And another decent tribute/obit over on the Bear Alley blog. It seems Jan was responsible for the brilliant Strontium Dog logo, too...

Cheers

Cheers Jim.

A tribute in the Prog would be suitable, her logo and a note, or a piece in the Meg.

Cheers, Jim. According to David MacDonald's authoritative One Eyed Jack and the Death of Valiant, Jan Shepheard says she thought she may have designed the fantastic Strontium Dog logo then handed it over to Central Art to work up into its finished version. That very nice obit also credits Jan with the Robusters logo, but Kev O'Neill claims that one for himself in the same Hibernia Press publication linked to above, although both his and Jan's memories seem a little hazy.

Jan seems to have created the logos and fixed the artwork for pretty much every other earlier 2000ad strip, though, and she was responsible for most of the logos for strips in Starlord and Tornado, including many which transferred to 2000ad, like Blackhawk and The Mind of Wolfie Smith.

Her memory was a bit hazy about Starlord,  I suppose when you consider that these comics were on sale for only 22 issues, she probably only spent a little over 6 months working on Starlord.
She recalled Tornado much better, the late title change and all the extra work that that brought, and  the fact that she though it was not as good as 2000AD may have helped it stick in her mind.

The original title to Tornado was 'Heroes' below is the what the logo would have looked like, designed by Jan and restored by Mike Carroll from a blurry old photo!

I started writing an article about Jan the other night then realised most of what I know is through Death of Valiant so that made it seem a little redundant and I started to think it would seem a little crass, I dunno.

One of the fun things about the first Titan books is they personalised the Jan Shepard logo for character specific "Judge" stories:

Caligula gets a cheeky glance, big hair and a fish emblem badge:

Owen Krysler is full of purpose and intent on the titular J:

I'm really pleased this was posted, I've never understood why the original was abandoned. Go back to the original, I don't mean a re-draw, the original.

And bottom-left of the page: "In memory of Jan Shepherd." A lovely touch from the in-house team. (And, I admit, that logo does still do the business for me, now I see it on the page.)

Nice touch that its in Black and White too.

It's the relationship between the readers and producers of the galaxies greatest comic that put it head and shoulders above any other comic, IMO.
Well done Rebellion and all who sail in her.
