Prog / Prog 2174 - Blind Fury!
21 March, 2020, 01:40:25 PM
A cover that it took me a bit of time to recognise as A: Will Simpson and B: Aquila - nice enough, though!

Dredd is fun if a bit exposition heavy - great art and nice idea for a twist on "Dredd meets his cultural counterpart"

Saving the rest but just to say, wonderful Star Scan by Eoin Coveney - Thought it was Mike Collins for a second! Very classic, very dynamic!

Website and Forum / Using the 50% discounts
28 February, 2020, 10:18:09 PM
So I log into my account and I have two 50% discounts - one runs out in August, so better get that gone....

But how? It talks about a voucher code, but all I can see are two boxes that tell me what the discount is for and when it runs out - no code?

Not seen a thread for these guys? Entertaining jump around Dredd, with welcome excursions into the 2st C - even a discussion about last weeks Dredd and prog!

Possibly they are hiding from us pedants waiting to strike, but curiously, the odd gap here or there in knowledge or misremembering actually works, especially for filling us in on the experience of being an American Dredd fan trying to piece it all together!

Prog / Prog 2150 - You want Thrills, Earthlets?
23 September, 2019, 08:34:00 PM
Yes I do!

And Dredd delivers in spades - I am intrigued by what Hershey is up to
FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE!
.  Sad, funny and setting up so much anticipation for where this might go

Brink take us elsewhere, and very glad to have this back - beautiful comics

The Anderson story is a bit generic jump on prog - exactly what you'd expect from a Judge Anderson bingo tale - not badly told, Jake Lynch is always interesting on the eye, but no surprises

Leaving Deadworld and Defoe for later, but Defoe art from SK Moore looks like it could become something special, though hard to tell where it will go long term - I'll be interested in how his style develops but a strong enough start in terms of potential

Anybody here used Patreon as a Patron?

My most favourite of all artists has popped up on Patreon

I am faced with wanting to buy items at two tiers as one off purchases (magic mixtape!) as well as signing up to give $5 no questions asked every month

I have no clue how to achieve this - wiser minds, please aid me!

Books & Comics / Modern Spider-Man help!
13 July, 2019, 11:05:02 AM
My son, Joe is very much in the middle of a Spider-Man fan surge.  I fed him the 60s Essentials up to vol 5 as a young un (must get more!) and he is rereading them in the wake of the new film.

He is hankering for something a bit more modern though, and I can't blame him, essential (see what I did there?) as those 60s tales are.

But I have no clue about "good" Spder-Man arcs or collections that would appeal to an interested 14 year old?  any suggestions for appropriate reading?

Other Reviews / Strontium Dog: Among The Missing

I remember this coming out as an ebook, but had missed the fact it came out as a physical product - I know my mind was clearely elsewhere in October 2013, but for as big a Stront fan as myself to miss this, they must have urely sneaked this out!

no review yet, as only on Chapter 2, but looking forward to having something to say shortly!

HOW GOOD IS SPECTOR??

So glad to hear John wants to keep writing him, though this means I shouldn't read the included script if I dont want to be spoiled?

Prog / PROG 2111 - Welcome to the Thrill-Party!
08 December, 2018, 11:04:23 AM
Excellent stuff so far -

Dredd is a great Christmas tale from TC Eglington and Boo Cook, both of whom I find hit and miss, but definite double hit here.

Slaine by Weston is a a bit weird - at is wonderful and it is good to see PAt tell us a bit more about Ukko's origins (as already revealed in the "Kiss My Axe" preview?).  The story is set in "current" continuity, but feels like it could be from the first run (especially Slaine, who looks like he stepped out of the prog 300s!  Preview art for the next Slaine artist - it is indeed Leonardo Manco and it is Biz-tastic looking....

Some early Thargs interviewed between the stories too

No one else get their copy yet?

First up, the art on the back up strips deserves a shout out - some great work going on there, fitting in with Coleby's style whilst not copying it in any shape or form - well chosen synergy going on there!

As for the story, I'm variably familiar with the characters this riffs on - not sure this adds anything to any of those characters and doesnt feel like anything we havent seen before(the Death Wish one was fun though!).   I'm kind of with Alan Moore on the idea of comics designed to keep the 12 year olds of 50 years ago occupied perhaps not having the greatest weight for supporting an industry

Games / DUNGEON DEGENERATES
04 July, 2018, 07:39:36 PM
Board game time (this is the right place yeah?)!

It would be remiss not to point fellow squaxx in the direction of the Dungeon Degenerates Kickstarter (second printing)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/seanaaberg/dungeon-degenerates-hand-of-doom-second-printing

As someone who backed first time, I have been pleasantly surprised by just how this ticks all the right boxes for me - the designer has said that it is inspired by the same things as early GW, namely Punk and Metal, Monty Python and our very own 2000AD!

If you have a love of the above, then I'd urge you to jump on board!

Prog / Prog 2087 - Dogs of Gore
23 June, 2018, 12:14:50 PM
McCarthy cover is great, good to have him back here and the Meg

Dredd... wish Barney was still up to date, if only so I could work out if Rory McConville wrote all thsoe otehr Dredds with a great premise that the strip tells us about rather than shows us.  Loving Rory's Devlin in the Meg, so not sure why (if those other Dredds were his!) the Dredd fails - well I do know, I just said it - show don't tell.  Don't shortcut the plot with explanatory text to fit it into six pages, spread it out over two parts.  As I say, I have seen this before in Dredd, where an interesting idea was squashed into too small a space - not sure if they were all Rory's, but even so.

Skip Tracer - lost me now - it feels like someone read Junker and thought (not unreasonably) "I could do better than that!".  Well, it is better than Junker but that isnt much to recommend it - adding unexpected Psi-abilities is pretty much where I bail on any strip.

The Order is a story I never kept up with and reading the bit on teh Nerve centre didnt get me reading this or keen to read what I had previously skipped.

Dredd finally turns up in Deadworld?

Red is the highlight - it isnt spectacular, but is the best use of the character in a long time, and I'm including the original Stront run in that - lots of potential.
