Title: Warlord Stront game!
Post by: TordelBack on 14 December, 2016, 03:50:45 PM
From the main site: https://www.2000adonline.com/post/1183. (https://www.2000adonline.com/post/1183.)

Warlord do some lovely professional minis stuff.  I've been playing with their Napoleonic Black Powder rules this year and they are user-friendly and very relaxed.  Excited to see how this turns out.

This is good news - maybe I can finally replace my converted-WH40K-model Max Bubba miniature (Milliput head, of course) with something more skilfully crafted.

Starlord Games?

This is both great and horrific news, as I managed to avoid completism draggin me into the Dredd stuff, but cannot resist Stront!

Having managed to avoid the last lot of Dredd miniatures hype I find myself strangely drawn towards this.

I guess the bounty hunting setup lends itself to small scale skirmish games.

No news of how far along this is developed that I can find, but here is one of the developers talking about a recent meeting in April 2017 so there may be some time to wait yet.

I didn't realise there was already a thread on this game - could you merge it with my more recent Strontium Dog miniatures game thread please?

Looks amazing - time to dust off the old paint brushes and get a little bit of practice in. Lets hope my eye sight can hold on for the fine detail :geek:

The lure of owning Impetigo Jones (and Brute Mosely) proved too much - pre-ordered it.

Pre Ordered  :) :) as well as adding to the Dogs I hope they do The Judges & Rogue sets in the Future as missed out on the originals and now a wee bit pricey to get them all.
I would also go for a wee set of ABC  :)

Beyond a summer in my teens collecting a handful of 2000AD mins and somehow getting Chainsaw Warrior solely for Brett Ewins cover I have not wanted or looked for anything along those lines, but these are great! Ill probably never play the game but those mins will be mine!

Alpha was the first miniature I ever painted, 30 years ago! Long since misplaced, unfortunately. Since I just started painting mini's again this year, the timing is very good.

I doubt I'll have the opportunity to fit a new skirmish game into my rotation, so the question is: am I going to drop 50 quid just for a bunch of Strontium Dog miniatures?

I mean, *I* know the answer, I'm just throwing it out there.

Something I don't understand - the big £140 bundle doesn't seem to contain more than you get if you buy the starter kit plus all the figures that are also in the bundle (in fact you're paying about £30 more, unless I'm missing something).
Title: Re: Warlord Stront game!
Post by: Trooper McFad on 30 June, 2018, 02:32:27 PM
The Big Bundle has been reduced to £120 as they had calculated the bundle wrong! (I got a refund of £20  :))- but overall its not a bargain buying all together. If I had waited they may have had a sale in 6/9 months time then I might have scored. But not getting previous versions from other sellers (War games Foundary had a great range which you can still see but now can't sell them) I wanted these so splashed the cash.

They really need to do a Hitler and Hitler with Sternhammer silencer, then bundle it up with some German troops, release Big Cynthia et al, and voila - best skirmish scenario ever!

Got it this morning - a great looking package and the books are really well put together - loads of beautiful Carlos art presented in a very dynamic way. May take some photos later if anyone wants to see

Also good to see what miniatures are likely to be due - Bubo and the bad boys, Fly's Eyes Wagner, Darkus and the Howlers, Kansyr, Steelkreig!

I now need to get my old wargmnes foundry minis down form the loft and have a mass painting

Spiro and Gyro!  Maeve the Many-Armed!  Kid-Knee!  This is fantastic stuff!

But yeah, where's Schicklgruber?  A few Kreelers would be nice too.

Leigh, if you had any of the Mongoose/Warlord Dredd figures handy, I'd love to see a comparison - could be a valuable source of alternate mooks, marks, droids and Little Friends of Dennis.

