moment I can.

I haven't even played much of the single player, just been jumping online and doing raids on gang territories in a posse!

This game is GENIUS! Gnius I tells ya!

No it doesn't.  Look at the way the arms in the flying video have been reworked to move like bird wings.  Someone clearly went to some trouble to get this 'mistake' working the way they wanted.

The Red Dead Redemption shortages would seem to be the result of a pricing dispute between Take Two (the company that owns Rockstar) and some of their UK distributors, including at least one of the big supermarket chains.

I completed this last night and thought the ending was sheer brilliance. I'd seen Red Dead forum threads that were complaining about it so didn't know what to expect (but i certainly didn't expect that!) but I think it was perfect and totally made sense. It made those last few farm missions with the boy wonderfully meaningful.

Title: Re: Red Dead Redemption

You know Tordelback I feel exactly the same. I almost got some PC games recently including Arkham Aslyum which looked great but a quick dabble with a few cheap games including Dredd vs Death helped me remember why I don't. I'm chuffing rubbish at them and the amount of time I need to invest to get anything out of them simply doesn't exist anymore. Neither does staying up until 4am '...just to complete the next bit..'

Then this game comes along and I'm thinking 'Well I used to be able to handle Playstation games maybe if I got this on a console it'd be worthwhile'

The thought of being a cowboy is clearly driving me to maddness!

Best Game ever im not even gonna try an find words to do it justice.

The Scenary and whole wild west world is just Beautiful and a much welcomed alternative to the Hustle n Bustle of GTA.. The Inclusion of wildlife is a great touch also.
The Game itself is very easy but who cares ..its all about collecting and free Roaming.

Going back to hustle n bustle ...How great would a Judge Dredd game be if Rockstar did it ??

cruising round the Crime Filled city on lawmaster and other various futuristic machines , missions in the cursed earth ...mutants , various criminals , Fatty Blocks.

Was live, some Yankee teen kept killing me as we approaching the gang hideouts, he did it five times!! I got lucky respawned behind him and beat him to death with fists. Felt s mo good, spent next twenty minutes seating him out and taking out the long barrel with scope. He left the arena.  I was very satified with the payback. Little scrott.

me 'n darren  had a similar experience we cleared out a settlement and moseyed past a couple of players who waited and shot us in the back! gits... if you want to do that shit go and join a gang shootout not pissing folk off in free roam.

cougars are worse than bears and always travel in packs of three ! i kill the beasties then wait for the others to show before any skinning or they can get you mid skin and theres f. all you can do!

Yeah, I softened the grizzly up with my pistol first then knifed him to get the achievement.  I still can't disarm six blokes without reloading though, and that's all I need to become a legend of the west - grrrr!

The only tip I could give, use the Rifle with ten shots, (or a weapon with more) Dead Aim his hand off. That's all I can think of.

using the normal rifle even with dead eye didn't kill it! WTF? ended up using the sniper rifle. that was powerful enough.
Completed it yesterday (noy all the challenges though.

True true. Epic ending, memorable, really worked for me.

Very cool game all around, even better than Red Dead Revolver, which was a lot of fun at the time.

I was very surprised by what those cards went for, which I guess goes to show how into the game people are. I'm eyeballing the rest of my R* merch now and wondering what it would get, although I'd be sad to get rid of any of it. Shopping for a flat with the missus though and the buying/moving will be easier with more money/less tat!

I'm about a third the way through and it's fantastic.

I've not tried multiplayer yet but will give it a blast (and sent a FR to a few on here for some posse action).

Had two bizarre things happen in the game.
Firstly, I abandoned my horse outside of Rathskeller Fork while I went in to do some Al Swearengen stuff. After getting into a fistfight with a bloke for killing his chickens and pigs, I went outside to find my horse trundling by on top of a stagecoach.

Second, I was galloping said horse to Pike's Basin, lost my bearings and ended up jumping over the edge of the cliff. Unluckily (for him), there was a bandit standing underneath as part of the hideout mini-mission. The poor black hat got a horse right in the face and I tumbled off on impact and survived..

I had tears in my eyes as I skinned "Champ" and looted some corpses.

Not had alot of time on it but so far:

Seemingly a man appeared an dropped out of thin air just outside the train window when it pulled in at the start of the game

Some bastad posing as an innocent in need stole my horse! I liked that horse and didn't want to get a different one so ran over an switched my xbox off. Stuart 1 Autosave 0

Have had a brief go on this at a mates house but we had been drinking.

Instead of getting on a horse I managed to skin it and start a small scale war in some sleepy hamlet in my annoyance. I've since been told about auto save. I don't think he's going to be happy when he finds out his horse is dead and his wanted rating has one through the roof.

Good looking game though  :)

I had a woman do this to me, so I whistled, lassoed her from horseback and dragged her across the plains to the nearest train tracks.
Then I hogtied her and left her on the tracks. Mr Choo-Choo then thundered down and took the wrong fork so I had to put her on the back of my horse and ride ahead of it. It then stopped at Armadillo for what seemed like ages so I cut her free and dragged her around a bit more. Finally, I got my way when Mr Choo-Choo rolled over her thieving body. I honestly don't know how serial killers put up with this kind of stuff.

