Megazine / Meg 382 - Life in the Big City
11 March, 2017, 11:03:40 AM
Great cover by Jake Lynch - I would love a poster (or the original) of this. Superb, and arguably what the spine of The Mega Collection should have looked like.

Absolutely loving the Meg at the moment with all Dreddverse stories even if somewhat tenuously.

Boo Cook and Eglington are on a one off Dredd.
Havn features gorgeous Lynch art with effectively 3 full page splashesin the 9 pages. Fortitude meets 2000AD.
Anderson continues as does the ever wonderful Lawless.

Articles are an interview with Kim Raymond which I look forward to reading with interest given my somewhat harsh comments in the past, feature on new Dredd as a wolf story and an interview with Ben Wheatley, not quite sure why as this isn't Fangoria but maybe the subject matter makes it appropriate for inclusion.

Advert for Dominion but no start date and the floppy has 4 more 3Rillers to reread.

Is it just my imagination or has the paper quality on the floppy deteriorated slightly with this issue?

Once again the Meg hits its straps and is in the best shape it has seen for many a year. I really love the absence of nonDredd creator owned material and perhaps, if cashflow demands a deal could be done for creator rights in stories set within Dredd's world rather than sweary vampires and ostriches.

Prog / Prog 2022 - Light 'Em Up
11 March, 2017, 10:50:32 AM
Wrap up prog with a decent Ben Willsher SinDex cover.

Judge Dredd one-off by Arthur Wyatt and Tom Foster.
One-off SinDexwith Yeowell again and final parts of the current books for Kingmaker, The Order and Kingdom all of which leave plenty of room for future stories as expected.

I wish there were more definitive stories that came to a very final conclusion in the prog but everyone seems way too busy building their own universes with never ending sagas.
Aah, Ant Wars.

Oh, just to mention, Kingdom has enough brutality for most Squaxx and next prog is as trailed but with Future Shocks and Deadworld (yayy).

Decent end of run prog , looking forward to most of next week's contents.

Prog / Prog 2020 - Mega-City Meltdown
24 February, 2017, 06:09:25 PM
Turned up today along with the birthday special.
Cover confused me somewhat. Lovely painted Dredd image by Ryan Brown with the exception that Dredd looks like he is smiling (at least to me). Bit offputting.
New Dredd story starts with some decent and at times very gruesome art by Boo Cook. Based on Nerve Centre mention that 2023 is a jumping on prog (with Bink returning) this is, at nost a 3 parter. Feels a bit cliche at the moment with the old sacrificing victims to preserve the villain's youth trope but I may be wrong. We'll see.
SinDex wraps quite nicely with usual humour and dubious taste.
Kingmaker and The Order both move towards their respective climaxes and Kingdom gives another curveball cliffhanger which could potentially have huge ramifications for the strip.
Letters page and Droid Life round out another excellent prog as has been the case all year.

Other Reviews / Fink Legacy

Just a quick note in praise of this.
Colour centrespreads for Fink and Destiny's Angels for the first timesince the Prog, I believe.
Lovely volume all round showcasing the different stories writers can tell with essentially the same character.

Prog / Prog 2009: The Cannibal Run

Good Dredd cover by Staz Johnson & Gary Caldwell.

Dredd wraps up nicely with potential to revisit. Nice old school feel to Judge Orville's arc - silly but works.
Something happens in Flesh!! Honest. Overblown showdown with Pasthis Sellbydate or something concludes and half decent cliffhanger sets up final part (with inevitable cliffhanger presumably). Not a bad episode in isolation, tainted by the 8 that preceded it.
Hunted concludes much as expected, the hunt goes on. Good stuff.
Future shock looks okay, will read in a minute.
Savage has lost my interest. Dialogue too stilted and Patrick Goddard's art is just too dark making it a tough read. Might steel myself for a Savage reread over Christmas but probably not.
Overall not a bad prog. Flesh, Savage and Counterfeit Girl end next week ahead of the Christmas prog so all is good in a fortnight.

Megazine / Meg 378 - Face the Future of Law Enforcement.
12 November, 2016, 12:11:07 PM
Excellent Ryan Brown Dredd cover evoking Jim Murray to my mind, if a little less cartoony.
Once again an extremely welcome all Dreddverse Meg!

