Title: MEG 373 : STATE OF THE UNION
Post by: Buttonman on 11 June, 2016, 11:47:05 AM
An unprecedented 9am mail drop from my Paisley postie - must be an Albania fan.

Excellent Dreddlines with three long letters, one great, but sadly no Editor comments.

All strips bubbling along but the standout has to be Dredd's 'People Like Us' the recently trumpeted Brexit special. It's good fun with cracking Dave Taylor art. I moaned recently about Irish politics getting too wide an airing in the Prog but this is more like the great satire 2000ad has always been known for. Great call back to a 30 year old story and a funny, if somewhat predictable, pay off.

Still to read the runner up placed entry in the Dark Judges writing comp (Andrew Hawnt) and the slightly reduced 17 pages of 'Realm of the Damned'.

This was a highly enjoyable read today , the highlight as ever
was Lawless - as ever ,superb artwork ,and features a great twist in the story
Blunt is looking to be a good story - and is getting better and better
Dredd is an excellent cross-over story - which I am really enjoying
and is providing a real back-ground to the Texas City / Brit Cit machinations
that you can only find in the Megazine ( so a must read )
Realm of Damned is - for me , just so-so - I cant wait to see the saga end soon , sadly

Just how good is Lawless. I've never worked out how the Dabnett droid maintains the output levels he does, especially when he can knock it out of the park as well.

Not read all the Meg yet, but wan't to give a shameless pimping heads up to a mate of mine, Andrew Hawnt, whose prose Dredd story appears this month.

It's a cracker of a Dark Judges tale, with just a hint of John Smith about it -I'll say no more, I don't want to spoil it.

But if you like what you read, you can find more of Andy's stuff here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Andrew-Hawnt/e/B0050MLM1Y)...

...and a Blog here (http://andrewhawnt.blogspot.co.uk/).

Well done, Andy. Hats off to you mate!

Enjoyed the Meg Realm of the Damned and Blunt were fun for day off me but the best was Killer. B&w art and a psycho anti-hero bar none. fabulous.

Cover:  Eye catching and very current, should draw some interested glances from the passing comic fan

Dredd: The plot thickens, but as expected, Texas are up to no good!

Blunt:  Enjoying this so far.

Realm Of The Damned:  Up till now, I've been enjoying it greatly, dark, nasty, uncompromising and horrific.  All the things I like in a horror tale.  However....this month I have to question why the 4000 year old mummy talks like a 15 year old east London chav.  It grated quite badly, and while I'm STILL not offended, I am a bit dissapointed in the characterisation.  Nice to see a fight with a bit more bite to it though.

Lawless: Love it.

Text Tale:  Was ok.

Dredd again: Nice wee one off, and a link back to one of the early tales that greatly amused me at the time.

I suspect someone who'se been around for 4000 years has undergon quite a few personality changes and could well have become capable of just saying "Fuck it, i'm going to try and be like the tit who'se on the TV right now. Whats his name, Dyer?"...

Yeah, that's true.  Still, it just stood out in a not so good way to me.... dunno, maybe it's just me being a bit picky with it now?

Well it was suggested in an early story but whether that is the case or not I am not sure has been definitively resolved yet. I think this has a bit more mileage in it.

Er. While it was strongly suggested this was the case in the last part of the first series it's made completely explicit in this month's episode.

Hope the feature articles not at a end, they are what set the Meg apart from 2000ad, creator interviews, past and present, history of comics and 2000ad, Dredd movie making, what  ever, I always find them more then interesting and not filler, if I have a gripe creator owned section is too long by a third if your not in to the story, other then that love the Meg, is like a summer special every month, really look forward to it!

More American Reaper please, it rocks!

Cover: Took me a minute...daa

Dredd:  Texas are up to no good! The south will rise again huh? Not if Joe and Rico have anything to do with it. That CJ reminds me of Hilary...

Blunt: Enjoying this, but I sometimes think some darker hues in that palette   would add depth

Realm Of The Damned: Up till now, I've been a bit meh, but its fine if over long at times

Lawless: So its all tie-in, hmmmm, still say there's a H&S issue with that ponytail, not to mention  nights in to wash it  ;)

Text Tale:  I don't do Dark Judges, they all were encased in my world and have never returned lalalalala can't hear you

Dredd again: Nothing wrong with seeing the UK from another perspective Butt'man however you're right about this tale

That Dark Judges text story was brilliant. It could have won the competition -- a difficult decision for Matt, no doubt. Give it a go.

The Meg has thankfully been more hit than miss this month. Loved the satire. Henry Flint as ever rules. Z

I've not read Insurrection but have loved Lawless from the start. How much of a big deal am I missing here? Is the story better for the reveal or are they two very different stories now linked by a character.

The Meg on solid form with the exception of Helm of the Chinny Goo Jaw or whatever its called. My heart sank as I turned (swiped) to it and to be frank I barely read it I had so little interest. By contrast Lawless is flawless.

Two beautiful Dredds both with absolute eye appeal and one good addtion to the ongoing storyline in the Prog and another felt like it was pleasently from an older time.

Blunt is beginning to shape into a bit of a winner so.

Curiously I did miss the text variety with only a decent story set around characters I have no interest in. Seems l like the balance it normally has. Mind since the replacement is a Taylor + Edington Dredd seems silly to moan!

Insurrection wasn't bad. It had wonderful Warhammeresque artwork and an engaging plot. Mind you conceptually the idea of massive forces of Spacemarine SJS Judges was a bit hard to believe considering the Biggish Meg is in Judge shortage crises mode every time Joe Dredd or some other law bod takes 2 minutes off duty to go for a leak! Those covers are great but I can imagine a brief glance at them on a newsagents stand, they kinda look like a fascist magazine...Brazil provides a slightly different context I would suggest to how we perceive those grim Dredd visages.

TBH, I have no issue with the whole 'space empire' thing.

It seems entirely plausible to me that MC-1 exerts little or no influence over a wide-ranging confederation of off-world populations, whose authorities retain judge-like regalia and power structures for historic and/or pragmatic reasons but feel little or no allegiance to the authority which founded them. A lot like the post-Empire constituents of the British Empire, for example.

Having missed a bit of previous Lawless, how big a shock was the Freely reveal? As someone stated in a previous post, I gather it has been hinted at, but for me it was a real WTF moment!

I must admit to being completely clueless ... I'd forgotten every character from Insurrection, so the reveal didn't mean a thing to me.  Thankfully, the writing on Lawless is good enough that it reads well, without needing to understand that particular aspect.
