General / Dan Dare
09 May, 2008, 02:29:33 PM
Anyone reading the new Dare comic? Enjoying it so far despite a couple of niggling problems, and liking the respect and understanding for the character, he was never a jingoistic figure as he's sometimes made out to be, and it almost makes up for my deep dislike for Morrisons Dare. Well almost...

Books & Comics / Action force! Deaths Head! Other stuff.
16 December, 2006, 08:07:50 PM
My web-fu sucks so I can't post a link however if you go to  www.bloodforthebaron.com you'll find a rather nice archive of all the 80's action force strips form Battle Action force (where else would you find the SAS fighting the red Shadows and Hitlers clone army?).
theres also a similar feature on the original Deaths Head from Marvel UK which I always rather liked.

Film & TV / Rome
07 September, 2006, 04:29:46 AM
got the Rome boxset recent3y and really enjoyed it. seems beter paced than when on tv, and I can't pretend that the awesome level of totty went unnoticed. Stupidly expensive at the moment but when it's half price in hmv I. highly reccomend it Between this and the Galactica box set i've had a tv tastic fortnight.
However I need some hive advice, a few chums want a beered up ultimate force marathon, can a normal man handle 6 hours of grant mitchell "acting" or should I feign testosterone poisoning?

with Dc/wildstorm releasing comics based on old fleetway properties whats the chances of seeing a Doomlord/Greenlantern face off? (Doomlord/batman wouldn't last too long "I'm Batman" "disintegrate")Do they have the Eagle rights? If so what would you like to see?

General / worst 2000ad era
05 August, 2006, 08:49:22 PM
As a follow on to another thread what do you think the worst era was? Personally the years that gave us Mother Earth, Kid Cyborg, Millar Dredd and the true horror of  Shakey Kane (although I liked believe it or not) almost finished me off.

General / bom bom bom bom bom FLASH!
09 October, 2003, 01:34:56 AM
Reasons why Flash Gordon is better than Star Wars (with apologise to Empire, who picked the right movie for the wrong reasons)

1. No one connected with Flash Gordon went on to make Willow.
2. In the battle of the bland blonde heroes at least Sam Jones has had the good grace to piss off and not make Slipstream.
3. Princess Leia - alright looking bird v Mings daughter - evilspacefox (TM). Hmm difficult one.
4. Brian Blessed! Peter Wyngarde! Peter Duncan! Timothy Dalton! The bird from Manimal! v The Green Cross Code Man and Mr Bronson.
5. Hawkmen v Ewoks.
6there was no Flash Gordon holiday special

Brothers and Sisters join me in accliaming the mighty Flash over the evil of Lucas.

General / Random Observations
15 September, 2003, 12:24:37 AM
Got back from part 1 of my holiday t' other day anbd read a big chunk of tooths. Observations from recent issues:
The art on the Dick Turpin Past Imperfect was really good, give that chap some horror stories to scribble.
Leviathon continues to be tops great story/art combo, and its interesting to note that Scarlett Traces amd LOEG 2 can happily fit together into one continuity, and the fact ST doesnt suffer in comparison shows how good a piece of work it was.
Bizzarely there are Spanish Language Dan Abnett books in existance,(this led me to wonder if in a translated Sin/Dex Dex would continuely shout "!Oh Crikey!" in English for no discernable reason)  hopefully I'll be able to see Magyar and Polish copies in phase 2 of my drunken tour of the continent
The  Extreme edition showed that Judge Death has been distinctley iffy between Necropolis and the recent versions, and while I didnt particularly enjoy the content I'm sort of glad i bought it in the hope furhter editions more in keeping with my personal likes will turn up.
The decison to have Wardog as the 2nd story in the Showcase project will probably kill it, it was an OK story but not something that 'll consolidate any audience 13 ropes in.
Anyway rambling over (I was going to slag off the Gaiman marvel thing but i cant be arsed, oh and I reccommend Gates of Fire -a novel about the 300 Spartans-  and the recent non-fiction Alamien -dont have authors name to hand-  as good holiday reading)

Well I've returned from a great weekend in London and despite usually hating the place I have to say when it's sunny it's lovely. I think I fell in love every 100 metres the amount of beautiful women in town (although bear in mind I'm from Pompey the South Coasts Moose capital). Saw Mama Mia in the end and thoroughtly enjoyed it.
More on topic I went to the flagship Forbidden Planet for the first time and was distressed to find it was as shite as their regional stores.

Its the nicest lump of shiny metal I've come accross in a long time (not in the style of Lobster Random) and i reccommend them if you have some friends who have compatible kit.

Help! / Weird War Stories
09 June, 2003, 06:58:22 PM
Anyone interested in collaborating on a possible fanzine? I've wanted to look at the weird war genre, Fiends of the Eastern Front, a more martial General Jumbo and Mach 4's counter-commie adventures. Theres a previous set of scripts for a Fiends and Mach 1 idea I had months ago floating round herew somewhere  but I was thinlking of smaller, self contained and hopefully better stories.
If anyone fancies getting involved (sadly I draw like a hatless monkey) in what I'll laughbly call the project let me know

General / Savage!
07 June, 2003, 08:27:30 PM
From comic book resources:
"Fans of Bill Savage? The star of "2000 AD's" Invasion series is to feature in a new "Savage" series by Pat Mills and Charlie Adlard starting next summer"
Aiiiiiii! looks like those dirty Volgs are in for a shoeing.

General / Pulp
06 June, 2003, 01:58:01 AM
One of the things I used to be into in the mid 80s hayday of my comic reading, when Battle Action Force and Eagle and all manner of other stuff took my pocket money were Sven Hassell books, the Borribles, cheap target Dr Who books and science ficton Teenage stuff, involving alien invasions, nuclear war and dinosaurs, lots of dinosaurs. Best of all these were frowned on by my parents, (thats about as rebellious as I ever got sadly).
I wonder if the death of the cheap and nasty paperback is one of the contributing factors to the decline in comics reading. I don';t think they were competition so much as companion pieces. I know a lot of us Sven Hassle fans read Battle for it's Death Squad rip off initially hanging around for Charleys War and Johnny Red.
Anyone agree with this? what bad influences did you chaps read? and is there a modern equivalent?

JimBob
Warped for ever by o.d.ing on James Ellroy in the early ninties, now theres a bads influence kids.

General / Meg Reprints
04 June, 2003, 05:34:22 PM
I've found reading the  reprints in the meg recently quite interesting as I first started reading Slaine during the horned god and the only reprints I've managed were the early stories up to Sky Chariots and Slaine the King.
Whats interesting about them is that they made perfect sense without this mad Celtic Starwars gubbins in between.
I've enjoyed Darkies Mob but I really wamt to see Charleys war again.
what are the thoughts on the current reprints and does anyone know whats next up?