More supernaturally weirdness in Dredd feels a little samey with the Prog coming together but interesting seeing Milligan and Trevallion teamed.
Blunt - sorry pass
Angelic ticks all my boxes. Love tough Cursed Earth stories and this revision of the Angel Gang has it in spades as well as the interest in the characters and how they become our familiar band of psychos.
Anderson concludes but is back next time with a new story.
Features are Thrill Power Overload takes us up to Trifecta, interview with Glyn Dillon and an obituary for Steve Dillon. Dreddlines is back

Floppy is more SinDex covering up to prog 1533 and 2007. I have no recollection of these stories at all and don't remember the boys meeting a smaller Michael Clarke Duncan (although I believe he has cropped up in 2000AD before).
More SinDex next time too apparently but said to be the last one. Shame, these have read well as collected volumes, much better than in the Prog ironically given their history in reprint.

Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions

Per a suggestion on the main thread by Robert Ellis we can use this thread to list stories we would like to see included in any extension to the Mega Collection. Obviously any suggestions at this stage may still be included in the main run as not all volumes have been revealed but it is safe to say we know 80% of what will be in there.

Megazine / Meg 377: Psink or Swim

Jam packed Meg and all Dreddverse just how I like it.
Very good Dylan Teague cover of movie Anderson who starts a two parter solo story. Good seeing the new universe being slowly developed and I can see these stories in my mind's eye when watching the film.
Monkey Business concludes. A fun tale that had much of what makes Dredd great with the sort of weird and wacky characters Dredd used to run into on a regular basis before it all got a bit serious. To be fair, losing 80% of your population will make things tough for a while although the post Apocalypsse War stories were still romps generally.
Blunt trundles on - sorry not for me.
Angelic is back. Sorry that should read; ANGELIC IS BACK!! Along with Lawless and Insurrection the best thing in the Meg for years. We meet an alternate Angel gang with the presence of a prominent bowler hat and metal capped dimwit. Hoping Pa Angel continues to establish his terrifying reputation that has been tarnished by Wagner. The Angel Gang of the Judge Child and Fink were easily my favourite Dredd villains but their reincarnation and comedy use of Mean has diminished them a la Dark Judges so this grim, gritty yet darkly comic take on them fills me with joy. Brilliant stuff.
Thrill Power update contines up to the end of 2011, so Day of Chaos etc. Feels a little too much like a listing of contents, would like more insight but those we do get are worthwhile.
Haven't read the two interviews yet but losing sweary vampires has given us a proper 64 pages of Meg with 38 strip pages, 16 pages of articles and even a letters page. I suspect budgets won't allow it but I think the Meg would get a much better reception if it were like this every month.
Floppy contains Malone and the subsequent SinDex tale. Even that struggles to fit running onto the inside cover.
A fabulous double treat of Prog and Meg today, best for ages.

Prog / Prog 2003: On The Warpath

Cracking Willsher Rogue Trooper cover takes me back 20 years.
Dredd concludes in a satisfying manner. Despite dodgy first episode it was good fun and did indeed feel somewhat 'old school', especially Anderson's face.
Flesh has another chapter in the Tesco/Unilever saga. Damned imported dinosaur meat. Really liked the artwork throughout this week. Good stuff (to coin a phrase).
Hunted has Rogue front and centre and I hate to say it but physically he looks a little odd to me. Maybe PJ has done this on purpose but in several frames he just looks 'off'. Prefer the Rogue on the cover. Probably should keep my mouth shut as I know PJ reads the board and I have huge respect and admiration for his skills. His tutorial on his homepage was utterly fascinating, sufficient that I have it permanently open on a tab.
Haven't read the other two yet but once again a 7 page Flesh spills us onto the back cover.

Prog / Prog 1994: For the attenshun of Judge Dredd
13 August, 2016, 12:57:00 PM
Ave I just bagged the prog thread. Another fine issue with a curious development in Dredd. It looks like the alien Wagner finally got out of Johnny Alpha's head had infected PJ Maybe or something. No doubt all will be revealed.

Prog / Subs notebook
14 July, 2016, 09:56:57 PM
Just received this in the post (thought it might be my Cursed Earth copy).
Apologies if there is already a thread about this but I was very pleasantly surprised how beautifully finished it is and the pen is decent too.
These subs gifts can be a bit of a mixed bag (although always welcome and Tharg is under no obligation to give us anything) but absolutely love this year's treat.
Thanks Tharg.
