Even if it isn't a con, the sheer amount of free publicity this has given Nintendo is unbelievable. I've seen stories on this pretty much everywhere I go, and even here we've had 3-4 threads on the name change.

Of course it's not all good press, but the vast majority of stories seem to be of the "Japanese company calls their console a Wii-rd name" variety rather than the overheated & melodramatic reaction I've seen on some gaming sites.

They've got a long way to go to make the name what they seem to want it to be - like Yahoo or iPod, a word that's heavily associated with a particular activity - but the attention it's gained them is a good start.
