Megazine / MEG 286 - Psycho Killer
20 June, 2009, 10:13:05 AM
Very nice Colin Wilson cover - another classic.

Clive Barker interview - I'll be interested to read this although I've liked a lot of his stuff, I think he's never been better than 'Weaveworld' and Abarat was a bit below par despite brilliant illustrations throughout. There's no arguing with his horror/fantasy genius though.

John Cooper interview looks good too - I'm hoping for some pearls of wisdom from him - he's a bit of a legend from the early days of 2000 AD, so it should be pretty cool.

Having only flipped through only one other thing caught my eye - a lovely DPS by Nick Dyer - top notch!

Have you ever had Pie Minister Pies? My last one was over a month ago (whilst in Bristol) and I want one right now...

I want to look at some of my Titan Collections but they're in storage.

I want an A3 scanner to cut down on scanning time and stitching it all together in photoshop - despite how I've tried the damn pieces never quite line up 100%!

I want pies, reprints and a scanner, what do you want?

Help! / PROG 5 - a question.
18 May, 2009, 11:07:29 AM
Hi,
Just received a copy of prog 5 in the post, GREAT! Although... it appears to be missing a page between the end of Dan Dare and the beginning of M.A.C.H.1.
If anyone has a copy to hand and can tell me what the missing page is - I'd really appreciate it!
Muchas Gracias.

Hello all.

I'm one prog shy of a full run, I just need a complete copy of Prog 8.

I seriously doubt anyone has one they're willing to part with, but I thought I'd ask.
I'll pay around £10 (inc P&P) for it...

Hi, does anyone know where this piece originally came from? Was it ever printed larger than it appears on the subscription page in the 1200's and here on the website?
For ref. I mean this one:

Does it ever appear in all its glory, as full, un-cropped image?

Classifieds / Some tasty 2000AD morsels up for grabs!
26 February, 2009, 03:24:54 PM
Being self employed means money's getting terribly tight and I'm trying to free up some cash with some duplicate progs I have...

  • Progs: 71 - 77 (includes three of the banned issues) £40 for the run or £10 each for the banned ones? As you'd expect they're a bit yellowed and some may have newsagents' writing on them but they're complete as far as I can recall - some have scuffs, small tears and stuff but not unusual for the age.
  • Progs: 224 - 228 'Death Lives' (includes first Rogue too) £15 for the run? All reasonably nice condition. They, again, might be a bit yellowed for the more particular collector and I can't remember whether the duplicates have newsagents' writing on them.
  • Prog 1208 I won this one whilst trying to fill gaps I had in the early 1200's - I sold one earlier in the year for £16.50 and would happily sell this one for the same price. Great condition this one, no major defects...

I can take photos if anyone is seriously interested... just putting a toe in the water so to speak!

I'll post them for FREE to regular boarders - bagged, all nicely packed and with recorded delivery too! (special delivery at an extra £2.50 if requested)

Feel free to make offers... or if you'd prefer to do a deal with a trade element, I can PM you with my wants list. Paypal is my preferred method of payment, although, I'm close to M25 Jnc. 11 and you can pick them up and take £2.50 off the asking prices. Please let me know if I'm way off base on these prices as I thought they were fair and I've got no desire to rip anyone off.

Suggestions / Bring back the Sci-Fi Special please.
24 February, 2009, 01:06:36 PM
Nearly 13 years since the last Sci-Fi special - would anyone else like to see the summer special return? I'm not sure what the budgets and stuff are for on-offs, I'd just like to see the Sci-Fi special make a comeback!

The Sci-Fi special used to be a really nice place for:
- old thrills to be revisited in a test-the-water kind of way.
- one off stories that didn't necessarily fit with the narrative of their respective characters at the time.
- sneaky reminder reprints and new set-up stories that prepared you for upcoming events.
- catch-up editorial for new and lapsed readers.
- guest spots for illustrators that the weekly prog couldn't always afford.

It also represented a pretty good opportunity to recruit new readers.

I'm not unhappy with the prog, meg and yearly special - far from it... I'm just suggesting that another dose of thrill-power each year wouldn't go amiss - or am I recklessly hoping my circuits can sustain it? - what do you think?

It probably kicks up problems from a subscription point of view though, so I won't hold my breath!

General / Who was Sally Quasa?
15 February, 2009, 08:21:21 PM
We all want to see the Halo Jones storyline where we discover who Sally Quasa is... right?

...and we all know we never will...

Well, that is, unless Alan Moore has a 'Sting' style change of heart and decides to work once more with Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland, err, I mean Ian Gibson and Steve Potter/Richard Starkings.

The question remains though, who was Sally Quasa?
Suzi Quattro's band mate?
A Big Mumma of galactic proportions - like Quinch's Mother?
A love interest?
The black hole witch of the horse-head nebula?

I reckon this could stand some healthy discussion, nerdy speculation or downright vigourous debate!

