Cheers, will investigate!

It's a funny one - I think Milligan has developed a bit of a cloth ear when it comes to dialogue, and the caricatured Nero is a bit ho-hum-seen-it-all-before, but I do like porno-Roman projects in general, and the stories in this one always keep me buying the next issue.

I think it might do itself few favours by putting Antonius (our hero) forward as some kind of Marcus Didius Falco detective character, when he's really more of a Lucius Vorenus with mystical connections. But it always looks great, if a wee bit steroidal (less so now with the switch in artists), and the historical articles in the back were great, hope they're included in the collection.

You know I'm always really surprised that I've not jumped on board the Britannica chariot, it should be right up my street.

Pete Milligan = check
Romans = check
Mystical demonic stuff = ... oh that's why...

I've expressed my love for all comics Roman on this site before, but I've got so tired with all comics based in ancient Rome and its Empire having to drag in magical and demonic stuff. Can we not just get a good comic about this fascinating period of history without Nero (or whomever) having demonic tentrills crawling out his butt or some such?

In honour of some chit chat over on another thread

Darling you should go and read some comics
Do you think it's gonna leave you change?
I'm just a boy with a new comic haul
And that's a pretty nice comic haul

Charges these days like a puzzle, prices hit you in the wallet
So be careful what, you buy
Look around, around, or just read what I've found
It'll save you a few pound

Comic scene's crazy
Titles start up each and every day
I saw another one just the other day
A special new title

I review what I'm buying, though I don't remember every line
I don't remember every word but I don't care
I care, I really don't care
You should buy these comics there

It a small haul, its the right all, there all brilliant.

Seriously they all have something to offer that might make them comic of the haul. Okay maybe not Cinema Purgatorio 15, which is not a bad comic by any stretch, in fact its a damned fine comic but at 4 out of 5 in this anthology its not quite at the standard of the rest! Which is saying something, also the fact that Mage:Hero Denied 11 isn't getting the title. Cos its just a typically good issue of a Matt Wagner comic, so like that means its better than 99.43% of comic, but ain't winning this haul.

Weather Man 3 makes its case by being just so relentlessly fast paced, this series gets through some stuff. It really could be a 2000ad story its that good and I loved this issue as it both cranked in the action but raised some interesting questions about whether it fair to blame our hero for the crimes of the man whose body and mind he has been created in!

Shanghai Red 3 makes a very strong case by being such a wonderful fresh western non-western. Its grim, its gripping and when the action explodes its just so exciting. Mind its the glorious quiter moments, with the sublime turn of colouring as our revenge filled heroine reunits with her sister that win the day here. Moon Girl and Devin Dinosair 34 makes an equally strong case for very different reasons. Its just immense fun. I mean seriously good fun as Devil Dinosaur is transformed into a young boy, drawn to perfection. Its hilarious and charming.

No book of the haul is none of these beauties it just has to go to Black Hammer: Age of Doom 4 which plays the wonderfully mundane moments so perfectly with the super exciting revalations in this issue. Its just brilliant, simply brilliant. The scene when Abe goes full disclosure with Tammy is truly great. His porch conversation with Barbie afterwards almost as good and then we get that ending. Just genius!

Last years Black Road - a five star in its own right - sorta hits that tho its POV is a Norwegian barbarian (the awesome very 2000ad-ish Magnus The Black) concerned with the Romans spread of Christianity into his land. That comic absolutely rocked.
If I'd known it was harmless I would have killed it myself.

Yep loved Black Road and most of Brian Wood's viking stuff I've read come to that.

Both Black Road and Northlanders are great. You can also try Rebels from him - "The story of America's first militia and the push for independence"
When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car.

The latest Runaways series has been really, really good so far. This is the first follow up to the original run by Vaughan and Alphona that feels like a true spiritual successor.

A trip to FP yesterday was well worth it...
Warren Ellis' Cemetery Beach won't have been out of place in a top end Prog or Megazine...

Great set up and plays with all the tropes while not insulting the reader...everything recent new stories have been lacking IMHO.

I've really enjoyed PJ and Garth's Citadel World of Tanks about the Eastern Front/Kursk, this along with A walk through Hell are two of the comics I'm currently well happy to pick up and to recommend to awbody here.

Dead Hand's finale  was very disappointing and looks like a set up for book two  sigh

Dredd under siege while an improvement of the Grassland stories didn't set the heather on fire for me.

TWD has piqué my interest again, just when I was going to stop buying...everytime
