Title: The Galaxy’s Greatest Top 20 Series - Tournament
Post by: broodblik on 10 July, 2020, 07:58:42 PM
The voting booth is open you can cast your vote for your favourite thrills publish in the Galaxy's Greatest comic (ever !!!!).

How does it work?

1. You select your top 20 series which appeared the prog since the legendary first issue published 26 February 1977 up until now (currently that will be prog 2190).

2. The only series not included is Judge Dredd. You can cast your vote for any Dredd-verse series, but our favourite lawman has an unfair advantage.

3. The shorts are all clubbed together so you do not vote for a single Future Shock or Terror Tale but for the whole shebang. The shorts published are: Future Shocks, Past Imperfect, Pulp Sci-Fi, Tales from Beyond Science, Tales of Telguuth, Terror Tales, Tharg's Thrillers, Tharg's Dragon Tales, Time Twisters, Twisted Tales, Vector 13, What If ?.

4. The following series although carrying the same title will be split. For example, Strontium Dog will have all stories featuring Johnny Alpha be clubbed under Strontium Dog (Alpha) and the rest will be clubbed under Strontium Dog (Feral).  Here is the list:
a.   Harlem Heroes (Original) and Harlem Heroes (The Fleisher Years)
b.   Robo-Hunter (Sam) and Robo-Hunter (Samantha)
c.   Rogue Trooper (Friday) and Rogue Trooper (Rogue)
d.   Strontium Dog (Alpha) and Strontium Dog (Feral)

5. We again work with a point system much like the system employed for the "The Rebellion Years Top 10 Series" tournament (except now you have 20 votes).
1 = 25 points
2 = 22 points
3 = 19 points
4 = 17 points
5 = 16 points
6 = 15 points
7 = 14 points
8 = 13 points
9 = 12 points
10 = 11 points
11 = 10 points
12 = 9 points
13 = 8 points
14 = 7 points
15 = 6 points
16 = 5 points
17 = 4 points
18 = 3 points
19 = 2 points
20 = 1 point

6. You can vote as many times as you want but only the last vote counts.
7. I will publish a list of stories below but if I mist a series you can still vote for it the only rule here is that it must have been published in any prog.

How long will the tourney last?

You can cast your vote up until Sunday 2nd of August.

May the best series win

This is going to be fascinating! Many thanks for running it. Now, I just have to get my thinking cap on... Lots of agonising over the top votes will no doubt follow!

This is quite difficult because how do you fit 25 into 20 ? Because I have so far 25 candidates.

Brilliant! Thanks for this. And I have my twenty- however, getting them in the correct order is proving to be a headache. Space Girls or Counterfeit Girl for number one? I mean, it's an impossible choice.

Should Downlode Tales be considered part of Sinister Dexter rather than a separate thing?
Similarly isn't The Dead Man effectively a Dredd strip but with a different banner stuck on it?

Although I suspect these semantics aren't really going to have a major impact on the vote.
Title: Re: The Galaxy’s Greatest Top 20 Series - Tournament

I grouped the following three together Night Zero,Beyond Zero and Below Zero because in reality it is the same series featuring the same main character. Downlode Tales is before my return so I am not familiar with the series, you can just as well then vote for Sinister Dexter.

It is not always easy on how to decide which must clubbed together and whom are worthy enough to get their own series. The split of Strontium Dog and Rogue Trooper was no brainer for me. It is complete different characters carrying the same title.

Yep fair. I suspect that's what most would do anyway so I don't think this is actually going to have any real impact on the vote.

The funny thing is, I'd rate The Dead Man over virtually any Dredd strip - it's in my top 3 2000AD stories.

Some potential considerations that don't turn up in the first list there. Each of these has at least two parts, with some being more extensive.

- The Amazing Maze Dumoir
- Bob Byrne's Twisted Tales
- Danzig's Inferno
- Doctor Dibworthy
- Droid Life
- Encounter [progs 54-57; text stories with single splash]
- The Great Detective Caper
- Infinity Inc.
- Mean Arena [as opposed to The Mean Arena: they're separate strips]
- Psi-Testers
- Supercover Saga [progs 19-43; text story of cover splash]
- Tharg's Alien Invasions
- Venus Bluegenes
- Work Experience

That was difficult and (as ever) my answers might be different on another day. I've qualified some of the placements, just because it made me feel better.

