It's set (at least in part) in 'Liberty City' (New York), though there's no reason there won't be more than one city.... and the lead character seems to be an eastern European immigrant.

I really, really hope they sort out the dodgy controls this time. IMO on foot combat in GTA sucks, the controls are twitchy and there seems to be no weight to your character. There is no nuance or subtlety to either close combat or weapon firing, which has kind of killed the series for me in the past. They need to look at games like Halo and Ninja Gaiden for inspiration on how to implement a satisfying combat mechanic (not suggesting they turn it into an FPS, though).

If they could do that, the game would really fulfill it's potential.

America again.

I think that have done that place to death.

Well atleast it looks really really really more polished than any of it's predessors.

As for the combat, we will have to wait and see.

The combat movie in San andreas were abit of a improvment over what was in Vice City and if they have improved the control or depthof control as much as the graphics than this should be a very iompressicve fighting game as well as driving game.

Like, I was so impresssed with the battle system in 'Path of Neo'. I hope they take it a few steps further here with game.

Will it be released later this year.

Apparently well known Australian Actor Jack Thompson will be trying to bann this game. At the most from falling into the hands of minors. That could mean restricted sales, espeically in Australian.

Thats really strange considering all the questional movies I have seen this guy in. The movies that made him the powerful person he must be today.

Released on Oct 19 for 360/PS3.

I hope they sort out the targeting and the combat but this should be done as it uses a whole new engine. I also want more choice where the characters concerned. Things like designing them at the start and a whole slew of new upgradeable abilities.

I love the GTA games so this goes straight to the top of my WANT list.
Title: Re: GTA 4
Post by: ThryllSeekyr on 30 March, 2007, 12:08:00 PM
I just made a big mistake there. Apprently some American Attorney lawyer who happens to be named Jack Thompson is siteing Bill Gates and trying to bannn this game.

This same name also belonging to a well known actor Jack Thompson who most probably doesn't make it his buisness trying bann stuff like this. Of course I wouldnt' even suggest that he would be supporting stuff like this any way.
Typical Australian guy that he his. Anyway far be it from me to talk about somebody I don't even know, just like I know them. That's all I will say about that.

This looks top class. Nice opening shot of the train coming down from Liberty Heights to Red Light District took me back to the happy days when I'd just bought my PS2. I gaurantee you there's a hidden package at the top of that rollercoaster.

I must say I've never had a problem with the combat in GTA: it's always been fairly easy. I'm not keen on the customisation and task-based upgrading of abilities from San Andreas: if I wanted to spend the whole game worrying about stat points I'd buy World of Warcraft.

To me, the most important thing about the GTA games is the setting. Personal preference, but for me Vice City's the best by a mile. I hope they've learned from San Andreas that you can make the sandpit too big...

The Cosh said 'I hope they've learned from San Andreas that you can make the sandpit too big...
'
No way, they can make it bigger as far as I am concerned. Though I haven't quite got to Las Ventrus and the other place that is supposed to be San Francisco in the actual San Andreas campiagn. ( Damn, I can't get past the Russian getawy misson.)
Though I havehad alook arounbd thiewse ares using the jetpack and flying cheat and didn't like it when I hit a invsible wall not far from the notren shoreline baove Las Venturas. I would have wanted more space to roam around in.

Favorite thing, I like doing is sneaking into the Area 51 base in the desert using the Jetpack  flying at ground level to avoid mounted guns and propelling over the fence at the last moment. Stealing the large truck parked near the helicopter and flying it back to the hills near Los Santos. The is a house in those hills with a heli-pad and yes I did say flying the truck using the flying cheat. Apparently it handles real well in the air and looks cool taking off from the secret base.

It looks nice, and I'll definately give it a try, but none of the GTA games so far have held my attention. I thought maybe I just wasn't into that style of game but then I got really hooked on Saints Row, which I know GTA fans wrote off as a total rip off. So I can't really put my finger on what it is about GTA that doesn't grab me, but whatever it is I'm hoping it's sorted for this one.