Really though it's just 'cos I want to read more Halo Jones. Come on Alan, we love Halo - write the final chapter, put us out of our misery. Please?

Suggestions / Sinister Dexter go Dickensian?
08 February, 2009, 08:12:14 PM
You'll probably all think these are rubbish but they amused the imbecile that lives where my brain should be.

I really love some of the puns and names Dan Abnett comes up with for Sinister Dexter and I've been reading Dickens recently...

A  weird coalescing thing happened and these names hit me:

Davey Copafeel - a notorious snitch and sex-pest
Marvin Nuzzletit - a pimp
Miss Havashave - a scary bearded spinster
The Hateful Codger - a crime-boss

Anyone else feel like adding to this stupid list of names... or even coming up with a plot to go with them?

Books & Comics / CGC - what's the point exactly?
06 February, 2009, 01:31:55 PM
Over the last couple of years I've noticed this weird tendency towards this 9.8, 8.5 (whatever) CGC standard of classification... So, M, NM, FN, VG etc. isn't good enough, people don't trust those gradings anymore?

I understand if you're collecting as an investment, or you're archiving your old comics, but beyond that, it just seems like an industry endorsed scheme to artificially increase the value of a comic. In a way, removing the joy of comics as you now have something you can't afford to read.

I may be wrong, but why pay £50 for a comic that you can buy in the same condition for £8 without a stupid big hermetically sealed plastic case getting in the way?

Do people not want to read their comics? Is owning them all that's important?

Am I spouting off to the enlightened?

Books & Comics / Silver-acre comics - rude and unhelpful
05 February, 2009, 11:31:33 AM
So, I find a single issue I'm looking for on the Silver-Acre website. One issue, £2.50 - great. p&p £2.95 - not so great but I figure, what the hell - It'll plug that gap and I can continue reading. Oh, £10 minimum before postage... I'll give them a call I thought - they have an ebay store, maybe we can work something out - they'll probably be glad of the business...

NO. They weren't.

The guy I spoke to was obnoxious - "not worth my time mate" and he spoke over me in a loud and aggressive manner all the time I was trying to make enquiries into ways we might do business... I managed to get a couple of more words out before he HUNG UP on me!

I could not believe how rude that was. He had no interest in future business, and all I can do is whine about it here, 'cos I am not phoning a company back that is obviously that rude and ignorant of customer service. I will never be offering my business to them again.

I can see the problem from a money making point of view, one issue, no real point for them as they probably make 25p after all their expenses etc... It's just the concept of customer service that has gone astray - politeness would have cost nothing.

Negative publicity, then I hope, will encourage those of you tempted to engage their services, look for an alternative.

General / 2000AD collecting nostalgia
28 January, 2009, 05:19:01 PM
Ebay - really is an irritating place to buy comics. Unfortunately it does seem to be the only real place left you can buy 2000AD.

I really miss the days of the Westminster Comic Marts... The halcyon days when most main towns had a little comic shop down a dodgy back street. You'd push a rotten door off it's hinges and a fat bloke who looked like he usually slept in a doorway sat reading an issue of Spider-man drawn by Todd McFarlane. You'd ask where the 2000Ad were and without looking up he'd point one of his five pork bowyers at the bottom shelf where they had cardboard boxes packed with smelly old back issues. You'd carefully rifle through and become irritated that some were out of order, this would lead to a kind of paranoia where you ended up checking every issue they had on the off chance that one from your tattered list would be in there. Once in a while you were rewarded and a pristeen copy of that most elusive of issues was there and to boot, it was only £1.50!

Other Reviews / RE:ACTION vs. LEGENDARY - opinions...
22 January, 2009, 10:51:09 PM
Browsing ebay threw up auctions for the two Dredd figurines out there...

Re:action version and the newer Legendary one. Does anyone own one or both of these? I wondered what people thought of them from a comparison point of view. I remember being impressed with the detail on the old Re:action ones - the Johnny Alpha was awesome (I actually regret not buying Dredd and Alpha but that's a different issue).

(is this in the right forum, or should it be in general chat?)

Classifieds / PROG 1208 TO TRADE!!!
09 January, 2009, 01:01:53 PM
Hello you lucky punters!

I've got a spare copy of the tricky prog 1208 that I'd like to trade or sell. It's in pretty good condition apart from a small tear to the front cover near the barcode.

ebay has a BiN one for £30 but if someone out there can make me a tasty offer from my gaps list... I'm prepared to do a deal - otherwise feel free to make me a cash offer.

I can't be bothered to put it on ebay, but I do have a 100% feedback rating for buying/selling there. Check my ebay rating here.

My gaps are as follows:
Progs:
4, 5, 6, 7 & 8
9 (with back cover)
10 (with back cover)
11, 24 & 26
78 (mine is missing the back cover)
335 w/poster
426 (damaged due to over-reading as a child - it was my 2nd prog!)
1589 ASDA variant.
AND finally...
2000AD Sci-Fi Special 1980

Thanks!