The next time it happened, it was a bloke so I whistled, lassoed the bellend and dragged him to an area with lots of wolves.

Just watch yourself in Mexico.
I stopped on the edge of a river to take in the majestic scenery with hawks circling overhead as the sun began to set. As I sat on my noble steed, jaw agape in wonder at God's creation, a bobcat leapt up from nowhere and slotted my horse sending me tumbling down into a watery grave.

That never happened to Judith Chalmers on Wish You Were Here.

I've not had much time to play this for a while.  Got to a certain point near the end and decided to prolong the ending until after I've completed the chanllenges

Needless to say I'm stuck on the last sharpshooter.  Tried to do it with a rifle,  keeping it drawn and following the Pike's Basin challenge, but I don't seem to register any disarms, even when it looks like I've been successful...

Having a son who loves video games, and just having bought him a ps3, ive been scoffing at you all in this thread and indulging in some 'games are for kids and i dont have the time' wankery.

However, having given this thread a proper readthrough, ive given up. I will be buying this game for myself at the earliest opportunity, because i want to tie nuns to tracks, kill bears and be attacked by wolves in mexico! It sounds fucking ace, if i can trust yous guys. And i think i can.

Just enlighten me, is there a decent zombies game for the ps3, that doesn't involve poxy superpowered living dead, like those rubbish resident evil things? I just want a straightforward survivalist zombie thing, not an fps necessarily.

had another blast on this last night as I had to go back to Rathskeller Fork on some unfinished business. I came across two odd things.

Firstly, a bloke was getting off his horse as I galloped along. I'd seen someone do this before and loot a corpse so thought I would beat him to it just to piss him off. Anyway, when I arrived he was standing next to a rock and peeing. Really peeing. With a bright yellow stream and everything. He didn't appreciate me standing there watching him either, cos he stopped, gave me a mouthful of abuse and then went on his way.

When I got close to the town there was a local screaming her guts out not far outside it. Turns out she was being chased by a cougar, so I'd have been screaming too. I'd had my run ins with cougars before so was a bit wary but gave chase anyway. The ground was very hilly so I kept losing a bead on the thing. So, I decided to ride ahead of the screaming local to intercept the moggy as it passed.
Instead, she just run past me. There was no cougar chasing her. As you get a reward for saving a random stranger I thought I'd follow her and see if the glitch corrected itself but she had run straight into the saloon in the town and was still showing on my radar as a large blue dot. I followed her in and stood next to her panicking form and nothing happened. About 10 seconds later a cougar came running through the doors and killed her. Then just started walking around in the bar. Nobody batted an eyelid. It was like a house party at Siegfried and Roy's.

That was all too weird for me so I left town.

PLayed a bit online last night- that was fun! Shooting someone in the face and watching them tumble from theri horse is a beautiful thing.

Then after doing my first bounty hunter mission I was heading home, saw a cougar and thought I'd have a pop. Killed the bugger, and while I was off the horse, a bloody boar ran in and attacked me! I was tangling with him when a second fucking cougar came out of nowhere and finished me off!
What's going on? Are the animals working in teams here or something?

But by gum, this is one gorgeous looking game.

Hopefully no zombie cougars.

Further glitches...rode to Escalera last night to find the army bloke running the joint sitting his chair, which wasn't that odd except for the fact that it was hovering a good 12 inches above the table in his room. :o

I did the six disarms in the gang hideout in Pikes Basin using the Evans Repeater which holds 22 shots. Stay on horseback and just ride up close.

Also if you go into dead eye it reloads without it registering as a reload.

Spent a couple of hours last night getting used to this... Managed to shoot some rabbits and a few coyotes. Weird bit in the rabbit-shoot, where it was registering one bunny left, but the red dot was over one that was blatantly dead, splattered to buggery over the crops. I eventually shot it again after spending ages looking for a hidey-wabbit, and then all was good again.

However, got horribly stuck on the horsey racing, as it took me ages to figure out the controls and that i was supposed to follow the fires. Hey, i havent played video games properly since Rambo on the c64! But today i got my seven year old to complete the race so i can move on tomorrow night. He did it second go, the little sod.

Which reminds me... The game's 18 rating: is it down to blood, animal-skinning and shooty bits entirely? Or is there sweary sex, etc? Cos its so much fun that id love the boy to play and while im not fussed about the shooty survivalist bits in theory, im one of those parents who wont tolerate fucking shitting swearing.

I don't mind a bit of swearing and that in a game, but in this one more than any other, I felt that there was no real need for it- this could easily have been all ages and lost nothing of the gameplay and enjoyment.

I do get the impression that with videogames, much like video films back in the eighties, the 18 certificate is a desirable badge of honour, aimed at attracting just-pubed males. That's fine though, we grownups need our thrills too. But id love games consoles to have a clever content-filter, cos from what ive seen it would be much appreciated by small boys. He was begging me to let him play on after the horse bit, and i had to refuse, pointing out the rating and saying it had stuff in that wasn't right for him to see. Then i hid it on the high shelf, cos the little bugger is nothing if not tenacious...

