Yes, it's true.

The local comics shop held a comics creator meeting. Artists, writers, inkers, letterers all showed up to hang out and chat about their projects.

And suddenly Mark Millar's name came up. A fellow (actually) mentioned him as his inspiration.

That was a bit of a shock. I almost spit my fizzy drink out through my nostrils.

Of course we all know where this leads when 2000AD comics nerds are gathered, and I've seen/heard some great Mark Millar bashing on this forum and at cons I've gone to. Totally different here. Nothing I could have imagined (though part of this probably comes from my disconnect from the comics "scene" in general; this forum is the only part of the comics world I frequent).

So this group, about twenty nerds in all, went on and on about how great Mark Millar is, how profound, all that. How he's revolutionizing comics, how he might be the "best" writer to emerge in the last however many years - seriously, I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

I said nothing, however, as it was my first time meeting these people and I didn't want call them all dumb fuckheads and ruin any potential friendships that might develop (I'll let them know my opinion when I know them better). So instead I got up and wandered through the store, dug around through some back issues until they stopped.

Anyway, I thought I'd share this horrifying experience.

General / Why this forum is awesome.
21 March, 2012, 12:05:30 AM
I've just finished reading prog 1771.

Since I relocated to the States, smallbluething has been purchasing my progs* for me every week, and sending them in small batches so I don't get too far behind on my thrill-power consumption.

But try as he could, he could not secure a copy of the McMahon variant; so, without even mentioning it to me, he cast around for someone who could find it - and Tordelback, all the way in Ireland, grabbed me not one but two copies (one to remain bagged, of course) and posted them to me.

That's why this forum is awesome.

Thanks fellows. Both of you are true gents.

*I can't afford a sub over here, and none of the local shops are worth the bother.

Thought a few of you might enjoy seeing these.

While I was organizing my old Savage Sword of Conan the Barbarian comics, I happened to flip through an issue - and found myself a couple of old Robusters and Robohunter (and Judge Dredd, kinda) adverts.

The adverts are on the back page of Savage Sword #104, from September 1984. Robusters gets the actual illustration, and Robohunter is at least represented by a logo - but Dredd has only a short blurb that says "Judge Dredd gives instant justice to offenders". So...they weren't selling him hard. But then again, robots were all the rage in the B&W American comics scene at the time, and Bud Plant - whose advert this is, was the biggest distributor of B&W indie comics until the B&W bust in the late 80's.

Here's the whole page advert; a closeup to follow...

Off Topic / One Mississippi...Two Mississippi...
12 March, 2012, 05:51:35 AM
A peculiar thought got stuck in my brain today, and I couldn't quite poke it free.

When British children play hide-and-seek - how the hell do they count out the time for their friends to hide?!

Of course, when I engaged in a game of hide-and-seek, I counted out "One Mississippi...Two Mississippi..." and so forth until I finally screamed "READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!!!" at the top of my lungs.

So please tell me, what did you fellows use to count off seconds?

Help! / Word Press/Comic Press Help Needed!
06 March, 2012, 08:45:48 PM
Hello folks - is there anyone out there who might be willing to help me out in setting up a Word Press page that looks like this: http://bearmageddon.com/ (but a bit simpler)? It's for my El Bigote comic (previews here:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/El-Bigote/268079929911650); the friend I had helping me did what good friends usually do - and bailed  ::).

I am just hopeless when it comes to this stuff.

I can provide all the art content, I'd just need help putting it together. I'm a poor bastard, so I'm looking for someone who can do this out of the goodness of his/her heart or for a small fee.

Thanks in advance.

Hello fellows.

I've just got my San Diego Comic Con badge (pro pass - cheers for that FQP, Paragon and others).

By chance, are any of you going? (I seem to recall Michael Carroll going last year) If you are, let me know and we'll get together. I'll have my car and can show you round town and all of that.

And Tharg, what Droids are going?

Hello all - I've previously asked for advice in getting a web comic up and running. Well, I've figured that out, and have a friend designing the page...

But I've got to admit I'm not a web comics fan. I don't like to read comics on a screen, even with a reader. I am trying to get past all of that and embrace this "newfangled" technology (and I'm not an eldster, just a really really backwards individual). So I've decided that my comc will have a limited print run to make me happy, while at the same time running online to, you know, be read by a potentially wider audience.

So...questions.

I've noticed most sites seem to run a page a week. Is this the norm? I was thinking 8 pages a month - is this okay? Or would there be too much "dead time" in between episodes?

What about color? For atmospheric purposes I feel the comic works best in B&W. Whilst it will certainly be B&W in printed form (for cost), should I have it colored for the web. I do recognize many folks' attitudes about B&W comics (and film, ect) so despite my preference for the B&W I do realize that I may need to compromise here...

So, if you have a moment, tell me what you like/want in a web comic, what keeps you going back to it. And to any of you who run web comics, do you have any pointers?

Thanks so much for your time.

Creative Common / Setting Up A Webcomic Advice...

We are the dinosaurs to webcomics nimble little furry animals. As we watch the asteroid approach they're all on kickstarter or earning money off the back of millions of views and google adwords.

