Creative Common / How do I make my own Batman mask.
16 January, 2015, 12:22:57 PM
I just wondered how people make their own replica or custom superhero masks - e.g. Batman? Some kind of sculpting process? Also how do people make their own Dredd helmet replicas?

I haven't been on the forum in ages.
Just wondering where we were at with getting a Dredd sequel?

Film & TV / What comedy film should I watch?
06 March, 2013, 05:32:48 PM
Gonna have tea in half an hour, just got netflix, had a cruddy day so fancy watching a good comedy film to cheer me up. But, I watch quite alot of films and have a large DVD collection, so don't want to see something obvious or rewatch something I know off by heart e.g. anchorman, ghostbusters, 40 yr old virgin etc

Can anyone recommend any leftfield choices??? If all else fails I'm just gonna watch some episodes of the Office (US) lol

Film & TV / Jason Mamoa's Conan underated?
10 February, 2013, 02:24:06 PM
Been playing on Skyrim obsessively recently and so been watching a few films that remind me of the Skyrim universe. Watched Immortals the other day - yesterday I watched the 2011 version of Conan the Barabarian.

Does anyone else think the latter is underated? I didn't hear people make a big fuss of it when it came out - and sure Momoa isn't the greatest actor on earth but he still played the part well imo and the film was good.
I also understand it that they are making another Conan film, but with Arnie returning to the role instead of Momoa.

Any one have any opinions?

I expected more feedback than this haha since its such a common and bloody annoying thing to occur.

I got mine from currys, just a 22inch mind for my bedroom. I play Skyrim on it mostly and watch westerns. Like you say, when theres a dark and moody scene in the film/game, or an expansive landscape shot the 'backlight bleed' does show up.  Like I said, at the moment I have some clouding from the sides, and sort of 'folds' (2) in the screen. I'm trying to find my receipt to see if I took cover out on it so I can replace it before it gets any worse. Though even getting it replaced can be a lottery as I've bought brand new LED/LCD TVs before now and they've had very uneven 'backlight coverage' - the backlight should be consistant damn it! LCD TVs with DVD combined, and side lit LCD tvs are notorious for it.

I think it's all a scam of planned obsolescence!

Film & TV / Re: Westerns!
09 February, 2013, 08:08:18 PM
Watched a few westerns over the last two days - some of them starring a great actor called Richard Boone.
I'm sure you guys will know that feeling you had when you first saw a Clint Eastwood film as a teen, and then later on you first saw a Henry Fonda film etc i.e. underated actors from the annals of Western filmic history. Well Richard Boone is my discovery of the last 2 days. Watched a film called A Thunder of Drums yesterday, and Rio Conchos today - he's one of those actors like Sean Connery, Tommy Lee Jones, Clint Eastwood etc who make the film so much better just by being in it.

I can see why people may not like the film. Sounds much like my relationship with The Dark Knight Rises lol

wow really? I respect your opinion - but for me No Country for Old Men is brilliant - I mean for that and True Grit the coens basically did straight forward adaptations - I mean, for No Country for Old Men all you see on film is basically all there in the book. I love Cormac McCarthys stuff!  Other aspects I liked A) its basically a western B) theres an element of moral ambiguity and impending menacing characters which I seem to like in films C) it has tommy lee jones, one of the most underated actors ever imo.

I think I'm gonna read Lonesome Dove next as it jumped off the shelf at me at Waterstones.

Off Topic / Does anyone else suffer with Backlight Bleed?
07 February, 2013, 08:57:34 PM
You would be forgiven in thinking this was a virulent illness from the 1800s - However Backlight Bleed/ing is in fact common (so I've learnt) in LCD and LED TVs.

I have only recently learnt the terminology for this phenomena as my TV seems to be showing signs of it.If you googleimage some examples of Backlight Bleed you will see what I mean rather than me trying to articulate it.
Compared to cases I have seen in forums and online, my case of backlight bleed is not so bad, though I swear it is getting worse bit by bit. Most people are often not bothered about the effects of a bleeding backlight (again see google images) - however I am quite an obsessive compulsive person and if I notice something it niggles at me.
I have Samsung LED LCD TV and it was fine when I bought it - though many TVs I have had and taken back to the shop have had this problem; of uneven backlight coverage. At this point in time my backlight bleeding is starting to annoy me - 2 'folds' have appeared in the screen and there is slight cloudiness at the edges.
I've been sat alot recently with a broken rib, watching westerns and playing Skyrim to pass the time so it has been more annoying I guess.

So, does anyone have this problem?

Thanks for the tips guys.
I can't get me enough of westerns recently. Even rereading No Country for Old Men lol
It's great cause there are so many westerns out there - and if you have the channels film4, TCM or MGM and Sky Classics there are always Westerns on. My Planner on Sky+ is choc full of them at the mo.

