Apologies if this tastes a bit spammy, but I thought there was the possibility people might be interested in seeing some of the artwork for a Dredger story I found in the 1980 Action Annual, with some rather lovely colour art by a certain artist north of the border, down Glasgae way...

Anyway, I'll post up the first page here, and if anyone's interested I'll stick some more up, otherwise just let the topic drift down the thread and die like some kind of electronic messageboard salmon.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/BVirgo01/Action1980_Dredger1.jpg">

Pffft...

See, I said that if they brought in the smoking ban, we'd all end up brutally murdered in the inhospitable outdoors by inscrutable Oriental assassins whilst we were sucking away at the nocotine-laden goodness of our favourite tab!

...and now they finally did it... those maniacs!  They banned it up! Ah, damn you! Damn you all to hell...!http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/BVirgo01/Action1980_Dredger2.jpg">

It's hard to tell at these sizes (and I'm not looking to start a fight) but I'm dubious about the attribution to Kennedy.

I can see how some of the ink style might certainly lead you to think that, but the layout and composition lack the draughtsmanship and dynamism that characterises even Cam's early work.

At a guess from these, I'd point a finger at Geoff Campion, who was a regular IPC artist during the 70s and early 80s, but I'd need to see a bigger version of the pages, at which point I may well have to eat my words!

Cheers

The name DREDGER rings a bell.

I might have alook through some old British annuals...

Certain bits of the inking also made me think of Ian Kennedy (?) the chap that did a million COMMANDO covers but it's not him either.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!

BTW, Byron, I genuinely would be interested to see posts and/or links to bigger or higher rez versions of these pages, and the others if it's not too much work ...

Cheers!

I could believe that it's Cam before his own style developed or if he was imitating a set style. Here a picture comparing a head shot from that page aside one of Gil Hazzard : Scorpio he did around the same time for 1980's Eagle. Similar? Not conclusive but maybe.

On second thoughts he looks more like Blackie Gray out of Roy of the Rovers.

He is doing the generic boys action story style.

I reckon its Cam.

Some great colour reproduction.

( Then you get gibbon's Watchmen and Bolland,s early Killing Joke which are appalling.)

Work did go into the annuals though.

Interesting that. The artworks not bad at all (whoever did it) and i'm suprised its as good as late as 1980.
Action itself went down the tubes pretty quickly art-wise, with Dredger suffering the worst.
Here he is just 2 and a bit months along the line:

Heya... It's Studio work done to look like the Great Geoff Campion.
Campion did a lot of art for Action, and most of thelater Dredgers.

This Annual story isn't his work, but is attempting to be.