Number 5 is already in the works, actually. GTA: Down and Dirty Down Under has you the protagonist as an alkie woman-beater who has to repeatedly steal his neighbours Yutes to drive into the Outback and kill as many backpackers as you possbily can. ;)

Post by: ThryllSeekyr on 31 March, 2007, 10:27:21 AM
Another thing they may wann fix is the crash, drive physics. It's like every time your in truck and you go for tumble or roll. The car or truck magically corrects itself, sometimes rolling  all by itself back onto it wheels the same way loaded dice always land.

There something strange about the way motorcylces handle them, selves. Not that I would really know much about them myself. It just that sometimes the physics don't feel right or feel to good to be true.

These things should be on par with the same amount of effort put into eevry other part of the game.

Other wise I do love these types of games. It's the escapesim.

Art, Oh I was thinking that 'Mad Max' would be good theme for a Australian version of this game.

Of Course there is also 'The Cars that ate Paris'

The entire film would make a great back story for the game which could start fom the movie's ending.

As for the ACTUAL game that is the next GTA.

It's going to be harder to steal vechiles. Requiring Niko break the window ( Like in the Warriors game with stealing car radios.) and then that vechile to be hotwired. A level of attention to detail as yet unprecedented in the GTA game series.

Pedestrians will be more interesting in that they can be seen to be speaking on mobile phones, and eating fast food while walking down the street.

Niko will be able to access the internet via
many cyber cafe now present in the game.

Rad Backer has said...

'hope they have changed the shooting mechanics for the better'

*************************************************

Quoting from the Wikipdiea content on the game.....

'The gunfight system has been reworked to feel natural by using a cover system similar to that of Gears of War and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, as the combat system in previous games was awkward and cumbersome.[29] The player can slide to cover, blind fire, and free aim. When locked on, the target's health is indicated by eight purple segments on the target circle. Players can now target individual body parts using a revamped targeting system.[30] Niko's health is represented by a green semi-circle on the left side of the radar, and a right semi-circle represents armour. If Niko gets injured, he can recover health by eating, sleeping or using medical kits. Body armour and actual health will play different roles. Health is more likely to be reduced by falls and going through the windscreen of a car when crashing, Body armour will be damaged more by gunshots and stab wounds.'

*************************************************

If thats what you wanted.

I hd no problems with the current shooting/fisti-cuffs system used in 'GTA : San Andreas'

A colleague of mine did some of the testing for this so has had full playthrough, he's obviously not allowed to give away any details but he did confirm that it's absolutely incredible. Rockstar have apparently been nice enough to put his name in the credits too, which happens less than you'd think when developers outsource their QA testing.

They have renamed the 'Lincoln Tunnel the Booth tunnel after the murderer of Abraham Lincoln.

I guess it pays to be a Assasin.

They have renamed 'Coney Island', 'Firefly' Island. I hope that doesn't mean Rockstar North like the same Sc/Fi series. Perhaps are working on game for them too.

Post by: Keef Monkey on 15 April, 2008, 12:00:55 PM
To be honest I'd go with 360, and that's not just me being a fanboy because I have one! At the point that my friend was testing it they were unable to get the graphics running as smoothly on the PS3 as on the 360, because despite the PS3 being in theory the more powerful console it has bandwidth problems when it comes to shifting that power around and accessing it quickly enough, and that's why the game got delayed for yonks. I'm sure it'll be sorted by now though, but still it gives me more confidence in the 360 one. Plus even if the differences are unnoticable the 360 is getting downloadable expansion packs and the PS3 isn't so that should swing it!

I'm all for the puns me, I genuinely find myself laughing at them, such is the juvenile level of my humour.

If you want a (for the moment, at least) superior games library, a better joypad, and a more refined online experience go for an Xbox.

If you want a machine with a built in Blu Ray player and more reliable/stable hardware, go for a PS3.

Personally I'd reccommend a 360 elite.

Post by: satchmo on 15 April, 2008, 03:52:19 PM
I love all the stupid puns and profanisaurus terms they put into GTA!
It's the very British sense of humour they put into them that speaks to me like Skool Daze used to when I was a kid, and is one of the greatest achievements of the series. And it makes me smile wondering what Americans make of The Camel's Toe or Sprunk :)

I'm getting it on Xbox, it does feel like the lead format this time, what with the extra content coming up and stuff.

I just think it becomes more incongruous the longer the series goes and the more realistic the graphics get.

