Creative Common / Inktober
23 October, 2017, 09:53:43 PM
Since there's nothing quite so inky as a bog-paper prog I'm drawn to Inktober and am actually on track to complete the month  :) Bit of catch-up needed here and there of course.

Anyway, there's nothing big or clever about straight-up copying but that's what I've mostly done. Bits & pieces from a comic or two...

Events / Paisley Comic Con - 8 April 2017
21 February, 2017, 05:18:08 PM
I was surprised, too  :o
Don't be scared, the first Paisley Comic Con is almost upon us.

"Oh, when is it?!" you ask.
Sat 8th April. Possibly Sunday too, depending on your sources.

"Who's attending?!"
No-one knows! (expect I'll be there though).

"How much?!"
TBC.

Sounds great!

[Not to be confused with the frankly old-hat Beer Festival, same venue, couple of weeks later]

Off Topic / Disposable Heroes - Gone ?
13 January, 2016, 06:18:35 PM
Disposable Heroes seems to have gone AWOL :-(  A top store, I received a few comics from them about a week ago, but a couple more are still outstanding. Not a big deal for me then, but for people with big orders...

Bleeding Cool last week:

The website for popular Irish online comic store Disposable Heroes reads "WE ARE REFRESHING THE SITE. THE SITE WILL BE LIVE AGAIN SHORTLY".

The problem is that no one has heard from them in quite some time, and they haven't replied to Bleeding Cool's e-mails. Their Facebook page hasn't updated since 19th December, they haven't tweeted since and their eBay page has all but disappeared with plenty of negative eBay responses...

Hope it's a blip.

Books & Comics / Red Thorn

A new Vertigo title that looks fantastic and promises a lot, by that David Baillie. One especially for the Cal Hab contingent; set in Glasgow, it may do that Taggart thing of offering up landmarks to spot...?   :)

Anyway, Mr Baillie pops up on Radio Scotland shortly, and this will be available on iPlayer.

Film & TV / Homeland
15 December, 2014, 02:44:56 AM
Only a couple of episodes to go of season 4, but  Homeland is currently heart-stoppingly good.
Have really enjoyed it from the start but always had the feeling it had a short fuse. Not so, it turns out.
Season 4 began strongly then wobbled for perhaps a week, recently. At all other times it's been thumpingly
good...

The thing is, Sunday's episode was perhaps the single best episode of any US series I've ever watched.
I wouldn't spoil it by detailing why, I suppose I'm just asking any lapsed fans to give it a try...

As a grumpy (ie. discerning) old scrote I've dropped most shows as tosh (Gotham alone survives) so it's
nice to see Homeland confound expectations and make other shows just look silly.

Books & Comics / No more Comic Heroes
15 July, 2014, 10:24:43 AM
Sad to hear about the demise of Comic Heroes magazine... final issue is out this week.

It was a great chunky read, and got me appreciating swathes of the golden and silver age stuff (though it was prone to repeat itself), not to mention European comics and much else. Routinely found that the articles I felt weren't aimed at me in fact interested me the most. Read it cover to cover.

Welcome to the board / Wotcher
07 August, 2013, 01:17:38 AM
Well wotcher :-)

Finally got activated weeks into trying, so hey-ho.
Boring background: first prog = 181, read religiously till 800-ish(???) and still a run of unread progs in the loft.
Tried a couple of times over the years to pick up progs in the 90's, gave that up when flicking through the progs.
But.... picked up 1800, liked it, read ever since, Dredd film was great and the rest is biochemistry.
Lurker at ECBT 2000ad and hope to chip in there soon.
Podcasts are an absolute treat :-) Ron Smith & Henry Flint...

Anyway, got the comics habit back, Day of Chaos books and much else (Before Watchmen - don't
judge me - and Saga and American Vampire and Extraordinary Gents).... working my way through all that.
Funny how things work out.
