"S'a blo'art!

S'a blo'art!"

Well, I'll have a piece of that, very tasty: Legacy of Heorot meets the Connecticut Yankee.

QuoteIs that not part of the point, it's a movie adaptation not the comic, his character should contrast with how he looks.

Don't really see it, Dan being an overweight speccy git was hardly echoing a comic trope in the mid-80s in the same way that rubberised-armour-clad martial-artist dudes are all over current superhero cinema.  Surely Watchmen was (partly) about undermining and reworking (see how I manfully try to avoid using the word 'deconstructing') ideas about superheroes, not just reproducing them?

But don't get me wrong, I thought that was an awesome piece of work.  I've watched it a dozen times now, an it keeps getting better.

Bit that hooked me deep:  Veidt taking out the "assassin" with the ashtray-thing, the "who sent you, don't bite down" bit in the book.  Just perfectly capturing a pivotal moment.

Bit that let me down:  Dan's flying jump-kick in the prison riot scene.

Amazing things:  Jon in 'Nam, Rorshach's mask patterns shifting, Laurie's costume, the owlship, Mars...

Worrying things:  Hints of use of 'bullet time' technique to simulate the way the book plays with time.

Damnit, must not give in, must resist pointless corporate hack-job of sacred text....

Even in the face of awesome trailer, never compromise.

Plenty of versions still appearing on U-Tube if you search recent uploads.  Sigh.  I want to hate this, I really really do, but it just looks so earnest and eager to please that I can't manage it.  I still don't believe there's any point (other than money) in a movie adaptation, but... Jon's Martian city is just so bloody cool to see in action, and as for the Owlship...

So I'll content myself with noting that Dan looks far too much the traditional movie superhero, and less the middle-aged geek gussied along by his psychotic ex-partner.  Off for another look now...

QuoteNext thing you know these kill joys will be saying Gremlins or Ghost Busters weren't that good.

Gremlins wasn't that good (the sequel was a bit better).

Ghostbusters, on the other hand, was and is absolutely magnificent (the sequel was appalling).

Suggestions / Re: My suggestion - Halo Jones

QuoteSo why not let someone else have a go at writing Halo Jones now?

Because it wouldn't be the same Halo Jones, the one Alan envisaged, and thus would be entirely uninteresting (to me, at least), and would probably put me off me Prog for the duration - which should be 7 more books, no?  It would, in short, be Skizz II and III all over again (cue a chorus of "but I liked Skizz II!" - maybe, but was it really worth the effort?).   Also, find me a loose end to follow at the end of Book 3, other than Halo herself and her Free Lunch Drive - it's very neatly wrapped up, despite what the Magus and Ian might say about plans for the future.

I thought that second episode worked a lot better, now that we've established that the whole thing is firmly rooted in fantasy and broad stereotype - coming on like it was CSI:Bath last week just made my teeth grind.  I still heartily wish that someone would briefly coach the cast in how to use the tools the sets have been elegantly dressed with.  Failing that, please stop yanking things out of the ground like that - it makes me wince.

The spurious "remove your bra" line is far from apocryphal - Dr. Horton earning his fee there, methinks.

That be very funny, and hopefully the start of something great - I always enjoy Whedon's musical endeavours, they're a good vehicle for his overly-mannered dialogue.  It's also nice that Dougie Howser's labcoat gets another outing, and  Cap'n Mal has certainly bulked up for his role.

The Hitman's Daughter.  She can take my marker any time.
Medb, the Bellardinelli Years.
DeMarco.  But lose the monkey butler, love.

Aargh, more double posting - that Edit time limit takes some getting used to.

One thing about the excellent Edgar Case that niggled just a bit was the
Ramos/Masterson cover-up
.  Now while I can see why Hershey  might have faked Volt's "heroic last stand" after the Justice Dept SNAFU that was the Narcos affair, and even hushed up the suicide attempt/return/death of Fargo,  I think this latest bit of spin crosses a line.

Surely it's Dept policy that the populace see that the Judges aren't above the Law?  Wouldn't it be a good thing that the citizens know that even a Council of Five member can't get away with crimes that are 30 years old?  I can see how it's a balancing act, but this seemed like a perfect opportunity for justice to be seen to be done.

I sometimes feel I'm the only human alive that can't stand the bloody Goonies.  I think I was just a few years too old for it when it came out (a surly teen who had just realised he'd learnt all he'd ever need to know, obsessed with opposing American fundamentalism and the military ambitions of the EEC...), and the appeal forever passed me by.  Like Ecstasy in that respect.

QuoteNo they are paranormal humans .

Yes, yes, but how many of them can dance on the head of that pin?  Anyway, surely the real question is: Who would win in a fight between Professor X and Cass Anderson?  The answer is obvious:
Hi-Ex!
Srry, double-post time, but the Edit time limit expired while I was copying this fom Dizzy's blog: one of the funniest Tooth anecdotes I've read in a while.

QuoteAnd most recently, of course, we've had Simon B Davis's "big purple willy" episode of Stone Island. Got to admit, that was a line I didn't expect to see crossed. Mind you, neither did Ian Edginton, who hadn't put it in the script (when he saw it, he rang me in a state of shock, wailing "there's a big purple willy right in the middle of my strip!" in a quavering voice. And him a married man, too.)

Hah, didn't know that!  Ah well, a man can dream.  Other than the logo, what's the difference between the first 3 Slaine collections and The Horned God?  Please sweet baby Jeebus don't let it be a dissonant spine!