I smirked the first time around, but now I find it just tedious.

I quite like the graphics as they were from the first game. Though the improvements, I find the simple artistic style very chamring.

You know i could well imagine one of the famous 2000AD artists doing the graphics for a game like this.

For instance..... Mike MacMahon.

I do feel that with the developers being based in Scotland it's surprising they've never had some sort of GTA Glasgow expansion pack, although it would probably need re-dubbed for the states.

I've noticed that also.

I was hopin for something more Celtic.

Slaine.. perhaps.

That had been my pet idea for dream game ( Not sure if thsi was anybody else') ever since I first played GTA : Liberty City in a computer Cafe and while had at the same time picked up copy of and started reading the 'Time Killer' and 'The Horned God' reprints a few years back.

It's why I mentioned Mike MacMahon earlier. It's his art work that may best suited that medium.

of corse it ttoally reworked as a archaic fantacy and not have any of the modern contrivances of every other GTA game.

apparantly if you like a song in the game you can phone a special number with your ingame mobile and get a special code.  You then go to amazon and get the song with the code, no mention if this is free or at a doscount price but a nice idea to bring interaction into the real world.  As long as they dont expect you to do a drive by to get it.

Seems like it would be a good way for developers to get cheaper content - sign up unknown comedians/bands/artists/photographers and use their material to furnish comedy clubs/radio stations/galleries in the game.

My third gaming related post of the evening:
Anyone signed up to the Rockatar social club?  Apparently they'll be running leaderboards to show game-time taken to finish the storyline and complete 100% with little in-game prizes.  There'll be other stuff like events and maps marking the most violent parts of town, favorite weapons etc.
Either a harmless bit of stat gathering or big brother monitoring and logging your gaming habits depending on how you look at it.

Every sign-up before 29/04/08 also gets entered into a sweepstake to win a GTA style portrait.

Title: Re: GTA 4
Post by: Bongo Jack on 29 April, 2008, 03:27:16 PM
No - you're wierd because you're Welsh.

I sat and watched the in-game telly for about half an hour - Republican Space Rangers and its racism and homophobic male bonding will no doubt win over many Halo fans.  Ricky Gervaise does some stand-up routine from about six years ago in it, too.
Foughts about the game:
Feels less like the new GTA and more like another iteration of the True Crime series of games.
The main character is a right slow bitch, but I'm hoping he speeds up with time spent in-game.  They've tweaked the control layout.  This utterly killed Tomb Raider: Angel Of Darkness for me when it came out many moons ago and I'm still not sold on it just yet in GTA4 - but it's early days.
Online is fun as fuck - it's literally Button Man: the Game.  Ran some ten year-old kid over while he was busy shooting someone with a shotgun every time he tried to stand up, then reversed over him to finish him off and did a drive-by on the other guy for good measure.  Prepare to see this game in newspapers and news broadcasts alongside headlines like "SIMULATOR FOR SOCIOPATHS" because it is literally the funnest thing ever, and if there's one thing people hate more than teenagers kicking their dad to death on his front doorstep, it's teenagers having a good time in their own home and not hurting anyone.

To those whose 360 is dead right now, I have only this to offer:  HA HA YOUR 360 IS DEAD AND I'M PLAYING GTA4.

*sigh*
Won't be able to play until Thursday.  Postie tried to deliver it today but wanted a signature so they took it away because I wasn't in.
It's now sitting in a royal mail depot on the edge of an industrial estate which is a pain for me to get to as I don't have a car (it'll be shut now anyway).
Tried to get it re-delivered to my work address tomorrow but because it was posted as special delivery they won't change the delivery address for me.
Got nobody else to sign for me at home so I'm paying 50p to transfer it to my local post office which is approx five miles from the depot but it'll take 48hrs to cover the monumental distance!

Just been playing it a bit today - pretty good so far, although the frame rate can get choppy in places at 1080P, I'm going to try dropping it to 720P to see if it helps.

Pretty surreal to be mowing down pedestrians to Oxygene IV.

The Razor commercial on the TV made me laugh.

Got up early(was at the shops for 8am!) and everywhere was still closed and had big cues, but Zavvi had opened quietly at 8 and were selling it, no cues at all because no-one seemed to have cottoned on. Probably because Zavvi's gash.