Got mine aswell this morning as had to go and pick it up at the post office. Overall very impressed with all the content. Will probably splash the cash on the future sets.
It would be good if they did a paint set as they have with their Zombies sets. This would be a big help for novices like myself who haven't painted figures for a good few years 😳

Lets see if this works....There are definite scale issues between those lovely old GW ones, the hulking WF ones and now Warlords, though as you (should be able to) see, mixing and matching isnt too mad

Added a Mongoose Dredd to the end to show that Mongoose/Warlord Dredd seem to be fine - weirdly, both the Torso and Evans the Fist from Wargames Foundry look a lot better match as well (though theya re in their boxes, so hard to compare - pic added though!).  Red is crouched down, but looks way too big

Preordered all the preordery stuff, then realised I should ahve got two sets of the Build Your Own given there are many extra bits.... next time, with (I hope) a Malak Brood and zombies set, or a Durdee Clones set, or a Thing, Thang and Vicious Malicious Set, or a Slavers of Drule set, or a Papa-POrka and pirates set, or a Willy Blanko and gang set, or a Xen the Brainwraith/Sadan the Demonmaker/Charn-El set, or an Incident on Mayger Minor Set, or a Dragonheads/Ikan/Trapper Hag set....!

Painting up an Impetigo Jones at present - I'm so used to the 27mm scale popularised by Games Workshop (and used by the Mongoose / Warlord Dredds) that these proper 25mm miniatures seem awful small. Good authentically-detailed minis though. Looking forward to tackling Brute Mosely once I can get his hands / gun attached.

Was it you that wrote the Impetigo Jones solo story for Dogbreath some years back, Greg?  The Bubba gang look like the pick of the crop so far, so pics please, whenever you're ready!

Anyone caught wind of the likelihood of Morks yet?

Along with references to pirates, slavers and kreelers, morks get more than one mention, so I expect (nay demand!) we will see them in due course - maybe with Bubo and the Bad Boys?

Slightly more done:

Slightly annoyingly, the scale of the goons and possibly the Weerds looks a bit larger than the rest fo the figures - not a problem when they are a bit apart I suppose, but odd none the less.

There is an Evans The Fist image doing the rounds labelled "Heroes of the Mutant War" or somesuch, so hopefully him, Torso, Clacton/Frinton Fuzz,... General Armz?

Corr, that's a bit nice Leigh!  Yeah, Mutant Army Generals pack would be essential. Spud Murphy and Vince Scampi needed to round out the Outlaw gang too, I think.

Reckon there's enough Fuzzes for their own pack: Clacton, Frinton, Walton and arguably the best of them all, Shaggy.  A Support pack would be good too: Teenage (General) Johnny, Billy Glum, Harvey and Precious Matson; maybe a Quarry pack would be more practical, King Clarkie, Vera Duckworth, Ronald Reagan and Adolphus Schicklgruber?

Goddamnit, I'm off to order the starter set now.

yeah, I thnk young Johnny is a given in a Heroes of the Mutant War set - Good call on the support pack - Moses Quest! Scroggy and Ma Froggett! Sorry Bobbs!

Call me biased as a Stront fanatic, but there seems to be a lot more "use" to any miniatures you can think of for practical gaming purposes than the Dredd range, fun as it is to have a Kenny Who mini....

Oooh yeah, gotta have the Froggetts!  Big Cynthia too, how could I forget her! Thinking about it, there's just such a fantastic range of stylistically consistent character designs to choose from - I'm amazed how seamlessly the post-Final Solution stuff fits in in my head, really opens things up I hope Warlord can see the value of minis that don't specifically serve a competitive game: objective pieces, like Reagan, NBK or Moses Quest, really add to something like this, otherwise I can see it being endless Stront-on-Stront fights.  And I do intend to play this.

I'd also like to see alternate sculpts for Wulf and Durham Red at some point.

But don't knock my Kenny Who? mini with, that's my pride and joy!

One word: Tanketto!

You're spot on about the style being so consistent and how that just adds to the desire to see as much as possible.

Wulf in gronk jerkin and Alpha in Mayger Minor Incident and Journey Into Hell outfits are musts!

Yeah, can't quite believe Wulf's not already in his jerkin!

I have to say, I think Alpha himself's one of the weakest of the sculpts so far...
Title: Re: Warlord Stront game!
Post by: Leigh S on 29 July, 2018, 10:43:03 PM

yeah, DJ - the Alpha seemed odd - looks like they went with the Cliff Robinson stylings which are fine, but why not Carlos?

Had to Carlos him up a bit - again not quite finished and a bit of a struggle this one! I think he looks better with a bit of Carlos brown rather than the green and yellow, but that may be my taste!

