Title: BATMAN White Knight
Post by: Proudhuff on 08 December, 2017, 07:59:24 PM
soooo, finally someone writes a Batman story that asks a few questions and challenges a whole load of assumptions.
This is the first Batman story I've enjoyed since Killing Joke.
Sean Murphy's story telling and art are exceptional, unfortunately the reboot button will be hit by DC at the end or Batty will come out on top yawn... Sean address's so much that is crap with the whole Gotham thing, it might be hard putting this joker back in the pack.

Yes, really enjoying this too Huff.
I've a very, very select non-2000AD pull list these days, and this is by far the best title I'm currently reading.
I've always been a huge fan of SGM's stylish art, and was happy to discover he's an accomplished writer too.

Not sure myself if a reset button will be pressed by issue 8- this is its own beast, locked within a separate continuity from any other series.

Regardless, highly recommended from the 3 issues I've read so far.
I've a feeling this will be a best seller collected edition for years to come.

Read the first three issues and am enjoying it.

I'm seeing it as a "what if" type tale, outside of continuity.

has anyone else suggested that there's two Harleys? I love the idea but don't read a lot of batman.

Same here. Very impressed with the three issues so far. Only picked it up because of SGM's artwork, if it was anybody else i may of give it a miss. Will definietly get it the tpb when that comes out just for the artwork.

(Ok I'll say it)Would love to see SGM do art for a Dredd story.

Case in point and SGM draws a mean chin. I think SGM's vehicles are some of the best drawn in comics atm.

I believe His Verdant Majesty has expressed his approval of MURPH-E's efforts but the ungrateful droid hasn't reciprocated with much interest in contributing to Tharg's mighty organ.

I've read Batman consistently for a few years now (G. Morrison & S. Snyder runs), but this is the first time two different Harley's have been mentioned to my knowledge.

White Knight is of course an 'Elseworlds' universe / continuity; Jason has been revealed to be the 1st Robin, and
Alfred
died in issue 3.

I'd love to see SGM working on Dredd too, but it probably won't happen for the same reason we won't be getting Jock back on Dredd: $

Yeah but judging by those its a real shame - bloody lovely, especially the lawmaster one.

The Eagle head and beak as Lawmaster front is so obvious, but I can't think of anyone else who has done that?

Sorry but I keep coming back to this image... there is soo much to like here: the confidence that the 'speed lines' are drawn with, the little chips thrown up, the bullet explosions, the bike design: beak and wings!, the framing, that chin... now if only they were Pepper Pot Blocks in the background and the chain had the right number of links

Latest issue of this continues the intriguing and challenging approach of the early ones, edge of the seat how this run ends! :o :D

Read issue 5 last Knight, it's really strong stuff.
Suspenseful too- no idea where it's going to land yet.

It's a solid recommend for anyone with even a passing interest in Batman.

I read very few superhero genre comics this year, but this was one of them and pretty freakin great to boot.

Delighted that there's a sequel planned for 2019.

Second Joe The Barbarian, that would have fitted nicely into the prog.

Plonked myself in my yellow IKEA chair yesterday afternoon with a pot of coffee and shed load of catch-up comics, including issue 1 of Curse of The White Knight.

I'm a bit torn on this one. I genuinely loved the original run, it felt fresh and punchy, and quickly evolved into something more than a "What if?", but its own really interesting pocket universe.

Issue 1 of the sequel not only loses that immediacy, but the set-up feels far more forced.
Could be that SGM moved too quick producing the follow-up, but fortunately the art remains flawless at least.

I'll stick with the series for the time being regardless.
Frankly, I'd probably buy it just for the art anyway.

The first issue really felt like an extended set up, reexplaining the end of the first series and only slightly set up the new story. And Even though it's still called 'White Knight'. I'm not super thrilled Joker is still integral to the story.

Also, this time around there are going to be one-shot specials highlighting other characters. The first one is about Von Freeze, and it's not drawn by Murphy. Which makes this go around feel a lot less special then the first series. More commercial, if that makes sense.

We shall see.

Picked up Issue two, and well, a lot of talking then a lot of explosions...not feeling the same frisson of the unexpected that was in the first series, still will stick with it, anyone else reading it?

I liked White Knight but didn't love it.
To be honest,
I thought they bottled it with the Joker thing. I'd have preferred it if the 'cure' had stuck and this alternate form of the Joker had really fulfilled his potential.
I also thought it would have worked better as a stand alone 'graphic novel' rather that as a six issue mini. The six issue format made the pacing a little odd and it felt a bit stretched in parts, and rushed in others.
The two Harley's thing was very clever though.
This ^^^ It would have been stunning if
the 'cure' had stuck and this alternate form of the Joker had really fulfilled his potential.
and there was a whole Batworld where
Bruce was slowly stripped of all his money, power, acolytes, bat-bits and the Joker and Harley became and stayed the darlings of the metro-elite and Batty just couldn't take it and goes as crazy as the Joker was...
Finished issue 3 last night; I'm back on board.

The set-up is getting far more interesting and the world building is just fantastic.
Love Azrael's tweaked design and the call-backs to Knightfall.

As with the first series, we're once again in the realm of 'anything goes';
Bruce's
identity has now been revealed, Harley is
pregnant with Joker's twins
and
Jim
just got shish kebab-ed.

As for the artwork; I think SGM is getting better and better.
Joker's expression of comprehension and disgust as he read the Arkham secret in flashback sequence has to be one of he best panels of 2019.
SGM is THE most exciting comic book artist of our times.

Issue 4 was consumed last night, and I'm happy to report the standard remains peerless.

SGM is to a Batman comic as Wagner & MacNeil are to Dredd.

Second that, another issue and another
death?
This is what the big two should be dishing up.

Finished Curse of the White Knight during lock-down, and have to say it was a thrilling conclusion;
Several major characters dead and a revealed Bruce Wayne now serving hard time
.
There is definitely more mileage in this pocket universe, so I hope SGM returns to it someday.

He currently has a crowd funding graphic novel available; https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-plot-holes/x/18539562#/

Not too bowled over by the pitch, but I had to back it, love his stuff.
The price of fandom comes in at around €60 in this case however - and that's only for the soft cover option.
Bloody international shipping fees.
