You know, Uncle Umpty, I shouldn't take the bait here, but...

Imagine Steve Sampson is browsing the Internet on a Sunday morning (or at any time) and he comes across your comment (which, I'm sure, got loads of laughs from your fellow boarders).

Pretty hurtful to the guy, who, no doubt, puts time and effort into his work. Not trying to have a go at you as I'm sure you're a nice guy, but, you know, there's just no need...

Hey, Uncle Umpty, thinking about it maybe I owe you a slight apology.

My point still stands, but it seems unfair to single you out when lots of people on the Board make cracks at the expense of artists and writers.

So, sorry.

I suppose that my post was actually aimed at the Board in general, in that I wish people would think before they typed (oh, if I could only take my own advice). You know, these art and script peeps are just that at the end of the day (people) and it seems unfair to take cheap potshots at them in a public forum.

So, with that caveat, apologies.

Matt

Just expressing an opinion....

I'm sure there are many people who love his 'paint over traced photographs' style, indeed the editors who commission artists must think so or he would never have appeared in the publication.

And I'm sure Mr Sampson is mature enough to understand that he's not going to appeal to everyone.

And at the end of the day it is he who is drawing comics while I just read them, so I think he has the upper hand here.

It's nothing personal against Mr Sampson, I wish him much success.

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to challenge that one.

You wrote:

The implication, intentional or otherwise, is that no one could possibly like Steve's artwork.

If you were just expressing your opinion, you would have written something like this:

'I don't like Steve Sampson's art.'

There is a difference.

But, as you said, he's the published artist and so there are, presumably, editors out there who believe that his work is quality work.

I quite like it myself. Reminds me a bit of Julian Opie.

Cheers
Matt

Guilty as charged.

I was just being flippant (or whatever the word is)

To be fair to Steve, though one might not like his style (I'm not just into Clint Langley's style myself) but I don't reckon there are any panels on that original page that were done with photo-ref, it's too 'actiony'.

Yeah Aid, you're probably right there... and looking at the artwork again it's actually not too bad.

I like Langly's painted stuff. Not keen on the computer stuff he does.

Mark Harrison's another one, painted artwork nice, computer artwork, something not right about it, too clinical or rigid or something, can't put my finger on it.

Hmmm. I also dislike Steve Sampson's art. I find it static and dull. That's just my opinion.

What did I do?!

You shouldn't generalise - that's what they do in Russia.

Well, some of artwork is generally pants, poster paint stuff that kids would do at school.

BUT, I also have some lovely pages that he has done and even a differnet Buffy one that came out nice.

So some good, some bad, a bit like all artists I guess.

For me, some of Sampson's stuff works very well, some doesn't - in the right place, with the right subject, it's great.  He certainly drew a very attractive Anderson, even if I didn't care for other elements of his strip work.  As others have said, it's static - and that's obviously an intentional aspect of his work.

And Matthew brings up the old chestnut - we obviously behave a bit like we're having a chat over a pint here, with flippant remarks, rants and flights of fancy.  It wouldn't be any fun if everything we said had to be as considered as an open letter or published editorial, but the reality is that that's exactly what it is.

It's very hard to know how to move beyond this point - I don't want to type each post as if I was making a press release, but I am increasingly conscious that this is far from a private snug.

Well I expect you'd find his Anderson attractive if you liked Liz Hurley, Kim Basinger, Madonna or whoever he was using photos of at the time - not that I object to using photo ref, but using well known posed images that just dont fit at all... that or obvious catalogue models just standing about - take your own photo refs dammit!

Personally, Sampsons got to be a bottom 5 artist for me, on those grouinds alone, let alone the actual quality of the painting on top.

Surely I'm the one everyone should blame, not Umpty?

Don't be a martyr, Simpleton. No, it's Umpty who's at fault. And I'm thinking "there but for the grace of God...", because, you know, right before Umpty got in there and made me chuckle at his audacity, I held back from making an unflattering onservation of my own, to the effect that I had followed the link and couldn't really tell what I was looking at.

As for photo reference, I thought perhaps a weeble with some scalpel blades sellotaped to it, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, thank God I said nothing, in light of the row that seems to have blown up since Uncle Umpty said his (ring) piece. And Matthew, I think you may only have made things worse by drawing attention to it.

I thought the point worth making and I thought the debate that followed informed and intelligent and worth having. I still stand by what I've written already. However, didn't mean to p*ss anyone off.

Cheers, everyone, for your considered input. Likewise, cheers, Umpty, for your responses.

My original post probably came off the back of reading a 2000 AD Review thread where they were discussing Dave Stone's Armitage and then who should pop up, but Dave Stone.

He's best know round these parts for writing Armitage (or Morse in the 22nd Century) and Dr Who spin-off novels:

Wasn't that Igor Goldthinggy, or maybe Garth has a history of writing things on foreheads.

Well, according to Charley Adlard:

"I remember at conventions he always used to get outrageously drunk, so he would just pass out somewhere in the hotel bar. And someone like Garth Ennis would write rude words on his forehead, backwards so heâ??d read them in the mirror, all this sort of stuff. He was always abused. And fair enough, because he was a really annoying man."

And I'm sure I've a quote from Garth somewhere saying the same thing, but that's for another (pay) day...

I like Steve's work.

I have a few pages from Brit City Babes and am looking for more.

There are people who like this sort of thing. If we were all the same in what we liked then life would be dull.

" If we were all the same in what we liked then life would be dull"

Not if we all liked really exciting stuff?

Is it just me or is there loads of Necroposting going on today?

When I saw the title of this thread, I immediately assumed someone was selling a load of photo prints from EMPIRE or something.  Not a big fan of Mister S's art - I think the major disappointment for me was seeing THAT Bolland BRIT-CIT BABES cover and then opening up the Meg to see the interior art.

Sheesh... a year goes buy and then... BLAMO!!! it's back with a bang.

Necrposting or not, he's still shit*. Gotta be in the top five worst artists to manage to get work printed in the comic. I can only guess it was in the 'well we've payed for this crap so we may as well print it' pile.

Has Mr Sampson appeared in the Megazine or 2000ad recently??

Just curious.

* just a personal opinion, I'm sure some people think he's great, just as some people don't like Mighty Mick McMahon.. each to their own.

Nope, it can't be that, because they went back to fill their bucket from the same well over and over again. Them as was paying for it clearly liked it.

Although I never liked his strip work, it seems that Steve is still out and about in the illustration field, to which he is much more suited. His strip pages, after all, were really just pasted together images - no story-telling whatsoever.

Quite like the stuff on the website though.