01   Nemesis the Warlock
02   The Ballad of Halo Jones
03   Zenith
04   Slaine: up to and including The Horned God
05   The A.B.C. Warriors: up to and including Khronicles of Khaos
06   Kingdom
07   Nikolai Dante
08   The Fall of Deadworld
09   D.R. & Quinch
10   Strontium Dog [Alpha]: Death's Head to Rage
11   Firekind
12   Button Man
13   Scarlet Traces
14   Leviathan
15   Ro-Busters: Death On The Orient Express & The Terra-Meks
16   Indigo Prime: Winwood And Cord - Killing Time
17   Devlin Waugh: Chasing Herod / Reign of Frogs / Sirius Rising
18   Survival Geeks
19   Chopper: Song of the Surfer
20   Fiends of the Eastern Front

See, this would have been relatively easy if it was a top thirty:

21   Caballistics Inc.
22   Rogue Trooper [Rogue]: pre-Horst & Cinnabar
23   Shakara
24   Bad Company [first series only]
25   Ace Trucking Co. [up to and including Too Many Bams]
26   Meltdown Man
27   The VCs [original series]
28   Return To Armageddon
29   Brass Sun
30   Banzai Battalion

You have Rogue Trooper twice so I have allocated it as follows:

4 = Rogue Trooper as Rogue Trooper (Rogue)
19 = Rogue Trooper as Rogue Trooper (Friday)

I also allocated Strontium Dog against Strontium Dog (Alpha)

It's probably fairly safe to assume people mean the Johnny Alpha one when they say "Strontium Dog". In fact, the mostly Feral-starring sequence was actually Strontium Dogs, plural.

(Except for the story Dead Man's Hand in the 1993 Yearbook, which was super-titled as Strontium Dog but actually a Feral tale.)

I can remember something of the same line I just do not have the physical copies anymore. I just split the two so that it makes it easier to identify. I do not think that many will vote anyway for the Feral (Strontium Dogs) series.

A couple of clarification questions.

When you say Strontium Dog (Feral), do you really mean Strontium Dogs? And, as I recall, it featured other Strontium Dogs as well as Feral, as the lead in particular episodes.

What is the Starlord strip you are referring to? If it is what I think it is, only one episode every appeared.

BTW I consider Downlode Tales to be Sinister Dexter - it's just a different label that was put on it when the boys temporarily split up, to give the impression it was permanent.

On your first question around Strontium Dog (Feral) you are correct it is Strontium Dogs (with an s at the end).

The Starlord strip was published in one of the xmas specials prog 2061

Yes if you feel Downlode Tales is part of Sinister Dexter rather vote for Sinister Dexter

After the first weekend we have a nice fight on top with 6 thrills that are separated by a single top vote.  At this stage to total number of thrills getting votes are 73. This shows me how diverse voting has been so far and how interesting the fight for the top spots will be.

As always remember you can vote as many as you want only your last vote counts.

Ok here goes:

1: Strontium Dog (Alpha).
2: Slaine
3: Nemesis The Warlock
4: ABC Warriors
5: Zenith
6: Brink
7: The Stainless Steel Rat
8: Robo-Hunter (Sam)

10: DR & Quinch

12: The VCs
13: Anderson PSI Division
14: Nikolai Dante
15: Grey Area
16: Halo Jones
17: Kingdom
18: Kingmaker
19: Jaegir
20: Savage

Comments.

Strontium Dog is the only strip, along with Dredd, to have maintained incredible levels of quality through out the history of the comic.

The top 5, plus Dredd are intrinsic to my childhood. For Slaine, Nemesis and ABC Warriors, I am ignoring a drop off in quality in later strips. The early strips are 2000AD as far as I am concerned, hence my vote for Pat in the non Wagner Tourney.

It seems a shame put Brink only 6th, but it's going up against strips of such excitement that I can't justify putting it higher.

I had largely forgotten about the Stainless Steel Rat, but I am currently re-reading it and it's fantastic.

I'm putting the VCs in for GFD's original series, not Dan Abnett's continuation.

Jaegir is that rare thing - a spin off that is better than the original.

I have 4 stories each for Wagner and / or Grant, Uncle Pat and Dan Abnett. Which is reflective of who has done the best stories in the Prog. Add in Dredd and Wagner Grant take the win.

So tricky ... here goes ...

1. Nemesis
2. Strontium Dog (Alpha)
3. Nikolai Dante
4. Bad Company
5. Zenith
6. ABC Warriors
7. Shakara
8. Indigo Prime
9. Flesh
10. Halo Jones
11. Rogue Trooper (Rogue)
12. Revere
13. Slaine
14. Tyranny Rex
15. DR & Quinch
16. Devlin Waugh
17. Savage
18. Firekind
19. Chopper
20. Robo-Hunter

I've tried to write this on the basis of 'what immediately comes to my mind when I think of great 2000ad stories', but am pretty sure that means I'll realise I've forgotten something I thought was absolutely classic.

9) Sinister Dexter
10) Sam Slade, Robohunter (not Samantha)
11) The VCs (all of it; if anything the Abnett reboot pushed this higher)
12) Defoe
13) Helium
14) Shako!
15) DR & Quinch
16) Brass Sun
17) Cradlegrave
18) Anderson, Psi Division
19) Leviathan
20) Slaine

Comments: I did end up thinking about it quite a bit, working out overall scores for story and art, that kind of thing. I tried to be honest with myself about the entirety of a series (allowing myself one exception, to ignore all post-Wagner/Grant Robohunter). So a series like Slaine gets some crazy high highs and some fairly low lows, and some series with standout stories fall down from ropey beginnings (Indigo Prime, Low Life). But overall, this is how much I've loved each series combined with a hint of how excited I am to see it in the Prog again.

