[...don't you know Sheffield early 2000's local band scene? They are a band of my friends Jeff, Marti, Mark, Laureta and Jon and they played at our wedding. They really were very good.

I lived in Sheffield for about five years from 1998 as a student but unfortunately don't remember them, maybe it was too early. But all this talk reminds me of an indie band called Velodrome 2000 whose members ran a record shop on Ecclesall Road back then. Remember them?

Is that rock club Corporation still open? It was a filthy place but some decent bands played there.

Back on thread, right now I am listening to El-P's Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3. Here's a snippet:

I do indeed remember Velodrome 2000. There were a lot of great bands around Sheffield at that time. Personal favourites include Seafruit - the lead singer (I think he was) went in to manage The Attic Monkeys - he owned the upstairs bit of The Forum to as I recall, Pig 64, Chick Legs Weaver and a band whose band began with M but I can't quite remember. Bit like Mogawi but not Mogawi.

That was before Screaming Mini's time, they played their first gig in June 2004 at my mate Dave's 30th birthday. Though in those days Jeff and Marti and a few other friends were in a band called Action Speculator nee Love Walrus Attack (terrible name).

As for Corporation, while I'm the last person to ask about the Sheffield club scene these days I can confirm that its still there... or at least still puts flyers out and about. Many of the best venues alas are no more. The Earl has gone as has The Broadwalk and most sadly The Grapes.

That's a shame. I played a gig upstairs once in The Grapes (we had to pay to play), it was weird because downstairs was like a 1950s living room with elderly men mixing incongruously with young indie fans. I guess you'll always have the Leadmill and with two universities there's always bound to be lots of live music.

At work and the Digi-music box is doing Its thing. One good tune in every thirty played, and all the more annoying as I'm unable to track down the 'good tunes' anywhere physically or on the Net.

... Bastille, apparently. I'm not sure why - Pompeii's a pleasant enough tune, but nothing special. Most of the acts featured on that list are very middle class and middle of the road, so maybe that tells you more about who has the bandwidth necessary to stream their music than it does about who deserves to be number one.

This popped into my inbox today. I thought that I would share it...

I backed the Kickstarter campaign for the new album(s) by DJ QBert; Extraterrestria and GalaXXXian, and got the downloads last week. I've been listening to both albums loads over the weekend and they are fantastic.

Hip Hop heads may remember lightning-fast, award-winning Filipino turntablist QBert from his DJ band, Invisibl Skratch Piklz who were active during the 90's. He's back with a follow up to his 1998 album Wave Twisters and is still on top form.

There's a wacky, concept album style story behind the new music involving an intergalactic DJing tournament. The first album, Extraterrestria, is a collection of instrumental entries from around the Universe filled with weird samples, odd time signatures and plenty of skratching.

The second record, GalaXXXian, is Earth's entry into the tournament and features loads of guest MCs such as Kool Keith, Mr. Lif, Del tha Funky Homosapien and Madchild. This collection is more straight up Hip Hop but is no less exciting than the first record.

Anyone who likes Hip Hop will love this new stuff.

Previously known as L*e B*tes. Sshhh, going undercover...

Finding myself listening to Everything Everything non-stop the last few days. Had heard the odd thing from them a while back but only just took a punt on the albums and love them.

Just endlessly inventive, probably the most interesting and progressive pop band I've heard in years (reminds me of when Mansun brought out 'Six', that album was a real prog-pop fest).

The second album feels a lot less manic but still fantastic, but it was these two tracks from the first album that really got my interest -

Just listening to Anathema today - a lot.

Really wish I could go back to the 25-year old version of myself and give him a slap for deserting them for (as I said at the time) 'disappearing up Pink Floyd's arse'
Peas sell. But who's Brian?

Like the Michael Jordan movie Space Jam, but with turntables.

It's all gone a bit Southern and sludgy for me recently, as Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and EyeHateGod have all conspired to release their new albums at roughly the same time. It's the EyeHateGod that's the current standout after preliminary listens – worth the 14 year (!) wait. It all takes me back to '95, when Down's 'NOLA' became a pivotal record in my musical history and threw open a whole new world of New Orleans-related goodness for me.

I'm back in a summery mood again, so I have been mostly listening to Julieta Venegas -

About 13:40 today, I was listening to Radio Four playing The Dead Kennedys. The World At One broadcast a piece about the return of Jerry Brown, governor of California in the seventies, to try and sort out the mess Arnie left behind, and played California Über Alles (which immortalises Brown in song) to underscore the report. Hearing Jello Biafra's voice on the most middle class medium on Earth made me wish they'd invite him onto Start The Week to shake things up, or maybe Just A Minute. Only kidding; Jello Biafra has never spoken for just a minute in his life.

Been listening to a lot of Queen lately, having only recently decided I needed to own some of their stuff.

I literally had no proper idea what this band was all about.

I dunno how seriously I can take some of their '70s output - there's lots of great rock tunes there. I love stuff like White Queen and Brighton Rock... but then they go and follow that stuff up with ukeleles and kazoos?

But, you know what? I like it. There's never a dull moment. And I'd never appreciated how great these guys were as a band. Freddie Mercury's vocals, which always made me wince as a kid, are actually really nuanced and pitch perfect, which I'd never have appreciated 20 years ago. And BLOODY HELL does Brian May bust out some chops all over those records!

It's fun to hear the other guys in the band singing on the odd track here and there. I actually wonder what their fate smight have been if Roger Taylor had been their lead vocalist.

'Tis a revelation in my ears, alright.