Wow Leigh, those look sharp! Agree about Alpha, my guess is it's an early proof-of-concept model, possibly even a different sculptor, before they went full steam with the line an it settled down into solid Ezquerra loveliness.  But he still isn't half bad, and I've always liked a smaller leaner Johnny.  So to speak.  Still a damned sight better than many of the Dredd minis there have been, especially in terms of accurate gear and costume.

Oh, yes indeed - it kills me that these come at a time when I just can't justify the expense, so I'll be sitting these out for the forseeable - but I just love that they exist. A Maeve the Many-Armed mini?! Weerd brothers? Blubberlips? Slabhead and his 'dogs'? Amazing.

Wait, are you telling me there's no Shaggy in Tendring?  Outside of TOWIE, I mean.

As to Reagan, I wonder if we could one day stretch to a whole line of 2000AD-world US Presidents.  We've just had Washington in The Order, then there's the Mt Rushmore "Not the teeth!" version of  Jimmy Carter, SD's Reagan, Dredd's Clinton Box and Bill Clinton, Dan Franciscobama, Zombo's Mr. President/Dredd's President Booth, JFK must have been in half a dozen Time Twisters/Future Shocks... and surely we've had the Bushes in some form too?  Maniac 5, maybe?

These figures look awesome - great work Leigh!

I've never painted or played with mini-figures before but will be picking up the starter set and the Stix Brothers sets on Monday. (I dont think I'll play the game - I just want to paint and display those figures!)

Leigh, could you provide some insights as to how you paint the finished figures? They are perfect and I'd appreciate any tips as to how you achieve the final look. I'll browse youtube as well, I'm sure there are some instructional video slugs out there.

Keep posting, I'll be using them as reference! (Especially that Carlos brown - great choice)

Thanks - RJ

Maybe.

Warlord contacted us about using clips from the film to promo the game, we said from our POV it wouldn't be a problem, as long as the actors were cool with it.

We pointed out the main sticking point would likely be Rebellion, as they tend to keep a 10-foot barge pole between fan stuff and anything official and to ask them first.

We didn't hear anything back after that.

As a bit of an elaboration - if one certain company is used then it would more than likely take a month or two after sending for me to actually get my hands on whatever gets sent, if I receive it at all.  They're worse than useless and at their own admittance have no process for picking up parcels from their distribution centre (i.e. anything that gets returned goes into a massive warehouse where there are tens of thousands of packages, in no particular order).  As their delivery slots are all during the normal office working day then there delivery consists of wasting fuel carrying loads of about 100 parcels around, polluting the area before taking it back to the depot, where it'll get put in a pile and carried around a few more times before being returned to the sender (once they've worked out which things in the pile have been out for a few spins).

I'm a little wary of ordering anything online for fear the sender uses this Delivery comPany, Dontcha know?

DPD - completely unrelated to the order I've recently experienced, they collected an item to be returned, there first action being to take off the return label and replace it with their own, so it got taken to a third party warehouse completely unrelated to the delivery company and the company the item was supposed to be returned to, where it languished for a few days until someone could figure out what the item was and what it was doing there.

I finally bought the starter kit at a local game shop (which came with a free bonus Johnny Electro-nux!) - I didn't realize the figures were so sneckn' small!

I have never painted minis before - can anyone point me to a good source of info? I need to find out what kind of paint/brushes/techniques etc to use. Also, what kind of glue is required to connect their guns/hands and glue the figures to the plastic bases? Sorry for all the questions, I'm really looking forward to this!

Cheers

YouTube is the place to go.  There are billions of mini painting channels, the real trick is to find a spode whose voice doesn't provoke homicidal thoughts.

I've found this guy (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=e9qz3NItBPw&t=25s) to be extremely clear on the absolute basics, as he comes more from a craft background. Captain Atom on the Tabletop Minions channel is good too,  although he doesn't half drone on.

Tordels - the orange is a very old pot of Citadel Blazing Orange washed with newer GW wash Fuegan Orange - took a few coats of the Blazing Orange to get it that orangey!