It's been fun so far, the TV ad for the 24 spoof made me spit juice on my living room floor though.

For those who worry they don't have the time to fully invest in the game (damn you, employment!), I really can't reccommend the online modes enough.  Team up to rule the city or just go on a murder spree like you're some kind of mental Terminator with no regard for whatever damage you might incur by getting ran over by a jeep or riddled with a copper's bullets.
Awsome.  Just...

Whats that all about?

It will be quite ahwile before before I will be able to afford the console to play that game on. I would buy the PC version, though console is always better becuase their controllers more user freindly.

I don't think I will be getting the 360 ever. They sound real bad. After haering about the few 360 owners on this messagebaord have had to send them back to be repaired. Thats bad press.

I've had my PSTWO for awhile and it's never
broken down. Despite, all the travelling I did down south with it. Like I kept it in plastic box in the back of my Utility and there were many occasions when my vechile had broken down. You'd think that all the jiggling around and long hours in the humidity might have shortened it's life. I even tried selling at one stage when I thought I needed the money and the idea of owning seemed not vaiable at the time. At the seven hundred dollars I paid for it and the tow hundred dollars that every single pawn shop was going to offer me. No way. Glad I held onto it. Though now, I got it back home and it's still works.

Sony should pay me for saying that.

Anyway, it was just yesterday that I got my copy of 'Black And White Two' in the mail because I have been wanting this game for while yet I kept putting it off until it was no longer being sold retail. So I ordered it.

In short it's a God game RTS, sort of mlike Poplulous. Which is no surpirse as both those game were made by the same folk. With a twist, you get to raised a giant animorphic animal that will defend your kingdom.

The city biulding phase of this game has been improved. You can draw paths along the ground. The people living in your town let you know what needs to be built next and actualley choose what new buildings are needed while you decide where to build them.

Pity the thing that I was most looking forward  about this game was the level of detail. The grass swaying in the breeze. The textures on the little people and the fur growing allover your maturing animal.

My graphics card wont allow for this.

The game still works and it still looks okay though.

The city building phase I have imagined 'What if this was a Mega-City One building game'?

It took a few hours for it to 'click' for me, but once I took a nighttime drive through LC's version of Times Square I knew I was in for the long haul.

I've said words to the effect of "HOLY FUCKING SHIT" at least twice during the cutscenes.

Which did you guys choose? Playboy X or Dwayne? I went for X first but died so I went after Dwayne just because and I immediately regretted it.

I think that may have been the BEST fourteen Australian dollars I ever spent.

Though the game is extremy buggy in that I have so far had to retart the game after making it to stage three twice with too diffrent creatures.

First the Cow whiuch pretty smarty for upright walking animal.

Then the Wolf which who is toughter and must faster as running.

When my computer froze both times. It screwed up all my saved games for some strange reason.

I'm trying to install the official patch for it now.

Most interesting part of the game so far had been watching the Wolf-man attack a hoard of Viking archers and actualley seeing that his arms and upper torso were being nailed by some many arrows like a pin cusion before grinding all of them into the ground like paste.

I haven't brought eh expansion yet. Though I am thinking of it.

The new Fable Game looks good also. After ever so breifly playinng the first game when it was put on display inside a electronics store. Attacking two guards and accruing so many points of evil.

I might wait fo the PC version though. As I wont be ever buying a X-Box anytime soon.

Just for the record I let Cherise go, offed Dwayne over X, offed Francis over Derrick, executed Darko and went after revenge on Dmitiri. Kate died.

The last mission rocked my world.

Now I'm just waiting for the DLC. What's next? Bulgarin? Petrovic? The families?

Just finished the game, had kept away from this thread because of spoilers (but I know it was a mistake so won't shout at anyone!) and it was absolutely stunning. Took me well over 40 hours because I padded out the story stuff with all the side missions and stuff. I've only ever pulled 2 gaming all nighters in the past, but I sat up til past 5am on 4 occasions on this game. Sad I know, but I didn't have work in the morning and simply couldn't put it down. Since I made myself a Steam Account last monday or tuesday.