Yes good point. My vote for Robo-Hunter is only for the Wagner Grant era. My mind had completely blanked out what followed when I was doing it. They should almost be listed separately 😉.

My list:

1. Nikolai Dante
2. Rogue Trooper (Rogue)
3. Slaine
4. Strontium Dog (Alpha)
5. Jaegir
6. Brink
7. Brass Sun
8. Shakara
9. Nemesis the Warlock
10. Halo Jones
11. Bad Company
12. Zenith
13. Mazeworld
14. Kingmaker
15. Kingdom
16. The Red Seas
17. Journal of Luke Kirby
18. The Order
19. Aquila
20. Scarlett Traces

The most difficult part was to decide if Slaine or Strontium Dog will occupy the third spot. At the end I took a strength versus weakness approach. It was basically The Horned God and Sky Chariots versus the death and resurrection of Johnny Alpha that swayed by vote.

I am a big fan of military sci-fi, so it was easy to choose Rogue as my second option. I can see that Jaegir will eventually overtake Rogue because of the strength (and not quantity) of Rennie/Colbey team.

If I have to choose my top 20 next year I am sure it will look complete different not any easy task selecting 20 series out of 43 years of history.

Well I was about to paste this in and then looked, decided to tweak it again BUT had to spot myself otherwise I'd never get round to it... then pasted it here and did a different tweak anyway! DAMNIT ask me this in 24 hours time and who knows who much this will change!

1   Nikolai Dante
2     Nemesis the Warlock
3   Brink
4   Zenith
5   Kingdom
6   Anderson
7   Cradlegrave
8   Firekind
9   Halo Jones
10   Skizz
11   Sinister Dexter
12   Flesh
13   Brass Sun
14   Bad Company
15   Button Man
16   The Red Seas
17   Zombo
18   Shakara
19   Indigo Prime
20   Strontium Dog (Alpha)

What fascinates me is how much consistancy (or lack there of in a number of cases) of quality has played in my decisions. Prime example is I'm amazed that I place Johnny A at 20, but I do run hot and cold with this strip. At its best it up there, top 5 stuff. But there are other stories, that while aways entertaining I don't rate anywhere near as highly. Opinion huh funny old thing.

Title: Re: The Galaxy’s Greatest Top 20 Series - Tournament

After the second weekend we have 89 thrills getting  :thumbsup:.

The top 2 positions looks like it will go down to the wire. The third spot has a lot of breathing space. The top 10 looks settled but the next ten spots we have a lot off movers and shakers.

Now just for interest:
1. If I have a scenario where for example two votes were cast for the same thrill the highest position will count and the lowest position will become null and void.
2. As you already know we have a few thrills sharing names. In this case if the voter has cast his votes twice the highest points will be allocated against the thrill that appeared in the earliest prog. For example voting twice for Rogue Trooper the highest points will be allocated for Rogue and the lowest points for Friday.

I will notify the voter of both these scenarios :)

The last thing always remember you can vote as many times as you want only your last vote counts.

Can I just check when we are talking thrills that bridge both Prog and Meg we're talking just the Prog content aren't we...

So we're not talking Swimming in Blood for Devlin Waugh for example...

Correct nothing in the meg counts only works published in the prog so Swimming in Blood does not count

Day 1 - No 11 - 20

Day 3 - Gold, Silver and Bronze

Voting ends on Sunday 2nd of August midnight but I reality when I get up Monday morning I will then gather the last votes.

Less than one week left to influence the top 20.  As it stand 92 thrills received votes.

The top 2 is now almost done and dusted but a meager few points are currently between them.  The rest of the top 10 you do not see any real movement but the rest of the top 20 is where the real action is happening.

So keep on voting :)

I've quite pleased this is ending. Only yesterday I reviewed my vote thinking

'This will end soon and I've still not got Delvin Waugh' in there. Sirius Rising is one of my favs but I didn't vote for him at first as I thought the best stuff was in the Meg and now I'm twitching. It'll be good when the temptation is over!

Richard your numbering is incorrect, you have #15 twice down and you have basically voted for 21 thrills. I have discarded entry #20 Return to Armageddon:

Your list:
15. DR & Quinch
16. Brink
15. Slaughterbowl
17. Lobster Random
18. Zombo
19. Memento
20. Return to Armageddon

Updated your list to:
15. DR & Quinch
16. Brink
17. Slaughterbow
18. Lobster Random
19. Zombo
20. Memento

21. Return to Armageddon
