For me its Frank Herbert.  The Dune books contain major themes that dominate our lives today.  Religion, politics and genetic manipulation.
Dunno how some of the Dune books would read now, some years on.  I recently read God Emperor (my Favourite) and its still very good.
2001 is a great book.  I like Asimovs robot series.  Heinlen was something I read as a teenager but couldnt really read as an adult.

Oh and obviously all the Stainless Steel Rat novels........

Didnt think it would make a good film. All those first person perspectives.  Just wouldnt work.  Agree on the Crow Road and it got Dougray Scott a part in MI2.

IMHO I think "Complicity" is his best book and its almost a straight murder mystery, well for Banks anyways.  Well thats my recomendation.  But any of them are good, some like the bridge are almost sci-fi/fantasy.  Im sure someone will disagree :-))))

Sin City is great and I still cant see how it may turn out in 3 episodes time and why hasnt anything been said about dredd from 1300 on.....
I really like 13, its pacing is good and all round is a cracking good yarn.
Tor Cyan is okay, but is rather difficult to follow as the plot seems to be all over the place.  I do like Jocks art tho'.  I am intrigued how it will fit together altho it may need a reread once complete.
Sin Dex I thought was weak.  I liked the B&W art, we need some more of it.  Sorry DXB u cant please all the people all the time :-))))

Some of these have been mentioned previosuly:
Ring - one of the few films that really scared me.
Angel Heart - I really like the twist, even if it is kinda obvious.
Blue Velvet - dennis hopper at his very best
Dune - I just like it.  Liked the book too.
Shallow grave - For christopher ecclestons performance alone
Rear Window - Its my favourite Hitchcock film, its just slick.
Also more recently seen:
Ravenous, LA Confidential, Memento - all guy peirce - The Royal Tenenbaums and Ali.  Deserve an honourable mention at least
