What comic to buy the wife!

With reference to Uncle's post (see link).

I'm thinking of giving my wife one trade, or one comic to read just so she can understand the fasination that I have with them.

I have NO idea what to try her out on.

She has few hobbies that convert to the comic form. TV-wise, she likes things like Friends (and other US sit-coms) and ER. British programs like "Changing Rooms" also go down well with her.

She hates Trek, but doesn't mind Buffy & Angel (but I doubt the comics would be up her street).

Any ideas?

Halo Jones is probably TOO spacey for her.

She used to watch Hill Street Blues, and knows of Batman, so I might go with Gotham Central as that's "easy" to read.

Strangers in Paradise maybe? Google that or Terry Moore and there's details on the official web-site. First books quite decently priced as well.

Bone is good as well.

McNulty

Could she be a potential Dante fan?

You could go out on a limb and buy her Howard Chaykins (sp?) 'Black Kiss' - well, you never know.

I find Preacher to be a good one for the ladies wjo don't normally like that sort of thing. Just make sure that the romance angle hooks her before she's put off by the horrible-ness of it all.

Toughie. GHOST WORLD, maybe? Have a look at the GNs reviewed here, you're bound to find *something* suitable...

What about Sandman, I've just rembered that the wife telling me that she used to like that when in college (or try a sneaky approach by starting her on 'American Gods' by Gaiman and then trying the comic).

And as I said in the other link, 'Egypt' by vertigo was the only comic that the wife has read since I've known her.

Agh! She made me turn Ghost World (the movie) off ? way through, so I think that's definately out.
Possibly Bone (might be a bit too Fantasy) Strangers In Paradise looks like being the safest bet so far (and gives me an excuse to buy it).

I also thought about throwing her in at the deep end and giving her "Understanding Comics"- but figure that doing so could well push her way too far in the wrong direction.

What about Promethea?

Promethea's way too much hard work, all the magic stuff after the first book is a bit of a 'mare. SiP is OK but not exactly the cure-all "wimmin's comic" it's sometimes seen as. If she likes cop shows, I say give her Top Ten, which is easily readable...

J-Bo-1

I thought about Top 10, but it might be a bit too Superhero-y and I want to avoid that genre as much as possible (although Gotham Central is border line)

Can I suggest Watchmen?
Even though it's got a superhero element, they're almost all just loonies who dress up funny.
The whole thing is basically a whodunnit.

Also, my wife read and really enjoyed Grant Morrison and Philip Bond's Vertigo one-off Kill Your Boyfriend, which should still be findable.
(She still doesn't read comics, though.)

KYB-F yeah, got that... might be a possibility. At least it's not called Kill Your Husband :-p

Art

The only comics I've ever gotten Heather to read have been From Hell (Alan Moore), League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Alan Moore), Ghost World (Daniel Clowes) and 20th Century Eightball (Daniel Clowes).

I guess these all have pretty broad appeal, since they have all been made into movies or are being made into movies*

*Not strictly true for 20th Century Eightball, only one story "Art School Confidential", is being filmed.http://secure.giantrobot.com/graphics/00000001/enidblack.jpg">