Trooper - I can't wait to get to the Morks either, but there's a line of primed SD Agents/Dervish Dogs/Goons/Howlers blocking my path! :)  And the Kansyr mini looks so much more impressive in the flesh ("Blaster to Flesh!") that he has jumped the queue too!

After being sidetracked with painting the planet replicas McMahon Dredd, I finally started the Strontium Dog figures and when the are all in front of you it's quite a daunting prospect and I thought I hope they don't release any more soon! Then they tease this week that coming soon are the "Kreelers" set 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I don't know how many more they will produce for this set but I'm hoping they will expand into a Rogue skirmish game in the future 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Studs Boyce, General Armz, Evans the Fist, the Torso from Newcastle and not forgetting Clacton Fuzz!

Speaking of Clacton, I know his son's name is Frinton (the next town up the coast on the Tendring Peninsula from Clacton on Sea) but do I vaguely remember another Fuzz?  What was his name?  The obvious one would be Walton (after Walton-on-the-Naze).

Thanks DJ - I did have a feeling that most but not all of them followed the same naming scheme (it's been a very long time since I lived in the region, but I don't recall there being a town or village called Shaggy in the environs of Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze).

Cheers McFad!  Mailed off a query and never heard back, and my order arrived anyway today..

Generals and Dervish Dogs are lovely stuff, although I am a bit perturbed about scale creep/variation.  I know his mini is on the small size, and I've no real problem with Johnny being a shortarse, but shorter than the Torso...?  That seems a bit extreme.

Anyhow, this latest purchase has inspired me to take a short break from painting Nurgley boils and tentacles and try out other forms of mutation.

Before I start, a quick question for Leigh, and anyone else who's been plugging away with the bristles: am I right in thinking you're snipping off the integral bases and gluing/pinning before basing? Any tips on how best to do that without cocking up the feet??

And as a follow-on, is there any point using the crappy Warlord bases, which annoyingly come in two varieties? I was tempted to go the washer route, but not if I'm going to be pinning...

Title: Re: Warlord Stront game!
Post by: Leigh S on 23 September, 2019, 08:22:57 PM
I'm keeping the base, as I am not good with pinning! I gorilla glue the mini to the plasctic base (should be lipped?) and then use some polyfilla from poundland to fill in the gap and mask the minis metal base - then paint and GW texture paint (Agrellon Earth I think) to cover it all up!
Title: Re: Warlord Stront game!
Post by: TordelBack on 23 September, 2019, 08:32:50 PM
Well yours look so damned good I assumed the integral bases were gone, so I think I'll follow your lead (both pronunciations)! I usually do a glue-and-sand base for my minis, but that's not incompatible. My starter came with lipped bases, but the Generals and I think the S/D Agents came with flat discs.

I'm generally not inspired by the quality of the Warlord bases, I may sub in something from the bit box.

The details on these are superb so can only expect the Dredd ones to be the same. I'll be asking Santa for the Dredd kit 😃😃😃.
Hopefully they might dip into another Character from the 2000AD catalogue in the future but don't know which would suit the Skirmish game best?
(Rogue or ABC please)

As the Stront game feels quite asymmetric (read the rules but haven't played it yet, but soon!), and I imagine the Dredd game has to be the same (they always are), Rogue would seem to be the obvious next step for the system.  But obviously it should actually be Dante].  I would splurge so much money that I don't have on a Dante range that it would be genuinely absurd.

Dante would also be good just reading for first time as the complete story (ultimate collection) and asked myself why have I taken so long to get round to this. It's just getting better with each volume I read. Just hope it can keep me hooked til the end.

Same here!

By the way - if people are interested in those Warlord deals, I wouldn't waste time - some are already out of stock (I say this in the full confidence of somebody who has already made their order).

There's the conceivable chance you bought up all the stock just to use that one-liner.

Sadly not. Middenface was gone as well by the time I'd finished faffing around and clicked the button.

Just having dug out the (unpainted) miniatures, I'm not a fan of the bases (either the oval metal or the round plastic) but then I grew up with hexagonal, square or round slotta-bases...

Yeah, still really dislike the Warlord bases.  Seems weird to have something so cheap and flimsy chucked in with such quality minis.  That said, talented folk as you can find on this thread still make the finished product look good with the judicious application of polyfilla.