I have been enjoying the game ' Hinterland.' Which like a poor man's version Diablo Two ( without Dungeons and a character class tech tree.)  with a very innovative village building feature that adds a extra dimesion to game play.

If you can spare the thirty dollars (AUD) you should try purchacing this one.

I have to admit that after playing this for nearly a week, I still find the word 'Hinterland' to be a odd name to associate with it.

it was Wendesday of last week that I decided to purchase the GTA IV download from Steam.

After getting the download started. It had progresssed about fifty one percent of the way through when it stopped.

After refreshing the page, the download proceeded wih the download. No not really, because the numbers weren't moving.

it was still stuck at fifty one percent and nopt moving beyond this.

About half a hour later, the message 'Download Completed' popped up.

When I knew the actaul download would take a full eaight and and half hours and it was barely four hours into this.

So I,m now trying download it again. Since then, my machine and it's connection have been alittle slow.

It's really hard to get help through Steam, because they want you consult pages of FAQ and for some strange reason their Forum will not let me post despite having also having registered just for this reason alone.

I'm sending them a question and request for help right now.

GTA IV is still not a cheap download coming to between seventy and eighty dollars (AUD).

So, I eoither want thsi game to work, which it isn't or a refund.

As it is, it's stcuk at creating the local cah files, preparing for the full game install again.

it doesn't go beyond this.

it just stalls.

I have checked to see if I have the right amount of disk space, about 1800 KB atleast only 1500 is needed.

I sending them copy of my DXdiag, even though I reckon STEAM should this knowledge anyway. They actualley scan you system to see if you have the right hard ware.

The thing is, that whenever they request the game code, I use the confirmation code they gave me when I first purchased this game. It's the only code that was given to me. So I figured it would be the only code that mattered when I was prompted to use since I first tried to successfully download this game.

This doesn't work either. It just keeps giving me INVALID number/code error message.

I know this is the wrong place to ask, but I figured I would on the off chance that anybody else has experienced the same problem with another Steam game or the very same GTA IV on Steam.

If you are trying to get it for the PC get your money back right now. Pople I know who have bought this have been complaing aout many different problems (downloading it just being one of them!).
As I fancied this game myself I went to Amazon and had a look at the reviews; nearly every single review is negative.

I'd urge you to have a look at the Amazon reviews and then make a decision.

Well, I loved Gta: San Andreas and have been yearning to play this but have never bothered buying a Playstation Three.

Whne I saw it GAT IV on steam. I also assumed that one of it's features would be making easier to run on a not quite so up to date PC as mine.

Anyway, I am awaiting a reply and a solution from them, right now.

I guess I will find out soponer neough how ell GTA IV is going to run on my machine.

I have asked them to scan my hardware and given them my DXDiag details.

I haven't tried this on the PC myself, but my mate did and he said that since it's a Microsoft live game, it will only accept an X-Box compatible controller, or something like that. Which seems a bit ridiculous on the PC. Maybe if you're downloading it from Steam it won't have the XBox restrictions.

I'd just like to say I've finished the strip club / 3 managers mission (Undressed To Kill)

I've been trying to complete this mission since new year's day.

Some of you may be thinking "What's the big deal?"

I obviously had been approaching the mission from the wrong thought process as I've used up god knows how many attempts, ammunition, cups of coffee, vodkas... the list goes on. The bull in a chain shop approach just wasn't the answer.

Anyway. I decided to "think outside the box" (don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't got this far), and hey presto! Managers are deceased!  :D

There is no real point to this post, but I just thought I'd share it. There must be SOMEONE who got badly stuck on this one as well as me??

The PC version of GTA IV is notoriously broken, but seems - after a very slow start by Rockstar - to be getting patch-fixed.  You can get the patches here:  //http://www.rockstargames.com/support/IV/PC/patch/index.html

And the moral of the story is:  it's time to get a PS3 or 360.

I think got the patch which tells me why exactly it doesn't work on my machine rather than giving me a vague idea.

The thing about the motorcylces is that with playing San Adreas on my Playstation Two. I could ride the motorcylce up steep enbankment without falling off.

Once up a lamp post while sticking to my seat.

Once landing right on the scaffolding supports right at the top of a billborad.

Theres a flat board up there.

I landed there like it was part of the road,...