Like I said, I love say 90percent of the westerns I watch, but there are certainly quite a few stinkers in the history of making westerns. These mainly come in the 50s where there are alot of cheaply made black and white westerns, and some of them are actually quite fine, like the ones starring good actors like Robert Mitchum or Joel McCrea - but there are many that are like bad television movie westerns. Then there are a few very poor 70s westerns and 70s spaghetti westerns. For instance; I watched one of the westerns that was supposed to have gone some way to influencing Tarantino in his making of Django Unchained, called My Name is Mallory/aka Mallory Means Death or something. This had a decent soundtrack but the film was terrible lol The film looked extremely cheaply made, the acting was terrible, and it was meant to be set in Texas - though it was clearly filmed in a mediterranean tuscan landscape with very tanned italian actors lol

Film Discussion / Re: Dredd (2012)
27 January, 2013, 02:36:46 PM
Logically without reading too much on here or on t'internet I would have assumed that they were selling alot of props and such from the film in order to compensate for lower takings in sales of tickets and DVDs. Therefore adding to the pot for a potential sequel.
I'm more likely to believe the above than the theory that they are selling everything off because the film was a 'failure'.

I believe Dredd has perfectly set the tone for a sequel to be made. It had potential for a better film, you wanted to learn more about the expanded universe, the designs for the judges outfits weapons and mega city FX were spot on.

I'd say the closest comparison I would make if I was in charge of selling a sequel would be with the mad Max franchise - a massively popular cult franchise with a sequel in the can - the first film made on a shoe string budget and the sequels not direct sequels - with aspects reimagined - but sequels none the less. I'd say a sequel to Dredd would be a reimagining in a way in the fact it would hopefully have a bigger budget. Aspects of the cityscape would be further explored in CGI and we could be shown an expanded Law centre of Mega City 1 and Hall of Justice. The lawmaster would be reimagined to fit the comics more - this would perfectly fit The Cursed Earth arc as they were given new bikes that the judge department had just made fresh off of the production line so they could be more successful in their mercy mission across the Cursed Earth. Some have said the Judge outfits were too bulky - I have to say I thought for a filmic treatment they were perfect - I would make the eagle more pronounced though, maybe more gold.

Basically - there may not be a sequel. But there should be! If I win the lottery I'm investing a million or so haha

Film & TV / Re: Utopia - C4
27 January, 2013, 02:00:28 PM
I love this new series. I like the premise and I like the characters. I'm not such a fan of the bad guy/s and I hope that aspect evolves. There is a element to it that seems predictable
Jessica Hyde is the same person as Becky
though I'm probably reading too much in there. I quite like the casting, especially that of Wilson Wilson. There are certain aspects of the scripts I would have tweaked and amended and the direction seems abit 'pretentious' at times, but overall I like it.

Film & TV / Westerns!
27 January, 2013, 01:09:52 PM
So recently in the past few weeks I have become obsessed with Westerns. I have had the epiphany that most of the films I like have this 'Western sensibility' in their structures and narratives. For instance; Judge Dredd can be aligned with the archetypal Law-man who is the moral-backbone of the world even when morality and society crumbles around him. Anyway, I watch a Western every two days practically; old westerns, classic westerns, revisionist westerns, spaghetti westerns etc And I have loved 90% of them. I also have loved playing on the Red Dead Redemption Xbox 360 game.

So are there any westerns you guys love?/ Can recommend?/ Have opinions on? etc

Film Discussion / Re: Dredd (2012)
20 January, 2013, 02:35:47 PM
Haven't been on this forum for a number of weeks. Watched the Dredd film yesterday after searching for it all over (the HMV and shops in York didn't stock the DVD, and I had to walk miles out to a Sainsburys to buy the Dredd DVD).

I know most people will have said their opinions on the film and that I'm coming late to the table. But I just wanted to state my opinions and query a few things about the film.

- Dredd felt to be like a great film but with the potential to spawn much much better sequels with much bigger budgets.
- Did Dredd have a relatively small budget???
- I loved Karl Urban as Dredd! I hope that a better sequel script will give Urban chance to say more snarled and defiant Eastwood-esque lines as Dredd.
- I wasn't crazy about the direction of the film. But the sets were excellent. The designs for thelawgiver, the judges outfits etcetera were perfect. I also respected that they may have had a lower budget than most blockbuster film productions and so kept it confined to the one mega block.
- I also have to say I still wouldn't have cast Olivia Thirlby as Anderson though she did an adequate job. (I would have cast Amber Heard).
- Basically; for a sequel I would like a new scriptwriter and director. I would also like Dredd roaming a more expanded mega city with additional 'big' actors as other characters or villains. I would take a leaf out of the book of Star Trek/Star Trek; Into Darkness by adding western elements to Dredd sequels. Dredd is the archetypal western lawman and upholder of morals and justice. If the budget for the sequel can't reach to the expansive CGI of the Mega City then why not set the sequel in the Cursed Earth (again reaching into western sensibilities). But at the end of the day Dredd is a film like Mad Max crying out for an exploratory sequel.

PS is it just me or did the quality of the DVD leave something to be desired compared to the excellent quality of my Dredd cinema experience.