Now PJ's got me thinking about webcomics. I'm close to releasing the first issue of my comic, and planned to do so with a press run of 200 copies which I plan to give out for free to get word-of-mouth going - I also plan to make the issue available free via clickwheel, myebook, ect, ect, wherever I can host it for free for readers to read for free, ect.

Going forward, might it be best to start of a website, gain a following and eventually go a kickstarter route to fund print releases? Mind, I'm very much a traditionalist and will always have print copies available, but maybe only in runs of 100 or 200 - while a webcomic, obviously, has the potential to reach many, many more readers on a comparable budget.

But I'm that comics dinosaur PJ describes. And on top of that, I'm fairly computer illiterate. Any advice that any of you have for me - from finding a place to host the comic to figuring out how to get advertising on the site or even how to draw readers to it - would be greatly appreciated. Heck, if any of you wants to partner up on that front, I'd be appreciative and willing to work out some sort of agreement.

I have my team assembled (El Chivo on art droid duty, Bolt 01 on letters), have a first episode finished and several other scripts in production to keep the strip regular whether it goes forward in print form or webcomic or both (I think both).

Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't pimp that project right now. Here are the links to El Bigote, a Gothic Mexican Horror Western Dark Comedy:

I have the strange feeling that He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named is mucking up the forum again, and in fact may be wearing several guises (at least two). Is it possible for a mod to check up on that?

As we get closer to the Dredd film's release, I think we ought to keep a lookout for you-know-who. There will (hopefully) be a lot of new traffic through the forum and I'd hate to see this place go through THAT again. A quick trip over to the film's imdb page is enough to remind me how utterly annoying that guy is.

Film & TV / Firefly (and Serenity)...
20 January, 2012, 08:36:03 PM
I know I'm reeeaaally late to the show, but despite years of friends telling me I'd love it I'd never felt bothered to watch the short-lived Firefly television series. Well...after signing up for netflix, I decided to give it a go...

Wow! What a fantastic show! The characters were great, I really got to caring about them after only a few episodes. The writing is fantastic - great stories, wonderful dialogue, emotional story lines, actual funny humor throughout. Just a great, great show.

I actually felt gutted when it ended. I can only imagine how that must have felt to Joss Whedon and the show's writers and actors, to have the show cancelled so prematurely.

Serenity was a good film, answered a lot of the show's lingering questions, but I would have liked to have seen the develop naturally over the course of a long series.

Shame on you, FOX.

It's for my El Bigote, which I've been going on about round here for a while...I really only need something simple - is there anyone who can help set this up? It would be much appreciated and I'd send you free copies of every issue of El Bigote as they come out!

Film & TV / Hobbit Trailer (and some hilarity)...
21 December, 2011, 05:32:03 AM
Right, the Hobbit Trailer has been released: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGM1RB73Zso.

Unexpectedly, we get much more than a teaser. The footage we get to see is absolutely gorgeous, and it seems Jackson has resisted making the film too dark and the book's whimsy and humor has been retained (though we do see a bit of the serious, "darker" tone that LotR the Films had running through them). The characters...look okay...not sure how I feel about "sexy" dwarfs though. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of Smaug - or the trolls at the very least - but I understand those scenes have either not been filmed as of yet or are in post production.

Of course, IMDB has been bombarded with opinions - both good and not so good - on the trailer. After a couple of minutes of post-reading, the usual IMDumBasses made themselves known.

Poster Vlad Frost on why the Hobbit will fail to live up to the LotR trilogy:

"I still have no idea how the hell these movies could even come close to being as epic as Lord of The Rings. Come on, it's about a Hobbit and some dwarves finding treasure, with some battles here and there. Unless Jackson added some massive war with the orcs that I'm unaware of, this won't even compare to the trilogy at all. I've always hated The Hobbit. Why so many people are excited about the movie surprises me, I mean I'm assuming you guys read the book right? It's not exactly an epic story."

Um...Uh...Hmmmmmmmmm.

Lads.

Davey Candlish and I are launching a horror comic magazine next year (with some HUGE surprises in store for you) and we'd like to have a horror comic review feature in each issue.

Horror comics past and present will need to be reviewed (I'd like to have a Defoe review at some point) - I'd also like horror-related small press comics to be reviewed. We have Vampire Vixens, FutureQuake Press' Something Wicked, as well as the Back From the Depths' Hallowscream, plus so many more.

Please contact me if you're interested in this, or just want more info.

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/22534/-starship-troopers-remake-on-the-way

...Although the headline of the blurb claims "remake", it's unclear right now whether or not this is a remake of the film or a more faithful adaptation of the book (which happens to be one of my favorite sci-fi novels of all time, so I'm excited at the prospect that we'll see something closer to Heinlein's vision).

Film & TV / Favorite Movie Soundtracks...
01 December, 2011, 10:12:09 PM
I've been listening to movie soundtracks lately while I write. My particular favorites at the moment are:

1. Conan the Barbarian (1982)

2. Spartacus (the new TV show)

3. Kingdom of Heaven

4. The 13th Warrior

5. Bram Stoker's Dracula

6. The Beyond (a Lucio Fulci Zombie film with a magnificent orchestral score)

7. John Carpenter's The Thing

Yours?