Then I just did the equivelent of 'dropping the cluthc a' leaving that billboard behind me.

That felt cool though, despite my feelings that I'll never do this in real life.

Well it's the first game to come out that I've worked on since I started at Rockstar, so I'm well chuffed. I'm going to mention "my name's in the credits" so much people will have to start calling me "Inthecredits Monkey". My only disappointment is it's DLC so I can't take the manual round to my mum's to show her.

Cor, good on yer mate. Nice job. As a man in the know (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) are there any plans to release an expansion pack for the PS3? I know Microsoft have the rights for the downloadable expansions but will PS3 users get anything? Totally understand if answering this is against policy, but you can tell me, can't you? I won't tell anyone. Honest.

Afraid I couldn't possibly comment, which is easy in this instance because I genuinely don't know! Nice try though...

Nothing that snazzy, I'm a QA tester. Not been there long either so didn't mean to give the impression I'm a big cheese there or anything! You're in games too are you not (think I remember you mentioning it in another thread at some point)?

Nah. I used to write them for fun a long long time ago before Uni (and during a bit but that was mostly playing with A.I routines).  Back when i graduated there wasn't much of a games industry though.  I had a chance to go to Code Masters but took the "sensible" route at the time and went to IBM (it wasa better career move back then).

I still code at times but haven't written games in years.  I keep an interest in what's going on but that's about it.

Sounds a good job mate, well done onthe first game.

Finally managed to download it last night, first impression was it reminded me of The Warriors, it's great fun having your own gang! Johnny is a cool guy. The new bike handling is superb.
V slight character based spoiler:
I don't like you Billy. You're going down sunshine.
I'm sure there were one or two other people involved, but well done Keef!

Yeah, I got it last night too and it's fantastic. As ever, the script and characterisation is top notch - I hate Billy already and can see him leading me and the rest of the gang to the memorial wall! I checked my emails in TW@ and it looks like some of the gang think the same, we could be headed for a heart wrenching, all mighty rumble.

Riding in formation to increase your health is inspired, it really makes you feel part of the gang. As does calling for back up on your mobile when things get tough!

I'm early on in the game but I've just listened to
Jonny's Eulogy from Billy
, a brilliant way to cross over with Nico's story. Excellent stuff, wonderfully immersive.

I'm off to shoot some corrupt cops!

Just started playing this and I'm finding the drving really difficult in comparison to previous GTA games. To the point that I'm almost not enjoying the game because of it.

The controls are a lot more responsive when driving then in previous games, I found.
I got past it by easing off on the buttons when hooning it round corners. It seemed to work for me anyway.

- Unless you're in a 'Sabre' of course. That car is the exception and just will not drive in a straight line!

Hope this helps. It really will be worth your while persevering!

Which reminds me, I still haven't finished this game. (I got distracted collecting Lamborghinis and then Batman Arkham Asylum came along...)

I gave up playing this ages ago, but found myself playing San Andreas during the week yet again.  "You're on... the Dust."  Yes.  I certainly am.
I found GTA4 too much like its imitators - lifting the GPS from Scarface helps that impression along - and the thing about the GTA imitators was that I didn't like them that much because they weren't as much fun.  GTA4 feels like someone ironed out most of the bugs from The Getaway: Black Monday and it's certainly impressive - it just takes itself too seriously for my liking, radio chatter and Halo-bashing cartoon shows or not.
Online deathmatch is a blast, though.

I messing around with Liberty City and San Andreas on the PSTwo about a fortnight ago and remarked how easy it is to ding your car.

Mind you, it's also very easy to speed and try bypass the slower moving traffic, and I guess some ways it's most realistic that way. Otherwise it feels dead slow.

Concerning GTAIV. I purchased the download of this through Steam last December and my computer was not up to specs.

Not sure If I still have the download as I had given my machine agood clean. Removing all unnesssary files and think I might given that one the heave ho.

Pity, as it might have worked beutifully on the other machine my father riletting me use right now.

Not sure if can share a Steam account on two machines though.

You can have a copy of any game and that account on as many machines as you please, you just can't be logged in to steam on more than one machine at any one time.

E: to clarify; If you're logged into steam on Machine A and then fire up steam on Machine B and login to the same account, Machine A will disconnect from steam.