Bought the game over the weekend.  Loving it so far (but then I usually do love most of Rockstar Games' output).  The only thing that is a bit of a shame is the multiplayer Free Roam mode.  Everytime I join a free roam session it just seems to be full of people who seem to want to ride around shooting each other (mostly me)and not posse-ing up and exploring as I was expecting, so not really tried that aspect(interested in trying the co-op missions).

I Have joined some of the quick games such as Gang Shootout and Gold Rush which are great fun! (mainly as I was expecting people to keep shooting me all the time...)

Ha! I've been very good and law abiding so far! I haven't killed anyone out of hand (well, I shot a deputy by accident once and hit killed a woman by riding over her on my horse- but it was an accident!).
I may try being bad if I give this another run through.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a bad guy in it. Apart from the incident with the nun and that flowers mission I've pretty much abided by the rules. Ok, so this has involved killing about a 1000 people who shot at me first, killing wild animals-even bunnies- who didn't do anything and traintracking a woman in her underclothes who tried to steal Bad Horse II, but it's the old west and bad stuff happens.

Some people just ask for it though.

Did the shooting birds from the train thing last night.

Some advice required- I'm not 100% on using the dead eye thing, in fact, I've lost my last two quick draws! Any advice on the best way to use it?

Also the chariot cart racing was great fun!
Title: Re: Red Dead Redemption
Post by: mogzilla on 06 August, 2010, 11:21:23 AM
i find the dead eye easier on the first level when you just slow down and the third, when you choose when to lock ...as to the quick draw sometimes theyre just faster than me! try not to draw first in dead eye that seems to be the death nell from what i see

With the quick draw you have to click when the x is small and white, fills your blue bar up faster. If you click on the opponents gunhand you fill your bar completely and win with a disarm which gives you honour points. Or you can just target their head lots.

My quickdraw tactic was always just to draw as soon as the slo-mo kicks in then spamming every bullet into their crotch. Functional and amusing.

Yup.  Every player has what MS has termed a Gamertag.  This is effectively your Xbox identity.  Difficulty being as soon as you go online you have to change the one you have been using because it is invariably taken.  What then happens is you spend ages trying to come up with something that retains some form of relevence as MS suggestions would have lead to you being known as Inverted Meat or Purple Whizzy...

Did the
Fort Mercer
attack mission this morning when I was supposed to be working. Great bloody fun!

Currently also trying to kill wolves. It's rather unsporting of them to attack in groups and from behind when I'm knifing one of their pack!

Killed
18 bears
last night, including one with the blade (though I did try and lasso by mistake til it tore my face off) and shot the
last buffalo
to death on the
Great Plains
.

Fortunately the
bear killing
was interrupted by a passing wagon which the
bruins
decided to attack for a bit, allowing me easy access to brainshots. I'm a bigger menace to endangered species than BP and Lara Croft combined.

I'm hopefully in sight of the end now, just have the Blackwater missions to start so reckon that will be the last third/quarter.

I've been playing this again over the past few weeks. Finally completed it 100% Originally completed it with 99.4%!!! Which was quite annoying. Turned out the bounty hunting missions are worth 0.1% each. And killing a bear with a knife was fucking hard! final score 6-1 to the bears!!!
I don't have xbox live, but I hear the zombie version will be released on a disc like the GTA expansions. (here's hoping!) One more game on the christmas list.

Just got the Undead Nightmare pack, looking forward to giving it a try. I've blown my own trumpet on this plenty, but I worked on RDR (parp) but this I didn't. Means it'll be a Red Dead experience I can sit down and play fresh, as a gamer and enjoy just the same as everyone else (without it feeling like overtime), which I'm quite excited about.

Yeah, really enjoyed it! I particularly like that they've gone for the 'headshots the only true stopper' school of zombie thought, you can blast away at their bodies for an age but if you don't take the head off they keep on coming. I generally play RDR without any aim assists and it can get pretty tense when they're all bearing down on you, dead eye really comes into its own.

Yeah, if you played either of the GTAIV episodes that's pretty much the scale to expect. Same map, all new missions and storyline with a few hours game time even ignoring the side activities and new achievements. I honestly don't think anyone does dlc with the kind of value that Rockstar do.

Just seem to have got stuck with no more missions available and the bridges to the south still down.

Looking at mission lists, there should be one available at Fort Mercer (missing souls?) where there is a guy posting a missing persons poster, but it hasn't showed up yet...

Even tried starting a new game, and playing through to Fort Mercer again, but nothing.

Any RDR players have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

Steve

In Undead Nightmare? Sounds like you've got to the timed mission, there's one point where (probably not even a spoiler)
West Dickens says he's going to make arrangements to go to Mexico, after that point it's a few game days before his mission blip appears again. Meeting up with him at that point unlocks the Mexico strand.
It's a case of either doing the lost soul side missions in the meantime or just saving repeatedly to progress time. I've never been a fan of the timed stuff, but I can see why they do it as it prompts you to mess around with the side activities. Hope that helps!

Managed to figure it out - I guess I'd just not collected enough stuff for Dickens the first time round, and the conservation map popped up eventually (just over the border of the map, but still accessible)
